In the summer of 1996, the World Wrestling Federation held its annual King of the Ring tournament. After weeks of matches, the semis and finals were set for June 23rd, 1996, with Stone Cold Steve Austin facing Jake “The Snake” Roberts for the crown later in the night. Roberts, then known for working from a Christian angle, would cut a promo before the match doing just that. Just before Austin took the ring and pinned Roberts, he was tipped about the promo’s contents.
After the five-minute match, Austin stood next to the same man who tipped him off, Michael Hayes. And it was there that a legend and a catchphrase were born, and an entire industry was born again. With a mouth full of blood, Stone Cold Steve Austin told his defeated opponent: “You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn’t get you anywhere!

However, he almost made a WWE Superstar retire for good after an outburst in the ring.

WWE 2K23 features quite a few improvements to the franchise formula that will certainly be welcomed by wrestling game fans everywhere. Of course, some things never change, which means that WWE 2K23 still makes you unlock quite a few wrestlers via gameplay accomplishments and by spending both real and virtual currency.
The very good news is that WWE 2K23 makes the various unlock processes fairly painless. The problem is that the game doesn’t always do a great job of telling you exactly how to unlock those wrestlers or the best way to go about acquiring all of them. Hopefully, we can help ease that part of the unlock system just a bit.
How to Unlock Every WWE 2K23 Wrestler With Virtual Currency
The vast majority of wrestlers in WWE 2K23 are unlocked via the game’s Virtual Currency (Vc) system. Every wrestler available via the in-game store costs 1,000 Vc to unlock.

By definition, spoilers are no fun. No one wants to have their good time spoiled by anything or anybody. If you're one of those people who finds enjoyment in spoiling films and TV shows for others, then you're a jerk.
But sometimes spoilers can come by accident. Your friend could let a spoiler slip without even thinking. Or you might unintentionally overhear a spoiler from a nearby conversation. And it's even possible that, as part of your job, you could be interviewing someone from a show that's adapted from a comic book. Then the actor wrongly assumes that everyone at the roundtable has read the latest issue, starts talking about your favorite character's death, and you get spoiled because you read the book in trades.
Similarly, if people wrongly assume that you've seen a TV show that's been out for 15 years, then that's another way that you could accidentally be spoiled.

Eric Bischoff made a very interesting comment recently about both Aew and WWE. The former WCW personality stated on his 83 Weeks podcast that he feels that WWE tells better stories overall, “You could take WWE’s existing roster, bring it over to Aew and nothing is going to happen. It’s story, and first of all, you have to have a basic understanding of how to tell a story and I don’t see it. I see it in WWE and I don’t see it in Aew.” It’s an interesting perspective since Bischoff has been in both WWE and Aew, and that

TheWrap is tagging itself in to debut the trailer for the two-hour “Dark Side of the Ring” Season 3 premiere episode, which centers on the life and death of Brian Pillman — but that’s not all. Vice TV has set the premiere dates for “Dark Side of the Ring” Season 3 and spinoff “Dark Side of Football.” Both also now have (violent) trailers.
Ok, so the sneak peek for “Football” is more of a teaser. While it may appear from the brief video that Joe Paterno and Penn State are being profiled, a spokesperson for Vice told TheWrap this first season will focus completely on professional football.
The third season of “Dark Side of the Ring” will debut on Thursday, May 6 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt.
In that trailer, Aew wrestler Jon Moxley (formerly Dean Ambrose in WWE) reminds viewers that professional wrestling is not always “a children’s TV show on Saturday morning” — it’s sometimes “a fight.”
Then actor David Arquette gets awfully bloodied, admitting, “I was in over my head.”

Pat Patterson, the former WWF professional wrestler, commentator and WWE match producer, has died at 79. When someone as beloved as Patterson passes, it does not take long for the genuine and heartfelt tributes to begin rolling in.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson led the tributes, penning a message to his “father figure” on Instagram, and recounted how Patterson helped him land his first WWE wrestling match.
“He was also responsible for calling Vince McMahon when I was training to become a pro wrestler (my $7 bucks days) and said, ‘Vince you gotta see this kid work in the ring.’ Vince flew me to Raw a few weeks later and I had my first match Ever in Corpus Christie, Texas. Well, Royal Rumble has passed us by, WrestleMania is in the distance, SummerSlam is in the rear-view, and so it leaves that final member of the original “Big Four” WWE shows left for the year, with Survivor Series on the horizon for this November. I thought, then, that it might be fun to go back through the annals of Survivor Series history and pluck out ten of the very best matches from the event. Now, this wasn’t going to be a cake-walk. It wouldn’t be easy, afterall, there have been hundreds of matches at the event since its inception back in 1987. Still… I like a challenge, and I like pro-wrestling, so here we go. The ten best (in my modest little view at least) matches in Survivor Series history.

