- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.what makes empire strikes back the greatest achievment in movie history is that it proves you can have your cake and eat it, you can have a spellbinding story and mix it in with plenty of exiting action, you can have the powerful drama of the godfather without it getting boring. i could literally watch empire everyday if i had to, and i cantsay that about many movies. it is beyond improvment
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsHarrison FordRutger HauerSean YoungA blade runner must pursue and terminate four replicants who stole a ship in space and have returned to Earth to find their creator.look at list of the best sci fis, and youll find blade runner somewhere at the top. if, like me, you only read a synopsis before watching it you were probably expecting some kind of action movie, however this film delivers much, much more. it is a dark tale that takes place in a stylised noir future, nothing like our world yet so relatable and has a striking message about humanity and what makes us human
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartKim NovakBarbara Bel GeddesA former San Francisco police detective juggles wrestling with his personal demons and becoming obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful woman he has been hired to trail, who may be deeply disturbed.the first time you watch vertigo you probably wont appreciate it, the plot is frankly riddles with holes and makes little sense, but none of that really matters. Because this is Hitchcock, the man who coined the term icebox moment, i.e meaning plot holes you dont notice until you go to your icebox to get some chicken after the movie. Hitchcock was all about suspense and this movie delivers that in droves, the script is spectacular and the leads bounce off each other in a display of some of the finest acting ever to grace the big screen
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroRay LiottaJoe PesciThe story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito. To suggest that there is any film better than the Godfather will get you shunned in most film appreciation circles. To suggest that it is not even the best gangster movie is surely something only a madman would say. But it isnt, Goodfellas is. Let me explain
The Godfather can only be truly appreciated the 2nd time around, ditto for its sequel. However neither have the rewatchability of Goodfellas, Goodfellas is excellet the first time and a masterpiece the second. Everything about this film screams perfection, and even though it follows a similar formula to many other gangster movies (Scarface in particular) i.e small time crook rises through the ranks of the mob in the 50s and becomes big time in the 80s before losing it all, you never get too caught up in the cliches. You allow you disbelief to be suspended and enjoy one of the greatest films ever - DirectorSergio LeoneStarsClint EastwoodEli WallachLee Van CleefA bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption. What is there to dislike about Pulp Fiction?
the cast is made up of te best of the best...Samuel Jackson, Tim Roth, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Bruce Willis, Tarantino himself and of course Travolta (who would lose every ounce of respect he earned for doing this film a few years later with Battlefield Earth).
This is perhaps thebest directed film ever, by the worlds most envisionary director-Quentin Tarantino, whose passion for the explicit and eccentric never fails to enrich an already hyper scene. The way this movie is editied is typical Tarantino, in different scenes out of order, the violence it is very over the top and treated casually by the excellent cast. This film is faultless, and if you havent seen it, you shouldnt be in imdb. - DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMartin SheenMarlon BrandoRobert DuvallA U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBrad PittEdward NortonMeat LoafAn insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.Fight Club was at the time, something new. A deeply powerful psychological thriller on the inside, and on the out, a very macho film about guys beating each other up. David Fincher is one of the greatest directors of our time and alongside Se7en, Fight Club will be remembered as his greatest work. Ironic, that no one gave him any hope of a career after the failure of Alien3.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanDon Vito Corleone, head of a mafia family, decides to hand over his empire to his youngest son, Michael. However, his decision unintentionally puts the lives of his loved ones in grave danger.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroRobert DuvallThe early life and career of Vito Corleone in 1920s New York City is portrayed, while his son, Michael, expands and tightens his grip on the family crime syndicate.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsMorgan FreemanBrad PittKevin SpaceyTwo detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his motives.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSigourney WeaverMichael BiehnCarrie HennDecades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.Aliens is my favourite film of all time (so im totally not biased) and for good reason, it was one of the defining films of the 80s and summed up everything that was great about that decade-the action, the humour, everything. Its pure James Cameron action before he went all titanic. the film itself was a sattirical take on Vietnam and Camerons political views are ever present-Femmenism, in the form of the mama bear character of Ripley not to mention the not so subtle digs at capitalism. The acting in this movie is superb, Ripleys transformation from scared woman to badass, Hudsons transformation from cocky headstrong grunt to paranoid whiny shell of man and Burke-from Ripleys friend to slimy corporate man. Aliens is a film I keep in my laptop CD thingy at all times, in case im ever bored or just feel like watching Aliens :) Aliens, despite being an action movie at heart, packs out the 2+ hours with suspense that would make Hitchcock proud and superb character drama. This 80s action flick truly deserves its place among the all time greats
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsRobert De NiroJodie FosterCybill ShepherdA mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsChristian BaleHeath LedgerAaron EckhartWhen the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice. The newest film on the list, Nolans batman blockbuster is certainly superior to the ridiculously overrated Inception. The Dark Knight combines spectacular action and breathtaking special effects with a terrific story. This film is a testament to Nolans directing abilities, to turn a campy comic book into one of the darkes thrillers of modern times.
