Just two years after winning a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor Emmy for “Mare of Easttown,” Evan Peters currently has a strong shot at conquering the corresponding lead category as the star of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” By succeeding on this outing, he would not only maintain his perfect acting Emmys record, but would also follow Ed Flanders as the second recipient of both possible limited program performance prizes.
Given the overall strength of this year’s Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor lineup, Peters’s potential win won’t come easily, if at all. The only other previous Emmy nominee in the mix is Kumail Nanjiani (“Welcome to Chippendales”), with most of the slots being filled by well-known first-timers Taron Egerton (“Black Bird”), Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”), Michael Shannon (“George & Tammy”), and Steven Yeun (“Beef”).

This story about “Welcome to Chippendales” stars Kumail Nanjiani and Annaleigh Ashford first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine. All actor interviews in that issue were conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began.
All four main cast members of a limited series about the rise and fall of a male strip club mogul were nominated for Emmys, making “Welcome to Chippendales” one of the big shocks of this year’s noms. Kumail Nanjiani and Annaleigh Ashford tell us how they did it.

Kumail Nanjiani was just Emmy nominated for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for his searing dramatic performance in the Hulu limited series “Welcome to Chippendales.” But the news came at a peculiar time, as the Emmy nods were announced the day before SAG-AFTRA went on strike, joining WGA members on the picket line.
“I was extremely surprised,” Nanjiani told Variety that morning, during those last moments before SAG-AFTRA members were no longer able to talk to press about their projects. “And also thrilled because my co-stars Juliette Lewis and Annaleigh Ashford and Murray Bartlett were recognized. And our costume designers. So, it’s been this pretty good morning … on the eve of a historic strike.”
Nanjiani spoke to the Variety Awards Circuit podcast about his nomination, what convinced him to do “Welcome to Chippendales” and his sheer ubiquity on the screen. But first, on the Awards Circuit Roundtable,...

Murray Bartlett received not one but two Emmy nominations this year. One was widely expected, in Best Drama Guest Actor for “The Last of Us,” but the other one, perhaps not as much. He was nominated for “Welcome to Chippendales” in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor, the category he won last year for “The White Lotus.” And he’ll make history if he wins the award again.
Another victory would make Bartlett the first person to win the category in consecutive years. There is, unsurprisingly, not a ton of back-to-back champs in a category recognizing one-offs like limited and anthology series and TV movies. Since the category was formalized in 1975, Beau Bridges is the only one who’s won it twice for “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom” in 1993 and “The Second Civil War” in 1997. Michael Moriarty, who triumphed in 2002 for “James Dean,” comes...

Gold Derby can exclusively reveal the episodes selected by the seven nominees for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor as their 2023 Emmys episode submissions.
SEECan Steven Yeun ‘Beef’ up Best Movie/Limited Actor at the Emmys over Evan Peters?
Murray Bartlett won this category just last year for his performance in season one of “The White Lotus.” This year he’s nominated twice: Best Drama Guest Actor for “The Last of Us” and Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actor for “Welcome to Chippendales.” In “Chippendales,” he plays Nick De Noia, the closeted choreographer who clashes with Chippendales founder Steve Banerjee (Best Movie/Limited Actor nominee Kumail Nanjiani) before Nick is murdered. Bartlett submitted for Emmy consideration “Leeches,” the fifth episode of the eight-episode series in which Nick opens a successful Chippendales in New York City and becomes the face of the business on the talk show circuit.

“Welcome to Chippendales” is many things – a true-crime, rags-to-riches cautionary tale set against a tide of American cultural change, for starters – but the eight-part Hulu limited series is above all a love letter to the prop masters, art directors and costume designers who supply our favorite big- and small-screen stories with their immersive power. While the hit ordered on Nick De Noia (Murray Bartlett) by Chippendales founder Steve Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani) is intriguing enough, the show’s procedural-like approach to the business of stagecraft is what makes it absolutely engrossing.
We meet Indian immigrant Steve Banerjee in 1979 Los Angeles at the gas station where he works, illuminated by an all-too perfectly garish yellow sign. During a recent Gold Derby video interview, senior editor Rob Licuria spoke in-depth with Murray Bartlett (“Welcome to Chippendales”) about his Hulu limited series, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmys. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
In “Welcome to Chippendales,” Bartlett follows up his Emmy-winning “The White Lotus” role with his acclaimed portrayal of the late choreographer/director Nick De Noia. The eight-episode show was created by Robert Siegel (“Pam & Tommy”) and inspired by the book “Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders” by K. Scot Macdonald and Patrick MontesDeOca.
“It’s very seductive to play a character like Nick De Noia,” the actor explained in our webchat. “He’s a choreographer and he was very larger than life.” Bartlett revealed that “the joy of it” was “being able to take a character that might seem larger than life and make them relatable … that’s what...