You Cannot Kill David Arquette Deliver’s A Body Slam From The Heart An Interview With The Director’s
Back in 2000, David Arquette actor turned wrestler turned out to be the biggest heal in the hearts of wrestling fans when he won the World Heavyweight Championship in WCW. Arquette pinned Eric Bischoff in what many fans considered one of the dyer moments of the already dying wrestling promotion that was WCW. You Cannot Kill David Arquette is a film directed by David Darg and Price James that takes a look at Arquette and the ups and downs that the actor has faced since the day’s Arquette became a heel in the eyes of wrestling fan’s and the jokester of Hollywood. The film is funny, and entertaining, and I dear say heartfelt in Arquette’s persistence to get back in the ring and be taken seriously as a professional wrestler. We had the awesome opportunity to interview the directors of the film and get an insight into the film.

David Arquette is known for a few things. He’s best recognized as Deputy Dewey Riley in the Scream franchise of films, of course. However, he’s also famous, or perhaps infamous, for being an actor who cameoed for a time in World Championship Wrestling (better known as WCW). Not only did he get in the ring, but a storyline had him win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, something that wrestling fans hated with a vicious passion. Not only did this halt whatever wrestling career the passionate fan of the sport had, it torpedoed his ascent in Hollywood, as well. The new documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette not just tackles this bit of his history, but his recent decision to try and wrestle again, all in an effort to get some measure of respect. If it sounds silly, it’s actually surprisingly empathetic and emotional. The movie is a documentary about,...

So, I’m a wrestling fan, have been for going-on three decades, and so when I’m not watching pro-wrestling on television or on PPV, or when I’m not looking back on old shows, or when I’m not collecting wrestling figures, or when I’m not watching documentaries about the wrestling business, I’m likely listening to a pro-wrestling podcast. Oh, and there’s a whole lot of those. The podcast world is drenched with high-quality wrestling podcasts, and because of this fact I can’t listen to them all, but I do my best to listen to a good selection of them, and so I thought I’d recommend a few here, a few that I personally consider the best wrestling podcasts out there today.

Welcome to this review of 205 Live, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have more cruiserweight action from the thing Eric Bischoff built and then Vince McMahon took credit for. Hopefully, this show will turn out better than it has in previous weeks.
Match #1: Tyler Breeze def. Ariya Daivari The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Last week on WWE 205 Live, Ariya Daivari was defeated by the Cruiserweight division’s newest arrival, Tyler Breeze. Not satisfied with the outcome of the match, The Persian Lion had another opportunity to stop Prince Pretty’s momentum in a rematch. As the opening bell sounded, Breeze wasted little time going after Daivari. Although The Gorgeous One enjoyed an early advantage, a melee on the outside of the ring allowed The Persian Lion to mount a flurry of offense. Nevertheless, the competitiveness of both Superstars took precedence and they battled back and forth.

Aew's much-maligned group has taken on some serious Nwo undertones the last two weeks ...
The Dark Order has been a maligned group in Aew. From their debut over the summer to the ill-timed push the group has been receiving since Aew Dynamite debuted on TNT this past fall, every step for the Dark Order has been met with heavy criticism.
Not enough was done to build the characters. Formerly the Super Smash Brothers, no explanation was given to longtime wrestling fans on why the team had new personas. At the same time, to new Aew fans who maybe didn't see the Super Smash Brothers in Roh or the indie scene, little was done to introduce them or tell the audience their backstory.
They were this group of evil, who had followers in masks, and they existed merely to exist. One of Aew's biggest missteps since the launch...

