July 2024 is going to be a bustling month on Netflix, with over 50 movies scheduled to hit the streamer's library in the United States. As ever when it comes to Netflix, the incoming titles will generally skew mainstream and recent, but they still cover a wide array of genres and countries -- and sci-fi fans will find plenty of good stuff to dig into in that new batch.
The selection of science fiction titles coming to Netflix this July (not counting new originals) will include seven total movies, with six of those movies hailing from two enormously popular trilogies that are set to be made available in full on the service. The seventh one, meanwhile, is a sequel to a popular animated film that Netflix currently doesn't have. But as frustrating as that impracticality is always wont to be, the sequel in question is fun and self-contained enough to be enjoyed on its own.

Kentaro Miura, the creator of Berserk, has talked about the major influences in his life and works multiple times. After all, who wouldn’t be curious about the mind of such a popular mangaka? As it turns out, it’s not just the author’s manga that is unique, it is also his inspiration.
In an interview, the author openly admitted he loved two Hollywood directors but lost interest in another one. So why are these fated/ill-fated directors? You would be surprised by their popularity.
Why James Cameron Stopped Inspiring Kentaro Miura

In an interview, Kentaro Miura admitted that while he was still a fan of directors like Tim Burton and Sam Raimi, he was no longer too fond of James Cameron. Cameron, the legendary director of Titanic, Avatar, The Terminator, and plenty of other iconic movies, can no longer hold the interest of Miura.

Not every person lives boldly enough to achieve their dreams. Those who do, wish their dreams were powerful enough to move the world. Alfred Molina was gifted with both — the opportunity to not only pursue what he loved but also immortalize his work in cinematic history. Unfortunately, even for a celebrated icon of his caliber, Molina still missed out on the third and most tragic wish of all — the chance to make his parents proud.

In 2002, director Sam Raimi gave one of Marvel’s iconic superheroes a face through the casting of Tobey Maguire as the first live-action Spider-Man. Maguire’s innocent charm and endearing personality fit the bill perfectly with regard to the image of the character made famous by Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko.

Together, Raimi and Maguire collaborated on a successful trilogy that saw slick action sequences between Spider-Man and his various nemesis. One of the key fights in the first film was the superhero’s confrontation with Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin in a burning building. Fans to their surprise, have now found out that it was not Maguire or a stunt double, but CGI effects that were used to create Spider-Man for the scene.

Oscar-nominated writer/director Adam McKay almost brought “The Boys” to the big screen.
During an interview with Rolling Stone, “The Boys” comic book co-creator Darick Robertson revealed that McKay tried to adapt the series into a film trilogy. McKay even wrote a finished screenplay and oversaw “demo animatics of scenes” according to Rolling Stone, but the film was never made.
“The Boys” later became a Prime Video series.
“I wouldn’t change how it worked out, because the show is amazing,” Robertson said. “But he was doing really cool stuff. It just came down to it being 2008, not 2018. I just don’t think they were ready for it yet.”
“The Boys” TV show is produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, both of whom also tried to adapt the comic books earlier.

This is a very exciting time for action cinema. Movies like "John Wick" have brought a new appreciation in American cinema for meticulous choreography and cartoon physics that make each set piece larger and wilder than the ones that came before them. Indie filmmakers like Adil & Bilall are similarly playing in the big studio space, while there's now unprecedented access to action movies from around the world, with filmmakers from countries like Indonesia leaving their mark on the genre. Indonesia, in particular, has seen some of the best action movies of the past decade, and it also gave us perhaps the most exciting voice in the genre working today — Timo Tjahjanto.
To quote our own Bj Colangelo, Tjahjanto "has never made a movie that didn't, at minimum, totally rip," whether it's his short films in "V/H/S/2" and "The ABCs of Death," his Sam Raimi-inspired movie "May the Devil Take You,...

