Back in 1985, Emilio Estevez and Andrew McCarthy shared the screen in the Joel Schumacher-directed coming-of-age film St. Elmo’s Fire, which was a box office hit that’s still remembered fondly to this day, even though the critical response wasn’t very positive. In the build-up to the release of that film, Estevez and McCarthy were set to co-star in another project, called Young Men with Unlimited Capital… but unfortunately, eighteen days before the release of St. Elmo’s Fire, New York Magazine published an article by David Blum in which Blum dubbed several of the hottest young actors of the day the Brat Pack. The actors mentioned in that article were shocked and offended by the Brat Pack label – so much that Estevez refused to do Young Men with Unlimited Capital with McCarthy, killing the project. Thirty-nine years later, the story of Young Men with Unlimited Capital has still never made it to the screen.

For viewers of a certain age — or, perhaps more likely at this point, most ages — the term “Brat Pack” evokes nostalgia at its fondest. Movies like “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink” remain rites of passage for teenagers coming of age nearly 40 years later, and few would argue that the 1980s didn’t represent a high-water mark for teen movies. For actual members of that coterie of actors, it’s a little more complicated.
That’s especially true of Andrew McCarthy, who remains so conflicted about the term coined by David Blum in his June 10, 1985 cover story for New York that he made a documentary about it (after earlier publishing a memoir entitled “Brat”). A core Brat Packer whose filmography is headlined by the likes of “Pretty in Pink” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” McCarthy has more recently stepped behind the camera and directed episodes of “Orange Is the New Black” and “13 Reasons Why,...

Everyone of a certain age has a core memory of the iconic “Brat Pack,” even those born after their heyday. But what about the group itself? On June 13, 2024, that is the question that Hulu’s “Brats” asks as actor and director Andrew McCarthy interviews fellow Brat Packers Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Jon Cryer, Timothy Hutton and Lea Thompson.
Centering on 1980s films starring the “Brat Pack” and their profound impact on the young stars’ lives, “Brats” is certified fresh with a score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The term was notably coined by New York Magazine writer David Blum (it wasn’t a compliment), who was hoping to gain attention in the journalism world. And yes, he is confronted in the film. The Brat Pack was a group of young actors who rose to fame in movies such as Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo’s Fire, and The Breakfast Club. In the documentary Brats, filmmaker Andrew McCarthy spoke to this group of celebrities, whose lives were forever changed by the title. However, one of its most recognizable faces, Molly Ringwald didn’t appear in the film. Here’s why.
Why didn’t Molly Ringwald appear in ‘Brats?’
The documentary Brats looks back at the “Brat Pack” moniker and its impact on a select group of actors. It explores the narrative that took hold of their lives once the phrase was coined.
However, one of the era’s biggest stars was conspicuously absent from those who appeared in the documentary; Molly Ringwald. She was the star of Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club and an icon for millions of movie fans worldwide.

Hulu’s recent Bon Jovi Documentary has reignited an interest in the music of the 80s and 90s. Now, Brats, Andrew McCarthy’s new Brat Pack documentary promises to delve into the movies of the 80s and a group of actors known as The Brat Pack.
Andrew McCarthy Brat Pack – YouTube Who Coined The Phrase ‘The Brat Pack’?
Before the phrase “The Brat Pack,” actors such as Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe, and Emilio Estevez were actors. However, after that monicker, their lives changed. This happened in 1985 when New York Magazine writer David Blum decided to make a play on the “Rat Pack.” This trio consisted of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., a group considered the pinnacle of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Although this was a clever label, it wound up haunting many actors in this group. That is because their livelihood as actors was negatively affected by this label.

Andrew McCarthy’s documentary Brats, based on his book Brats: An ’80s Story, offers an intimate exploration of the Brat Pack — a group of young actors who became cultural icons in the 1980s. Through candid interviews and nostalgic reflections, McCarthy delves into the nostalgia of the “Brat Pack” label, coined by journalist David Blum in a 1985 New York magazine article. This term, intended as a playful nod to the Rat Pack of the 1950s and ’60s, had lasting effects on the careers and personal lives of its members.
McCarthy reunites with his past co-stars including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson and Timothy Hutton, many of whom he had not seen in more than 30 years. What are we to make of the fact that Andrew McCarthy’s first effort as a documentary filmmaker is a bitter excoriation of the Brat Pack tag that defined him — and is also ostentatiously named after it?
It would be just ducky to be able to report that “Brats” is the inside deep-dive we might wish it to be. But really, it’s a lightly-indulgent passion project that leaves us wanting so much more.
McCarthy begins by noting frankly that “we were who you wanted to hang with, who you envied, who you wanted to party with.” The “we,” of course, also refers to Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe, as well as Pack-adjacent stars like James Spader, Lea Thompson and Jon Cryer. The upcoming series adaptation of “The Chicken Sisters” at Hallmark has added Ektor Rivera to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.
Variety exclusively reported in May that Hallmark had picked up the series, which is based on the Kj Dell’Antonia novel of the same name. Rivera joins previously announced cast members Schuyler Fisk, Genevieve Angelson, Lea Thompson and Wendie Malick. The series is currently in production and is slated to air later this year. Rivera will play the character Sergio.
The official logline for the series states that it is set in the fictional town of Merinac, “where a generations-old rift between dueling fried chicken restaurants – Mimi’s and Frannie’s – has left the founders’ families fractured and the locals taking sides. When a popular cooking show comes to town, things get more complicated as sparks begin to fly and secrets are uncovered.”

