- DirectorRobert EggersStarsAlexander SkarsgårdNicole KidmanClaes BangA young Viking prince is on a quest to avenge his father's murder.10/10: Everything about it is great. Technically, the cinematography, editing, etc. is superb, and the same can be said for the acting, writing, etc.
- DirectorTodd FieldStarsCate BlanchettNoémie MerlantNina HossSet in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra.9/10: There were a few instances where story beats felt like they lacked a conclusion or explanation, but that's the only major negative. The screenplay and character is well written, and Cate Blanchett is fantastic, it's engaging from the start, the pacing is wonderful, and everything that occurs and gets said feels completely organic.
- DirectorDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsMichelle YeohStephanie HsuJamie Lee CurtisA middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led.9/10: It balances so much (action, character drama, sci-fi concept, etc.) and does it better than so many films that are just dedicated to one of these things. The acting, cinematography, and choreography are all top-notch. The action becomes a bit dull about half-way through, but that's when the film turns from the action to other avenues, so it's not a big deal. The script is probably the weakest thing about the movie, with some predictable and cliche dialogue and over-explanation of things that could have been delivered to the audience via osmosis of witnessing what's happening.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsMichelle WilliamsGabriel LaBellePaul DanoGrowing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.9/10: It has a strong sense of identity, expertly juxtaposing the whimsy of the fictitious filmmaking with the brutal reality that comes with it. The characters are well-written and memorable, the acting is strong, the music fit perfectly, and there are some extremely well written scenes. The writing is easily the weakest link, though, sometimes being a little too much and coming off as cheesy or groan-worthy.
- DirectorDan TrachtenbergStarsAmber MidthunderDakota BeaversDane DiLiegroNaru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation, fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.8/10: With the character and story, it gives the Predator franchise a fresh new look, which is aided by the special effects, action, and set pieces. The dialogue is a bit blunt and weak, and it loses some momentum when the French fur traders show up, but it's an overall strong, well-acted, and entertaining addition to the Predator franchise and horror-action genre.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaKeke PalmerBrandon PereaThe residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.8/10: Like Jordan Peele's other movies, it's very interesting and has some great ideas, but it's a bit messy. The characters and writing were strong, and the performances were fantastic, especially Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigEdward NortonKate HudsonTech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case.8/10: Story and script-wise, it's weaker than the original, but it's still filled with some great dialogue and a fun story. Craig and the rest of the cast is wonderful and entertaining, the mystery is intriguing and handles the elements of the genre well, and the comedy is genuinely funny.
- DirectorTom GormicanStarsNicolas CagePedro PascalTiffany HaddishMoviestar Nick Cage is channeling his iconic characters as he's caught between a superfan and a CIA agent.8/10: As a sort-of comeback film for Nicholas Cage, it hits all the right marks. The satirization and self-awareness don't feel overdone for the most part, the performances and writing are strong, and the comedy is hysterical. The biggest issues arise when the action set-pieces come into play, which is when it feels overly generic, boring, and unfit for what the movie is.
- DirectorMatt ReevesStarsRobert PattinsonZoë KravitzJeffrey WrightWhen a sadistic serial killer begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, The Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement.7/10: With underdeveloped characters and the occasional groan-worthy dialogue, The Batman's strengths lie with the performances; technical aspects like lighting, cinematography, set-design, costumes, etc.; and it's idea and handling which feels noir and unique for a Batman movie.
- DirectorDavid CronenbergStarsViggo MortensenLéa SeydouxKristen StewartHumans adapt to a synthetic environment, with new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice, Saul Tenser, celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances.7/10: It's a visual treat with some strong performances, great ideas, and an interesting story. The biggest downside to it is the scenes of exposition, which are overlong and used on multiple occasions to explain the universe instead of just letting it come out organically.
- DirectorMark MylodStarsRalph FiennesAnya Taylor-JoyNicholas HoultA young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.7/10: It has a strong script, perfect tone, and impeccable performances (especially from Taylor-Joy, Fiennes, and Hoult), though it deters a bit with its flat main character and the twist and turns will have a lesser impact on a second viewing.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsSam WorthingtonZoe SaldanaSigourney WeaverJake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their home.7/10: Compared to the first movie, it's strong on a narrative, character, and visual level. The aesthetics are incredible and believable, there are some interesting character dynamics, and the story isn't as cliche. That being said, the story is fairly thin, and the movie juggles a bunch of characters and doesn't always succeed with it. Along with that, the writing for the human characters s fairly one-note and generic, over-the-tope military stereotyping.
- DirectorOlivia WildeStarsFlorence PughHarry StylesChris PineWhile her husband leaves home everyday to work in a top secret facility, a young 1950s housewife begins to question her life when she notices strange behavior from the other wives in the neighborhood.7/10: While it suffers a bit from obvious dialogue that over-explains things and try-hard horror elements, the movie excels with its performances, themes, and cinematography, it's well paced, the twists and reveals work, and it doesn't feel its 2.5 hour run time.