The legendary George Lucas’ media franchise, Star Wars, might be the third-highest-grossing film franchise of all time, but to reach that level, the franchise had to bear a lot of criticism. Some of this criticism even came from one of the biggest mangakas, Kentaro Miura, who wrote the Berserk manga, which is an epic tale in itself.
Berserk Manga By Kentaro Miura | Studio Gaga
Miura was a big fan of Western movies and series. Even his magnum opus shared some similarities to many cult classics of his time, like The Evil Dead. He once revealed his favorite movies, directors, actors, franchises, etc. And while talking about his favorites, he mentioned that he was a big Star Wars fan.
However, there was one Star Wars movie that Miura believed was very weak, and maybe Lucas jumped the shark on it. The movie was the prequel to Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,...

The quirks and quiddities of Marvel films are such that you either fall in love with them or feel mortified to even call yourself a fan, there’s no in-between. The same thing unfolded when Doctor Strange 2 premiered in 2022, polarizing the fandom in its wake. While some seemed to be pleased with the sequel, others were infuriated with the lack of depth in the plot and characters.

Meanwhile, there’s a third separate group comprising fans who are solely preoccupied with Sam Raimi’s exemplary craft; they are least bothered by whether the film fared well or not, they just want to see the acclaimed director shepherd more MCU films.

Keanu Reeves owes a lot to The Matrix, a film series that is one of the few Hollywood classics that are still referenced in world media. While the latest addition to the film franchise was not very well received, Reeves has made his intentions clear about coming back for a fifth film, and there is just one condition the Youngblood-alum has when it comes to his return to the franchise.

A restless spirit with a roving imagination, Belgian filmmaker Michiel Blanchart, developed his feature debut “Night Call” while ever on the move.
“I go crazy when sitting behind a desk,” he tells Variety at the Nouvelles Vagues Festival in Biarritz, France, where the movie had its world premiere this week. “I can’t just get up from the couch and open my computer, because nothing would come out. Instead I followed a routine, walking across Brussels for an hour or two each day, heading from my home to the production office waiting for inspiration to strike — and if it didn’t, I’d turn around and walk for another hour or two. In the end, 80% of the film’s locations derived from that route.”
Blanchart, who will next adapt his award-winning short “You’re Dead Helene” into an English-language feature produced by Sam Raimi and TriStar Pictures, approached his inaugural feature from the outside in.

If you are a dark fantasy fan, you would be no stranger to Berserk, Kentaro Miura’s lifetime work. The manga is a pioneer in its genre and fans hold it up to a pedestal. Miura conceived Berserk when he was in college. As usual, the creation was influenced by a number of elements, and Miura’s favorite creator was one of them.
You might know Sam Raimi from Evil Dead and the Spider Man trilogy, but did you know his creations inspired Miura in his journey as a mangaka? Infact, the mangaka was shocked once he realized the similarities between Evil Dead and Berserk. Was it a conscious decision? Or did Miura get a subconscious inspiration?

Benedict Cumberbatch first played the Sorcerer Supreme in 2016's Doctor Strange and almost immediately made his presence felt in the wider MCU.
It started with a cameo in Thor: Ragnarok before the hero showed up as a key player in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. From there, Strange - who was replaced by Wong as Sorcerer Supreme during the Blip - took centre stage in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The Sam Raimi-helmed sequel featured a multitude of Strange Variants, as has Disney+'s What If...? However, it was in the movie's closing moments that the hero met Dormammu's daughter Clea and was enlisted to help stop an Incursion he'd supposedly caused.
We haven't seen Strange since, but in a new interview looking back at his career, Cumberbatch confirmed he'll shoot a new Avengers movie in 2025.
"This is Doctor Strange," the British actor started.

Even the best superhero is nothing without a great villain. Unfortunately, we often see bad guys underserved in the movies they appear in, an issue that's plagued the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the start.
Regardless of whether they steal the spotlight from the hero the movie is named after or are forgotten before the credits even roll, many a supervillain's appearance has been redesigned during the transition from page to screen.

Phase 3 of the MCU was a time when Marvel Studios was at its peak, releasing a slew of entertaining films with a unique, yet connected feel. While there was much oversight from the studio, directors had some very interesting visuals put on display, such as 2016’s Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson.

