- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years. Is this the movie I've been waiting for all my life? Could be!
I was so speechless when the credits started rolling and during the entire drive home. It probably has the greatest visual effects of all time. I also think it has the greatest production design that I have ever seen - and that includes Tarkovsky's Stalker. Something I absolutely adored about movies is when great character actors are cast in every small role. This can be applied to 2049 and it had several of my favorites: Wood Harris, David Dastmalchian, Lennie James, Barked Abdi... the list goes on. I also loved the fact that almost all the female roles were played by people I'd never heard of before and they all did a fantastic job. I haven't even mentioned Ryan Gosling or Harrison Ford yet. Let's just say that I'm confident it's the best performances I've seen from both of them.
Roger Deakins does some of the best cinematography I've ever seen, his Oscar is in reach once again and I think he may have secured it this time. This movie will also secure Denis Villeneuve's spot in the director's hall of fame, AKA he will definitely go down in history as one of the greatest directors of all time. If it wasn't already inevitable it most certainly is now.
The climax was jaw-dropping, heart-breaking and almost tear-jerking. That water scene was on the same level as the diner scene in Mulholland Drive is for me. It's the most I've been engaged watching a scene unfold in a very long time (In film that is, because both Twin Peaks: The Return and Mr. Robot have had the same effect on me more recently). If this movie doesn't sweep the Oscars at least a little bit I will go full Columbine on the Academy and Hollywood in general - that is a threat. If possible watch this movie on the big screen and make sure to pay for it. Movies like these should be the ones being mass-produced instead of comic book movies that are all the same and yet keep getting great reviews.
Blade Runner 2049 gets a well deserved 10/10. - DirectorChristopher NolanStarsFionn WhiteheadBarry KeoghanMark RylanceAllied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.It pleased me in all the ways, in storytelling, directing, cinematography, acting, score etc. Harry Styles did not disappoint! I was a bit confused about the expository text in the beginning - not the very beginning, but the "1. Air -- 1 Hour" title cards. But as the movie progressed it all fell into place in a wonderful way. I can't stress enough how much I love the storytelling in this movie and it vaguely reminded me of Memento. The only reason this movie doesn't get a 10/10 is because the ending left me slightly confused.
SPOILERS
I'm under the impression that Gibson drowned. But I'm pretty sure I saw him sitting in Mark Rylance's boat later. This confused me greatly and I will have to watch it again to find this out. When everyone was covered in oil it was difficult to separate everyone from each other. Also Cillian Murphy was given surprisingly little to do in the film. I don't mind a decision like this but I would like to see more of him at the end.
Anyways, loved this movie.
9/10 - DirectorBenny SafdieJosh SafdieStarsRobert PattinsonBenny SafdieJennifer Jason LeighAfter a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Connie Nikas embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City's underworld to get his brother Nick out of jail.Nothing short of amazing. Great performances by everyone including people who only showed up for a few seconds. Even Necro was fantastic! I thought he was just cast as a novelty but he did a great job. My favourite cameo was by Barkhad Abdi though. His performance was just as great as both Robert Pattinson's and Benny Safdie's. His scene was really heartbreaking actually. The directing and cinematography was so incredibly vivid and vibrant. Combine that with the top notch score and it got sort of a hypnotic feel to it. The movie was a roller coaster ride of excitement and it felt half its length. Please check this one out if you haven't already.
9/10 - DirectorOz PerkinsStarsEmma RobertsKiernan ShipkaLucy BoyntonTwo girls must battle a mysterious evil force when they get left behind at their boarding school over winter break.Wow. I mean, this is on par with some of the greatest horror movie of all time in my opinion, like The Witch and It Follows before it. I may have liked this one even better than the previous. Everything was just so perfect, it was all I want out of a modern horror movie. It's atmospheric as hell, the score is fantastic, the acting is phenomenal, the characters are great, the story is unpredictable and methodical. I can go on forever. So it really hurts me when I go "online" and read all these half-*ssed reviews by idiots saying it was confusing and boring. Like, I get that if people aren't used to slow paced movies like this they won't enjoy it as thoroughly as me. However when you transform "I didn't understand anything" to "it was a bad movie" baby, we've got a problem.
More of this please.