Back to the Future is one of the most iconic films of all time. It managed to completely change the sci-fi genre forever, gained popularity in a way that was unheard of, and started a wave of influence and inspiration that can be felt in Hollywood to date. While the film series, as a whole, has had this effect, there is no denying that the first film always stands out the most.

As we head into the summer, Hulu is shaping up to be one of the most valuable streaming services to have in the month of June. Not only is one of the best shows on television returning for its third season, but the Disney-owned general entertainment platform is also launching a new comedy banner, and FX goes behind the scenes of one of the most explosive situations in recent sports history.
“The Bear” will drop all 10 of its Season 3 episodes on June 27 in what is undoubtedly one of the year’s most anticipated releases. However, that is not the only hot title coming to Hulu in June, the streamer will also launch its “Hulu’s Laughing Now” brand, the sports-focused series “Clipped” that dramatizes the downfall of Donald Sterling as the owner of the LA Clippers, and the documentary “Brats” that brings together members of the legendary Brat Pack to chronicle their rise to fame.

Andrew McCarthy has written and directed Brats, and his documentary about The Brat Pack arrives in June. Here’s the first trailer.
Tearing up the 1980s, both on and off cinema screens, was a bunch of young performers who earned themselves the collective name of The Brat Pack.
The group was made up of the likes of Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Bob Cryer and Andrew McCarthy, and they sprung to prominence particularly in 1985 and 1986. That’s when that group made up the cast for two hit movies, namely St Elmo’s Fire (pictured) and Pretty In Pink.
Other films followed, and the tabloid interest was intense, leading writer David Blum to give them the Brat Pack name. Andrew McCarthy reflected on all of this in a memoir he penned called Brats, released in 2021. Now, Deadline reports that the story is being turned by McCarthy into a documentary.

When Hollywood dubbed actors like Andrew McCarthy, Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, and Rob Lowe as members of The Brat Pack, the label triggered an unwanted chain reaction throughout the group. While growing up in the 1980s, teen-focused cinema took more chances than it does today. Films that could be rated R were PG, and offensive language and slurs came from the mouths of babes. In my generation’s defense, we didn’t know any better, and time has shown how dated some ’80s themes and characters could be. It was a hell of a time to be alive, and some actors associated with this era are ready to reunite and evaluate their most significant contributions to film with Brats, a new feature-length documentary from filmmaker Andrew McCarthy.

To understand "Left Behind," one must understand a version of Christianity not widely practiced by many people outside certain pockets of the United States. In some American Evangelical churches, they preach of the coming Rapture, when all of the Christians on Earth -- including the dead ones -- will be bodily scooped up by God and transported into Heaven. The idea of a Rapture is taken from an interpretation from the Book of Thessalonians which didn't enter into the Christian lexicon until about the 1830s, making it a very recent development. When Evangelical churches began to become popular in the United States in the 1950s, a stripe of fundamentalist theology began embracing the Rapture as a prophecy that was almost immediately nigh.

The "Back to the Future" films are incredibly beloved, with a unique impact on pop culture that's almost hard to quantify. Robert Zemeckis' 1985 film "Back to the Future" spawned two sequels, a video game, and even a musical, as well as providing the genesis for the adult cartoon "Rick and Morty." The first movie is a zany tale of down-on-his-luck teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) who ends up traveling through time in a DeLorean with the help of mad scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), wreaking havoc on the timeline and engaging in all kinds of silly time travel tropes along the way. The second film is a direct continuation of the first, with time travel to 1955 and 2015 to try and create the best future for Marty and his family. It's not as beloved as the first movie, but folks are still pretty fond of it. Then there's the "Back to the Future Part III,...

Lovers of 80s movies know the Brat Pack. The group of stars who graced the silver screen in films like Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and St. Elmos Fire were teen sensations and helped a generation grapple with coming-of-age issues in high school. Most have gone on to blossom into illustrious film careers, but they will always be remembered for their run in the 1980s film scene. While most also eventually bowed gracefully out of show business down the line, Andrew McCarthy was one member who had been out of the spotlight since the 90s.

McCarthy had written a memoir called Brat: An 80s story and has now written and directed the documentary that is currently in post-production. John Nichols, who wrote more than a dozen novels including The Milagro Beanfield War and The Sterile Cuckoo — both of which were turned into films by top directors — died Wednesday in Taos, Nm. He was 83.
Nichols, whose works often told stories of small-town New Mexico and social injustice, also co-wrote the screenplay for Milagro Beanfield War. Focused on a battle between mostly Latino farmers and local politicians and real estate developers, it became a 1988 film produced and directed by Robert Redford. The pic starring Ruben Blades, Richard Bradford and Sonia Braga won an Oscar for Dave Grusin’s jazzy score. Watch a trailer below.
Nichols’ 1965 debut novel The Sterile Cuckoo was adapted four years later into a film by Alan J. Pakula. It starred Liza Minnelli in her Oscar-nominated role as Pookie, a zany but honest woman who falls for a young man (Wendell Burton) just before he leaves for college.
