A gore-fuelled masterpiece of superhero television equipped with a diabolical story, real stakes and an all-star cast.
Season 1: ★★★★★
Best Episode: "Where I Really Come From" (S1, E8) - DirectorRobert ValleyJeff AllenStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsWhen Mark Grayson finally inherits powers from his superhero father, it's a dream come true. But there's more to being a hero than just choosing a name and costume.9.1
A very enticing opener that sets the table with a shockingly, phenomenally bloody end. As someone who hasn't read the comics, I had no idea what to expect - it's got me hooked now. - DirectorPaul FurmingerJeff AllenStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsWith his father out of action, Mark struggles to defend the city against an interdimensional invasion, joining forces with a team of teenage superheroes.8.7
The storyboarding feels a little messy at times, but you can't deny the intrigue that builds with every new world rule or character introduction. It's pretty awesome so far. - DirectorJeff AllenStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsMark has to cut a study date short to help save Mount Rushmore from a crazed scientist. Robot deals with Action - Comic as he assembles a new team of world-saving superheroes.8.7
This show is badass. Opening up the difficulties of being a superhero with regular human relationships, it's continuing to hit all the right notes. I'm excited to see where it's going. - DirectorJeff AllenCory EvansStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsIt's two firsts for Mark: a first date and a first trip to another planet. At the same time, Nolan and Debbie revisit their own first vacation together.8.5
A slower episode, but one that could have potentially huge implications for the seasons endgame (oh, and reminding us that we shouldn't trust any of our supposed heroes on this show). - DirectorJeff AllenJay BakerStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsFeeling confident in his new abilities, Mark risks a team-up with a local villain to take down a crime lord, while simultaneously juggling school and a new relationship.9.4
Almost as shocking as the opening episode - this show keeps elevating the bar of your expectations. While the whole weighing up the responsibilities of regular life as a superhero is reasonably well-tread ground, this episode excels is in its conveyance of Mark's ever-increasing confidence - confidence that has set him up with an AWESOME new adversary (who comes complete with-a-heart), and leaves us, the viewer, on a knife edge cliff-hanger till next week. I can't sing its praises enough. - DirectorPaul FurmingerJae HarmJeff AllenStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsMark joins William and Amber on a campus visit to Upstate University, hoping to discover a new future for himself. Debbie makes her own disturbing discovery.8.5
A little underwhelming after last week's massacre, particularly in how quickly they moved on from Mark's decimation - I know he's Invincible but he didn't look it at the end of last weeks ep! The best part of this episode is Eve's new direction - its refreshing to see a superhero who isn't all about saving the world in a traditional sense but wants to help in a more down to earth manner. This weeks ep is another vital building block in the overall arc of the story, if a little misplaced. - DirectorVinton HeuckJeff AllenStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsFeeling lost and confused, Mark looks for advice from Eve. At the same time, everyone's looking for him.9.6
A gore-fest of absolutely stupendous quality - upping the bar for animation while staying true to its comic book counterpart. Everything about this episode was bloody violent - dealing with the personal impact of superheroic acts and ripping apart the rule book on what you expect of Nolan (even at this stage), while concurrently teasing out the why behind it all. The smoking bullet, cliff-hanger of an ending has me conflicted for next weeks finale - as much as I can't wait for the big reveal (in what feels like a GoT like scenario) - I don't want it to end!! - DirectorWilliam RuzickaJeff AllenStarsSteven YeunSandra OhJ.K. SimmonsMark must prove he's become the hero he's always wanted to be by stopping an unstoppable force.9.7
A bloody massacre of superhero TV that will shock you into submission to the realities of its reveals. It doesn't hold back - doing everything you dread that it will, giving you hope and tearing it away; relentlessly displaying the truth of what a super-powered society would cost if it went bad.
By positioning Nolan's species as the enemy, with some fantastic justification (c'mon just imagine this from Omni-Man's point-of-view), it recontextualises the entire direction this show will take - marking a fantastic debut season with the most satisfying of twists. It's phenomenal.
