Oz Movies I've Seen
Something of a companion to my Live Action Fantasy list. I excluded "The Wizard of Oz" from that one, so this is to make up for that.

- DirectorJ. Farrell MacDonaldStarsViolet MacMillanFrank MoorePierre CoudercThe wicked king wants his daughter, Princess Gloria, to marry a horrid courtier though she loves the gardener's boy Pon. After encountering Dorothy, Pon and her team up to defeat the evil witch Mombi and to rescue the princess.aka "His Majesty, the Scarecrow of Oz." Renamed to try to cash in on the popularity of the first book.
- DirectorJ. Farrell MacDonaldStarsMildred HarrisViolet MacMillanFred WoodwardFairies weave a magic cloak that grants one wish. They give it to an unhappy girl who has just lost her father and been forced to move into town with her brother, who becomes king, and her donkey, who becomes a hero. The full original title was, "The Magic Cloak of Oz." It doesn't actually have anything to do with Oz apart from the titular object coming from Oz.
- DirectorLarry SemonStarsDorothy DwanCharles MurrayOliver HardyDorothy, heir to the Oz throne, must take it back from the wicked Prime Minister Kruel with the help of three farmhands.Recommended viewing only for the novelty of seeing Oliver Hardy in the Tin Man costume for a few minutes. Inspired the "farmhands becoming Oz characters" idea for the 1939 movie.
- DirectorTed EshbaughDorothy is swept in a twister from her boring Kansas farm to the wonderful land of Oz, where she makes some friends and is welcomed in the Emerald City. The first "Oz" production to have Kansas in black-and-white and Oz in color.
- DirectorVictor FlemingKing VidorStarsJudy GarlandFrank MorganRay BolgerYoung Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto are swept away by a tornado from their Kansas farm to the magical Land of Oz, and embark on a quest with three new friends to see the Wizard, who can return her to her home and fulfill the others' wishes.
- DirectorHal SutherlandStarsLiza MinnelliMilton BerleMargaret HamiltonDuring another twister, Dorothy is hit on the head by a gate and once again whisked away to the Land of Oz. But this time, on her way to the Emerald City, she discovers the witch Mombi's terrible plot to conquer Oz with an army of monster green elephants that's she's brewing up. She escapes with the help of Mombi's slave Pumpkinhead, and they try to warn King Scarecrow and her other friends that Mombi is coming, but she finds that they haven't quite changed as much as she thought. So it's up to her, Pumpkinhead, and the living carousel horse Woodenhead to find a way to stop Mombi's green elephants.
- DirectorChris LöfvénStarsJoy DunstanGraham MattersBruce SpenceDorothy is a 16-year-old groupie riding with an up-and-coming rock band when, suddenly, their van is in a road accident, and she hits her head. She wakes up in an alternate reality that's as gritty and realistic as the one she came from, and learns that she killed a young thug with the van. A gay clothier called the Glynn the Good Fairy gives her a pair of red shoes as a reward to help her see the last concert of the Wizard, an androgynous rock singer, in the city (Melbourne) that evening. She is pursed by the thug's brother who attempts to rape her on several occasions. During her journey, she becomes the traveling companion of a dumb surfer, a heartless mechanic, and a tough biker. My personal favorite "modernized" version of the story.
- DirectorSidney LumetStarsDiana RossMichael JacksonNipsey RussellAn adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz" that tries to capture the essence of the African-American experience.
- DirectorCharles SwensonFred WolfStarsSid CaesarMischa BondRobert RidgelyDorothy is carried back to Oz by a green turkey balloon on the final Thanksgiving she is to spend with her aunt and uncle, who are moving to a retirement community. She meets Jack Pumpkinhead, The Hungry Tiger, and Tik Tok, while stopping the evil Tyrone the Terrible Toy Tinker (looking suspiciously like John R. Neil's depiction of the Nome King), who brings the balloon to life to conquer the Emerald City and all of Oz.
- DirectorJohn Clark DonahueJohn DriverStarsWendy LehrChristopher PassiCarl BeckIn this extraordinarily faithful stage version of the second Oz book, the only major deletions were things unperformable on stage (The Jackdaw's nest and the Gryphon/Sawhorse chase) and an increase in the role of Jellia Jamb, who remains in the Emerald City in the novel. Tip is forced to live with a horrible witch Mombi, and decides one day to scare her with a Pumpkinhead man. Originally intending to smash it, she decides to test the powder of life she has obtained from Dr. Nikidik, which works. Forbidden to kill the boy, she plans to transform him into a marble statue the following morning. Taking the Pumpkinhead, Tip escapes during the night and meets General Jinjur and her all-woman army intent on conquering the Emerald City. Mombi agrees to help Jinjur, while Tip escapes the Emerald City with the Scarecrow to obtain the help of the Tin Woodman. Tip eventually learns the importance of his Emerald ring, and that he is the key to Restoration Oz.
