2013-2014 TV Season Cancellations
This is for all the TV show cancellations for broadcast networks during the 2013-2014 TV Season. However, TV shows that are announced to be ending while that season is already airing will be added here. It would be placed here even if the show is given an official ending because in my book, that's a courtesy cancellation, but still a cancellation. Shows like How I Met Your Mother wouldn't be added since it was announced well before they started airing. This list will be updated as often as new information becomes available so make sure to check back. Cancellations will go on here in chronological order. If I miss any, please let me know.

- CreatorDavid ZabelJason RichmanKay MellorStarsSummer BishilLorraine BruceChristine EvangelistaFollow a group of seven gas station employees in Queens, New York, who have been chipping into a lottery pool for years, never thinking they'd actually win.On 10/4/13, ABC struck first blood by cancelling the freshman drama after only 2 episodes. The series was met with fairly weak ratings, lower than the final episodes of the two shows (Private Practice & Body of Proof) to previously inhabit the time slot. After its second episode aired, the ratings took a big nosedive by dropping 50%. Many predicted this would be the first cancellation (including myself), and it was. Production is apparently getting ready to shut down and there is no word on what will happen with the unaired episodes. Encores of ABC’s prodigy series, Scandal, will begin airing in the Tuesday at 10pm slot starting Oct. 8th.
- CreatorRob GreenbergStarsKal PennJerry O'ConnellTony ShalhoubA young guy finds camaraderie living among the more experienced guys he meets in a short-term rental complex. On 10/9/13, CBS made the first comedy cancellation of the TV season. The freshman comedy was pulled from the schedule after only two episodes. The guy comedy debuted to ratings lower than the premiere of the ill-fated “Partners” and the numbers took a big dive with week two. “2 Broke Girls” will be moved to their 8:30pm slot and encores of “The Big Bang Theory” will fill the 9pm slot until “Mike & Molly” take over on Nov. 4th. Maybe the networks will finally give up on the all-male buddy-comedy format work, but they always end up cancelled (Man Up, Guys with Kids). There is no word on what will happen to the unaired episodes.
- CreatorMichael CaleoCollier YoungStarsBlair UnderwoodPablo SchreiberSpencer GrammerCenters on Robert T. Ironside, a tough, sexy and acerbic police detective relegated to a wheelchair after a shooting who is hardly limited by his disability as he pushes and prods his hand-picked team to solve the most difficult cases. On 10/18/13, NBC officially cancelled the crime drama after 3 episodes. The remake of the 1960’s series opened to very poor numbers, making it NBC’s lowest-rated fall debut ever. The ratings then dropped even more in next two weeks. The final episode will air on Oct. 23rd, and until “Chicago P.D.” debuts (Jan. 8th), Holiday specials will fill the timeslot.
- CreatorMike SikowitzStarsMike O'MalleyMary McCormackJustina MachadoChronicles how cultures collide when a white family and a Latino family are bonded together by their children who fall in love followed quickly by an unplanned pregnancy. On 10/18/13, NBC cancelled the family comedy after only 3 episodes. It debuted to decent numbers, improving on what “Up All Night” achieved a year ago in the slot. However, demo ratings took a bit hit in the second week and we all know how those unfortunately count more than overall ratings. The third and final episode only slightly improved. The timeslot will be taken over by encores of “Parks and Recreation” along with various specials until a schedule shift in January.
- CreatorMark CullenRobb CullenStarsJames CaanMaggie LawsonBenjamin KoldykeCenters on Terry Gannon, a recently divorced single mother who temporarily moves in with her estranged father, a beer-swilling former baseball player. On 11/1/13, the James Caan sitcom was revealed to have been cancelled. The series debuted to decent ratings, but they began to drop over time. It was the only new sitcom from ABC that was not given a full season order, which is what declared an obvious cancellation. ABC plans to continue airing the remaining episodes through early 2014.
UPDATE: On 12/6/13, ABC announced they would not be airing the previously scheduled episodes in January. The last episode that will air is on December 11th, but that leaves 3 episodes unaired. There is no word on when ABC will show the remaining episodes, but it seems likely that they will just be uploaded online like they’ve done in the past (Man Up, Don’t Trust the B---). - StarsJodie WhittakerPaul RhysHarriet WalterCIA counter-intelligence officer Sandy Grimes works to save Soviet intelligence officers from being exposed by a mole inside her organization. On 1/11/14, ABC pulled the miniseries from their schedule after 2 episodes. The series broke records by debuting as the lowest-rated in-season network drama ever. Week two saw even lower ratings, so it being pulled is not much of a surprise. Or at least to the people who actually knew it existed. While it is only an 8-episode series and likely has a conclusion, ABC cancelled the airings of those episodes. There is no word on when or if the remaining six episodes will ever see the light of day, but repeats of Shark Tank will air in its spot until Scandal returns.