“To have two shows that I’m actually a part of,” sighs Quentin Plair in our recent webchat, adding that “it’s really been kind of this really eye-opening and a beautiful and validating process that is still going on right now.” Plair is having a real moment this season, co-starring in not one, but two acclaimed roles in two very different but equally high-profile series — playing an exotic dancer in the glitzy and tawdry semi-autobiographical “Welcome to Chippendales” and an emotionally numb father and husband in the intimate comedy/drama “Tiny Beautiful Things,” both streaming on Hulu. “Maybe people see me as a guy heading for an untimely ending,” jokes Emmy winner Murray Bartlett about three of his most recent roles in which his characters have either been accidentally stabbed to death (Armond in Season 1 of “The White Louts”), murdered in cold blood (Nick in “Welcome to Chippendales”) or tragically died in the arms of his life partner (Frank in “The Last of Us”). For our recent webchat he adds, “There is a silver lining, I guess, for me,” he smiles. “I don’t know what it is, but I’m not complaining, because it’s allowed me to do some really great stuff, and not have to stay alive as one character to stop me from playing the next!” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

A running gag on the Hulu limited series “Welcome to Chippendales” was Nick De Noia (Murray Bartlett) telling people that he has won not one but two Emmys for choreographing “Unicorn Tales.” Now Bartlett can pick up a second Emmy this year in the very category he won last year for “The White Lotus,” Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor. And if that happens, he’ll break new ground as the first person to win the category two years in a row.
The list of people who’ve won Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor more than once is very tiny in general. Since the category was established in 1975, only Beau Bridges has won it multiple times, prevailing in 1993 for “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom” and 1997 for “The Second Civil War.” You could count Michael Moriarty, but he only won this specific category,...

It may never have occurred to you to delve into the origin story of the man who kickstarted the male stripping troupe The Chippendales, an innovative organisation that has led to the popularisation of the likes of Magic Mike these days. But my goodness if you do, there’s plenty to unpack. This new series called ‘Welcome to Chippendales’, which this launched on on Disney+, takes us back to the start-up of the organisation, led by Indian immigrant Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee, and what transpires is quite hard to believe.

There’s substance underneath all the cocaine and thongs,” says Welcome to Chippendales creator Robert Siegel. The writer/producer behind Pam & Tommy, Hulu’s 2021 dramatisation of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee’s sex tape scandal, has turned his attention to the wild story behind the establishment of America’s first male strip club. The eight-episode drama – out now on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK – follows Kumail Nanjiani as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the Indian entrepreneur who founded Chippendales, as he grasps for the American dream. Banerjee’s hubris, however, ultimately led to destruction, murder, and suicide.
The story began in 1975 with Bombay-born Banerjee purchasing a failing discotheque in West Hollywood, which he intended to turn into the city’s first backgammon club. He named the venue “Destiny II” – there was no Destiny I but, as Nanjiani’s Banerjee explains in the series, “The II implies it’s a sequel,...

Kumail Nanjiani has broken out in a huge way over the past several years, garnering an Oscar nomination for his The Big Sick screenplay and even joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Eternals. Now he has a taste for playing more villains, but may be stopped by the force of Hollywood.

Banerjee would end up pleading guilty to racketeering, attempted arson and murder for hire, including that of producer Nick De Noia (played by Murray Bartlett in Welcome to Chippendales). It was in his cell that Banerjee hanged himself in 1994.

Even though we knew it was leading here, it was still a shock to see how everything played out.
I would say Welcome to Chippendales Season 1 Episode 7 was Steve's official downfall, but he's been falling for a while. With each passing year, he became increasingly obsessed with a need to prove his worth and relevance, and when things started to fall apart, he took the most drastic measures to pull himself up again.
But it's hard to imagine the fallout was exactly what Steve wanted.
It never had to end like this.
Steve was successful; for all his shortcomings, and there were many, he was very much a significant part of getting Chippendales to the heights it reached. He wasn't just some investor or a "boss" in name only. He was there every day, working to sustain a successful business, but he could never get out of his own way.