9/10 so far, might reach a 10 on my second viewing. - DirectorRuben ÖstlundStarsClaes BangElisabeth MossDominic WestA prestigious Stockholm museum's chief art curator finds himself in times of both professional and personal crisis as he attempts to set up a controversial new exhibit. At times I was laughing my a** off - at times I almost covered my eyes in terror. This movie was all over the place in the best of ways. It was mainly funny but the moments that aren't supposed to be aren't. The moments that are supposed to be funny is exactly my type of humour. Claes Bang gave a great performance, although as a Swede I had a really hard f'king time understanding what he said and found it weird that no one else did (He is Danish in case you didn't know). Also during one scene they kept using the same audio recordings over and over in a very distracting way.
Besides that this movie was great. It had the best dance scene in the history of dance scenes, no I'm not exaggerating, I was almost in tears. Not sure if it deserved the Palme d'or, but it was pretty amazing nevertheless.
8/10 - DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsChanning TatumAdam DriverDaniel CraigTwo brothers attempt to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina.Steven Soderbergh delivering yet another great heist movie! I think this one was funnier than his previous ones, that includes Out of Sight which is my favourite movie of all time. Everything Adam Driver did was hilarious. And I love it when movies have great actors in small roles.
The plot and storytelling was great and not predictable in any way. The only thing that confused me was that I thought Riley Keough was Channing Tatum's girlfriend at first - not their sister.
Anyways, really fun and competent movie worth checking out.
7/10 - DirectorM. Night ShyamalanStarsJames McAvoyAnya Taylor-JoyHaley Lu RichardsonThree girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.M. Night Shyamalan has risen from the dead, ladies and gentlemen. This was in my opinion his best movie since Unbreakable. Who could've foreseen this? I thought that his career was doomed for sure! I am so happy right now! Because when M. Night is at the top of his game he is magnificent.
Now let's talk about the actual movie. The acting was fantastic. Not all of it though, the two other girls weren't so great. Haley Lu Richardson was okay but not the greatest. But Jessica Sula was just awful, she could not express emotions at all. However Anya Taylor-Joy did a really good job. With this and The Witch she's proving herself to be a very promising acting talent. James McAvoy though... I sincerely hope the Oscars will remember him next year because his performance, or rather performances, were truly amazing.
Speaking of plural, I wish we didn't already know from the trailer and the plot description on here that he had multiple personalities. That one scene when they find that out would've been so much better without that knowledge. I guess it would've been harder to sell if people weren't allowed to know that, what a shame. The story was really intriguing and the movie was very well paced. The comic relief felt genuine and I wasn't under the impression that they were only following a Hollywood checklist. I found the CD scene absolutely hilarious. And the humour was really well balanced out with the tension.
I really want to talk about the ending but I don't want to spoil anything. I'll just ask to people who've seen it: Do you think they were setting up some sort of a sequel? I liked that that one thing happened at the end - I got a bit suspicious of something like that to happen when the music first started playing. But I can't really make an objective connection. If anyone want to discuss this with me I'm all yours.
Let's hope M. Night stays at this level from now on.
8/10 - DirectorTaylor SheridanStarsElizabeth OlsenJeremy RennerGraham GreeneA wildlife officer, who is haunted by a tragedy that happened because of him, teams up with an FBI agent in solving a murder of a young woman on a Wyoming Native American reservation and hopes to get redemption from his past regrets.Initially it didn't particularly feel like my kind of film but as it went along it got better and better and the third act of this movie was nothing short of amazing. It's a who-dun-it that, instead of going through a series of interrogations and convoluted investigations, tells a simple story and puts its emphasis on characterisation. The movie was almost 2 hours long but didn't feel like it at all. When the revelations started to occur it caught me off guard because I was expecting alot more plot more to transpire. Now, having a very dense plot in a movie like this with alot of what I previously mentioned is not a bad thing by any means - Prisoners, for instance, is is my opinion one of the best movies of the decade, but it was nice and refreshing to see a similar movie told in a very different way.
The acting was great by everyone and one particularly great actor showed up later in the film that I had no idea was going to show up, which was a very pleasant surprise. The directing and shot composition was great in a way that makes you think Taylor Sheridan has been directing films for years. The score was a bit strange though. Although the instrumental parts were really immersing, there were some vocal whispers coming through at some points that struck me as odd and distracting - but that's a subjective thing and I can understand why someone would like it.
8/10 - DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.I really liked this one. It was very heartfelt, well paced, well written and well acted. It's not a movie that aims to change the world or anything and alot of times that's exactly what I want. In any case it's the kind of movies that I want to make. I saw influence from both Wes Anderson and Whit Stillman without being too obvious and plagiaristic (in lack of a better word). With her first movie Greta Gerwig is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. The movie doesn't warrant a whole bunch of discussion, basically it comes down to characters and tone. I loved both these aspects of the film, thus its high spot on my list.
