Michael Beach was in his late twenties and primed for a breakout performance when he landed the role of Pluto in Carl Franklin's "One False Move." This was not supposed to be that performance. It was a low-budget crime flick from a couple of unknown screenwriters named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson that was intended to go straight to video. But when L.A. Weekly journo Anne Thompson caught an early screening, she spread the word to her critic colleagues. Once the Los Angeles Times' Sheila Benson and the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert began raving about the film, the distributor, I.R.S. Releasing, opted for a small theatrical release. The movie wound up on multiple year-end top 10 lists and earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations (with Franklin beating out newcomer Quentin Tarantino for Best Director).

Carl Franklin’s brilliantly dark breakout, the 1992 indie “One False Move,” is now out in a new 4k edition from Criterion Channel.
Franklin talked to TheWrap about why it was so important to show the “emotional” violence of the opening scenes, even though it had scores of people, and his his own agent, walking out of screenings.
He also discussed landing the late Bill Paxton, his first choice for the lead role of the naïve small-town sheriff, Dale “Hurricane” Dixon, and how audiences were “legitimately frightened” of Michael Beach’s serial killer character.

31 years after its initial theatrical release, Carl Franklin still can't believe "One False Move" happened.
The actor-turned-director took a crackerjack screenplay by a pair of struggling writers named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, and turned what was supposed to be a direct-to-video thriller featuring a couple of familiar faces (Bill Paxton and Cynda Williams) into a buzzy critical darling. After a brief theatrical run, the film earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations, with Franklin taking home the trophy for Best Director.
Despite this acclaim, "One False Move" has remained an under-the-radar cult favorite amongst neo-noir fans, perhaps because it lacks the Coen Brothers' archness or the overripe sensuality of Lawrence Kasdan's "Body Heat." It's a quietly surprising, yet plenty violent thriller about a trio of criminals who, after committing a string of vicious murders, flee Los Angeles for a backwater Arkansas town run by police chief Dale "Hurricane...

The racism in Carl Franklin’s One False Move suggests a festering pool of standing water just waiting to be disturbed. Dale Dixon (Bill Paxton), the police chief of Star City, Arkansas, casually utters the n-word while having a peaceful meal with his colleagues, one of whom is Black. Lila Walker (Cynda Williams), the mixed-race outlaw trying to avoid capture in order to see her son again, understands American inequality all too well: “Looking guilty is being guilty, for Black people,” she tells her brother. Having recently shot a white Texas state trooper in the head at point blank range, the irony of her statement is hard to miss. But that doesn’t mean she’s wrong.

Two years ago, during the lockdown, I wrote that I had become addicted to those little bird-box libraries that make walking here something of a literary pilgrimage.
I’m still addicted. And almost two months ago, just before the writers strike began, I made a charming discovery–that one of my neighbors is a Very Famous Writer– all thanks to his sidewalk library.
The writer will remain unnamed, because privacy is something to be respected, even by reporters. But here’s the short form:
About four o’clock one afternoon, before the dog-crowd comes out, I felt a need for one of those short, head-clearing walks. A good target, I figured, would be a spot some blocks away, where somebody or other was maintaining what I’d long thought was the best little library in town. I won’t give titles, because some of those might tip the owner’s identity.

Tom Epperson and his wife Stefani Ames are leaving town, heading to Santa Fe in early May—another player from the movie era of the 90’s and early 2000’s soon gone.
They’ve been scattering for a while now, to Long Island, Palm Springs, D. C., Serbia, anywhere but Los Angeles. The local climate is still good. But the film industry, if that anachronistic term still applies, has been less than friendly to mature, seasoned talents who had mastered the art of making popular, grown-up, full-screen movies in a self-contained two-hour format. So they bail, a lot of them, figuring it’s better to start fresh somewhere else than to sit around a table at the Brentwood Country Mart, talking about what used to be.

Heading to a book party for screenwriter-novelist Tom Epperson’s latest, a South American journalistic thriller called Roberto To The Dark Tower Came, I got to wondering: Will there ever be another great Hollywood book? You know, the kind that makes you catch your breath, slap the beach chair, and gasp, “Did they really do that stuff?”
Mostly, they did—witness the photograph of Robert Towne lounging in the sand with his naked Amazons, as he did some sort of prep for Personal Best, in 1981. Published in 1998, it was, for me, the last truly great movie business book. I sat down with Oscar-winning screenwriter, actor, director and musician Billy Bob Thornton for Venice Magazine in October of 2001. He had a slate of very diverse projects he was promoting: his first solo music album, "Private Radio," as well as the films "Monster's Ball," "Bandits," and "The Man Who Wasn't There." My strongest memory is of Thornton's quiet intensity and an undercurrent of Southern affability, which came out once he decided you were okay. He seemed to feel that way about me after I shared with him my idolatry of legendary filmmaker Fred Zinnemann, something we shared. I also remember his unusual diet, when our lunch was served. Thornton got the biggest plate of sliced papaya I've seen to date, artfully presented. I got a seafood salad. He looked at my plate, smiled, and told me about the horrible shellfish allergy he'd been saddled with all his life, and how...

