Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane have been tapped to star in a new roommate sitcom ‘Mid-Century Modern,’ which is being described as like the classic comedy series ‘The Golden Girls.’
The multi-cam series for Hulu will be executive produced by Ryan Murphy and created by ‘Will & Grace’s’ Max Mutchnick and David Kohan.
Bomer is said to be playing the role similar to the ditzy Rose-like character, played by Betty White in the original ‘Golden Girls,’ with Lane taking on the Dorothy (Bea Arthur) of the bunch. Linda Lavin will play Lane’s mother, a la the original Sophia.
Also in news – Will Smith set for sci-fi thriller ‘Resistor’
Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother. A successful businessman with one foot in retirement, Bunny is forever in search of love, but he first has to be convinced he’s worthy of it.

A gay Golden Girls-style sitcom is in the works starring Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane. This will be coming from the brilliant mind of Ryan Murphy and the creators of Will & Grace, Max Mutchnik and David Kohan. So, what else is there to know about the upcoming comedy? Keep reading for more details.
Gay Golden Girls-Style Sitcom In Works Starring Matt Bomer
Over thirty years after it went off the air, The Golden Girls remains one of the most popular sitcoms to date. Set in Miami, it starred Betty White, Bea Arthur, Rue McLanahan, and Estelle Getty. They were four divorced or widowed women living together, experiencing life as fifty-somethings, with the exception of Getty. Her character, Sophia Petrillo was wise and in her eighties but still liked a good time. They went on dates, lost jobs, lost children, faced money problems, had AIDS tests, and so much more.

Ron Nyswaner, the writer behind such iconic queer stories as “Philadelphia,” was effusive about his star of “Fellow Travelers,” Matt Bomer, at the IndieWire Honors ceremony on Thursday, June 6.
Nyswaner called Bomer “one of our greatest living actors,” and upon jointly accepting the IndieWire Honors Wavelength Award with his lead, he acknowledged that he and Bomer really do share a special wavelength. Bomer was also an executive producer on “Fellow Travelers,” and he said Bomer was an “EP in every way.”
“Because I had Matt’s trust, I could pitch things in the writers’ room,” Nyswaner said. He proceeded to map out Episode 7 of “Fellow Travelers,” in which he would ask Bomer to be largely naked on an island while on a lot of drugs and having a threesome where they “really go at it and screw really hard” and then try and kill one of the guys while suffering a nervous breakdown.

The 2003 film ‘X2’ garnered high praise upon its release for its acting, action sequences, and storyline. Critics lauded its tightly crafted script, strong performances, and ambitious scope. Empire hailed it as the pinnacle of comic book movies at the time, and Wizard ranked its ending among the most memorable cliffhangers in cinema history.
The film was notable for its themes of inclusivity, resonating with outcasts, teens, gays, and minorities. Alan Cumming echoed this sentiment, describing the movie as “one of the gayest” he has ever been a part of.
Cumming recently promoted an upcoming reality competition titled ‘The Traitor,’ where he takes on the role of host. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he confirmed suspicions that fans have harbored for some time.

The sitcom landscape has been unusually barren in recent years, as networks and streamers alike have demonstrated a strong preference for dramas, especially those involving first responders.
Leave it to always-adventurous Ryan Murphy and the innovative minds at Hulu to head an entirely different, yet refreshingly familiar direction.
The streamer has ordered a pilot for Mid-Century Modern, a sitcom centering around three best friends -- described by Deadline as "gay gentlemen of a certain age" -- who decide to share a home in retirement, a la The Golden Girls.
Lane will play Bunny Schneiderman, and Linda Lavin -- star of the beloved '70s sitcom Alice -- will play his mother, Sybil, with whom he shares a home in Palm Springs.
The already complex relationship between mother and son will be further complicated when two of Bunny's friends move in.
And wackiness is almost certain to ensue.

Rest easy, Resident Alien fans. The show has officially been renewed for a fourth season!
It was a close call at NBCU about the show's future, so this is excellent news.
The big difference is that the show will no longer air on Syfy but on the sister NBCU site, USA Network.
We all wish USA's Blue Sky programming were still going today.
They've been out of scripted originals for a couple of years, but with the announcement of The Rainmaker last month, they're back in business.