Derrickson’s direction with the first Doctor Strange movie came at the end of a long courtship with Disney, where the director revealed that he had to shell out a lot of his own money for a 90-minute presentation. Scott Dirrickson would, however, exit the franchise come Doctor Strange 2, with the gig going to Spider-Man alum, Sam Raimi. However, Derrickson revealed details about his presentation for the original Doctor Strange gig, it has become clear that the director is the right choice for Doctor Strange 3 after all.

Twenty years ago, Spider-Man 2 boiled down the basic appeal of the Web-Head in movie form. Peter Parker is the guy for whom wearing a mask and fighting crime is a noble duty, sure, but it’s also sometimes just a job—one complete with busy work, tedium, and 99 problems that distract from the other important things in life. In Peter’s case that’s studying for midterms, hanging out with his best buddy Harry Osborn, and, dare he dream, making it to Mary Jane Watson’s play on time.
In the two decades since the movie’s release, there have been plenty of other Spider-Man pictures. Some have been good, some amazing (looking at you Spider-Verse!), and more than a few that left you wanting. None of them though have been able to so succinctly tap into the appeal of those earliest comic book runs that defined the character...

Forty years old this year, the neo-noir Blood Simple marked the debut of Joel and Ethan Coen, and remains a captivating example of low-budget filmmaking.
To date, Joel and Ethan Coen haven’t made a pure horror film (though they’ve talked about it). Blood Simple, their 1984 debut, undoubtedly comes close. A neo-noir shot on a low budget, it shows that the writer-director brothers had their style down right from the beginning of their careers. Its script is witty and terse; its photography is fluid and stylish; its characters and tone are somehow both mundane and off-beat. Like so many of their later film, Blood Simple also defies easy categorisation; it’s a neo-noir, it’s a black comedy, and in several visceral scenes, dips gleefully into horror.
Much like Fargo or The Big Lebowski or any other thriller-infused Coen brothers film you could name, there are no criminal masterminds in Blood Simple – just ordinary,...

Eric Kripke’s The Boys is back with its bizarre take on superheroes for the fourth time. Despite many complaints about its slow burn treatment in the first three episodes, Season 4 has its share of strong performances and dark storylines like the last 3 seasons. Nevertheless, one scene from Episode 3 stood out for sharing an uncanny resemblance to Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man.

Cinema is an art. The very line has long defined the ethos of Hollywood and time has proved that those with a clear yet distinct artistic vision have reigned supreme at the box office for bringing a welcome change for the audiences. In this regard, Zack Snyder stacks up pretty high for his unique creative decisions that have, at times, rode high up in fame, whereas on other occasions, found themselves lashed upon by critics.

Regardless of fame and failure, the director, undeniably, has pushed forward major changes for the advancement of the industry as a whole. A stark example of it is his 2006 directorial, 300. Despite being hailed by Martin Scorsese as one of the best Italian films of the 1990s, Cemetery Man is criminally underseen. Also known as Dellamorte Dellamore, the 1994 cult classic has been hard to come by in the US since Anchor Bay’s 2006 DVD went out of print, but Severin Films has revived it with a 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray edition.
Dario Argento protégé Michele Soavi directs from a script by Gianni Romoli, based on the 1991 novel Dellamorte Dellamore by Tiziano Sclavi — itself a precursor to Sclavi’s influential Italian horror comic Dylan Dog. Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding), on whom the Dylan Dog character was visually based, takes on the lead role as Francesco Dellamorte.
As he explains in the noir-esque opening narration, Dellamorte is the watchman for a small town cemetery wherein “some people, on the seventh night after their death, come back to life.” He and his slow-witted but genial assistant,...

Robert Downey Jr. had a new lease on life when he was cast as Tony Stark in the MCU. Beginning his career with Iron Man, the actor bounced back from being an industry pariah to a world-renowned star. Downey Jr. went on to become the face of the MCU, starring in team-up films such as The Avengers, as well as the Iron Man trilogy.
While Marvel gave him a new beginning, being cast by the studio reportedly helped many other actors, including Paul Bettany. Bettany first joined the MCU as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. and then appeared as Vision. The actor reportedly had a tough time as a teen and was busking in the streets before he was kicked out of his apartment in London.