Bruce Prichard has replaced Eric Bischoff as executive director of Fox professional wrestling series “Friday Night SmackDown,” WWE said on Tuesday. Former WCW boss Bischoff has been let go from the company, a person with knowledge of his status told TheWrap. Bischoff served less than four months at the blue brand’s top post.
Prichard will report directly to WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. As executive director of “SmackDown,” Prichard will “oversee the creative development of ‘Friday Night SmackDown’ on Fox and ensure integration across all platforms and lines of business,” in WWE’s words.
Bischoff was promoted to executive director of “SmackDown,” then a USA Network series, in late June. At the same time, WWE upped Paul Heyman to the same role on Monday show “Raw.”

WWE did not elaborate on the reasoning behind Bischoff being fired.

WWE split up its rosters with Fox and USA "executives" making the picks ...
WWE held its Draft on Friday and Monday, splitting up rosters between SmackDown on Fox and Raw on USA Network. Different than in prior years, WWE ran a storyline where executives from each network were picking the wrestlers they wanted on their show. It was a nice real-world touch, despite the cheesy acting every time they went to the "war rooms" of each network.
Let's run down the results.
Raw will be headlined by Universal Championship Seth Rollins, with the main-event talent also including Aj Styles, Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton. The next level includes Ricochet, Bobby Lashley, Kevin Owens, Samoa Joe and Andrade. The mid-card portion of the roster will have Rusev, Aleister Black, Rey Mysteiro and R-Truth while the bottom of the card features Cedric Alexander, Sin Cara, Carillo, Erick Rowan, Buddy Murphy,...

Table for Three is a great original show idea and I’ve enjoyed watching each episodes over the past five seasons or so. The new episode which landed this week was titled “General Managers Special” and features Eric Bischoff, Kurt Angle and Vickie Guerrero.
Now, if you’ve been a fan of WWE over the past couple of decades you’ll have seen each of these guys feature on WWE programming as a General Manager of either Raw or SmackDown (or both). Kurt Angle is the most recent Gm, heading up Raw a year or so back, with the other guys not having done it in a while, but it’s a fun mix, and each of these WWE legends are enthusiastic and likeable as they talk about their individual runs as Gm’s in WWE.
Now, the show only ever lasts a half-hour, so there’s not much conversation beyond the topic on hand,...

WWE rosters will shake up after SmackDown moves to Fox ...
WWE is re-shuffling the deck.
The company announced on Sunday — during Fox's NFL broadcast — that there will be a draft to shake up the rosters beginning on Oct. 11, one week after SmackDown moves to the Fox network.
What's interesting about this move is SmackDown will be the first night of the draft, with it concluding on Raw three days later on Oct. 14. There have been rumblings that WWE will treat SmackDown as the "A" show after it moves to Fox, airing in primetime every Friday night.
Fox will reach more potential households than USA Network, the home for Raw.
The press release that followed the announcement noted that the company will feature "distinct casts" on each of its shows. The release also plugged that Raw and SmackDown will have "unique storylines and dedicated writing teams."

WWE is undergoing a major behind-the-scenes shakeup, with “Raw” head writer Ed Koskey replacing Ryan Ward as “SmackDown” lead writer under executive director Eric Bischoff, an individual with knowledge of the plans told TheWrap.
Jonathan Baeckstrom, the former lead writer of “205 Live,” is backfilling Koskey’s lofty “Raw” role under executive director Paul Heyman. The changes have been in the works for weeks and follow what the insider called a “botched” summer storyline involving a doppelgänger for bad buy Erick Rowan.
Ward will be taking a “short-term leave of absence,” the insider said, declining to specify the reason for his leave. Should he return to WWE from that leave, Ward will likely join the “home team” — or the company’s non-traveling group of writers. That would be considered a major step down for Ward, who reassumed his position as “SmackDown” head writer earlier this year.

Despite hiring new executive producers, Vince McMahon is reportedly still ruling with an iron fist ...
Perhaps there is a reason the Roman Reigns-Daniel Bryan storyline that has played out on SmackDown the last several weeks has almost zero semblance of sense to it.
According to veteran wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, WWE CEO Vince McMahon ripped up the SmackDown script about four hours before Tuesday night's show and re-wrote the program himself.
Vince was tearing up tonight's show. Good or bad, this is a heavy Vince show tonight.
— Dave Meltzer (@davemeltzerWON) August 27, 2019
Let's summarize through the Reigns-Bryan storyline over the last several weeks and see if it makes any sense to you.
First, Reigns was attacked backstage at a WWE event — he had a set of staging pushed over on top of him — and then he was run down by a car in a parking lot during a Raw.