Deadline reported earlier this year that the Resident Alien renewal was questionable, and they're breaking the news about it today, just as they expected by jumping networks.
At the time, they also said there would be a significant budget reduction, so when we return, things may not be the same in Patience, Colorado.

The creators of Will & Grace and Ryan Murphy are teaming for a Hulu project — which is already attracting a top-flight cast.
The Disney-owned streamer has ordered a pilot for a multi-camera comedy titled Mid-Century Modern, written by Will & Grace’s David Kohan and Max Mutchnick. Matt Bomer, Nathan Lane and Linda Lavin are set to star in the show, which reads as something of a gender-swapped take on The Golden Girls. Murphy is an executive producer, and James Burrows is set to direct.
The logline: “The series follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper. As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it...

It’s official: Resident Alien has been renewed for a fourth season at a new NBCUniversal home, USA Network, moving from cable sibling Syfy.
As Deadline reported exclusively last month, the quirky sci-fi comedy-drama was not likely to continue on Syfy, with a move to USA as its most viable option to get a fourth season with a significant budget reduction. The transfer gives USA a second new scripted series, joining the recently picked up legal drama The Rainmaker as the once-thriving original scripted brand is returning to the arena with a slate influenced by the network’s glorious “Blue Sky” era that spanned most of the 2000s and early 2010s.
With the relocation to USA, NBCU is looking to expose Resident Alien to a broader audience, a crossover potential the series’ successful run on Netflix hinted at. Season 1 made it to the global streamer’s Top 10 of English-language series...

Showrunner Ryan Murphy has a type when it comes to casting, and that type is guys who look like Superman. It's no surprise, then, that the new Superman will be played by David Corenswet, alum of Murphy's shows "Hollywood" and "The Politician." Yet Corenswet isn't the first Murphy favorite to come close to the role of Clark Kent. In the mid-2000s, Matt Bomer had a three-picture deal with Warner Bros. to be the new Man of Steel.
Speaking on the Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Bomer was asked by host Scott Feinberg whether he could confirm or correct a rumor that he left the soap opera "Guiding Light" because of an opportunity for a certain major movie role. Bomer replied that this was "partly right," elaborating:

Henry Cavill’s role as Superman has found a resurgence of fans after he was replaced by David Corenswet in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman. The actor played the role in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and went on to reprise his role in subsequent sequels. Though he was slated to return, he had to depart from the character after James Gunn’s reboot.
While Cavill had bad luck with Superman, another actor from the Dceu faced a terrible experience after auditioning for the role. Matt Bomer, who is known for his role in White Collar, reportedly auditioned for JJ Abrams’ unmade project Superman: Flyby. However, Bomer claimed that he lost the role after multiple auditions due to his sexual orientation.

When IndieWire Honors host Alex Edelman took the stage at Citizen News in Hollywood to kick off the show, his monologue perfectly encapsulated the fun, laid back approach that powers the biannual ceremony honoring creative independence. (Watch the video of Edelman on IndieWire’s red carpet above.)
“Is this the fanciest award show? No! But it will be one of the shortest,” he said. “If you found street parking, you won’t need to refill the meter!”
Edelman went on to introduce the esteemed group of TV artists being honored, which included
Carol Burnett, Quinta Brunson, Issa López, Lulu Wang, Riley Keough, Dakota Fanning, Francesca Sloane, John Mulaney, Fisher Stevens, and the duos of Matt Bomer and Ron Nyswaner, and Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski. And while he heaped plenty of praise on the group’s artistic achievements, he also had a laugh about one of his own past encounters with an unnamed honoree.