Behind a heavy steel door, inside the Los Angeles headquarters of the sixth-largest company in the world, television’s most terrifying villain is wincing and shifting in his chair. His ass hurts. During a trip to Mexico last week, Antony Starr, the New Zealand-born actor who plays Homelander on Prime’s The Boys, sat on a box that turned out to be a thin piece of cardboard covering a portable generator. “The handle went flush up my backside onto my tailbone,” he says, adjusting his position again. “So I’m...

Celebrated Thai American comic book creator Pornsak Pichetshote is launching The Horizon Experiment, a series of five one-shot comic books.
Each one features original protagonists from marginalized backgrounds set in a popular genre and inspired by pop culture icons. Each character’s unique background allows the stories to go into new directions.
Pichetshote is the creator of Eisner and Harvey Award-winning “The Good Asian” and “Infidel” books. Both are in different stages of development as TV series and a film, respectively. He was also a star editor at DC’s Vertigo imprint, working on titles including “The Sandman” and “Swamp Thing.”

In 2002, Tobey Maguire became the first live-action Spider-Man in the Sam Raimi directorial that laid the foundation for the character to be developed through the franchise and subsequently in the MCU. The actor-director duo went on to collaborate in 2 more films that completed a successful trilogy.

This costume that defined a more sinister and dark Spider-Man, was initially designed to look very different from what the actor finally wore in the film.

In 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man promised fans an "Untold Story," only for it to be very much the same as what we'd seen in Sam Raimi's movie.
While the trailers featured innovative Pov web-slinging scenes, those were largely absent from the finished product and what we did get proved largely underwhelming. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 upped the ante, though, delivering high-flying sequences more in line with Raimi's trilogy.
When Marvel Studios rebooted Peter Parker for the MCU, a great many changes were made to the character...including making him a "Friendly Neighbourhood" Spider-Man.
As a result, it wasn't until 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home that we got a true "final swing."
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, the plan is for Spider-Man 4 to feature web-slinging sequences more in line with what we saw before Marvel Studios' trilogy. This will surely be music to Spidey fans' ears as it was sorely missing...

One aspect that helped Spider-Man pop off in the 60s was his everyday struggles, which helped fans relate to the character, and it soon became the defining aspect of the character. Moreover, this core theme was beautifully translated into the big screen, thanks to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, which didn’t drop the ball while showcasing a hero’s struggle with responsibilities.
However, in the Tom Holland-led trilogy, the personal struggles of the character were sidelined after the first film, as being part of the MCU, the character had bigger problems to worry about. But it appears that the MCU is planning to go back to the character’s roots with the upcoming installment.

Cartoon Network has always been a place of experimentation. In the early years, shows like "Dexter's Laboratory" brought Sam Raimi references to animation. In the early '00s, shows like "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," and "Codename: Kids Next Door," added deep mythologies and more serialized storytelling. And in the 2010s, the network experimented with visuals in shows like "Flapjack" and "Adventure Time," which brought weirdness back into Cartoon Network.
This experimentation continued, with animators who got their start on the likes of "Flapjack" going on to develop influential and fantastic shows on their own. Still, as bold and imaginative as all these shows were, they were still mostly white men in charge of creating those cartoons. That all changed in 2013 with the release of "Steven Universe" -- one of the best cartoons of the century and a deeply emotional and inventive show inspired by superheroes and magical-girl anime. Since the mid-80s, the PG rating has been mostly exclusive to films aimed at kids, and even though there have been releases that pushed its boundaries, they’re few and far between. However, for a long time, this wasn’t the case, as before the PG-13 rating was introduced, films were either rated PG or R, with the latter only being reserved for extreme cases, such as Evil Dead.
This flawed system would finally undergo a massive change, thanks to Steven Spielberg and his blockbusters, especially Gremlins, which too earned a PG rating upon its release. But had the creators stuck to the initial draft of Chris Columbus, the horror would’ve definitely been given the same treatment as that of Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead.