By the way, there was a Cannibal Ox poster in Timothée Chalamet's room, which was truly amazing. Not only because they're really obscure, but Iron Galaxy is in my top 3 favourite songs of all time.
8/10 - DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsBryan CranstonLaurence FishburneSteve CarellThirty years after they served together in Vietnam, a former Navy Corpsman Larry "Doc" Shepherd re-unites with his old buddies, former Marines Sal Nealon and Reverend Richard Mueller, to bury his son, a young Marine killed in the Iraq War.Lovely movie. A perfect movie for Richard Linklater to make. It's a heartfelt story that also has alot of humour in it, but not unnecessary humour that distracts you from the core of what's going on. It's a perfect balance between the two. It also has a similar tone to The End of the Tour, a movie that I'm a big fan of. Good acting on all parts, I especially liked Washington. He was a nice addition to the trio, and also his goal provided by the colonel was achieved without any negative repercussions for the main characters. That was another nice touch to the story.
7/10 - DirectorTrey Edward ShultsStarsJoel EdgertonChristopher AbbottCarmen EjogoSecure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.Pure atmosphere. I love it! My only flaws are some minor character actions. The rest of it were all handled very well. The movie did suspense, mystery and creepiness extremely well. Acting was great by everyone. The directing was also great and makes me curious to check out Krisha as well. I loved the fact that we didn't get any exposition on the world and their current predicament, but rather let us imagine the whole thing. The music was also really great, something that's very essential to me when I'm watching movies - and playing video games.
Oh, one more flaw though. I felt the child character was really under-developed. He pretty much set off the third act with something that wasn't established nor resolved. The movie was only 90 minutes so to add one more scene where you establish this would've been easy and serve the plot much better.
Otherwise the movie was great.
8/10 - DirectorAndrey ZvyagintsevStarsMaryana SpivakAleksey RozinMatvey NovikovA couple going through a divorce must team up to find their son who has disappeared during one of their bitter arguments. This was the first movie by Andrey Zvyagintsev that I watched, it shouldn't have been, but it was, and it was great. The first half was great character and world building and the second half reminded me alot of Prisoners, both in subject matter and tone. It was meticulously directed and shot, all of the acting was great and the score was fantastic. Even though the meat of the story doesn't really set off until like 45 minutes in, the movie is anything but boring. It went by so fast that I only thought it had been 20 minutes. The pacing is excellent.
No spoilers, but the ending felt a bit too much like Once Upon a Time in Anatolia though.
9/10 - DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsJohn BoyegaAnthony MackieAlgee SmithFact-based drama set during the 1967 Detroit riots in which a group of rogue police officers respond to a complaint with retribution rather than justice on their minds.Great movie. A bunch of great actors doing their thing. I usually prefer slick and smooth camerawork over handheld, shaky and intense camerawork. However, in this movie it they used that to their advantage. It made every scene more tense and immersive. It certainly didn't feel like it was 2 hours and 20 minutes long. At times it was a bit cheesy and at times the sequence of events were a bit predictable. Not drastically though, so it didn't ruin any of the excitement.
Also, it's great to see all these actors from The Wire showing up in these big movies. Clarke Peters in Three Billboards and Gbenga Akinnagbe showed up in this one and did a wonderful job, albeit his part wasn't that big. I'm surprised that this didn't get any oscar nominations. No best picture, no nom for Kathryn Bigelow, I think John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jason Mitchell and Jack Reynor could all qualify as contenders for acting nominations. The guy who played Aubrey was fantastic as well. Everyone was great actually.
8/10 - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMeryl StreepTom HanksSarah PaulsonA cover-up spanning four U.S. Presidents pushes the country's first female newspaper publisher and her editor to join an unprecedented battle between press and government.I don't know, I just really like newspapers leaking classified information movies. And correct me if I'm wrong but this movie had alot more visual flare to it than Spielbergs latest films before this. Alot of the time the actors were given one shot to have their conversations, this is something I highly encourage. One-take shots are always fascinating even if they only contain two people talking to each other. It was a great ensemble cast as well. The Post had alot of stuff going for it when it comes to my personal taste. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's pretty damn good. It's not better than All President's Men, of course few movies are, but it's better than Spotlight which won best picture.