“Welcome to Chippendales” details the rise and fall of the male exotic dancing troupe, as told through the tale of creator Somen “Steve” Banerjee. And yet, little is known about Banerjee’s wife, Irene, and her origin story. So, when Annaleigh Ashford signed on to play the loving partner of the immigrant entrepreneur-turned-millionaire criminal on the Hulu series, she knew she had a tough job ahead.
Having appeared on Ryan Murphy’s “American Crime Story” as Paula Jones, Ashford says she knew the responsibility of portraying a real life figure in history. But without much character background to research for Irene, the Tony Award winner was left to dive deeper into the historical context to imagine Irene’s general motive.
In Episode 6, “February 31,” the series follows the rising tension between Steve (played by Kumail Nanjiani) and his business partner Nick De Noia (Murray Bartlett). “As Steve’s financial woes mount,...

Jeffery’s replacement was taken off stage and informed that there had been a hit put out on him and he was in danger. To this day, Jeffery doesn’t know if that hit was meant for him.
It’s one of the many ways in which Jeffery — who is now an actor in Los Angeles and spoke to IndieWire via Zoom — confirmed that while Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales” seems implausible and extravagant, it’s also shockingly accurate. Jeffery worked at Chippendales, both at the club and in the touring company, from the early 1980s until 1992 — right around when “excuse my expression: The shit hit the fan,” per Jeffery.

Welcome to Chippendales Season 1 Episode 5 was a whirlwind.
The transition to New York should have given Steve and Nick the space and time to quell their brewing animosity. The money was flowing, and Chippendales had never been hotter, yet somehow being hundreds of miles away from one another only worsened their rivalry.
And by the end of the hour, we start to see what Steve is truly capable of.
New York City in the 80s was the place to be, and in opposition to the Los Angeles brand, Chippendales could fly differently once it opened its doors in the big apple.
Considering Steve's struggles with letting go of control, it's a wonder he enjoys what the new club has to offer, especially considering it's a Nick production.

Photo: ‘Welcome to Chippendales’ ‘Welcome to the Chippendales’ is a fiery new original series on Hulu, created by Robert Spiegel and starring Kumail Nanjiani, Murray Barlett, and Juliette Lewis. It’s about the disturbing true story involving the beginnings of the Chippendales, perhaps the most famous male dance group in the world. Before going into this series, I only knew about the famous group in the abstract: who they were, and the dances they provided. However, I didn’t know about the creator Somen Banerjee, the Emmy Award-winning choreographer, and director Nick De Noia, and the murders of multiple parties involved. Lack of knowledge beforehand added to my enjoyment, as I feel like I’m learning a lot about a part of entertainment history that is equal parts important and bizarre. Similarly, Hulu’s new drama Welcome to Chippendales gets a significant boost midway through the premiere when Murray Bartlett shows up as the Emmy-winning director with Big Ideas who quickly partners with Kumail Nanjiani’s Somen “Steve” Banerjee.

Hulu's new miniseries "Welcome to Chippendales" tells the story of the rise and fall of Somen "Steve" Banerjee, the man behind the Chippendales empire, and the extreme measures he took to keep his business, recognized as the fist male strip club, at the top.
During his career as the manager of Chippendales, Banerjee partnered up with Nick De Noia, a producer and choreographer whose edge brought Chippendales to international acclaim. But creative differences and frequent disputes with Banerjee ultimately led to him branching off and starting his own Chippendales company.
The expansion of the Chippendales empire under De Noia, however, ended abruptly when he was murdered in April 1987. The circumstances of his death would remain a mystery for years, until a hitman linked to Banerjee came forward with information connecting the businessman to De Noia's murder.
Here is the unsettling story of De Noia's murder.

Here is the unsettling story of De Noia's murder.

Hulu's "Welcome to Chippendales" crime drama depicts the true life story of Somen "Steve" Banerjee (portrayed by Kumail Nanjiani), the Indian immigrant who founded the multimillion dollar global male stripping empire that swept the nation in the '80s and '90s.
The eight-part limited series from "Pam & Tommy" creator Robert Siegel centers on Banerjee's rise and fall in an outrageous plot filled with greed, scandal, and murder. In addition to Nanjiani, the show also stars Nicola Peltz Beckham as Dorothy Stratten, Dan Stevens as Paul Snider, and Murray Bartlett as Nick De Noia - the Chippendales choreographer/Banerjee's business partner who (spoiler alert) was murdered in 1987.
"Welcome to Chippendales" isn't the first retelling of this tragic crime saga. Discovery+ released a four-part docuseries in September 2021 titled "Curse of the Chippendales," which chronicles the same harrowing tale through interviews with former Chippendales dancers and original business leads.