- DirectorSkye WallinStarsMike GravelHenry WilliamsDavid OksA decade since his last campaign, 89-year-old former senator and 2008 presidential candidate Mike Gravel comes out of retirement when a group of teenagers convinces him to run for president one last time.7/10: The documentary does a good job of balancing the two key parts to making this documentary work, who Mike Gravel was and what his unorthodox campaign was like, but other than that it's a bit lacking. There isn't much in regard to Gravel's opinion when it comes to the campaign, and it feels a bit too heavily-focused on the Internet memes that transpired than the campaign itself at times. Honestly, a documentary solely about Gravel would probably have been better.
- DirectorMatt Bettinelli-OlpinTyler GillettStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid Arquette25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Calif., a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past.7/10: While weaker in writing and in characters than the other installments, it wraps up the stories for Sidney, Gale, and Dewey well and fully understands their characters, it has some good meta-moments and works with how the film industry is now with remakes, reboots, sequel/remakes. As a fan of the Scream franchise, it was what I was hoping for.
- DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseJennifer ConnellyMiles TellerAfter thirty years, Maverick is still pushing the envelope as a top naval aviator, but must confront ghosts of his past when he leads TOP GUN's elite graduates on a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.6/10: It's a well-made action movie with fantastic visuals, tense action set-pieces, and strong performances. The story beats are very similar to that of the original Top Gun, and the writing is fairly generic with some groan-worthy dialogue sprinkled in here and there. The audio is also wonky, as the music can be incredibly overbearing, the actors lines too quiet, etc.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBenedict CumberbatchElizabeth OlsenChiwetel EjioforDoctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl who can travel across multiverses, to battle other-universe versions of himself which threaten to wipe out the multiverse. They seek help from the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others.6/10: It has a lot of the writing issues of a Marvel movie, and it feels like there are multiple products missing (another Dr. Strange movie and another movie or show with Wanda), but it's also fairly enjoyable and well made, courtesy of Sam Raimi's directing style.
- DirectorKyle BaldaBrad AblesonJonathan del ValStarsSteve CarellPierre CoffinAlan ArkinThe untold story of one twelve-year-old's dream to become the world's greatest supervillain.6/10: Much better than it has any right to be. While the minion antics are the weakest part of the film, the comedy is much better than it has been in other Minions-based properties. The storyline was a bit weak, but it flowed well and had a lot of fun moments.
- DirectorJohn Patton FordStarsAubrey PlazaTheo RossiBernardo BadilloDown on her luck and saddled with debt, Emily gets involved in a credit card scam that pulls her into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, ultimately leading to deadly consequences.6/10: The actors all do a good job, and the film handles some tense moments quite nicely, but not much else stands out about it.
- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonKerry CondonTwo lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.6/10: Beautiful cinematography and some great performances, but its weak story and premise feels underdeveloped and artificial.
- DirectorJeff TremaineStarsJohnny KnoxvilleSteve-OChris PontiusThrough outrageous, never-before-seen footage, witness the making of the Jackass crew's last go at wild stunts.6/10: It has some fun behind the scenes content and provides some interesting documentation of what happened, but it's ultimately a movie about the pranks, which it's clear why some of them got cut from the final product (not bad, just not the most interesting or funny).
- DirectorRoar UthaugStarsIne Marie WilmannKim FalckMads Sjøgård PettersenDeep in the Dovre mountain, something gigantic wakes up after a thousand years in captivity. The creature destroys everything in its path and quickly approaches Oslo.6/10: It's exactly what is to be expected with a film with this premise. The dialogue and characters are nothing special, but they serve their purposes, and the effects and sets are good.
- DirectorBaltasar KormákurStarsLiyabuya GongoMartin MunroDaniel HadebeA father and his two teenage daughters find themselves hunted by a massive rogue lion intent on proving that the Savanna has but one apex predator.5/10: It has some good character moments, which are elevated by Elba's performance, good effects, and some fun and tense moments, but it's a fairly typical story line with spelled-out themes and a weak ending.
- DirectorCharlie McDowellStarsJason SegelLily CollinsJesse PlemonsA man breaks into a tech billionaire's empty vacation home, but things go sideways when the arrogant mogul and his wife arrive for a last-minute getaway.5/10: It's a fairly generic execution of the premise without much to set it apart visually or technically, but the acting is strong.
- DirectorDomee ShiStarsRosalie ChiangSandra OhAva MorseA thirteen-year-old girl named Mei Lee is torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the changes of adolescence. And as if the challenges were not enough, whenever she gets overly excited she transforms into a giant red panda.5/10: It's a pretty standard film with nothing note-worthy to elevate it, but unlike a lot of more recent Pixar movies, it at least feels more genuine and like it was a story someone thought of and really wanted to tell as opposed to something super formulaic to make money.
