Les belles manièresJean-Claude Guiguet’s Les belles manières (1978) is a beautiful film, but, more to the point, it is one that has taken beauty as its subject. Not content with merely exemplifying, or with setting itself the all-too-easy task of finding beauty in the world, it is a film about feeling beauty, about the effects and significance of an adored object, the whys and hows of it. The setting for this investigation is neither here nor there: a grande-bourgeois apartment enveloped in curtains, dark wood, and the comforting presence of family heirlooms, the precious as well as the worthless. It is a space resignedly past decadence, one which has dried out, but that has preserved some of the aroma of its past. A woman and her son live there. The son, overcome with apathy, has become an anchorite; in hopes of luring him out, and to lend an occasional hand with the housework,...

Despite the fact the Festival de Cannes—for whatever reason—did not want Abel Ferrara's Welcome to New York, Cannes itself got the film, first in three separate cinema screenings staged during the festival, and then simultaneously online in France through video on demand. Wild Bunch, the film's producers, staged this alt-Cannes premiere as if it were a real one, complete with a press conference with director Abel Ferrara, screenwriter Christ Zois, and actors Gérard Depardieu and Jacqueline Bisset, as well as a series of interviews with the talent provided for the press.
I was able to participate in a roundtable conversation with the director, who was generous in time, spirit and patience with his surrounding journalists. For more on the film itself, see my report from Cannes, as well as Marie-Pierre Duhamel's report from Paris.
Question: I read somewhere that this film was...

A total of 24 co-production projects and sections devoted to China, digital and remakes help make up Rome’s industry events.
The 8th Rome Film Festival (Nov 8-17) has revealed details of its International Film Market ahead of its launch next week.
Rome’s key industry initiatives – the informal The Business Street (TBS) screenings market and the New Cinema Network (Ncn) co-production market – will run from Nov 13-17.
Organisers are expecting distributors and producers from 45 countries and 700 accredited visitors as well as 24 selected projects, a China Day and a new initiative dedicated to remakes as well as meetings, panel discussions and conferences.
Single venue; digital focus
For its eighth edition, TBS will take place once again in Via Veneto, the street famously featured in Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita.
But for the first time both TBS and Ncn will be held in a single venue, the Hotel Bernini Bristol.
The Terrace will host the buyers and sellers...

One month, 280 films and 70,000 words later, my guide to the films of 2010 is now complete. I hope you've enjoyed reading it all - it's been utterly exhausting but an ultimately rewarding venture I've been single-handedly pulling together since early December. If you have liked it, my only request is that you help spread the word about it now that it's all done.
If you're a fellow blogger or site owner, please give it a plug on your site. If you're a reader, give it a mention on Facebook, Twitter or other online places you might venture. A lot of effort went into this, the greatest reward so far has been seeing it talked about and hearing your reactions. I'm glad many of you have gotten a lot of use out of the previous pages, so I hope you enjoy this final part:
Vincere
Opens: 2010
Cast: Filippo Timi, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Corrado Invernizzi,...