It ran for two seasons on The CW, with the finale airing fall 2013.
- CreatorVictor FrescoStarsSean HayesMegan HiltyEcho KellumCenters on Sean, who must figure out how to parent his 14-year-old daughter, who just moved in, while navigating a temperamental new boss at work.On 1/28/14, the Sean Hayes sitcom was given the axe. It debuted to less than decent ratings and then they fell even further very recently. It ranks as one of NBC’s lowest-rated scripted shows. Production has been officially halted after only completing 14 of the 18-episode order. The 2 remaining unaired episodes will be burned off sometime after the Winter Olympics are over.
- StarsSimon CowellDemi LovatoL.A. ReidIn this American version of the hit UK show, Simon Cowell and his fellow judges search for a singer who has the "X factor".On 2/7/14, FOX cancelled the Simon Cowell-headed competition series after three seasons. It never really took off the way Cowell and FOX had hoped for, and it actually saw less than half the ratings American Idol receives. Though Cowell's involvement was uncertain, FOX initially did seem to be entertaining the possibility of bringing it back for a fourth season. However, Simon is now officially returning to the UK version of The X Factor, so that may have influenced FOX's decision to axe the show all together.
- CreatorGregory Thomas GarciaStarsLucas NeffMartha PlimptonGarret DillahuntJimmy becomes a single parent to an infant after her mother, with whom he had a one-night stand, ends up on Death Row.On 3/10/14, FOX announced the series will end with its current fourth season. Executive producer Mike Mariano stated “We planned our Season 4 finale with this possibility in mind, and hope our loyal fans enjoy the way we’ve chosen to say goodbye to the Chances and to Natesville. Thanks again, and we’ll see you in syndication.” The series remarkably survived over the years despite being on FOX and having so-so ratings. As I predicted, there were too many signs that FOX was gearing up to cancel the show. In mid-September, they decided to put "Enlisted" (set to debut with ‘Hope that fall) on hold until midseason and run back-to-back episodes of Raising Hope instead. Add in the fact that the series would be eligible for syndication by the finale (something EP Mariano pointed out), and the drastic dive the ratings took this season (mainly thanks to being on Fridays). The 1-hour series finale will air on April 4th.
- CreatorKyle KillenStarsChristian SlaterSteve ZahnMegalyn EchikunwokeCenters on the complicated relationship between the Edwards brothers: Clark, a bipolar genius in human psychology, and Ross, a slick ex-con, who solve their clients' problems using the real science of human motivation and manipulation. On 3/27/14, ABC pulled the freshman drama from the schedule after only 5 episodes. It had fairly bad ratings from the start, which set its numbers lower than "Killer Women" (which was rushed out of the same slot due to poor ratings). Adding to that comparison, the already cancelled "Lucky 7" (also the same slot back in the fall) and "The Assets" both had higher ratings in the 2 episodes they aired before getting the boot. The total average on the 5 episodes aired puts "Mind Games" as the lowest-rated scripted series for ABC's 2013-14 TV season. Christian Slater really can't catch a break.
Encore episodes of "Resurrection" will take over the Tuesday @10pm slot until "Celebrity Wife Swap" premieres April 15th. No word on if the remaining episodes will ever see the light of day. - CreatorJane EspensonZack EstrinAdam HorowitzStarsSophie LoweMichael SochaPeter GadiotIn Victorian England, the young and beautiful Alice tells a tale of a strange new land that exists on the other side of a rabbit hole.On 3/27/14, ABC officially began promoting the season finale as a “series finale.” The spin-off to the fairytale fantasy was graced with very weak ratings. The ratings were lower than last fall’s launch of “Last Resort”. In-fact, TVLine.com pointed out that OUATIW had the lowest numbers seen in that slot for a series launch in a several years. In week two, the ratings dropped over 20%. Adding to this, every scripted series ABC has launched in the black hole that is the Thursday at 8pm slot has been cancelled. Seven shows in three years: Missing, My Generation, Charlie's Angels, Last Resort, Flash Forward, The Deep End and Zero Hour. It’s definitely a no-brainer ABC should have stuck with the original plan: 13-part miniseries scheduled to air while OUAT was on hiatus.
According to a source from TVLine.com, this does not rule out the possibility of another spinoff in a different land. It merely means the ‘Wonderland characters will not return. Who knows, maybe some will show up on the main series. This also means the finale will not have cliffhangers because it was always intended to bring the story to a conclusion within the 13 episodes. The series finale airs April 3rd. - CreatorJ.H. WymanStarsKarl UrbanMichael EalyMinka KellyIn a not-so-distant future, a human cop and an android partner team up to serve and protect. On 4/29/14, FOX cancelled the futuristic crime drama after one short season. It debuted to decent ratings, but they began to slide and even bounce around, making it a bubble show. One thing that fans have pointed out as a contributor to the show being cancelled were episodes airing out of order, something the network does frequently. FOX is also well-known for cancelling nearly every science fiction show they air. Recent shows include “Terra Nova,” “Alcatraz,” and “Touch.” There were only 13 episodes, with the final one airing March 3rd.
