- Laws are enacted to maintain order. It is however only one component of social control to maintain that order: "custom" is what we usually do, "moral code" is what we feel we should do, and "law" is what we must do. A story is presented demonstrating these three items, and how law, the one which society has the greatest ability to change, can be used to maintain that order. A members only teen canteen run by its members has its own laws, such as closing time. While it is reliably busy on weekends up until that closing time of 23:00, it is less so on weekdays. It thus can be a late evening for the three person clean-up crew, who cannot begin that work until after closing. One weeknight, Jean and Betty, two of the three on the clean-up crew this evening, discover that their third, Jack, has ducked out. Jack later explains that he had to leave to meet curfew, a problem of many of their other members. In a subsequent business meeting with their adult advisers, who outline the customs and moral code which direct them, they talk about the "law" of their closing time which they or the city have the ability to change within those other two components to address the issue of too late nights for the cleaning crew on weekdays.
