Scooby-Doo (2002)
Rotsauce Rachacha!
Upon discovering this on IMDb i was disgusted! 4.9!? What an outrage! OK so maybe it's no shawshank but for a kids movie It's pretty enjoyable and as this was a childhood favorite of mine i felt it was my duty to defend it (along with it's sequel).
Now as much as this film hits me with nostalgia i know it's not the only factor that makes me love this film. I re-watched part of spy kids 2 recently (which was another childhood fave of mine) and thought it was complete trash. I didn't feel this way about scoobs. The film does more than take a mediocre cartoon and and put real actors in it, if anything i would say the film is a parody of the show like the Brady bunch movie (though not to as much of an extent).
It shows us mystery inc in today's environment and it makes them real adults. The film is genuinely funny to with plenty of adult humor (smoke pouring from the van while playing Rasta music only to be revealed as shaggy and scooby cooking was great) and all the slapstick humor isn't overly cringey.
The casting is amazing, particularly for shaggy and velma. Fred does come off as a bit douchey though and scooby can sometimes get annoying. The climax is admittedly pretty awful and the films is packed with corny moments but i would be lying if i didn't say i loved it.
I'm not saying this deserves to be 10/10 and i can understand why people don't like it but i don't think it deserves so much hate either. 7 zoinks out of jinkies. The sequel is better though.
The Filthy Frank Show: Human Cake (2016)
A masterpiece of epic proportions
The first word that comes to mind when i think of human cake is "WOW". This is easily the best short film of all time and the best ending to a trilogy since the good the bad and the ugly. The story takes place in realm 3856 about 80,000 chromosomes ago where the holy trinity of youtube (filthy frank, idubbbz and maxmoefoe) set out to create the greatest cake of all time.
The main cast is simply amazing, along with plenty of cameos and spit facts. There are so many iconic moments such as the part where they eat the cake and the part where they vomit. But behind the vomit is a deeper meaning. The film is a metaphor for the pointlessness of life and the idea that god has abandoned us. It really shines a light on idubbbz and the meaning behind his immortal quote, "i have crippling depression".In this sense the film is very reminiscent of the song "wake me up" by evanescence.
If i could give this more than 10 stars i would. It's better than mildly adequate, it's pretty good.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Interesting premise and great performances ruined by a messy plot
I recently watched this on TV, as a lover of cult films i expected a lot from this but i was left disappointed. while I understand why this film has acquired its cult status, its a bit overrated. Its not a bad film, its just not that great.
It starts off promising as a recently engaged couple get stranded on a road and seek for help in a castle they passed by, only to find out its full of freaks. The beginning has some really good scenes and also the best songs in the film. It starts going down hill when DR. Franken- Furter unveils his Frankenstein's monster like creation and from there they seem to forget to add some plot in-between songs. The songs from there on are pretty mediocre. there not bad but i only watched the film a couple of days ago and I've forgotten them completely which isn't a good sign.
My main issue with this movie is that for what are supposed to be a deeply in love couple they don't have much interaction. In fact from my memory they don't even talk to each other for the last 2/3 of the movie which is ridiculous. They both cheat on each other but there is absolutely no conflict/consequence because of it. Instead of addressing temptation in a relationship the film just acts like it never happened. The characters are also all over the place. They can go from mild mannered to angry for no apparent reason and you cant tell who's side the characters are on. DR. Franken-Furter starts off as the bad guy then becomes the good guy with no context. If the films excuse for that is that the couple has been driven mad then they must have been mentally unstable beforehand because it doesn't take much to push them over the edge. I get its supposed to be a parody but that doesn't excuse bad writing.
The biggest redeeming feature of this film are the actors. Tim Curry is amazing as DR. Franken-Furter and the film is worth seeing for his performance alone.Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon are also great (and it helps that she is half naked for the majority of the film). The whole cast does a great job.
regardless the film is fun and worth a watch even if it is dumb.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2 (2013)
Everything Batman v Superman should have been
If you've already seen Batman v Superman you know how much of a disappointment it is. While it has its moments it remains an overstuffed mess of a film, more like a trailer for upcoming films than a film on its own merits. This is the perfect example of how that movie should have been made. Taken almost word for word and shot for shot from Frank Millers timeless graphic novel, The Dark Knight Returns is one of the best comic book movies ever made. The animation is great and the fight scene with superman itself is easily the high point and batman uses far more tricks and tactics than in BvS where they pretty much just punched each other. Aside from that the rest of the story is great as well, focusing around the batman and the jokers final confrontation. The only wrong with this is the voice acting. While Batman wasn't too bad this has what i think is the worst version of the joker I've seen. The voice doesn't capture the jokers personality and makes him sound like a stereotypical gay (not that theirs anything wrong with that but it doesn't suit the joker). I just cant help but fell that the film would have benefited from Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamils Talents. Nevertheless this is a must see for all Batman fans.
