Midsommar (2019)
A mind bending exploration of a toxic relationship.
This film was a mind-blowing ride. It is not a perfect movie, but it did almost everything perfectly, and I believe that it's to some extent underrated.
To kick things off, the cinematography was a work of art; it was very beautiful and unsettling. Also, the visual story telling was done beautifully through composition and framing, echoing the story. The visuals are overall well-crafted and gorgeous. In terms of directing, this film was a slow-burning candle that focused on delivering a beautiful but horrifying experience. Ari did an amazing job crafting his vision for this film; his vision is very interesting and beautiful. The music and sounds were very good, and the use of strings was perfect to echo the horrifying nature of the film. For the script, it is a rich and interesting story that explores many themes, but essentially it's a study of a toxic relationship, one of the fascinating things about this story, is that this relationship is being echoed and illustrated by the main plot of the cult, which i thought was good, but here comes my main problem with this picture, this very great potential wasn;t used very well, atleast not obviously, which made the film seem a little dry at the end and unfullfiling, i think that that idea should have been used more efficiently to have a noticable effect on the viewing experiece, it was done in a very sutble way, which didn't allow the viewier to fully experience the duality of the plot. I also think that, like many other "horror" films, this one introduces this unseen scary concept, whatever it is-in this case, it's the cult-but these films never really explore those concepts; we never see conclusions, we never understand, which is too bad for this film because I found great interest in this particular mythology. I understand that it wasn't as much about the cult as it was about the relationship, but even that wasn't very effective and was a little disappointing. I believe a great movie should make both the main plot and the inner plot amazing and fully explore both of their potential, especially since we had almost three hours of run time. With that being said, it is an amazing, horrifying, and enjoyable experience.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
A tale worthy of viewing.
This film, was touching and beautiful, but nevertheless, it failed greatly at times, which is exactly why this picture is slightly overrated. In favor of the film we had great performances by the lead actors, and a rather good performance by Willem Dafoe, but poor performances from almost every other actor/actress. We had a beautiful and emotional story that explores a classic love tale, it was directed nicely and the music was decent. But the script suffered greatly from unrealistic plot points, cringe and unbelievable dialogue, the character of Gus didn't have much realism. So the writing in general wasn't anything exceptional. In terms of directing, i thought the rhythm was terrible at times. The cinematography was alright, not bad but it didn't do much (if anything at all) in terms of visual story telling through composition and such. With that being said, it is a very beautiful story with very beautiful people that was told in a beautiful way, and it is definitely an experience to enjoy, it is not a cinematic score, therefore do not expect much from it if you are looking for a rather cinematic experience, but trust me bro, its not Twilight, :)
