Venezia 76 - The Films In Competition at the 76th Edition of the Venice Film Festival
Venice's 76th films are an eclectic bunch. First and foremost we have a movie based on a comic book character In Competition. That says a lot about the potential greatness of Joker, the collaboration of DC, the guy who directed The Hangover (which holds up incredibly well), and the absolute nut who is one of our greatest living actors. Venice also offers us new films from Soderbergh and Baumbach, two iconoclasts who aren't making films for wide audiences but it sure would be nice if they tucked another hit into their belts. While the In Competition selections are the most discussed and the ones up for the prizes the Out of Competition - Fiction, Non-Fiction and Special Screenings are outstanding, while the Orizzonti category is dedicated to new voices and visions. The Venice Classics revel in restorations and the Classics Docs discuss films and filmmakers of the past. One of the surprising discoveries I've made at Venice is their stellar VR Experience, which has increased in size and scope and converted me utterly to the format. - by Keith Simanton, Senior Film Editor
