Melbourne, Sep 3 (Ians) Rashid Khan, Harry Brook, Quinton De Kock and Tom Curran headline a list of 21 overseas players selected in the second edition of the Bbl overseas draft. Sunday’s draft saw 374 players from 29 countries put their names forward for selection in eight squads ahead of Bbl season 13.
Round one was full of excitement and key retention picks, with seven Clubs selecting Platinum players. Melbourne Stars attempted to use their first pick to recruit Rashid, the world’s best T20 bowler, from the Adelaide Strikers, before he was retained for a seventh straight season by the club in blue.
“I wouldn’t have been allowed back into South Australia (if we didn’t pick Rashid). It was a no-brainer for us. For any team, if Rash is available you would look to pick him… he is the best spinner in the world,” said Jason Gillespie, Strikers’ head coach, on buying back Rashid.

Melbourne, Sep 3 (Ians) India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was the only player from the country selected in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League (Wbbl) overseas draft, held on Sunday. She was placed in the platinum category of the draft and was picked by Melbourne Renegades, who also drafted in West Indies captain Hayley Matthews.
Harmanpreet returns to the Renegades and the Wbbl after missing last season due to injury. She was the Player of the Tournament in Wbbl season seven, after being the Renegades’ leading run-scorer (406) and wicket-taker (15). She recently represented the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, and led the Mumbai Indians to the inaugural Women’s Ipl title earlier this year.
“I’m so pleased we got both of them and I’m looking forward to them working with us again this year. It was a tough decision – do we go Harmanpreet at pick three, or do we go Hayley.

Melbourne, May 12 (Ians) Cricket Australia on Friday confirmed the 2023/24 season of the Big Bash League (Bbl) will feature a reduced 44-match schedule with the Women’s Big Bash League (Wbbl) games to remain at 59.
Amidst criticism over the Bbl schedule being too long, the reduction of Bbl matches (40 regular season matches plus 4 finals) is a key feature in Cricket Australia’s extended seven-year broadcast deal with the Foxtel Group and Seven West Media. A new four-match finals series will feature the top four Clubs, with the finals structure to be confirmed.
“A shortened Bbl will allow us greater flexibility to ensure we can deliver the best possible fixture for clubs and fans while providing a platform that allows players to continue to produce the world-class levels of cricket we’ve seen over the duration of the tournament,” said Alistair Dobson, General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, in a statement.

Melbourne, Sep 29 (Ians) Australia’s Big Bash League (Bbl) on Thursday confirmed the long-awaited introduction of the Decision Review System (Drs) for both the men’s and women’s competitions for the 2022-23 season, said a report by Bbl side Melbourne Renegades.
In a series of firsts in the Bbl this year, which also saw the introduction of the Players’ Draft ahead of the start of the season next month, Cricket Australia (CA) will be introducing the Drs, which was on hold last year due of the pandemic situation, border closure issues and logistic problems.

The remaining 35 matches Wbbl-8 matches, to be broadcast on Foxtel and cricket.

New Delhi, Dec 1 (Ians) Apart from questioning the scheduling of the Big Bash League at a later date than promised -- from December 3 to December 10, without it coinciding with the first India-Australia Test -- Channel 7 has raised objection to Cricket Australia (CA) giving undue favour to the Australian state of Tasmania.
Lewis Martin, managing director of Seven Network, expresses surprise in an affidavit over CA hosting of eight of the first 12 men's Bbl matches in small stadia that makes no commercial sense.
"CA scheduling the playing of eight of the first 12 men's Bbl matches in Tasmania in two relatively small and unheralded stadia (including the University of Tasmania Stadium) would be commercially irrational unless CA were otherwise incentivised, presumably by arrangement with the Government of Tasmania, to do so. In 2019-20 men's Bbl tournament, only one of the first 12 men's Bbl matches was played in Tasmania," said Martin in...

Sydney, Nov 22 (Ians) Wbbl franchise Sydney Sixers have been fined $25,000, of which $15,000 was suspended for a period of 12 months, due to an administration error that saw fast bowler Hayley Silver-Holmes named on the team sheet to play against Melbourne Renegades despite not being part of the primary squad in the ongoing edition of the Women's Big Bash League.
The Sixers had hoped to have Silver-Holmes in their side to face the Renegades after an injury, but her paperwork was not lodged before the match started, meaning she was ineligible for selection. Sixers officials, after realising the error, removed her from the match and she did not bat or take the field during the Renegades' successful run-chase of 167.
Cricket Australia's Senior Conduct Commissioner, Alan Sullivan QC, termed the violation as "serious" but also acknowledged the fact the Sixers had self-reported and moved swiftly to remove the fast bowler from the match after realising the error.

Melbourne, Nov 16 (Ians) 'Power Surge', 'X-factor Player' and 'Bash Boost' are the three new rules that have been introduced by Cricket Australia for the tenth edition of the Big Bash League (Bbl) which starts December 10.
The 'Power Surge' will consist of a two-over period where the fielding side is allowed only two fielders outside the inner ring. The batting side can take it at any given time from the 11th over of the innings onwards. Meanwhile, the powerplay at the start of the innings has been reduced to four overs.
The 'X-Factor player', named as either the 12th or 13th player on the team sheet, can come into the game at the 10th over of the first innings and replace any player who is yet to bat or bowled no more than one over.
The 'Bash Boost' is a bonus point which will be given midway through the second innings.

The matches, to be held on November 25, 26 and 28, will begin at 7:10pm Australia time.
The move to an evening prime time finals series will take the Wbbl to more Australian viewers than ever before in just the tournament's second season in a standalone format, CA hopes.
