Foreign Language Film Submissions to the 88th Academy Awards held in 2016 to get an Oscar Nomination in the Best Non-English Movie Category
81 COUNTRIES IN COMPETITION FOR 2015 FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OSCAR!
Since 1956 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents annually an Academy Award (widely known as Oscar) to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Lots of film industries of various independent states and autonomous regions were invited to submit the best film of the year from their country. The submitted films of the year 2015 selection process had to be first released theatrically in their home countries between 1 October 2014 and 30 September 2015. The deadline for the submissions was 1 October 2015. At 9 October 2015 the Academy announced a list of eligible films from 81 countries.
83 male and 15 female directors are responsible for the realization of the submitted foreign language films in 2015. This high number is due to the fact that two anthology films was submitted by seven directors alike and five director duos are also recorded. Among the Submissions there are in total 3 documentaries of which is one animated in part. The south american country Paraguay has submitted a film for the first time in the 59-year history of this award category.
China's submission was for a long time the film Wolf Totem directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, but was withdrawn at the last minute before the deadline and replaced by another film.
Panama had reportedly submitted the documentary Box 25 directed by Mercedes Arias and Delfina Vidal, but the film was not on the final list.
After the annually shortlisting of nine finalist films from the list below in late-December four weeks thereafter the final five nominees were announced at 14 January 2016. The Oscars Ceremony with the winner announcement was held on Sunday, Februar 28, 2016.
