- Teenage Alan doesn't feel he's accomplishing much in life. As such, his teacher, Mr. Carson, believes he would benefit from developing some self-reliance. While Mr. Carson doesn't have a magic formula for Alan, he does have a few pointers, a four-item program of assuming responsibility, being informed, knowing where you're going, and making your own decisions. Mr. Carson and Alan discuss the first of the four with Mr. Carson getting him to be self-reliant to figure out what the other three mean. Alan will have put his thoughts into habitual behavior.

- The viewer is asked to think about the multitude of issues surrounding the broad question, "what is fair play?" when watching this film. Preteen Herb has just bought a chemistry set for himself. His younger adolescent brother Billy is enthralled with what Herb seems to be able to do in mixing chemicals in the test tubes. Billy wants to play with the chemistry set, but Herb won't let him, which Billy believes isn't fair. Herb and Billy usually have a good relationship in especially Herb sharing many of his belongings with his younger brother. This denial of Billy being able to play with the chemistry set sets in motion series of incidents between the brothers, again the questions asked with each subsequent action being what is considered fair especially in light of the results of those actions.

- The ideal classroom is still as a tomb according to this vintage Coronet Instructional short. First we see a mildly chaotic room of first graders who are then contrasted with Miss Bradley's little angels next door. Apparently opening their yaps wide only on the playground, they communicate sotto voce ("Whispering is the quiet way to talk when you have to talk!"), create only "work sounds" and even manage to move heavy wooden chairs around without making a peep. They're more productive and attentive that way, we're told, though seriously, there's something wrong with a class of six-year-olds so silent you can practically hear tumbleweeds rolling across their institutional tundra. - Dennis Harvey
- Through simple illustrations and examples, we learn about easy ways to make life with other people more tolerable.
