- DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsTom HanksBarkhad AbdiBarkhad AbdirahmanThe true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. It's a brilliant action movie. Tom Hanks is exceptional but i would also like to see muse Abdi's performance (or Muse if you prefer) recognized. It's the kind of movie I'd recommend to anyone and I guess I'd put it above last year's Argo and this year's Gravity [8.6].
Though the best movie I've seen this year is The Hunt - DirectorAlfonso CuarónStarsSandra BullockGeorge ClooneyEd HarrisDr Ryan Stone, an engineer on her first time on a space mission, and Matt Kowalski, an astronaut on his final expedition, have to survive in space after they are hit by debris while spacewalking.Gravity is excellent! I was incredibly involved with the story and the characters and I'd be surprised if it does not win a bunch of Oscars. And I mean so involved that during a fire scene I started sweating! However, (and in direct comparison to Cap.Phillips) it's a movie that only works well in the theaters. I guess if had seen it alone at home, I'd be a bit disappointed and would not get the hype it is receiving - 3D really makes the difference and that said, I'll probably not see it again. BTW, after watching Gravity you should also check Aningaaq (a 7 minute short directly related to the movie) [8.6]
- DirectorJ.C. ChandorStarsRobert RedfordAfter a collision with a shipping container at sea, a resourceful sailor finds himself, despite all efforts to the contrary, staring his mortality in the face.Without some scenes in the middle of the film that made my mind drift away for some moments, I would say it was the best of the year. The soundtrack makes it even more powerful and I wish I had seen it at the theaters [8.6]
- DirectorDestin Daniel CrettonStarsBrie LarsonFrantz TurnerJohn Gallagher Jr.A 20-something supervising staff member of a residential treatment facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend.Few movies make you care so much about the characters. Brie Larson is one of the rising stars of the year and I hope this film's director rumor about a next movie with Jennifer Lawrence become real. [8.5]
- DirectorSpike JonzeStarsJoaquin PhoenixAmy AdamsScarlett JohanssonIn a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system designed to meet his every need.Spike Jonze, whose movie I like the most is the funny and inventive Being John Malkovich, strikes again with something lovely, charming, creative and I just want to tell you that you should see it ASAP. [8.5]
- DirectorRon HowardStarsDaniel BrühlChris HemsworthOlivia WildeThe merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.F1 was part my childhood and it surely helps me to like it. But this is not a movie about F1, it's about two people, one rivalry and it's one movie you should not miss even if you think F1 is about a bunch of crazy people driving in a track [8.3]
- DirectorSteve McQueenStarsChiwetel EjioforMichael Kenneth WilliamsMichael FassbenderIn the antebellum United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. While last year's Django provided a fun time, 12 years a slave is a strong and heavy movie with scenes that will remain in your memory. Chiwetel Ejiofor is also a strong contender for an Oscar [8.3]
- DirectorGiuseppe TornatoreStarsGeoffrey RushJim SturgessSylvia HoeksVirgil Oldman, a wealthy art auctioneer, takes the help of a young artificer, Robert, to understand and woo Claire Ibbetson, a young heiress, who hires him to auction off an antique collection.I'm surprised to have not heard about it in the press. It's a very good movie which a lot of people has not heard about yet. Its mystery is good and the resolution is incredible [8.1]
- DirectorMartin ScorseseStarsLeonardo DiCaprioJonah HillMargot RobbieBased on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stock-broker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government.180 minutes worth your time, to make you laugh, want Di Caprio to win the oscar with this performance and it deserves the nomination for best movie. I'm now waiting to watch the 240(?) minute dvd version [8.0]
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia. It's movie with big stars, big songs/soundtrack, a smart story and we just wanted some more to remember, something that sticks to your brain [8.0]
- DirectorZaza UrushadzeStarsLembit UlfsakElmo NüganenGiorgi NakashidzeIn 1992, war rages in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia. An Estonian man, Ivo, has decided to stay behind and harvest his crops of tangerines. In a bloody conflict at his door, a wounded man is left behind, and Ivo takes him in.A short movie, simple story to remind you of realities we forget and a it's always refreshing to drift away from the Hollywood movies when you have options like tangerines[7.9]
- DirectorLouis LeterrierStarsJesse EisenbergCommonMark RuffaloAn FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money. Now You See Me was a surprise hit. Why was it surprising I don't know. In Portugal it still holds the 10th place in yearly box office, and I'd say that a magnificent trailer shown before the BO's nº2 Fast and Furious 6 is one of the reasons for its success. At least that's where it really got my attention. The movie is good and well-paced and even with some not-so-good details it's the kind of movie I'd see again [7.9]
