The best art films of every year (1894—2023) for cinephiles
A list of the films that have most impressed me as a cinephile with their artistic ambition and originality, depth and strength of ideas, and technical and aesthetic innovation. It is not necessarily a list of my favourite films, but more a celebration of the most important works in the history of film as an instrument for art and poetry. There is one film for every year (as per the UK IMDb site) starting from 1894: the year of the very first intentional art film, which came just a few years after the invention of the first moving picture camera itself (1888).
For a list of my ‘favourite’ works of all types, as opposed to the films I think are the ‘best’ and most important, see my list 'Mitch Hickman's Top 250' or any of my yearly top 5 lists.
Honourable mentions: lost world Mitchell kenyon, a free ride 1915, roundhay garden scene