Emmy-winning producer and director Daniel Minahan wanted the period queer love story of “Fellow Travelers” to feel contemporary. The Showtime limited series, based on the novel by Thomas Mallon, chronicles the decades-long love story between two men, beginning in the McCarthy era of the fifties through the AIDS crisis of the eighties. Minahan directed the show’s first two episodes and was one its executive producers. “We weren’t going to make it as if we were making an old fashioned movie,” he says in a recent chat with Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I wanted it to feel contemporary, and the story itself is so relevant to today that I wanted people to be able to say, ‘Oh my God. That’s what’s happening now.'”

Actor Matt Bomer said he had been a finalist to play Superman in the early 2000s, claiming he was denied the role once he was outed as gay.
“I went in on a call for Superman, and then it turned into a four-month audition experience,” he said on the Hollywood Reporter‘s “Awards Chatter” podcast on Monday.
“I was auditioning again and again and again and flying out to New York and doing chemistry reads and flying out to L.A. and doing chemistry readers, back to New York, flying back to L.A. to do a screen test, and it looked like I was the director’s choice for the role.”
Bomer said he was confident about starring in the D.C. Comics movie because he “signed a three-picture deal at Warner Bros.” at the time. He was let go from the CBS soap opera Guiding Light while auditioning for the role.

To say that audiences were thrilled to learn of the White Collar revival would be an understatement. With so many reboots, remakes, and revivals of shows falling flat with fans, White Collar viewers seem to trust the team behind this one so much that the news was met with nothing but sheer excitement.
Now that viewers know who's coming back, but have no idea what to expect from the show, they're coming up with more and more ideas and guesses about what the new seasons of White Collar might bring. Here are 8 of the most popular from the r/whitecollar subreddit.
Peter and Neal’s Banter
One of the best things about White Collar was the chemistry between the cast. The banter felt effortless, and viewers hope the same can be accomplished just as easily 10 years from now.

Jude Law may have steely blue eyes but he wasn’t quite ready to play the Man of Steel himself, confirming that while he had the chance to portray Superman, he just couldn’t find the inner strength to do so.
Speaking with The Playlist, Jude Law said he was a serious contender to play the DC superhero for Brett Ratner’s scheduled movie, titled Superman: Flyby. “This is true. Yeah. And there was a process of flirtation going on. And I always resisted because it just felt like [off]. And I know you can say, ‘Well, but you played Yonn-Rogg and Dumbledore!’ It just felt like a step too far.”
Jude Law said he even did costume tests, although he never got a chance to actually try on Christopher Reeve’s Superman get-up. “It was kind of like it was more metallic. Anyway, I tried on and I looked in...

Superman is one of the most widely portrayed superheroes, appearing in numerous TV shows, movies, and animated media. Many actors have taken on the mantle or voiced the iconic character. However, countless others vied for the role and never secured it, for reasons ranging from legitimate concerns to outright discrimination.
In a recent interview on The Hollywood Reporter’s Award Chatter podcast, Matt Bomer shared a surprising revelation about losing the role of ‘Superman’ in J.J. Abrams’ project that never came to fruition.
According to Bomer, he was dismissed from consideration for the role after his homosexuality became public knowledge. He highlights that this occurred during a period when one’s sexual orientation could still be used against them, particularly when auditioning for the role of a revered cultural icon like Superman.

Jude Law had a "flirtation" with playing Superman. The 51-year-old actor confirmed he was in the running to portray Clark Kent and his alter ego in the early 2000s for the ultimately-scrapped J.J. Abrams-penned movie called 'Superman: Flyby', but he felt the project was a "step to far" for him.Speaking in an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast, Jude said when asked about rumours he was up for Superman: "So this is true. Yeah. And there was a process of flirtation going on.“And I always resisted because it just felt like [off]. And I know you can say, ‘Well, but you played Yonn-Rogg and Dumbledore!’ It just felt like a step too far.“And it was when Brett Ratner was going to direct, I think."Jude even tried on the character's iconic suit in a bid to "change [his] mind" but he couldn't "sell" himself into the role.

