- DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsLee Byung-hunChoi Min-sikJeon Gook-hwanA secret agent exacts revenge on a serial killer through a series of captures and releases.Brutal.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsOliver ReedSamantha EggarArt HindleA man tries to uncover an unconventional psychologist's therapy techniques on his institutionalized wife, amidst a series of brutal murders.Broodal.
- DirectorJoel AndersonStarsRosie TraynorDavid PledgerMartin SharpeStrange things start happening after a girl is found drowned in a lake. This movie was pretty creepy. I definitely felt uncomfortable at parts. It's amazing how something as subtle as a low quality photograph can get under my skin this much.
- DirectorClive BarkerStarsCraig ShefferDavid CronenbergAnne BobbyA troubled young man is drawn to a mythical place called Midian where a variety of friendly monsters are hiding from humanity. Meanwhile, a sadistic serial killer is looking for a patsy.I don't think I like Clive Barker movies.
- DirectorFede AlvarezStarsStephen LangJane LevyDylan MinnetteHoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems.Better than I expected.
- DirectorBob ClarkStarsJohn MarleyLynn CarlinRichard BackusA young soldier killed in the Vietnam War inexplicably shows up at his family home on the night of his death.Pretty decent. Not at all better than Black Christmas, but worth a watch.
- DirectorArthur PennStarsMary SteenburgenRoddy McDowallJan RubesA fledgling actress is lured to a remote mansion for a screen-test, soon discovering she is actually a prisoner in the middle of a blackmail plot. It's not at all perfect. The acting is spotty. The main character does alot of stupid sh*t. But I sort of liked it. Even though it's a horror drama, it had this warm and cozy feel to it.
- DirectorFrank LaLoggiaStarsLukas HaasLen CariouAlex RoccoAn author tells the story of how, as a young boy growing up in a 1960s small town, he was haunted after witnessing the murder of a little girl.I wanted to give this a second chance and I liked it a bit more this time. I still maintain that the main audience for this movie are people that grew up with it, though. But there are some things to appreciate. It has one really creepy moment in it that I think would've absolutely horrified me as a kid. I also didn't realise the last time I watched it that Moe Greene played the dad, so that was a fun surprise.
- DirectorJoseph ZitoStarsErich AndersonJudie AronsonPeter BartonAfter being announced dead and taken to a morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives, escapes from the hospital, and stalks a group of friends renting a house in the countryside near Crystal Lake.Probably the best Friday the 13th movie that I've seen, although I'd only seen part 1 and 2 previous and I saw the first one over 10 years ago. But I don't remember liking it that much.
This is pretty much exactly what I want from a dumb slasher movie, dumb teens being murdered in fun ways. - DirectorAri AsterStarsFlorence PughJack ReynorVilhelm BlomgrenA couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.Review on my 2019 list.
- DirectorKevin KölschDennis WidmyerStarsAlexandra EssoeAmanda FullerNoah SeganA hopeful young starlet uncovers the ominous origins of the Hollywood elite and enters into a deadly agreement in exchange for fame and fortune. It's finally here! Starry Eyes is the hipstery movie you love to brag about having seen to your friends that you've all been waiting for. It stars people who look like other people that are much more famous and has more blood than a butcher's shop! Great for the whole family.
No, but seriously, this was a pretty great movie. They definitely accomplished on what they set out to do with this. It's extremely uncomfortable at parts, it's engaging as f'k and over before you know it. The main actress Alex Essoe does a fantastic job. There's so many stages she has to go through doing this role and she nails all of them. I wasn't kidding though when I said that the people in this movie looks like other people - she looks like a mix between Shelley Duvall and Daisy Ridley. And I guess I'm not alone on that because I found out after the fact that she'll be playing Wendy Torrance in the upcoming Doctor Sleep (previously played by Shelley Duvall). The producer looks like Richard Chamberlain, Ray Wise, Udo Kier and he talks like Michael Christopher. That one girl looked a bit like Aubrey Plaza, that other girl looks like Ellen Page and Amber Tamblyn. That one guy looked a bit like Jack Whitehall. Whatever, not really important, it's just something that I think is fun.
Go watch this movie. It's probably alot better than Pet Sematary. - DirectorLarry StewartPeter CraneStarsVera MilesClu GulagerDaphne ZunigaAn amnesiac sorority member who has been plagued by a recurring nightmare is stalked alongside other coeds by a killer in a deserted department store where they are completing a hazing ritual. This was a pleasant surprise. I was just expecting a dumb slasher and in a way it kind of was, but the director kept finding ways of making the scenes visually interesting, even if it's just a subtle pan. The camera moved around alot and a big portion of the static shots had layers to them. I also liked the score. It had a John Carpenter vibe to it, but not to the point when it's just ripping him off.
The twist at the end, although unexpected, felt very rushed. It's like 3 minutes left of the movie when it's revealed and then the movie just ends. It could've been stretched a bit longer, if only just 5 minutes. The movie wouldn't have suffered because it's not slow or boring in the slightest.