Now considered one of the biggest male revues in the world, Chippendales has a surprisingly dark past, including arson and murder, that is revisited in “Welcome to Chippendales“. The true-crime saga stars Kumail Nanjiani as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the unlikely man behind the male-stripping empire whose ambitions eventually led him down a deadly path, as well as Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis and Annaleigh Ashford.
“All of the stuff that happens in it is so unbelievable,” Nanjiani tells Et about the eight-part series, which is adapted by co-showrunners Robert Siegel and Jenni Konner and director Matt Shakman from the 2014 book Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders. “There are, like, 20 unbelievably bonkers things that happen in this thing.”
With the limited series premiering Nov. 22 on Hulu, here’s what to know about Banerjee, his many crimes and other figures key to the Chippendales’ legacy.

Whether you've ever seen the show or not, you've definitely heard of Chippendales.
Popularized in Saturday Night Live sketches and still going strong to this day in Las Vegas, the legendary troupe is famous for its distinct costumes and gasp-worthy performances. But have you ever wondered how Chippendales came to be?
If the answer to that question is yes, then it's your lucky day because Hulu has brought you an eight-episode look into its founder, Somen 'Steve' Banerjee, and the creation of one of the biggest cultural phenomenons in history.
There's a much deeper story within a story when you look into the creation of Chippendales that revolves around Steve and some of his later actions in life. And with the fast-moving series, we'll surely get there before all is said and done.
But Welcome to Chippendales Season 1 Episode 1 is about three things: Steve's aspirations, Chippendales' humble beginning, and the...

Technically, Kumail Nanjiani turned down the leading role in “Welcome to Chippendales.”
Known for his standup and comedic roles like 2017’s “The Big Sick,” Nanjiani wasn’t ready to take on the dramatic leading role of Chippendales founder Somen “Steve” Banerjee when creator Rob Siegel first approached him. But Nanjiani’s comedy career prepared him perfectly for the savvy megalomaniac behind this storied club.
“I used to do a lot of sketches on a show called ‘Portlandia,’ and I always played a guy who was like king of a very small kingdom — he really loved power over it,” Nanjiani told IndieWire via Zoom. “That’s a big aspect of Steve; he’s the king of a very small kingdom, Chippendales, and it’s very important to him that everybody know he is the king, he’s the boss.”
Then there was the “Twilight Zone” episode for Jordan Peele’s 2019 reboot,...

True crime stories continue to pop up on every network and every streaming service. As the stories get weirder and more bizarre, the tales become more and more sensational. Some of the stories are ones that were big news when they happened while others fell under the radar until they get retold in a limited series format. Welcome to Chippendales hits all of the boxes for what a true crime story needs to be but adds in the fun of a retro look at the 1980s as well as dramatic turns from actors we have come to see in comedic roles.
Welcome to Chippendales follows Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani) as he opens a nightclub that evolves into the first all-male strip club that became famous around the world. There is perhaps no universe in which a true story that combines murder, money and scantily clad men is not going to be at least a little bit interesting, so Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales has that going for it.
Also in its favor is an apparently generous budget to recreate the tale’s cocaine-fueled 1980s setting, through lavish sets, carefully curated costumes and an all-bangers soundtrack (Abba, Queen, Kiss). Then there’s the undeniably talented cast — led by Kumail Nanjiani — each of whom get the opportunity to show off what they can do with a meaningful gaze, a twitch of the cheek, a trace of hysteria in an otherwise measured voice.
What Welcome to Chippendales lacks, however, is a grander vision to hang all these blessings on. Over eight 45ish minute installments, the miniseries never quite works its way to a distinctive tone or style or perspective,...

“You can’t make an American dream omelette without breaking a few eggs,” a character muses at one point in Hulu’s new true crime saga, Welcome to Chippendales. The man who hears those words, Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani), indeed managed to live his American dream for a while, but unfortunately when he broke all his eggs, he was left eating a really shitty omelette.
Luckily, Welcome to Chippendales is a more satisfying meal for the most part. Following up his success with Pam & Tommy on Hulu, creator Robert Siegel is back at it on the streamer with a new tale of greed and strife based on the book Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders by K. Scot Macdonald and Patrick MontesDeOca, and he brings together yet another stellar cast for this fresh-but-murky American crime story following the rise and fall of Chippendales creator Banerjee, who struck gold with the...