Jude Law turned down Superman in the early 2000s because “it just felt off,” which he knows sounds ridiculous considering he would later agree to star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and to play Dumbledore in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise. The actor confirmed he was courted to play the Man of Steel in Brett Ratner’s failed Superman project, which was announced in 2002 and based on an iteration of J.J. Abrams’ “Superman: Flyby” script.
“So this is true. Yeah. And there was a process of flirtation going on,” Law said on The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast. “And I always resisted because it just felt like [off]. And I know you can say, ‘Well, but you played Yonn-Rogg and Dumbledore!’ It just felt like a step too far.”
“It was when Brett Ratner was going to direct, I think. And they didn’t have a script, if I remember rightly,” Law continued.

No actor has ever played Batman for as long as Kevin Conroy did. Starting off in 1992 in Batman: The Animated Series, he was the voice for the character for over three decades. He was one of the most respected and talented figures in the world of DC, and fans continue to regard him as a legend, even after his passing.

Many actors have come close to playing Superman over the years, but we admittedly forgot that British actor Jude Law was once among them.
For those who may not know, Superman: Flyby was written by J.J. Abrams and set out to deliver a fresh take on the Man of Steel's origin story. Krypton was going to factor heavily into proceedings, with Lex Luthor now a government agent obsessed with UFOs and Lois Lane intent on exposing him to the public.
According to various leaks, Superman was set to square off with a group of villainous Kryptonians, ultimately dying and being sent to Kryptonian heaven to meet his father, Jor-El, before being resurrected. As you'd expect, Kal-El would return to save the day, only for a cliffhanger ending to feature him returning to his home planet.

As we know, Matt Bomer was a finalist to play the Man of Steel back in the 2000s in an early incarnation of the project that would ultimately become Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, and the actor believes he missed out on the role for one very specific reason.
We had heard that Bomer came very close to landing the part, but it sounds like he had all-but signed on to play the iconic DC Comics hero in "Superman: Flyby," which was going to be helmed by J.J. Abrams.
“I went in on a cattle call for Superman, and then it turned into a one-month audition experience where I was auditioning again and again and again,” the Doom Patrol star explained during an interview with THR. “It looked like I was the director’s choice for the role. This is a very early iteration of Superman written by J.J.

There are plenty of actors out there who have either auditioned to be Superman or were picked for a film that never got made. Hell, we just talked about one such situation earlier today with Matt Bomer. But before Bomer was up for the role, there was a version of a “Superman” film directed by Brett Ratner. And at the time, the studio really wanted Jude Law to put on the cape.

A lot of the time, fans are really skeptical of actors after they’re cast for a superhero role in a film. The biggest question is– Do they look the part. And in the case of Matt Bomer, he definitely looks the part for Superman. But according to the actor, even though he made it really far into an audition to play Superman years ago and was seemingly the top choice for the role, something ridiculous prevented him from landing the role.

Matt Bomer is speaking out against what he sees as the “weaponization” of sexuality in Hollywood.
Bomer revealed during The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast that he allegedly lost out on landing the lead role for axed DC film “Superman: Flyby” after being outed as gay.
“It looked like I was the director’s choice for the role,” Bomer said. “I signed a three-picture deal at Warner Bros.”
When asked on the podcast whether his sexual orientation affected his casting, Bomer said, “Yeah, that’s my understanding. That was a time in the industry when something like that could still really be weaponized against you. How, and why, and who [outed me], I don’t know.”
Bomer even exited CBS soap opera “Guiding Light” amid the audition process for “Superman: Flyby.”

Nathan Lane came out of the closet to his mother and two brothers at age 21, and says he marched in Pride parades as far back as the late 1970s. But it wasn’t until he started playing gay roles and saw his career explode thanks to Mike Nichols’ 1996 film The Birdcage that he experienced rampant speculation about his sexuality.
“I certainly wish I had been braver at the time,” Lane said while accepting a career achievement trophy during the LGBTQ+ Celebration of Cinema & Television at Fairmont Century Plaza on Friday. “Like when Oprah Winfrey on her show asked me why I was so good at all that girly stuff in The Birdcage. If I could go back in time, the answer I wish I had given is: The reason I’m good at all that stuff is because I’m a wonderful actor but if you’re asking me if I’m gay,...