The movie also had some hilarious extras. There's one scene when the mom is looking for a teacher. She asks a student which gives her directions and next to her is this black guy who just stares at the mom like she's a f'king idiot. He doesn't say anything, he's just standing there looking very confused, it was really funny. - DirectorDario ArgentoStarsDavid HemmingsDaria NicolodiGabriele LaviaA jazz pianist and a wisecracking journalist are pulled into a complex web of mystery after the former witnesses the brutal murder of a psychic. Why can't I learn? I hate Dario Argento. His movies are sh*t. They have visuals and style, but absolutely no substance. I also hate dubbing in movies, so that's a huge setback as well.
I have to stop giving this guy more chances, for some reason I always put his films on my October lists in hope that I'll like one of them, but it never happens. - DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsChristopher WalkenBrooke AdamsTom SkerrittA man awakens from a coma to discover he has a psychic ability to foresee future events. It was alright. It was more of a Stephen King movie than a David Cronenberg movie, which was a shame. I wanted the other way around. I also felt that the movie had run its course early into the third act and it lost my interest. The ending was pretty cool, though.
- DirectorPhilip RidleyStarsViggo MortensenLindsay DuncanJeremy CooperIn the 1950s, a young boy living with his troublesome family in rural USA fantasizes that a neighboring widow is actually a vampire, responsible for a number of disappearances in the area. This is not a horror movie, this is a tragedy. Why is it listed as horror?
- DirectorBen WheatleyStarsNeil MaskellMyAnna BuringHarry SimpsonNearly a year after a botched job, a hitman takes a new assignment with the promise of a big payoff for three killings. What starts off as an easy task soon unravels, sending the killer into the heart of darkness. One of the best so far in my opinion. This year has, unintentionally, had alot of occult stuff and that's always fun. I really liked the tone of this movie. It was well made and had some solid acting. My only complaint would be with the sound mixing. The lows are extremely low and the highs are extremely high, which is a problem because alot of the dialogue is mumbled. I had to bring my big ears to the screening because there were no subtitles eitehr for some reason. Import, yes, but there's usually an option for subtitles for people with poor hearing. But otherwise, the movie was top notch!
- DirectorSteve BeckStarsJulianna MarguliesGabriel ByrneRon EldardA salvage crew discovers a long-lost 1962 passenger ship floating lifeless in a remote region of the Bering Sea, and soon notices that its long-dead inhabitants may still be on board. This was sh*t and I can't say that I'm mad about it, because I expected it would be. This wasn't even on my radar. But I subbed it in for Event Horizon after playing through Man of Medan. I wanted to see the similarities and there were tons. It's the only reason to watch this. Man of Medan wasn't good either, but I'd only recommend this if you liked that game.
This would actually be ripe for a remake as well because it's really dated. - DirectorTom HollandStarsCatherine HicksChris SarandonAlex VincentA struggling single mother unknowingly gifts her son a doll imbued with a serial killer's consciousness.Middle of the road for me. It didn't interest me, but it's not bad.
- DirectorTom SaviniStarsTony ToddPatricia TallmanTom TowlesWhen the unburied dead return to life and seek human victims, seven refugees shelter in a house in the Pennsylvanian countryside.I haven't seen the original in a long time, but as far as I can tell this was almost a beat for beat remake. I mean, it was a fine movie, but what was the point of remaking this?
- DirectorHideo NakataStarsHitomi KurokiRio KannoMirei OguchiA mother and her 6-year-old daughter move into a creepy apartment whose every surface is permeated by water. When I was about 10 years old I saw a scene from a movie where a little girl is in her bathroom and the bathtub starts running dark and dirty water by itself. It creeped me the f'k out.
There's gotta be at least one late 90's-early 2000's Japanese horror movie on these lists. Dark Water was probably my favorite one since Ringu. Let me just say that Hideo Nakata knows what he's doing. A problem that alot of these kinds of movies have is that they focus too much on characters investigating stuff and slowly building tension. The huge emphasis on these elements ultimately leads to alot of them having long stretches of boredom. What I'm saying is that Hideo Nakata knows how to utilise the runtime of his films. They don't overstay their welcome. They also have long scenes of building tension, but he always throws in creative shots to make the scene move at a faster pace.
Also this movie really creeped me out at times. The elevator scene has a moment, similar to a scene in the movie Shutter, where a character think they're interracting with someone they know and then it turns out that they're not. There's another moment just like this in The Haunting of Hill House and it's one of the scariest things ever to me. - DirectorAna Lily AmirpourStarsSheila VandArash MarandiMarshall ManeshIn the Iranian ghost-town Bad City, a place that reeks of death and loneliness, the townspeople are unaware they are being stalked by a lonesome vampire.Really solid horror movie. I like the concept of a vampire falling in love. I liked the soundtrack and the tone. It had great cinematography. The cat stole the show, though. Best cat in a movie ever.