7/10 - DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.I liked this movie more than I thought I would. You know, there's a fair amount of fluff, that is to be expected, I already knew that going into it. Which is why the great moments really caught me off guard. The movie shines so bright when they're arguing on set. Even if you find James Franco's performance to be distracting through the film, it's not noticeable at all during these scenes. I mean it, the scene when everyone lose their sh*t during the filming of the sex scene was one of my favourite scenes of the year. The rest of the movie is good, I liked all of it. But nothing else reaches the height that those scenes does and it's probably the closest to reality that we'll ever get. I've never read the book, so I can't complain about how James Franco captures the true story in the wrong way. Instead I just watched the story unfold. I knew that it wasn't 100% genuine, but it didn't really bother me that much. The ending felt a bit too self-masturbatory though.
6/10 - DirectorSean BakerStarsBrooklynn PrinceBria VinaiteWillem DafoeSet over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.Better than Tangerine, but I'm not sure if I liked it more than Tangerine. I think I like them both equally. This is stunt casting at its finest. The children are all realistic and all act realistic. This is the first time in a LOONG time where I've seen a child crying on screen and believed it. The mother was also fantastically realistic. And to combine these non-actors with such a refined and almost legendary actor like Willem Dafoe made it all flow in a really profound way. In terms of story there's not much going on. It's just slice of life in a specific type of setting. If that's not your thing, then this movie is not going to be enjoyable for you. It's not necessarily my type of film either so I didn't love it. However, I really liked it. It's a great film and totally worth checking out and it should've been nominated for more Oscars, especially best picture.
8/10 - DirectorAaron SorkinStarsJessica ChastainIdris ElbaKevin CostnerThe true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target. This movie moved. Leave it to Aaron Sorkin to write and surprisingly direct an almost 2 and a half movie about poker, something I will never comprehend no matter how many times it'll be explained to me, that runs faster than a cheetah at top speed. The filmmaking reminded me at times of a Guy Ritchie movie and at times a Danny Boyle movie, but at the same time it truly was its own thing. Like, I don't think Guy Ritchie could make a movie at this length being this quick and well written. This leads me to the script which is air tight. Aaron Sorkin writes dialogue that's so incredibly cinematic. It's bordering on unrealistic, but the way the movie is made makes it work, much like David Mamet's writing in Glengarry Glen Ross which for the record is in my top 10 favourites of all time. Why mention this? I'm simply giving this movie the praise it deserves, because it doesn't seem to be getting it anywhere else. Best actress: Sure, it's tough spread this year and Jessica Chastain lost fair game. Supporting actor: I personally think that Idris Elba is more deserving of a nod than Woody Harrelson. Best picture? Well, it's hell of alot better than Darkest Hour.
8/10 - DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsBarry G. BernsonHerb CaillouetBill CampSteven, a charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.I expected this to be more funny, but it was mostly disturbing. There were still some really twisted humour in this, just not as much as I thought it would be. I wish I hadn't known anything about this movie before going into it. I think that would have made my viewing experience even more fascinating. I do this as often as I can, however with this particular movie I had stumbled upon a plot synopsis before watching it. Which is a shame because I liked The Lobster so I would've seen this movie regardless.
It was expertly made. The camerawork in particular was fantastic. Its style was reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick with a dash of Nuri Bilge Ceylan. The acting was great. The reveal of character was excellent. The score was haunting, especially that one part that kind of sort of sounded like a wobbly rearrangement of a race car. I'm placing it at this spot as of this moment because I'm not sure how much replay value this will have in the future for me. I really liked it now, however I know myself and I might not have much interest to rewatch it a few months from now.
9/10 - DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsFrances McDormandWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit.Very solid movie. Great cast, directing and story. There were alot of familiar faces showing up as the entire supporting cast, which like I've said is something I love. I think Frances McDormand should get her oscar for this. I don't think Woody Harrelson should've been nominated. He was good but not oscar worthy. Not when you have performances like Benny Safdie in Good Time or Idris Elba in Molly's Game.
An issue I have with the story is the lack of action taken against Sam Rockwell by Clarke Peters. Logically the ending or even the third act wouldn't happen if Sam Rockwell was treated with realism at this part in the story. It was really weird, but the movie didn't fall apart completely because of it - it had enough going for it at that point.
The movie wasn't better than In Bruges which is close to flawless in my opinion, but still a great movie.