Willem Dafoe’s transformation into Hollywood’s iconic villain is nothing short of cinematic poetry, the face and eyes of the actor gleams a sinister allure. In his evil-laden portfolio, he has portrayed a number of antagonists but one stands above all. It is none other than the psychotic Green Goblin from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise.

The character is one of the most fan-favorite villains in the franchise, and his fan following is so vast that he returned in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. While fans were delighted to see Dafoe on his glider, giving a chilling laugh, he had one complaint about reprising his role. While sitting with Wired, he talked about how he disliked the idea of using the de-aging effects done on him in the film.

The world changed forever when Samuel L. Jackson showed up in the post-credits scene of Iron Man as Nick Fury talking to Robert Downey Jr. about the ‘Avengers Initiative’. The scene gave birth to the MCU and the culture of post-credits scenes that did not just feature in the Marvel films but also carried over to every other shared cinematic universe.
While the legendary scene teased The Avengers, which drove fans crazy, one deleted take of the scene showed Jackson referring to Spider-Man and the X-Men. While both properties were owned by Sony and Fox at the time, the dialogue proved that producer and Marvel CEO Kevin Feige always wanted to include the two in the MCU.

Sam Raimi was among the filmmakers who added to the rise and popularity of the superhero genre after Blade and X-Men with his Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire. The first two films have been considered landmarks that changed the genre, providing character depth and emotion that made the films more than just action spectacles.

Considering Marvel and DC’s vast universe, there are several characters who are yet to make onscreen appearances. But among the few who made their way to the silver screen and TV shows, Spider-Man became the most renowned and appreciated superhero. Thus, when the character first appeared onscreen under Sam Raimi’s direction, several actors tried their luck during auditions.

One among the crowd of A-listers who hoped to crack the audition for a leading role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was legendary actress Elizabeth Banks. According to reports, Banks auditioned to play Mary Jane Watson in the original Spider-Man movie. Tobey Maguire went the extra mile to convince producers that he was the perfect guy for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Several actors from Leonardo DiCaprio to Yellowstone‘s Wes Bentley were considered for the role, but Raimi was impressed with Maguire’s performance in The Cider House Rules. The studio didn’t think Maguire was the adrenaline-pumping superhero for the film, but The Great Gatsby actor proved them wrong.

He later demonstrated his action skills, displaying his well-toned body in the process, which alleviated any doubts that the studio had about his abilities. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the main cast of one film seldom appeared in another’s story, unless the characters were in some sort of a spin-off situation. So when fans and audiences become privy to all the potential crossovers that they could have seen over the years, it is quite a frustrating situation, given that these stories were not over-saturated with easter eggs and corporate product placement.

The Office alum John Krasinski had long been a fan-favourite choice to play Mister Fantastic and finally got the chance to do so as a member of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Illuminati.
Added during reshoots, Reed Richards' role in the sequel was far too brief and his death at the hands of the Scarlet Witch...well, the less said about that, the better. Even so, many fans appreciated seeing Krasinski suit up and it was a nice surprise for the stretchy superhero to make his MCU debut on Earth-838.
We've seen concept art with several different suit designs, but a viral clip from a VFX reel reveals just how close Mister Fantastic came to donning a primarily black suit instead of the blue one we saw on screen.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has dominated the superhero genre in recent years, the film that ruled fans’ hearts even before the Avengers assembled, was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Starring Tobey Maguire alongside Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe, the film sparked a huge interest among the audience after its original trailer was attached to screenings of numerous films’ in 2001, including Jurassic Park III and Rush Hour.

Being one of the most popular superheroes, Spider-Man has been the subject of numerous adaptations, each representing its own iterations of Peter Parker and the web-slinger. While some of these have become a fan favorite, such as Tobey Maguire, and achieved huge commercial success, such as Tom Holland’s venture into the MCU, Andrew Garfield’s stint as The Amazing Spider-Man remains the least favorite.

