- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsMichael B. JordanSylvester StalloneTessa ThompsonThe former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa serves as a trainer and mentor to Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed.8.7 (8.6)
My pick for Film of the Year. Some 'Rocky' fans may contest 'Creed' - at the end of the day it is 'Rocky', modernised for a new generation of inspiration. Some fans just need to get over the fact Sly can't have his face smacked around in the ring anymore... - DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsMatt DamonTommy Lee JonesAlicia VikanderThe CIA's most dangerous former operative is drawn out of hiding to uncover more explosive truths about his past.7.6 (8.0)
Maybe it would be fair to say this isn't the traditional Bourne film, so if that's all you would accept from this film then don't watch it. But if you like the quirky lines, love the Jason Bourne character and don't mind feeling vaguely like you've seen it all before - get it on. - DirectorZack SnyderStarsBen AffleckHenry CavillAmy AdamsBatman is manipulated by Lex Luthor to fear Superman. Superman´s existence is meanwhile dividing the world and he is framed for murder during an international crisis. The heroes clash and force the neutral Wonder Woman to reemerge.6.8 (7.7)
The most disappointing film of 2016. While it's not as bad as some critics say, I can understand their frustration as much of the movie feels jumbled together, lacking any sort of continuity or cohesion with its choppy editing. As for the story itself, although there were certainly moments of intrigue, the promised titular battle was a little lacking, and their coming together for the greater good seemed a little forced off the coincidence of their mother's name. 'Batfleck' was a little underwhelming in his first outing, more so as Bruce Wayne (which we saw far too much of) as his bulking take on Batman was actually pretty cool - particularly in that desert dream.
On the whole, having re-watched after ZSJL, I did enjoy the bleak world more than I did in 2016. Thus the tone is no longer its detracting factor - it's just a poorly made movie for what it could've been. - DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansRobert Downey Jr.Scarlett JohanssonPolitical involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.8.6 (8.2)
The Russo's find a perfect balance between our two heroes at war - presenting equally tantalising cases to support each sides outlook. With an emotional reveal which will rock you to your core, 'Civil War' produces a surprising take on a somewhat underwhelming comic. A candidate for film of the year. - DirectorDavid AyerStarsWill SmithJared LetoMargot RobbieA secret government agency recruits some of the most dangerous incarcerated super-villains to form a defensive task force. Their first mission: save the world from the apocalypse.6.0 (8.8)
Entertaining at points but an overt waste of potential; only really Will Smith and Margot Robbie excel in a cast capable of more. This film came in WAY below my expectations as my pick as film of the year. - DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace.8.4 (8.5)
Though this entry's villain wasn't as awesome as we'd hoped, the latest sequel to Star Wars met our expectations elsewhere. - DirectorNicholas StollerStarsSeth RogenRose ByrneZac EfronWhen their new next-door neighbors turn out to be a sorority even more debaucherous than the fraternity that lived there before, Mac and Kelly team with their former enemy, Teddy, to bring the girls down.7.9 (8.0)
Loved the first one...the second may have just topped it. - DirectorJustin LinStarsChris PineZachary QuintoKarl UrbanThe crew of the USS Enterprise explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy, who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.7.2 (7.7)
A bit too predictable and not really Star Trek. The film tried to go for that 'blockbuster' feel making it more like another film based in the Star Trek universe. The big disappointment is that the filmmakers should have realised that regardless of what type of film they put out; the name "Star Trek" automatically made this film a blockbuster and it didn't have to be tailor made as such. - DirectorBryan SingerStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1980s, the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive by bringing destruction to the world.6.6 (8.3)
Personally I had hoped for more - the absence of Wolverine (for the majority of the film) showed here. - DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsFelicity JonesDiego LunaAlan TudykIn a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.8.4 (8.2)
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.8.5 (7.9)
Ryan Reynolds delivers - realising the R-rated desires of comic fans everywhere. A new take on the traditional superhero film. Not for kids... - DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.8.2 (8.5)
- DirectorBabak NajafiStarsGerard ButlerAaron EckhartMorgan FreemanIn London for the Prime Minister's funeral, Mike Banning is caught up in a plot to assassinate all the attending world leaders.6.8 (7.0)
Yes it was predictable. Yes it was full of explosions. Yes it was critically panned as we've seen it all before. But yes I enjoyed it. - DirectorMorten TyldumStarsJennifer LawrenceChris PrattMichael SheenA malfunction in a sleeping pod on a spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet wakes one passenger 90 years early.7.1 (7.7)
What could have been a story of wonder and scientific exploration becomes one of love - its hard to definitely say that's a good thing, but its certainly an original thing. - DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.8.3 (7.9)
An excellent blend of moral teaching, dosed with a little sentiment and backstory to ensure we actually care about our characters by the end. - DirectorAndrew StantonAngus MacLaneStarsEllen DeGeneresAlbert BrooksEd O'NeillFriendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.7.7 (8.2)
Almost as good as the first, just lacked a little something to beat it. - DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsAmy AdamsJeremy RennerForest WhitakerA linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms after twelve mysterious spacecraft appear around the world.8.7 (8.2)
At once awe-inspiring, realistic and powerful. A totally different take on the generic 'alien invasion' genre, with a clever twist embedded throughout - in true Shutter Island style - you can't watch it the same way twice. - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsBrad PittMarion CotillardJared HarrisIn 1942, a Canadian intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war.(7.7)
- DirectorDavid YatesStarsAlexander SkarsgårdRory J SaperChristian StevensTarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the activities at a mining encampment.6.6 (8.0)
Good but not as good as I'd hoped. I think we really needed an A-list actor to take on Tarzan to immediately provide something to root for. - DirectorJon FavreauStarsNeel SethiBill MurrayBen KingsleyAfter a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo.7.0 (8.5)
Disappointing. Thought this one would've blown my mind but it felt rushed and turned out to be pretty average. - DirectorScott DerricksonStarsBenedict CumberbatchChiwetel EjioforRachel McAdamsWhile on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts.8.0 (7.7)
Awesome and absolutely mind-bending. Just as it was meant to be. - DirectorRoland EmmerichStarsLiam HemsworthJeff GoldblumBill PullmanTwo decades after the first Independence Day invasion, Earth is faced with a new extra-Solar threat. But will mankind's new space defenses be enough?7.1 (6.7)
Look this film did not set out to win Oscars or indeed expect sci-fi fans to be amazed with the story - it was made purely for entertainment purposes. And if you watch this film with that in mind - then you'll be wanting to hit rewind and watch it all again. - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsSamuel L. JacksonKurt RussellJennifer Jason LeighIn the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.(8.3)
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom HanksMark RylanceAlan AldaDuring the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.7.9 (8.0)
You just can't go wrong with a Tom Hanks film. A great look into a little known story, completing a trilogy of films brought out in time for the 2016 Oscars, based on real events. - DirectorTom McCarthyStarsMark RuffaloMichael KeatonRachel McAdamsThe true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.8.0 (8.1)
Exactly what I hoped it would be. Thriller look into a story I wasn't familiar with...but am now so glad that I am.