8/10 - DirectorNoah BaumbachStarsAdam SandlerGrace Van PattenDustin HoffmanAn estranged family gathers together in New York City for an event celebrating the artistic work of their father.Another solid Noah Baumbach movie. It makes me sad that Adam Sandler doesn't care about his acting, because when he does films with competent directors he's really good! Everyone is really good in this movie, it's a great cast. It's a very Noah Baumbach story, but at times it almost feels like a Woody Allen movie as well. All the characters were three-dimensional and interesting. The movie was both funny and sad in a way that it blended very well together.
Yeah, I don't have that much to say about the movie but I liked it alot.
8/10 - DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.OOOboy.
This got really depressing at points which is something I wasn't expecting. There were ALOT of things in this movie that I wasn't expecting, which already makes it leagues better than Rogue One. There were great character reveals, character moments and it was possibly the most human and organic movie in the Star Wars franchise. Now, was it better than The Force Awakens?
I'm not sure. In order for me to really give a fleshed out review I will have to watch it again. Alot of my judgment is blocked right now because the story didn't go the specific way I wanted it to. It went to the doorstep and pointed inside, but then it switched the tables on me and went a completely different direction. That is a great thing on its own, but I really really wanted the story to go that other way, so I'm a bit disappointed. Now that I know what the movie is I can watch it with a more open mind and fully appreciate it for what it is. I still really liked the movie for its action, characters and humour. This was without a doubt the funniest Star Wars movie ever. The comedy was spot on and to my memory it didn't fall flat on its face a single time. Well done Mr. Johnson!!
7/10 so far. - DirectorJames MangoldStarsHugh JackmanPatrick StewartDafne KeenIn a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety. This is one that people didn't overhype. Logan is one of the best action movies of the decade. It's how I want my comic movies to be like. Raw, gritty and full of risk-taking. A blockbuster rated R, like Deadpool before it. Now Deadpool had alot of problems simply because of its R rating. It has obnoxious cursing and rude language just because it could - and I absolutely despised it. Logan, however, did it just right. It felt like every "f'k" and "sh*t" had a purpose. Nobody excessively swore just for the sake of swearing. Everyone swore because of how sh*tty everything is around them. The acting was great. Hugh Jackman gave one of his best performances. Although, that Boyd Holbrook - I don't like him. I think he's an extremely wooden one-note actor and he didn't prove himself otherwise in this role. The pacing was great and the action was executed fantastically. There was no annoying comic relief character - THANK YOU! Check this one out if you haven't already.
8/10 - DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point. Not quite as good as Split. This was a directoral debut and you can tell. Jordan Peele still haven't quite found his style yet because it was made in a pretty much standard way technically. Some stuff was probably put in there as a checklist item rather than as a necessity for the film's identity - for example a couple of unnecessary jump scares and stock score that could've easily been left out. The comic relief character of Rod was funny to me for extremely inside joke reasons but as for the actual character the comedy fell flat at times. The big twist was too much for me as well. I could've done without a certain aspect of it that I'm not going to get into.
Although my obvious flaws with it I still think it was a pretty good movie. Daniel Kaluuya was fantastic in the lead performance. Never once did I imagine him being an actor playing a fictional character but instead saw him as an extremely realistic person. Everyone else did a great job too with my hat going off to Lakeith Stanfield in particular. Peele's directing was also spot on when it most mattered. The way he created tension felt meticulous in a way that felt almost too real. He also planted seeds in the beginning of the film that were really well reincorporated towards the end, kind of. Again no spoilers but if you've seen the movie that one moment really got me and was handled perfectly.
Good stuff.
7/10 - DirectorDanny BoyleStarsEwan McGregorEwen BremnerJonny Lee MillerAfter 20 years abroad, Mark Renton returns to Scotland and reunites with his old friends Sick Boy, Spud, and Begbie. The trailer made it look like it was just Trainspotting again but I'm glad that it wasn't that, it was actually a sequel. It wasn't nearly as fantastic as the first one but it was a solid sequel with both fun and emotional moments. Danny Boyle is a great director so it wasn't surprising that the movie was competently directed and written. Also the actors were all great as to be expected. I don't have much to say about it, really. It was a fun watch and I would recommend it if you like the first one. But it wasn't an amazing film.
6-7/10 - DirectorZak HilditchStarsThomas JaneMolly ParkerDylan SchmidA simple yet proud farmer in the year 1922 conspires to murder his wife for financial gain, convincing his teenage son to assist. But their actions have unintended consequences.A very tense movie including probably the best acting that Thomas Jane has ever delivered. It had a really creepy atmosphere, mostly thanks to the score, and at times the imagery was genuinely terrifying. Check it out if you haven't, if you own Netflix I don't see why you shouldn't.
7/10