- DirectorSergio LeoneStarsHenry FondaCharles BronsonClaudia CardinaleA mysterious stranger with a harmonica joins forces with a notorious desperado to protect a beautiful widow from a ruthless assassin working for the railroad.
- DirectorDavid LeanStarsPeter O'TooleAlec GuinnessAnthony QuinnThe story of T.E. Lawrence, the English officer who successfully united and led the diverse, often warring, Arab tribes during World War I in order to fight the Turks.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsHumphrey BogartIngrid BergmanPaul HenreidA cynical expatriate American cafe owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco.I never understood the hype around Citizen Kane, i found it dull, slow and boring. As a result, people often accuse me of being some Michael Bay fanboy, but that is untrue. I can appreciate a classic, evidenced by the fact that I love Casablanca. Casablanca is a beautifuly paced film, with fantastic dialogue that is spoken flawlessly by the cast, made up of some of Hollywoods legends. Casablanca, unlike most 'serious' films like Gone with the wind, shawshank, godfather etc is a film that can be enjoyed by everyone and not just snobby critics, a film that never gets old and a film that will hopefully still be watched for decades to come, and will still leave first time watchers breathless in another 70 years, andanother 70 after that
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.does it get any better than star wars? perhaps the most influential film of all time, and for good reason. the character development aboard the falcon are fantastically acted and very well scripted, but the best thing about this film is the assault on the death star, possibly the most exiting action sequnce in the history of cinema
- DirectorJames CameronStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerLinda HamiltonEdward FurlongA cyborg, identical to the one who failed to kill Sarah Connor, must now protect her ten year old son John from an even more advanced and powerful cyborg.i caught a glimpse of t2 once asachild, but my mum, aunty, grandma and uncle assured me it was cheesy crap
bastards.......
10 years later at 17 i saw the terminator, and was blown away. upon hearing t2 was supposedly better i instantly went out and bought it
t2 is perfectly, every scene, every frame, down to the smallest detail is a visual treat. the action is relentless and thrilling but it is within the characters that this film really comes into its own. one of the best scenes in the film is the quiet and heartwarming scenes in the desert between john and uncle bob
if you havent seen this, well then go see it - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLiam NeesonRalph FiennesBen KingsleyIn German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsAnthony PerkinsJanet LeighVera MilesA secretary on the run for embezzlement takes refuge at a secluded California motel owned by a repressed man and his overbearing mother.
- 19641h 35mPG8.3 (521K)97MetascoreDirectorStanley KubrickStarsPeter SellersGeorge C. ScottSterling HaydenAn unhinged American general orders a bombing attack on the Soviet Union, triggering a path to nuclear holocaust that a war room full of politicians and generals frantically tries to stop.Dr Strangelove is without a doubt, the funniest film of all time (yep, even funnier than Hot Fuzz). And it was directed by the greatest director of all time, Stanley Kubrick. The man who gave us 2001, Full Metal Jacket, The Shining and A Clockwork Orange. Peter Sellers steals the show, he plays 3 different parts. Frankly I wish he played every part
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMalcolm McDowellPatrick MageeMichael BatesAlex DeLarge and his droogs barbarize in a decaying near-future.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKaren AllenPaul FreemanIn 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.Raiders is the ultimate in action adventure, and created one of the most famous characters if all time-Indiana Jones. Every scene is iconic, from the often parodied temple scene, to the often parodied 'snake pit' scene, to the often parodied airfield scene and the often parodied ending...get my point?
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.
