- A police comedy show about eccentric police officers. Veteran police detective Bob Ballard is reassigned to Pacific Station in Venice, California. The station is habitually used as an exile place for the police force's most eccentric or outright incompetent officers. They primarily have to deal with rather weird suspects from Venice Beach. Bob also has to deal with his new superior officer, the recently promoted Captain Ken Epstein. Ken is a rather immature young man who has been asked to lead officers than are older than himself.
- When recently-widowed Teresa Fanelli leaves Brooklyn for Florida, her adult sons move back in. Frankie is a ladies' man, Ronnie is failing in school, and Dom runs scams while Anthony runs the family business. Uncle Angelo is a priest.
- Anthony falls for Ronnie's girlfriend and Frank gets hit by a hockey puck.
- Uncle Angelo may forsake the Priesthood for music; the boys vie for a young woman's attention.
- Dom isn't happy with Frankie's weekend plans; Anthony's date becomes obsessed with him.
- Dom announces a plan to finance Ronnie's wedding but Theresa is not happy about the whole affair.
- Bob's son Leroy announces he wants to become a police officer and an attractive DEA agent has Al on his best behavior.
- It's time for Capparelli's psychological examination. The doctor passes Capparelli - but a certain colleague of his is found to be burnt out. Meanwhile, Burkhardt is hobnobbing with all the glitterati at the Lakers games.
- Robert Mandan guests as a TV star busted on admirals charge and Capparelli remembers Woodstock when the daughter he fathered there pats a visit.
- Veteran detective Bob Ballard meets his partner, just back from psychiatric leave, and his captain who is a political appointee and not nearly as qualified as Bob.
- Bob and Capparelli stop a guy from jumping off a building -- only for him to grab a gun and hold the entire station hostage.