Welcome to this week’s Ring Of Honor review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have a wild main event that even Eric Bischoff would cut to save money, even though that’s not how that works.
Match #1: Silas Young defeated Josh Woods The following is courtesy of rohwrestling.com:
Before locking up, Young grabbed a microphone and told Woods that he’s been in Roh about two years and hasn’t accomplished anything. He said Woods should be winning titles and earning the respect of his peers but even the fans don’t respect him. Young said Woods has a lot of learning to do before he earns respect. He told Woods to put up or shut up. Young handed the microphone to the referee, and as the referee turned to hand it off to a ringside attendant, Young kicked Woods low and locked on an inside cradle.

It’s good to see Vince McMahon understand that for his World Wrestling Entertainment empire to take a step forward, he needs to take a step back.
After offering excuses for WWE’s poor creative product on previous earnings calls, the WWE CEO wisely acknowledged Thursday that two new hires he made earlier this month freed him up “to look at longer range story arcs and work on character development, versus being in the weeds.”
Although the future looks brighter, the present is still a little dim. With another lackluster quarterly earnings report on the books, WWE attempted to mask its poor performance during its Q2 earnings call by focusing on the new overseers, Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff, of his primetime series on USA and eventually Fox.
The decision to create two new executive positions is just what McMahon needs to position himself to take a more strategic view of the WWE product,...

WWE’s “Raw Reunion” Monday night pinned down 3.093 million total viewers, an increase of 26% from last week’s regular ol’ “Raw” episode.
In terms of both total viewers and the key 18-49 demographic, last night’s “Raw” was actually the highest-rated episode since the April 16, 2018 Superstar Shakeup.
Yes, that means it did even better than the “Raw” after WrestleMania 35, which is a big performer annually and marks the start of World Wrestling Entertainment’s new “season.” Monday’s episode was 5% higher among adults 18-49 than that April 8, 2019 fallout show, and did 6% better overall.

When World Wrestling Entertainment reported its sluggish first-quarter performance in April, CEO Vince McMahon blamed it on “superstar absences,” the temporary sidelining of many of his star grapplers due to injuries accumulated in 2018 and early 2019.
But now that WWE is on the verge of releasing its second-quarter numbers on July 25, McMahon is going to have to come up with a new excuse if his company’s Q2 results remain soft.
A Variety analysis indicates that although nearly all of the injured wrestlers McMahon referenced returned to the ring in the first half of 2019, ratings for WWE’s flagship TV properties, “Raw” and “SmackDown,” sunk significantly compared with the same period last year.
Without “superstar absences” to blame, it will be interesting at the end of Q2 to see how McMahon explains the worrisome decline. He may have to do just that if he addresses high-profile new hires he made last...

Welcome to this week’s Smackdown Live review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Eric Bischoff wasn’t booking the show, if the rumors are to be believed. Okay, let’s see if a show built around Daniel Bryan’s major announcement is any good.
Match #1: Aleister Black def. Cesaro The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Following their show-stealing clash at WWE Extreme Rules, Aleister Black and Cesaro ran it back on the blue brand. Looking to claim a second monumental victory over The Swiss Cyborg after defeating him on Sunday, Aleister Black immediately brought the fight to his opposition, forcing Cesaro to retreat in the early goings. The King of Swing battled back with a submission-based attack, but Black refused to stay down and finished off Cesaro with a brutal Black Mass that sent Cesaro’s mouthpiece flying across the ring.

Welcome to this week’s Smackdown Live review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have more from Vince McMahon and…Eric Bischoff? That’s a lame way to bring this up. Eric Bischoff has been (legitimately) hired to run Smackdown within a few weeks. This is certainly a new development worth keeping an eye on. Also, Paul Heyman is now (eventually) running Raw. Okay, let’s see how the build toward Extreme Rules goes on this episode of Smackdown.
Match #1: Daniel Bryan def. Big E The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
With The New Day eyeing Daniel Bryan & Rowan’s SmackDown Tag Team Titles at WWE Extreme Rules, Big E and Daniel Bryan squared off in one-on-one action on the blue brand. With Xavier Woods and Rowan at ringside, Big E suplexed The Beard around the squared circle at ease, though Bryan fired back with his signature punishing kicks.