Ridley Scott sure is picky for a director who has directed so many movies. While famous for creating such visual feasts as "Alien," "Blade Runner," "Thelma & Louise," "Gladiator" and "Black Hawk Dawn," Scott has seemingly exited as many projects as he's seen through. "Blade Runner 2" is merely the latest "will-he-or-won't-he?" moment in his career. Recently, Scott dropped some hints about the long-delayed sequel to the 1982 film, but said he wouldn't be sitting in the director's chair. Now, he's backtracking, telling Yahoo, "I don’t know about [not directing 'Blade Runner 2'] yet." He added that the sequel could be his "most personal" film, and that the present script is "very, very good." It's certainly not the first time Scott has been ambiguous about taking on a directing gig. Here are some of the more interesting projects he never made: "I Am Legend" Scott got pretty far along on the pre-poduction process of the Richard Matheson adaptation in the '90s,...

Since his debut in 1977 with the historical drama, The Duellists, director Ridley Scott has gradually built up an eclectic body of work. His Hollywood career began with the stunning one-two sci-fi punch of Alien and Blade Runner, before heading off into fantasy (Legend), thrillers (Someone To Watch Over Me, Black Rain) and road-trip drama (the Oscar-winning Thelma And Louise).
As James Clayton pointed out in his recent Friday column, the 70-something Sir Ridley shows no sign of slowing down, and if anything, his slate of forthcoming films is somewhat bewildering - in what seems like every other interview, the director will mention another project of one sort or another, which makes working out what he's likely to be...

The Counsellor has arrived, and with it we find Sir Ridley Scott returning to cinemas. He keeps on returning and will make many more future returns. The fact that he turns 76 at the end of this month is irrelevant because the director shows no sign of stopping, and there's no reason why he should.
At least, that's my personal view as someone who always looks forward to seeing Scott's latest feature at the multiplex. It's good to know that he's still going strong and making films at a prolific rate, because the movie scene would be slightly sorrier without him. Billy Bob Thornton’s first narrative directorial effort since 2001’s “Daddy and Them” certainly doesn’t lack for ambition, what with a dozen or so characters from three generations of two different families bumping heads (and other body parts) at a family funeral in the Deep South of the late 1960s. Despite the presence of a powerhouse cast, however, “Jayne Mansfield’s Car” suffers from a screenplay (by Thornton and Tom Epperson) that’s both too sprawling and too tidy; it’s one thing to explore the messiness of familial relationships and regret against the backdrop of the Vietnam War,...

Chicago – There was a time when it looked like not only would Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton be one of our great actors but possibly a threat behind the camera as well. Everyone knows the impression of his character from “Sling Blade” but many forget that he directed it as well. He followed that up with the flawed but ambitious and interesting “All the Pretty Horses.”
Then his career faded, failing to find the parts that could really show his undeniable talents in front of the camera and simply not working behind it.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
His first directorial effort since 2001’s awful “Daddy & Them” is making its debut on some On Demand platforms and in limited release this Friday and, despite some interesting performances and ideas, “Jayne Mansfield’s Car” is not the movie to give Billy Bob his much-needed comeback. It’s episodic, uneven, bizarre, clichéd, and boring all at the same time.

"Jayne Mansfield's Car" is the first feature film Billy Bob Thornton has written and directed in 12 years, and its new trailer finds the Oscar winner donning a thick Southern accent as an Alabama native. "Car," set in the late 1960s, depicts a multi-generational family that clashes when their British counterparts -- one of whom is referred to as "that English bastard" -- call to inform them of the death of their matriarch.
Robert Duvall plays the head honcho of the Alabama family, while John Hurt leads the London clan. Thornton, Kevin Bacon and Robert Patrick play the three Southern siblings, with Tippi Hedren, Frances O'Connor and Robert Stevenson rounding out the cast. Co-written by frequent Thornton collaborator Tom Epperson, "Car" hits theaters Sept. 13. Will it net Thornton a second screenplay Oscar, following his win for 1996's "Sling Blade"? Watch the trailer and weigh in.