Matt Bomer, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is a talented and dashing actor and producer. Bomer made his name on the USA drama series White Collar (2009-2014) and in films such as 2012’s Magic Mike. He later won Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards and was nominated for an Emmy for his turn in the 2014 HBO movie adaptation of Larry Kramer’s play The Normal Heart. Most recently, he has garnered some of the best reviews of his career for his portrayal of a closeted State Dept. employee in a decades-spanning secret relationship with another man on the 2023 Showtime limited series Fellow Travelers, for which he has already won a Peabody Award and been nominated for Golden Globe, SAG, Critics Choice and People’s Choice awards.

Former USA Network drama “White Collar” was a basic-cable relic before it was added to the Netflix library on April 1, 2024. But like “Suits” before it, another USA drama that found new life when it wound up on Netflix, “White Collar” has since turned up on Nielsen’s Top 10 Streaming Overall (original and acquired series) list — twice.
“White Collar,” a Fox-produced show, has been on Hulu (because Disney’s Fox acquisition closed in 2019) since December 2018. But until Netflix nabbed the co-exclusive rights this spring, the series had never been a factor in streaming. The show, which ran from 2009-2014 on USA Network, was pretty much an afterthought. Just like “Suits.”
But now, like “Suits,” “White Collar” is getting a sequel series.
“We’re gonna reboot. I’m writing the script,” series creator Jeff Eastin said at Variety’s TV FYC Fest. “It’s the original cast.”
So that includes Eastin’s fellow panelists Matt Bomer,...

Turns out, the one thing everybody gathered for The Hollywood Reporter‘s annual Drama Actor Emmy roundtable has in common is the fact that they’ve all lied to land a job.
“All the time,” jokes Nicholas Galitzine, of both Starz’s Mary & George and Prime Video’s Red, White & Royal Blue, when the question is first posed.
Fellow Travelers‘ Matt Bomer is similarly quick to confess. “I absolutely figure skate, I play ice hockey. Rollerblade. Yes, years of experience,” he says through laughter.
The lies vary, of course; as do the consequences. But all six of the men gathered on this April afternoon at the Georgian Hotel cop to at least one lie — and perhaps unsurprisingly, it rarely ended well. Clive Owens (Monsieur Spade, A Murder at the End of the World) said he could ride a horse — a lie that came back to bite him when...

The cast of Will Trent has worked hard solving cases and bettering themselves, and the title character, Will Trent, had a rough year.
The main cast has remained mostly the same since the procedural began in January 2023.
While Will Trent was an instant hit, Season 2 was even better. The series explored the backstories of each main character, giving the series a twist, especially since the younger versions of Will, Angie, and Amanda were so realistic.
The talented cast makes us cry, smile, and laugh each new season as we root for them.
This cast is unique because some have been friends for years, which shows in their on-screen connections.

Starting this particular June weekend of Pride events off with a bang was Friday night’s first annual Critics Choice Association’s Celebration Of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television, an awards gala that packed the main ballroom of L.A.’s Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel with each table’s settings sporting a rainbow pride flag among other festival decorations. The lively event brought out a host of honorees and starry presenters delivering lots of stirring and heartfelt remarks. Comedian and Actress Sherry Cola hosted the expertly paced presentation.

The mix of actors, showrunners, directors, costumers, production designers, composers, and VFX artists in attendance at IndieWire’s Consider This FYC event, produced in partnership with Paramount, reflected the unique blend of skillsets that have to come together to create a hit show. Artists from properties as varied as “Star Trek,” “Frasier,” and “Lawmen: Bass Reeves” to “Fellow Travelers,” “Colin from Accounts,” and “A Gentleman in Moscow” convened at The Grove in Los Angeles to discuss the painstaking process of delivering the most authentic possible shows to their audiences. And while no two stories were the same, everyone seemed to agree that great art happens at the intersection of extensive preparation and serendipitous timing. While television had been a part of each past IndieWire Honors celebration, the medium took center stage on the evening of Thursday, June 6, with an event that celebrated the creators and stars of such well-regarded shows as “Abbott Elementary,” “Expats,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
