“The Avengers,” “Alien Resurrection” and “The Fifth Element” are just a few of the high-profile films that illustrator Sylvain Despretz has worked on; he’s also collaborated with masters of filmmaking including Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick and David Fincher.
Now Despretz is sharing his art in the book “Los ángeles,” published in May by Caurette. It not only offers insight into his craft but provides film buffs with a glimpse into the importance of illustration in cinema.
Whether it’s motion, sound, imagery composition or movement, Despretz explains, “it’s how we tell stories without words.”
Of particular interest is Scott’s 2000 “Gladiator,” which won five Oscars, including best picture, costumes and special effects. Despretz describes the director as “very instinctive and very intuitive, visually. He will start with an image, which is his vision of the film.”
In “Gladiator,” Scott’s inspiration was the painting “Pollice Verso” by French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was set to star in I Am Legend, with Ridley Scott directing. We look back at a lost movie...
Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend is one of the greatest vampire novels ever written, and is a noted inspiration on people like Stephen King and George Romero. The book tells the story of Robert Neville, who is seemingly the lone survivor of a plague that turned most of humanity into bloodsucking ghouls. Neville survives nightly attacks by hordes eager for his blood while trying to overcome the crushing loneliness of being the last human left. It’s a book that manages the twin feat of being a great horror story and an achingly sad character study; it’s got a gut-punch of a twist too.
I Am Legend is an inherently cinematic concept, but it hasn’t had a smooth ride on the big screen.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has set David Koepp to adapt The Themis Files, the debut novel by Sylvain Neuvel that Matt Tolmach and Josh Bratman will produce. It will be published by Ballantine Books. As Sony rights itself after a turbulent end of year, it’s a coup to have an A-lister like Koepp come in as the first writer to turn this large canvas science fiction tale into a potential tent pole. It’s also the second project that came in a flurry of fall acquisitions of new intellectual property, spearheaded by president of production Michael De Luca, that has already drawn strong elements. The other is the Jon Spaihts science fiction script Passengers, which got The Imitation Game‘s Morten Tyldum set to direct and now has Guardians Of The Galaxy‘s Chris Pratt circling as the male lead. De Luca and Lauren Abrahams are overseeing The Themis Files.

The most anticipated and polarising film of 2012 is coming to Blu-ray later this year and details of the bonus content have been found on Amazon.fr.
Anyone hoping for a significant number of deleted scenes to fill in the film’s many plot holes will be disappointed as there are only 15 minutes worth. But the most exciting thing on the disc may be the inclusion of the first and final draft of the script by Damon Lindelof and Jon Spaihts.
Prometheus began as a straight Alien prequel written by Jon Spaihts until Damon Lindelof conducted a re-write that became the final product. If they do actually include Spaihts’ original draft, it will be fascinating to see how he originally planned to link it to Alien and if it would have actually made a better film.
You also get Ridley Scott providing an audio commentary so it will be very interesting...

Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.
A full list of the nominations are below, courtesy of Bleeding Cool, and the award will take place at this years San Diego Comic Con.

As many of you may already know, each and every year, awards distributed at San Diego Comic Con to a few select (and noteworthy) nominees who are chosen by retailers and professionals in the comic book industry. The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

When Warner Bros. finally gave the green light to Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way-developed Akira adaptation last October, it was thought that the years the movie had spent in development were finally about to pay off and we would be seeing Katsuhiro Otomo's acclaimed manga ("comic book" in Japanese) series in live action on the big screen in the very near future. The project got so far as casting, with Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) landing the lead role of Shotaro Kaneda and offers going out to Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga), Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham Carter for key roles, before Warners shut it down over budget, script and casting concerns in early January.
The project may be dead or, like the child with god-like powers for which the movie is named, it may only be in stasis, but we can at least get a glimpse of what...

The thought of Warner Bros green lighting a live-action version of Katushiro Otomo’s 1988 classic Akira scared fans at first. There were a few changes that didn’t sit well with fans, and even though director Jaume Collet Serra was ready to produce the film with Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart taking the lead roles, and Helena Bonham Carter and Ken Watanabe in talks to join them, Warner Bros quickly pulled the plug due to issues with the script.
So while plans for a live-action Akira collects dust, IO9 has come across some storyboard images that shows the link between the original Akira and Collet-Serra’s Akira. These images are the earliest incarnations of what would have been the movie and could have changed since then.
These storyboards are from when Sylvain Despretz & Ruairi Robinson were attached to the project.
So Akira fans, is this how you pictured a live-action Akira?...