Billy Bob Thornton is primarily known as an actor nowadays, but it would be foolish to forget about his contributions to the film world as a writer/director - after all, the guy is an Oscar winner. In 1996 Thornton earned nearly unanimous critical praise for his directorial debut, the Southern drama Sling Blade, for which he picked up both an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a nomination for Best Actor. His filmmaker efforts since, however, have been rather few and far between, and he hasn't directed a feature since 2001's Daddy and Them. Now he's finally back in the director's chair, and from the look of the trailer for his new movie, Jayne Mansfield's Car (which was posted by Yahoo!, there are equal parts drama and comedy to be had. Each and every month, we here at Sound On Sight dedicate the entire month to a specific theme. Sometimes we follow an event, an actor, a filmmaker and so on, as decided by our readers who vote on our monthly poll. February of 2013 was dedicated to actor Keanu Reeves. When the results came in, just about everyone was surprised that Keanu won over Steven Soderbergh, who finished a close second. But what has been even more surprising is that our Keanu Reeves marathon is without a doubt the most successful so far – driving in more traffic than the likes of Quentin Tarantino and 007.
Despite the fact that his acting has frequently been ridiculed as wooden, Keanu has always had a magical presence everywhere he appears, both on and offscreen. There is something to be said about a man who dropped out of high-school to follow his dreams of acting, and 27 years later,...

Some people talk about being good friend’s with their exes but we’ve always wondered how true those statements really are. Then we look at Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton and realize that their relationship actually hasn’t been exaggerated. They are are close. So much so that Angelina has written the foreword to Billy Bob’s new memoir, The Billy Bob Tapes: A Cave Full of Ghosts. Considering they divorced back in 2003, in a world where splits can be quite acrimonious, we think that the gesture is quite something. Update: Billy Bob Thornton apparently isn't revisiting his wild and raucous past after all.
Thornton has now officially denied reports that certain elements of "And Then We Drove," a road movie he's co-writing with longtime writing partner Tom Epperson, are inspired by his relationship with ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
Variety broke the news on Monday, but Thornton has now told Vulture that he doesn't know where the information came from.
"We have no idea. My manager told me this last night. He’s Angelina’s manager, too. He goes, 'You didn’t say any of this, did you?' And I said, 'The only press I’ve done was this press conference, and you were there. Everyone heard what I said at the press conference.' I mean, I was asked about Angelina because her film was playing here, if I’m gonna see her and I said, 'I hope so' or something like that.

Back in 1996 when Billy Bob Thornton directed his first feature, Sling Blade, I thought that he had made his mark and was going to become one of the big directors working in Hollywood. That never happened, though. After that he only directed the Cormac McCarthy adaptation All the Pretty Horses in 2000 and then Daddy and Them, a movie I don’t even remember existing, in 2001. I guess the guy just decided that he’d rather be an actor than a director. And that’s fine, but now that he’s getting a bit older it seems like the directing bug might have bit once again. Last year he directed both a Willie Nelson documentary called The King of Luck, which is currently looking for distribution deals, and a dramatic film called Jayne Mansfield’s Car, which just played Berlinale. And apparently he’s not stopping there, because Variety has news that Thornton and his writing partner Tom Epperson...

Billy Bob Thornton is a familiar name in Hollywood for acting, but don't forget directing, writing, and producing.
Thornton's Jayne Mansfield's Car is premiering at the Berlin Film Festival this month, and he just announced that he will be co-writing and directing an "ethereal" road movie called And Then We Drove.
Originally titled Drove, Thornton teams up with pal and previous writing partner, Tom Epperson (The Gift) to script the film funded by Alexander Rodnyansky's Ar Films and Geyer Kosinski's Media Talent Group. And Then We Drove will be "one of the first of up to six under-$20 million features to spring from the new $120 million film fund."