So, fans of WWE (and wrestling in general) will likely have heard the latest news that Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff, two mainstays of pro-wrestling for decades, have been given brand-new roles in WWE as Executive Directors of Raw and Smackdown Live respectively. These, as far as news has told us, aren’t on-screen roles, but will give Heyman and Bischoff control over their respective brands and the two men will be responsible for overseeing the creative output of each show.
This is huge news and has been greeted with more positive than negative by fans. I’m in the camp that says “yay, something new to help shake things up and possibly improve the overall WWE product” and so should everyone else be.
2019 pro-wrestling is a very different animal to the animal that growled and prowled when Heyman and Bischoff were in charge of Ecw and WCW respectively in the late 90s.

Set your alarm clocks and bust out your credit cards, wrestling fans: New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s (Njpw) “Southern Showdown” from Melbourne, Australia is set to stream live Saturday morning starting a 5 a.m. Et — and if you want to watch it, the lone option is forking over $24.99 to Fite TV.
Despite the early start time, Fite COO Mike Weber told TheWrap “we’re optimistic that it’s gonna be one of the best events we’ve done,” buy-wise, but acknowledged that they “don’t understand the buying habits of the Japanese the way we do Americans or Europeans.”
Beyond our borders and the similar-enough U.K. ones, consumers “don’t really like buying a pay-per-view product,” Weber said — especially in Japan, which is obviously the home turf to the popular professional wrestling league. But they love Njpw, and Weber believes “Southern Showdown” has “a very strong card that the Japanese fans will like.

Paul Heyman and Eric Bischoff have been placed in charge of WWE TV, with the first running “Raw” as executive director and the second handling the same duties for “SmackDown Live,” an individual with knowledge of the promotions confirmed for TheWrap. WWE later sent out a press release announcing the moves.
Both the Ecw founder and the former WCW president will report directly to WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon.
In their newly created executive roles, Heyman and Bischoff will oversee the creative development of WWE’s flagship programming and ensure integration across all platforms and lines of business, in WWE’s verbiage.

Chris Hemsworth is headed to the wrestling ring! The 35-year-old actor has signed on to play WWE icon Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic that's being directed by Todd Phillips and written by Scott Silver. Phillips will also produce the project, alongside Hemsworth and Bradley Cooper - with whom Phillips shares production company Joint Effort - as well as Spotlight's Michael Sugar, and Eric Bischoff.
The biopic will retell the life story of Hogan - born Terry Gene Bollea - and his ascent to the top as one of the world's most well-known wrestlers and head of "Hulkamania." He was an especially notable figure in the late 1970s and '80s and gained popularity through the World Wrestling Federation (now known as the WWE) with his flamboyant fighting style and signature moves. He was also involved in a major sex scandal with the wife of a friend, which led to a million-dollar lawsuit.

Chris Hemsworth is to put his huge guns to work outside of the Marvel universe to take on the role of wrestling legend Hulk Hogan in Todd Phillips biopic for Netflix.
The team behind ‘The Joker’ of Phillips and Scott Silver have reunited with Phillips taking the helm on the project co-written by Silver and John Pollono. Hemsworth will also produce alongside Eric Bischoff, Michael Sugar, Phillips and Bradley Cooper. Hogan aka Terry Gene Bollea will act as a consultant on the movie.
At 65, Hogan has had a few dramas plaguing his personal life but the film is said to omit that part of his story and concentrate on his rise to fame in the ring, going as far back as 1977. The project is being described as an origin story of the Hulkster and Hulkamania.

Let me tell ya something Mean Gene! The biopic for, arguably, the world's most influential wrestler of all time has found its leading man, brother! More within...
For much of the 80s and into the 90s, the iconic wrestler known as Hulk Hogan graced our television sets, as the hero of the WWF and our childhood. With him leg dropping opponents like Andre the Giant on WWF, appearing on Nightly Talk Shows, and main eventing Saturday morning cartoons, Hulkamania was indeed running wild all around the world, as the Hulkster became a household name. While he remains a legend to us, he wasn't always so. At one time, Hulk Hogan was known by his given name, Terry Gene Bollea, and spent years grinding through the Florida wrestling circuit, until a man named Vincent Kennedy McMahon took over his father's wrestling promotion and set the world on fire with Hogan (Bollea) as his star.
