- College football All-American at Army (West Point) in the mid-1940s.
- Winner of the 1945 Heisman Memorial Trophy as the outstanding US college football player.
- Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959.
- The nickname "Mr Inside" was earned during his football career: his specialty was running through the middle of the line. It was contrasted with the style of Glenn Davis, known as "Mr. Outside", whose success was in running around the ends.

- Inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
- Inducted into the U.S. Military Academy Army Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 (inaugural class).
- Interred in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
- Inducted into the St. Stanislaus College Hall of Fame. The institution is a college preparatory school for boys.
- Inducted into the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame in 1917.