Billy Bob Thornton returns to directing with an intelligent, polished character drama set in the American south
Billy Bob Thornton has been absent from the director's chair for over a decade; still burned, it has to be said, from the debacle of the Cormac McCarthy adaptation All the Pretty Horses in 2000, when he was forced to cut a third of his film's running time. He's chosen his re-entry with some care: a multi-character ensemble drama, set in the American south in 1969, with firecracker roles for Kevin Bacon, Robert Duvall and Robert Patrick, as well as Thornton himself.
Duvall is Jim Caldwell, the paterfamilias of a small-town clan: Bacon, Patrick and Thornton his neatly delineated male offspring. Bacon is the rebel hippy, anti-war, dope-smoking, commune-inhabiting; Patrick the square straight-arrow, destined to follow in daddy's footsteps; Thornton the oddball outsider, bearing more than a trace of the actor's own well-publicised obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Billy Bob Thornton is set to co-write and direct an "ethereal" road movie "And Then We Drove" for Ar Films and Media Talent Group says Variety.
The story follows a man on a road trip who picks up a girl along the way with stops in Los Angeles, the South and the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona.
The film is said to be partly inspired by Thornton's wild and well-documented relationship with ex-wife Angelina Jolie.
Thornton and his longtime writing partner Tom Epperson are scripting with a first draft due in March ahead of shooting later this year. Alexander Rodnyansky and Geyer Kosinski will produce.

I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of Billy Bob Thornton, but you have to give him credit for being one of the most eccentric actors working in Hollywood today — aside from internet favorite Nicolas Cage. Variety reports that the actor is currently co-writing and plans on directing a road picture, And Then We Drove, which he describes as “ethereal.”
The title of the film is still under construction, as Thornton himself and his longtime writing buddy Tom Epperson are busy writing the script. The funding — which will be one of the first of six under-$2o million feature to come from the $120 million film fund formed by Alexander Rodnyansky‘s Ar Films and Geyer Kosinski’s Media Talent Group — and Drove itself were developed during the Berlinale world premiere of Thornton‘s latest, Jayne Mansfield‘s Car.

Ok guys, here’s something great and we want your full attention! Jayne Mansfield’s Car is an upcoming Billy Bob Thornton‘s project that will have an awesome cast.
And when we say that, we actually mean that Robert Duvall is already on board, and that, according to the latest reports, John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick, Ray Stevenson and John Patrick Amedori are about to join him as well!
Thornton co-wrote the whole thing with his writing partner Tom Epperson, and, at this moment we know that Jayne Mansfield’s Car is actually “a comedy with dramatic overtone that revolves around the culture clash of two families, from different continents, in 1969.”
At least, that’s how guys from Deadline describe the whole thing.
Or, as Robert Duvall previously explained:
“It’s about a guy in between Wwi and WWII who raises a family after his wife left him...

It's been a decade since Billy Bob Thornton has stepped behind the camera to direct a narrative feature (apparently he has a documentary on Willie Nelson out this year), but now it's being reported that he's finally put together his next fictional project, entitled Jayne Mansfield's Car. Robert Duvall, John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick, John Patrick Amedori and Ray Stevenson are set to star with Thornton in the film, which is described as a "comedy with dramatic overtones." The story revolves around the culture clash of two families, from different continents, in 1969. Thornton co-wrote the script with his frequent writing partner Tom Epperson (One False Move). The project has been in development for quite a while now and has recently picked up funding by Ar Films. Production on Jayne Mansfield's Car begins June 22 in Georgia. It's nice to see Billy Bob stepping up to direct once again after a lengthy leave of absence.

Despite earning much acclaim for the directorial debut Sling Blade, Billy Bob Thornton has only directed two features since, and the last one was released back in 2001. He’s planning to get behind the camera again with Jayne Mansfield’s Car, which is based off a script by the actor himself and Tom Epperson, and with Ar Films funding. He’s already cast Dennis Quaid, Rovert Duvall and Dwight Yoakam in roles, and now Deadline tells us about the main cast that’s been assembled for the film.

I have really enjoyed Thornton in his roles in Monster's Ball, Bad Santa and Love Actually. He directed the documentary, The King of Luck, about Willie Nelson. He has directed such films as Sling Blade and All the Pretty Horses. What are your thoughts on this news?

Looks like Billy Bob Thornton is set with cast and financing for his next directorial effort [1], Jayne Mansfield's Car. But it also looks like neither of the recently reported additions [2], Dennis Quaid and Dwight Yoakam, might be in the movie. Get the full new roster after the break. We've known that Robert Duvall would have a key role [3] alongside Mr. Thornton, and Deadline [4] reports that John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick and Ray Stevenson will also appear. (This is a movie free of women, or so it would seem.) John Patrick Amedori is another one of the film's leads. Billy Bob Thornton co-wrote with Tom Epperson, and Deadline calls it "A comedy with dramatic overtone [that] revolves around the culture clash of two families, from different continents, in 1969." That can be elaborated with previous comments from Robert Duvall, who said, It’s about a guy in between Wwi and WWII who...