It’s not every day you see a TV series that features male strippers, true crime and Kumail Nanjiani, but “Welcome to Chippendales” is just that. Based on the lurid saga of Somen “Steve” Banerjee’s L.A. bar-turned-empire, the Hulu show has a shiny exterior, with much more going on below the surface.
Speaking to Variety at the show’s premiere, held at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood Tuesday evening, star and executive producer Nanjiani explained what drew him to the project and the role of Banerjee.
“It’s a really fun show and everything, but it really gets at a lot of stuff that I think about, which is, what is success in America, when is it enough in America, greed, an immigrant coming here trying to fit into a place that’s made for success for a certain kind of person and not other kinds of people,...

Review: An overwhelming majority of limited series these days are based on true crime stories. I feel deja vu just writing the words “true crime” as I start any review over the last year as it starts to all run together. Most of the big-name stories have been covered with niche tales adapted from podcasts and network exposes taking the next round. With fewer marquee stories to choose from, now is the time for lesser-known but no less sensational crimes to get the spotlight. One such story is Welcome to Chippendales, a story that meets all of the requirements for being too crazy to not be true. With development going back...

The story of the Chippendales dancers is far more intense and scandalous than one might expect it to be. While the troupe today is known for the shirtless gyrating and silky-smooth chests of its dancers, it is also a company plagued by the things founder Somen "Steve" Banerjee did to fuel its meteoric rise. Nothing was off limits for the business owner as he chased his version of the American Dream. Human lives didn't even matter, as long as they had wronged him in some way.
A story that is truly stranger than fiction, it's now been turned into "Welcome to Chippendales," the latest biographical limited series from Hulu. Having immigrated to the United States from India, Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani) envisions himself as a businessman along the likes of Hugh Hefner. However, he realizes that achieving such success isn't as easy as simply buying an abandoned club and hosting niche events.

There comes a point in most biopics where there’s a Pause. It could be a lightbulb moment. It could be a casual arch of the eyebrows as someone’s noticing something strange. It could be a passing comment that sinks in for everyone else apart from whoever said it. Regardless, whatever comes right after that Pause is what’s going to change this person’s life. The Pause becomes part of the reason for this film or show existing. We are all watching someone else live out this story again because of what happened after that Pause.

They pepper the life of Steve Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani) on his eight-episode journey from aspiring club owner to the CEO of an international entertainment empire.

Say “Chippendales” today and most people will probably picture ab-tastic men in leather pants and tiny bowties, but the origin story and early years of the dance troupe were much darker and tragic — one with which “Welcome to Chippendales” production designer Richard Bloom was quite familiar. “My mother’s a big fan of true crime and murder shows, so I think I’d seen a podcast or a ‘Dateline’ about it,” he tells Gold Derby at Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

Welcome to Chippendales‘ latest trailer and key art is teasing some shady business gone wrong ahead of the limited series premiere on Hulu beginning Tuesday, November 22. The true-crime saga centers on the outrageous story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee (Kumail Nanjiani), an Indian immigrant who takes an incredible idea and ambition to extraordinary heights. Becoming the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire, Steve lets nothing stand in his way in the process of reaching for the success he once dreamed of. (Credit: Hulu) That kind of drive turns into a runaway train though as Steve’s possessiveness over the empire leads him to take extreme measures. When Steve partners with Nick de Noia (Emmy-winner Murray Bartlett), jealousy begins to simmer under the surface as the charismatic choreographer and producer is recognized as the face of Chippendales. “Repeat after me,” Annaleigh Ashford‘s Irene tells Steve. “Things are going incredibly well,...

Welcome to Chippendales, the forthcoming limited series chronicling the true story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee, lands somewhere at the intersection of muscles and murder.
In the first teaser trailer for the show arriving on Hulu on Nov. 22, Kumail Nanjiani stars as the socially awkward male-stripping empire founder who would do anything to defend his territory. The clip is soundtracked by Journey’s “Any Way You Want It.”
“This is my life,” Banerjee says, introducing a world of quietly kept side-deals and questionable business arrangements being touted as his own American dream.