- CreatorAlec SulkinWellesley WildStarsSeth GreenGiovanni RibisiBrenda SongTwo successful guys in their 30's have their lives turned upside down when their nightmare dads unexpectedly move in with them.On 5/7/14, FOX cancelled the critically disliked freshman sitcom. Despite controversial humor, it debuted to fairly solid ratings. Those solid ratings dropped a great deal the following week when “NCIS” and “Agents of Shield” premiered. FOX then cut the episode order from 22 to 18 in December. Ratings began to slide and the season finale saw the lowest ratings for the series. The season average puts it ahead of already renewed “The Mindy Project” and “Glee” in both demo and total viewership. However, unlike Mindy’s saving grace of having rabid critical acclaim, “Dads” did not have that luxury. I’m not really sure what saved Glee.
- CreatorKevin BiegelStarsGeoff StultsChristopher LowellParker YoungCenters on Sgt. Pete Hill who, after a stint in Afghanistan, is stationed at a small military base in Florida to tackle the toughest job of all: leading his dysfunctional brothers' squad. On 5/7/14, FOX dishonorably discharged the Army comedy after one short season. It’s November 2013 debut was pushed to January 2014 in order to let fellow cancelled series, Raising Hope, burn off episodes faster. It debuted to so-so numbers and they continued to slide and in true FOX fashion, episodes were aired out of order. FOX put the series on an indefinite hiatus after the March 28th episode aired, leaving four episodes unaired. They will likely be burned off in the summer season or they could skip airing them and post the episode online (something most networks have been doing lately).
UPDATE (5/20/14): FOX announced the remaining episodes will be aired once a week starting June 1st at 7pm (ET). - CreatorPeter DuncanPeter TolanStarsGreg KinnearJohn OrtizMiranda OttoAn outspoken and self-destructive criminal defense lawyer takes on the most challenging cases. On 5/7/14, FOX gave the freshman drama its walking papers. The series performed very poor from the start and the ratings dropped even faster. “Rake” is the lowest-rated drama for FOX’s 2013-14 season. Its final two episodes were then burned off together on a Saturday.
- CreatorJustin HalpernPatrick SchumackerStarsChristopher MeloniRachael HarrisConnor BuckleyA boy becomes a man, and a man becomes a father, in a time before coming of age was something you could Google. On 5/7/14, FOX kicked Jack out of the house. The freshman comedy started off with decent ratings, but they dipped lower and lower each week. When it comes to total viewership, ‘Jack ranks higher than already renewed shows like “Brooklyn Nin-Nine” and “The Mindy Project.” However, when it comes to the dreaded demo numbers; it ranks between “The Mindy Project” and “Rake.” So it seems that the demo is what likely killed this show, unfortunately. The unofficial series finale is scheduled to air May 8th.
- CreatorAmy HarrisStarsAnnaSophia RobbAustin ButlerEllen WongCarrie Bradshaw is in her junior year of high school in the early 1980s. She asks her first questions about love, sex, friendship and family while navigating the worlds of high school and Manhattan. On 5/8/14, The CW said goodbye to the 1980s for good. The series which focused on the origin story of Carrie Bradshaw from HBO’s “Sex and the City” was cancelled after two short seasons. The series started off with good ratings, but they dropped by the end of the first season and it was almost cancelled. The CW only gave 13 episodes for the second season and decided to air it on Fridays. Aside from the day of the week, it was oddly similar to how the short-lived “Life Unexpected” was treated by the network. Upon airing, the ratings were very low for the majority of the season and it was one of the lowest-rated series on The CW. The strange thing about TCD being cancelled is that it was airing on Fridays and pulled better ratings (in both demo and total) than the recently renewed “Beauty and the Beast,” which aired on Mondays with a lead-in. While it was cancelled, many have stated the unofficial finale worked well as a proper farewell for the series. The series had a total of 26 episodes, with the final one airing on January 31st.
- CreatorMeredith AverillStarsAimee TeegardenMatt LanterGrey DamonAbout an epic romance between a human girl and an alien boy when he and others of his kind are integrated into a suburban high school 10 years after they landed on Earth and were consigned to an internment camp.On 5/8/14, The CW cancelled the freshman drama with one episode left. The sci-fi romance series premiered to so-so numbers at best, but the ratings were in a continuous drop since. The series ranks as between the already renewed “Hart of Dixie” and the cancelled “The Carrie Diaries.” Not to mention it is a few spots higher than the shockingly renewed “Beauty and the Beast,” which aired on the same night. The 13th and final episode will air May 12th.