Warner Bros has been working on a live-action "Akira" film for several years, with lots of actors and directors being attached at different times. But the movie never got off the ground due to budget concerns, and has now been shelved. Thanks to io9, we now have some of the storyboards that were put together by Sylvain Despretz (Gladiator) during pre-production. At the time, Ruairi Robinson was set to direct the film, with "Book of Eli" writer Gary Whitta signed on as screenwriter and Leonard DiCaprio as producer. Check out the storyboards below. "Akira" is not dead, it's just on hold. The goal is still to eventually make the film, but at this point, the only actor attached is Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy). Storyboards: (click to enlarge)...

Two unused storyboards have surfaced form the now-defunct live-action American remake of Akira, which give us a small sample at what could have unfolded on screen with director Ruairi Rubinson at the helm. The illustrations were created by artist Sylvain Despretz, the man behind the storyboards for Gladiator and Alien Resurrection and even gives us a brief glimpse at the blond-haired, Americanized version of Kaneda.

The recently-canceled remake was originally going to be an adaptation of the classic Japanese manga written by Katsuhiro Otomo and was planned to be an “Americanized” story set in a post-apocalyptic New Manhattan. The new story was going to follow a young man who, after discovering powerful psychic powers, becomes the target of both the military and his motorcycle gang leader brother who was, at the time, set to be played by Garrett Hedlund.

Last we heard on the WB “Akira” live-action movie front, the studio had halted production on the film for budget and other assorted nonsense reasons, none of which involves a sudden dislike of whitewashing an Asian property while, mindbogglingly, still keeping their traditional Asian names. (Try to wrap your head around that one, kids.) Who knows if the film will ever get back on track, but until it does, check out a couple of unused storyboards by artist Sylvain Despretz, who produced these suckers for “Akira’s” then-director Ruairi Robinson. (The film has since gone through a couple of directors since ol Robinson.) They don’t show much, but they do show that, even from the very beginning, WB always intended on white-washing the movie. Hey, if nothing else, at least they’re consistent. “Unknown” director Jaume Collet-Serra is still attached to direct. Well, maybe. Who knows in a few months.

Concept artist Sylvain Despretz created the following storyboards for Warner Bros. live action Akira movie, back when it was in the hands of the first director to be attached, Ruairi Robinson. They don't represent a complete vision of how the movie would have turned out of course, but fans of the Manga and Anime will recognize the scenes from early on in the story. Plus, we get an idea of what the Americanized version would have looked like, a blond Kaneda etc.. Click on the images for a larger view The current incarnation of Akira is currently on the shelf at WB, with many hoping it will just give up and die. It should certainly be a while before we hear anything from it anyway.

The live-action version of Akira is currently on hold, shelved for now over budgetary issues at Warner Bros. In January, director Jaume Collet-Serra was well into pre-production up in Vancouver until development came to a halt. Today, io9 landed some storyboards ("Do Not Distribute" - they say) from the film that reveal elements that scream - yes, this is indeed "Akira." You've got motorcycles, the military and a big bubble-shaped explosion. It appears they were on the right track. Garrett Hedlund of Tron: Legacy was the only confirmed cast member and he was likely playing the blond fella you see in the art below. Helena Bonham Carter, Ken Wattanabe and Kristen Stewart were reportedly circling roles. Sylvain Despretz ( Gladiator ) is responsible for...

Finally, one of the box-sets we’ve all been waiting for! The Alien franchise is one of those series that’s perfect for Blu-Ray. It is a benchmark for the format and you can check out our full review of The Alien Anthology below.
Alien:
How much can one say about the timeless classic sci-fi horror film that hasn’t been said before? Well, very little. This is still Ridley Scott‘s finest film to date and it hasn’t aged a bit. Every beat of tension still lands with a punch, the alien is still one of the best ever to be put on-screen, and it’s atmosphere stays eerie and unsettling throughout.
Alien is the king of the monster movies. Very few horror films can achieve the level of investment Scott and co. did with making you actually care for the ensemble, even outside of Ripley. What...

Let’s level with each other: you’ve already seen all of the (or at least the first two) Alien films, and have formed an opinion roughly in alignment with the rest of society that the first two in the series are excellent, but that the latter two were largely ruined by a combination of repetitiveness and studio interference. You probably already have the Alien Quadrilogy, and have ample resources to find out what new supplemental materials are featured on this release (and they are legion). But as much as anything, you don’t need me to tell you what each of these films is about, what characters appear in any of them, and why you should go out of your way to see any of them. The Alien franchise is established in a way that few are, with its rules, aesthetic, and central themes renowned to those who have...