Garfield’s films are not only considered subpar but have also underperformed at the box office comparatively. However, as all the Spider-Man movies once again hit the theatres in celebration of Columbia Pictures’ 100th anniversary, the worst-rated adaptation has managed to surpass the MCU blockbuster No Way Home.

The first full teaser for Alien: Romulus contains lots of nods to Alien and Aliens. Not only does it integrate the famous tagline for the first film, but we get plenty of cool guns, facehuggers on the attack, and even a xenomorph rising from the water. In other words, all things that made Aliens great.
The connections between Alien and Aliens make sense. Director Fede Álvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues have made clear that Romulus takes place between those two landmark films. However, the standout, most shocking scene pays homage to Alien 3, a movie so divisive that even director David Fincher disowned it.
In the final image of the trailer, a xenomorph approaches protagonist Rain and extends its inner jaw. Soaked with sweat and steam, Rain turns her anguished face away from the monster and toward the camera.

Sunday mornings, freshly cooked breakfast, perched in front of the TV – that’s how millions of kids spent the beginning of their week across the States back in the day. Fox Kids’ Spider-Man: The Animated Series was the introduction to the titular superhero for a lot of 90s kids, and still remains one of the better Marvel animated shows to this day.

The 1994 series brought a number of characters from Spider-Man mythos to the screen. Among them, the chief editor of The Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson, stands apart from the rest for his incessant hate towards the “masked menace”.
One particular episode, Sting of the Scorpion, added more depth to the Spidey critic, giving fans more reasons to love/hate him.

"The Boys" season 4 will soon be upon us, but we'd be remiss to forget the spin-off series "Gen V." I was skeptical about the college-set superhero show, but it proved to have the same audacious spirit as its parent program ("Gen V" has pluckier leads too).
One of the most memorable "Gen V" scenes is the "puppet massacre" in episode 5, "Welcome to the Monster Club." Sam Riordan (Asa Germann), a super-strong teenager who's been locked in a lab, goes berserk and tears some attacking soldiers apart. But due to his loose grip on reality, he imagines himself and the others as Muppets, leading to a scene where Sam disembowels men but we only see puppet blood and bones. "The Boys" and "Gen V" are not shy about violence, so this altered reality has nothing to do with censorship. Rather, it explores Sam's character and his childish outlook on violence he...

Apprehensions regarding the fate of Marvel Studios post Avengers: Endgame went away right after a cinema-defining experience brought over by Spider-Man: No Way Home. The third iteration of the Tom Holland-led trilogy climbed up box office ranks swiftly while also bringing the multiverse into full force. Moreover, the implications of the storyline directly tied into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it gave rise to speculations regarding Avengers: Secret Wars.

Exclusive: Las Vegas-based production companies Beno Films and Al Bravo Films have wrapped production in Little Rock, Arkansas, on the horror thriller Dead and breakfast starring Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding).
Also starring in the pic are William Moseley, Chris Mullinax, and Texas Battle. Loppo Jp Martinez directs from an original screenplay he penned. The horror thriller follows five petty criminals who rob a pawn shop in Kansas City. Eduard Osipov, Al Bravo, and Rj Collins produced the film. Michael Pizzimenti and Michelle Deppe co-produce for Al Bravo Films in association with Fluffybear Media. Bravo previously produced the revenge thriller Ruthless starring Dermot Mulroney, released by Saban Films in North America and currently streaming on Hulu.

Eddie Brock and his…better(?) half “may not make it out of [this one] alive.” That’s probably why the third and final film in the “Venom” series is subtitled “The Last Dance.”
On Monday, Sony Pictures released the trailer for the Marvel movie that officially makes “Venom” a trilogy. You would think by now the Tom Hardy character and his frenemy alien symbiote would have their timing down a bit better, but an early (and comedic) scene in the official trailer proves they’ve still got some work to do. The levity soon gives way to Brock/Venom biting four guys’ heads off — classic Venom.
In “Venom: The Last Dance,” the guys are on the lam — and it’s not just their Earth enemies who are closing in. The film’s tagline is “‘Til Death Do They Part,” which does not particularly promise a happy ending.