- DirectorChris BuckJennifer LeeStarsKristen BellIdina MenzelJonathan GroffFearless optimist Anna teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff and his loyal reindeer Sven in an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. In a year without outstanding animated pictures (I have not seen Wind Rises yet and Ernest and Celestine counts as of 2012), frozen, with occasional superb details and good humor looks very, very good and will probably be the Oscar winner[7.8]
- DirectorPaolo SorrentinoStarsToni ServilloCarlo VerdoneSabrina FerilliJep Gambardella has seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades, but after his 65th birthday and a shock from the past, Jep looks past the nightclubs and parties to find a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty. It's the kind of movie I would want to see again in 10 years, because I know I will see it from a different perspective. It's worth An Oscar nomination for best foreign film [7.8]
- DirectorJoseph Gordon-LevittStarsJoseph Gordon-LevittScarlett JohanssonJulianne MooreA New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love. It's funny and it's my favorite comedy of the year [7.8]
- DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHugh JackmanJake GyllenhaalViola DavisWhen Keller Dover's daughter and her friend go missing, he takes matters into his own hands as the police pursue multiple leads and the pressure mounts.Prisioners is a very good movie, well made from beginning to the last second. Yet, it's almost depressive in a displeasing way. [7.8]
- DirectorJean-Marc ValléeStarsMatthew McConaugheyJennifer GarnerJared LetoIn 1985 Dallas, electrician and hustler Ron Woodroof works around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need after he is diagnosed with the disease. The topic of 93's Philadelphia gets expanded to the pharmaceutical lobbies and we have a movie that is not that as harsh as I thought it could be. As a curiosity, in the end I checked the age restrictions and Netherlands has it only M12 and I guess it's okay and rating it higher may be debatable, and movies that generate debate are good, most of the time [7.7]
- DirectorJohn Lee HancockStarsEmma ThompsonTom HanksAnnie Rose BuckleyP. L. Travers, a London author who is financially broke, visits Los Angeles to meet Walt Disney, who is keen to adapt her 'Mary Poppins' for the cinema. However, his methods do not meet her approval.Though I was not too excited through the first half, it was always engaging and it succeeds, in the end [7.7]
- DirectorRyan CooglerStarsMichael B. JordanMelonie DiazOctavia SpencerThe story of Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old Bay Area resident, who crosses paths with friends, enemies, family, and strangers on the last day of 2008.It's so simple and engaging [7.7]
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsChris PineZachary QuintoZoe SaldanaAfter the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.Yep, it's a good one. I'd put above the previous one and I'm still listening to London Calling after some months [7.7]
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsRooney MaraChanning TatumJude LawA young woman's world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.Side Effects is that kind of a good movie that lacks something that would make it a huge success. At half of the movie I was a bit disappointed and disconnected. But then it got interesting and enjoyable, and you won't regret the time spent. It has strong criticism.
Btw, it's also curious to see Rooney Mara in such a different role after being L. Salander. [7.6] - DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseMorgan FreemanAndrea RiseboroughA veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.I'm not a fan o T.Cruise but i'm a fan of M83, who provided a soundtrack I listened a lot before watching the movie and after watching the movie. It's not the most brilliant sci-film you've seen, some elements are actually unoriginal, and Moon is a better recent movie to watch. Yet, I shall say I liked it and well... Olga Kurylenko never looked so hot. [7.6]
- DirectorJon S. BairdStarsJames McAvoyJamie BellEddie MarsanA corrupt, junkie cop with bipolar disorder attempts to manipulate his way through a promotion in order to win back his wife and daughter while also fighting his own inner demons. This is I a movie I knew existed because of Clint Mansell, whose work I really like and watched filth not knowing anything else about the movie. The soundtrack naturally pleases me with some surprisingly good covers and score I expected at high quality level. The movie itself is good, sometimes tricky - I've checked the plot after watching it to ensure myself i got all the details, and I've missed one or two - and it was not a surprise when I realized that it was based in a novel written by the guy who wrote trainspotting, there's something in filth that makes you connect the dots. So if you like trainspotting and black comedies, this movie is for you.[7.6]
- DirectorAlexander PayneStarsBruce DernWill ForteJune SquibbAn aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize. This lady called June Quibb who I never heard about before truly deserves the oscar nomination and so does Bruce Dern. The movie is as satisfying as the last movie from Payne - it's good enough to get a nomination, but not good enough to have any winning aspirations.
- DirectorMarc ForsterStarsBrad PittMireille EnosDaniella KerteszFormer United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself. When I saw the trailer I thought it would be a movie I'd love to hate. One I'd say it really sucked, the way I do about last year's Prometheus. However this bloodless zombie movie was actually good. I mean, it's not as good as 28 days later, to mention another zombie movie, but I was really surprised with it [7.5]