- CreatorGreg BerlantiPhil KlemmerJulie PlecStarsRobbie AmellPeyton ListLuke MitchellStephen helps genetically advanced teenagers hide from a paramilitary group hunting them down.On 5/8/14, The CW cancelled their other freshman drama within the sci-fi genre. It started off very well, but had been slowly falling in the ratings. The finale had alright numbers, but nothing great. Its season average puts it above both “Hart of Dixie” and “Beauty and the Beast” in demo and total viewership. Out of three science fiction shows The CW aired this TV season, only one survived (The 100 was renewed). The unofficial series final aired on May 5th, giving a total of 22 episodes.
- CreatorAlfonso CuarónMark FriedmanStarsJake McLaughlinJohnny SequoyahJamie ChungA relationship forms between a gifted young girl and a man sprung from prison who has been tasked with protecting her from the evil elements that hunt her power. On 5/9/14, NBC stopped believing in the freshman drama. The much-hyped series from J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuaron saw big ratings for the series premiere. Upon moving to its regular night on Sundays, those ratings dropped and then slipped further in week three. While comparing the ratings of any series premiere to the episodes that follow is unfair (because they will always be smaller), this drop was partly due to NBC. Considering the shows they were going up against were “The Walking Dead,” “The Good Wife,” “Game of Thrones” and ABC’s freshman hit “Resurrection,” it’s a no-brainer that was a bad decision. Its demo ratings are currently better than already renewed “Parks and Recreation” and “Hannibal,” while the total viewership ratings are better than also renewed “Parks and Recreation” and “Hannibal.”On May 6th, NBC pulled the show from the schedule for May 18th (which is the final Sunday of May Sweeps). It seemed like they intended to have the remaining episodes resume airing the following week, but that may have changed.
- CreatorFrank KetelaarRobert KievitDavid ZabelStarsHannah WareHenry ThomasWendy MonizCenters on Sara, an unhappily married photographer who begins a torrid affair with Jack, a lawyer for a powerful family. On 5/9/14, ABC silently cancelled the poorly rated series four months after its finale. Met with mild controversy due to its subject matter (along with lack of interest), the series debuted to weak ratings. Its numbers were lower than the fall premiere of “666 Park Avenue” and on par with the spring premiere of “Red Widow.” Ratings continued to come in very low, with the final episode sealing the series’ fate. ABC has several black holes on their schedule, but the Sunday @10pm slot was definitely a problem child (after Tuesday @8pm). Since the cancellation of Brothers & Sisters in 2011, there have been a total of 4 dramas that failed to launch in the time slot: GCB, Pan Am, 666 Park Avenue and Red Widow. “Revenge” has recently taken up residence in the time slot and it’s solved the problem for now.
- CreatorDan HarmonStarsJoel McHaleDanny PudiDonald GloverA suspended lawyer is forced to enroll in a community college with an eccentric staff and student body.On 5/9/14, NBC declared ‘NO’ to “six seasons and a movie.” The cult favorite lasted five seasons, but it was always a bubble show. While the season five premiere was lower than the season four ratings, it was on-par with the season four finale numbers. However, its one-hour return was only so-so in the ratings, despite NBC actually advertising the premiere. The ratings average for both demo and total viewership are slightly up from season four, but NBC likely got tired of trying to make the show work. It is also no secret that the series has been home to non-stop drama behind the scenes involving feuds between cast & crew, firings, and quitting. The unofficial series finale aired on April 17th, giving a total of 97 episodes.
- CreatorRand RavichStarsDermot MulroneyRachael TaylorLance GrossCenters on an idealistic Secret Service agent who finds himself at the center of an international crisis on his first day on the job. In his search for the truth, he will have to cross moral and legal lines as he navigates the highest levels of power and corruption. On 5/9/14, NBC axed the mystery-thriller series after 8 episodes. It started off with lackluster ratings and had been rapidly dropping since. People likely decided to tune out or not watch the series based on the CBS “limited series” Hostages, which was widely considered a “let down.” On May 6th, NBC pulled the episode scheduled to air on May 18th (the final Sunday of May Sweeps). It was supposed to resume airing its remaining episodes on May 25th, but those plans may have been abandoned now.

Oh, and dad's blind. On 5/9/14, NBC axed another freshman comedy. The series started strong and slid down a few digits to a comfortable spot. It’s honestly a bit baffling to how this show ended up getting cancelled because its NBC’s second highest-rated comedy, right after “About a Boy.” Growing Up Fisher is definitely this year’s “Go On,” which also had very good rating and was cancelled. It ranks above already renewed “Grimm” and Parks and Recreation” in both demo and total viewership. The final episode is scheduled to air May 13th.
