When the ex-wife of Alabama patriarch Jim Caldwell (Robert Duvall) dies in late 60s England her new family - including wizened widower John Hurt - honour her best wishes for a funeral in the Deep South. However, they face a mixed reception from a the Caldwells, incuding Billy Bob Thornton's damaged ex-naval pilot, Kevin Bacon's war hero-turned-hippy and their vivacious, unhappily married sister. Bob Thornton, who directs, has put together a genuinely hilarious culture clash comedy shot through with steely themes of loyalty and love.

Last summer, the first trailer for the Berlin Film Festival selected film Jayne Mansfield's Car from director and actor Billy Bob Thornton arrived, but some issues with the copyright for music caused the trailer to get taken down. Now the official trailer is here since the film is slated for release on VOD later this month and limited theaters in September. The film follows two clashing families as they are brought together by the death of a woman who was married, first to the Southern American Jim Caldwell (Robert Duvall) and then to the British Kingsley Bedford (John Hurt). The film features a cast including Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick, Ray Stevenson and Shawnee Smith, but we're not sure if it works. Watch! Here's the release trailer for Billy Bob Thornton's Jayne Mansfield's Car, originally from Yahoo: Jayne Mansfield's Car is directed by award-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton, who previously directed films like Sling Blade,...

You had better brush up on your knowledge of expressionist cinema, film noir, Greek mythology, psychoanalysis, as well as Guy Maddin’s oeuvre and biography, before heading out to go see his newest fiction feature! Keyhole is a highly complex, multilayered construction that is anything but easy to cope with on first viewing (which probably helps to account for the fleeing audience members). “Remember, Ulysses, remember!” is the key phrase to unlocking this journey deep into this black and white, psychologically-charged construction of ideas. While some aspects will initially leave you lost and puzzled – at least that’s what happened to me – Maddin’s sense of undeniable suspense, aesthetic appeal and composition are what ultimately make this a strong cinematic experience regardless of whether or not you’re able to unpack it in one viewing.

Billy Bob Thornton returns to directing with an intelligent, polished character drama set in the American south
Billy Bob Thornton has been absent from the director's chair for over a decade; still burned, it has to be said, from the debacle of the Cormac McCarthy adaptation All the Pretty Horses in 2000, when he was forced to cut a third of his film's running time. He's chosen his re-entry with some care: a multi-character ensemble drama, set in the American south in 1969, with firecracker roles for Kevin Bacon, Robert Duvall and Robert Patrick, as well as Thornton himself.
Duvall is Jim Caldwell, the paterfamilias of a small-town clan: Bacon, Patrick and Thornton his neatly delineated male offspring. Bacon is the rebel hippy, anti-war, dope-smoking, commune-inhabiting; Patrick the square straight-arrow, destined to follow in daddy's footsteps; Thornton the oddball outsider, bearing more than a trace of the actor's own well-publicised obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The best thing one can say about "Jayne Mansfield's Car," Billy Bob Thornton's loopy family drama about a group of eccentric American southerners in 1969, is that it's not quite as bad as it looks. A far cry from "Sling Blade," the crowning achievement of Thornton's otherwise non-career as a filmmaker, this tame exercise never quite jives and sometimes just bombs with one-note melodrama, but always maintains Thornton's conviction about the material. Set in Morrison, Ala., "Jayne Mansfield's Car" follows a pair of families brought into unlikely union by a single offscreen death. Aging car-crash investigator Jim Caldwell (Robert Duvall) learns that his estranged ex-wife has died of cancer, and her newer U.K. relatives plan to respect her wishes by returning to her hometown for the funeral. The timing couldn't be worse: Jim already must deal with existing tensions between his grown sons, including stoner...

Billy Bob Thornton will be giving movie fans an intimate look at his tough childhood in new movie Jayne Mansfield's Car - he modelled his onscreen dad, Robert Duvall, after his real-life father.
The dark family comedy centres on three World War II veteran brothers and their struggle to connect with their cold and cruel parent, Jim Caldwell.
Thornton directs and stars in the project he wrote, as one of the siblings, and the Bad Santa star admits he based Duvall's character on his own emotionless dad, William Raymond.
Speaking to reporters at a press conference following the movie's premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Monday, he said, "My father was a very violent Irishman and so there was abuse both verbal and physical in our household. He was a Korean war veteran in the navy and he was a very intense guy who I don't think I ever had a conversation with."
And scriptwriter Thornton reveals scenes in the film, in which Duvall takes his grandson to car crashes to survey the wreckage, are also based on truth.
He adds, "He (my father) would take my brother and I... to car wrecks and he would stand there and smoke Lucky Strikes (cigarettes) and stare at the car wreck for two hours while my brother and I were like, 'Why are we here?' That was how he connected with us.
"Through all of that, through beatings and no communication or anything when I grew up, I realised that I understood my father and I loved my father."...

It’s been eight long months since any of us heard news on Jayne Mansfield’s Car — or, Billy Bob Thornton‘s first directorial effort in ten years — but a Berlinale premiere is now upon us, and an update (naturally) has to come in. To coincide with this potentially exciting occasion, the festival’s site (via ThePlaylist) has posted a photo that shows off the wide-ranging, period-dressed cast.
As you can see above, Car stars the director, Robert Duvall, John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Ray Stevenson, Robert Patrick, Frances O’Connor, Marshall Allman, Shawnee Smith, Katherine Lanasa, John Patrick Amedori, and some other performers neither ThePlaylist nor I can manage to recognize. No matter the individual identities, however, they all look “right” for the time and place — which we’ve previously heard is 1968 Alabama, the former of which accounts for Bacon‘s hippie attire — so let’s hope this authenticity proves emblematic of the entire picture.

Rob Lowe has been many things during his acting career. He has been a heartthrob, a pariah, a villain in Wayne's World and then a leading man once again. He may be adding NFL reporter to his resume.
On Wednesday afternoon, the star of television shows such as "Parks and Recreation" and "The West Wing" tweeted that his "people" were telling him that Peyton Manning is set to retire from the NFL.
In response to Lowe's tweets, NFL Network analyst Rich Eisen responded.
But Eisen was far from the only person on Twitter to notice Lowe's unexpected piece of NFL personnel news. Here are some of the best reactions.
Although the source of this rumor is unexpected, such a tweet by a veteran NFL reporter such as Adam Schefter or Jay Glazer wouldn't have seemed entirely out of the blue. After all, Manning missed the entire 2011 NFL season due to...
