Indicator delivers another in their long line of fan-friendly box sets with Hammer Volume Five – Death and Deceit (a subhead that could be applied to the majority of the studio’s output). This latest release would be for Hammer completists only were it not for the extras that shine a bright light on a few overlooked artists and their work.
Hammer Volume Five – Death and Deceit
Blu ray – Region B Only
Powerhouse Films/Indicator
1961, 1962, 1963, 1965 / 1.85:1, 2.35:1 / 75, 87, 83 and 81 min.
Starring Richard Basehart, Christopher Lee, Lionel Jeffries, Oliver Reed
Cinematography by Arthur Grant, Jack Asher, Reg Wyer
Directed by Michael Carreras, John Gilling
Michael Carreras’s Visa to Canton was a Cold War thriller photographed in Technicolor but released to U.S. theaters in black and white. To add insult to injury it was given a new and even more prosaic title: Passport to China – a fate this unassuming little Cold War thriller didn’t deserve.

How to shake up a mid-sixties slump at Hammer Films? It’s back to basics time, with Christopher Lee returning in a most unusual way: there wasn’t much left of Dracula at the finish of his first outing as the number one supernatural public enemy. Terence Fisher is also back, enlivening the third film in the series with some surprisingly excessive gore. Barbara Shelley’s superb performance makes her Hammer’s most self-possessed heroine.

Greetings, everyone! Welcome to what is the final Blu-ray and DVD recap of 2018, as it seems like we have no major genre home media releases coming home next week on Christmas. That being said, the year is ending on a strong note, as we have a number of essential titles hitting various formats this Tuesday.
Scream Factory is keeping busy with their Collector’s Edition releases of Dracula: Prince of Darkness as well as John Carpenter’s Starman (two of my personal favorites!), and Arrow Video has put together a stellar Special Edition of Bloody Birthday for this week as well. As far as recent theatrical titles go, The House With a Clock in Its Walls, The Predator, A Simple Favor, and Venom all arrive on various formats this Tuesday, and if you’re a completist, there’s a 4-film collection of the Predator movies that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has assembled,...

Hammer horror film actor who went on to take a variety of roles in popular television series, including Coronation Street, The Saint and Blake’s 7
Suzan Farmer, who has died aged 75 of cancer, was a vocally precise actor with beguiling eyes who starred in a number of films for Hammer, the British company that specialised in memorable gothic horror.
In particular she was the heroine of Terence Fisher’s Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966), the second of Hammer’s productions with Christopher Lee as the evil count. The target of the vampire’s lust, she bravely resisted him with the help of her screen husband Francis Matthews, before shooting the ice off a frozen moat and plunging Dracula into the freezing water below at the film’s climax. Farmer also provided, in post-production, the screams supposedly uttered by her co-star Barbara Shelley.

By the mid ‘60s, the glory days of Boris Karloff were far behind him. The gentle giant forever known as the screen’s original (and best) Frankenstein monster was relegated to appearing in disappointing quickies that squandered his immense talents. However, there were some twilight standouts: Mario Bava’s Black Sabbath (1963), a couple of animated delights, How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) and Mad Monster Party? (1967), and his dignified portrayal of an aging horror star in Peter Bogdanovich’s debut, Targets (1968). Nestled in between (and often shown the door) was Daniel Haller’s Die, Monster, Die! (1965), an early, colorful, and fun foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft.

Millennium Entertainment recently sealed a deal to bring Hammer titles to the Us and Dracula: Prince of Darkness is the first title to be released on Blu-ray. At this time, the only Us-specific news we have is that the movie will be released on September 3rd, but we should have a full press release from Millennium shortly. Because the release is coming straight from Hammer, we believe it will mirror the UK release and here’s a look at that version’s bonus features, transfer, and cover art:

Hammer Blu-rays The Devil Rides Out (1968, dir. Terence Fisher)
Hammer applies its trademark Gothic veneer with considerably greater care than usual in this, the second and best of the company's three stabs at the satanic stylings of author Dennis Wheatley. Christopher Lee comes over to the light for a rare foray as central hero the Duc de Richleau, teaming up with friend Rex van Rijn (Leon Greene) to prevent the evil Satanist Mocata (Charles Gray) from enmeshing the son of his old friend (Patrick Mower) into a devil-worshipping cult.
The Devil Rides Out is perhaps best remembered for what Lee argues in his commentary to be Hammer's most enduring image, that of our heroes fighting a series of spectral and psychological nemeses from within the protective confines of a ritual circle. And yet the most chilling scene contains no special effects, but is instead a simple conversation between the wife...

Although he entered the literary world and, gradually, the public consciousness in the 19th century, Count Dracula is as important and iconic a 20th century character as almost any other. The Dracula story has been told so often in film and every other conceivable medium that seeing a new version is like hearing a cover of a familiar song; perhaps over-familiar, given the relative dearth of recent adaptations. That he is so easily mocked is further evidence of this; common points of reference are easy targets, a fact that took its toll, in some way, on both Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee. Lugosi only actually played the character twice onscreen, but when he returned to the role on stage late in his career the once-terrified audiences rocked with laughter. Lee too seems to have had a love-hate relationship with his most famous role.

★★★★★ Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966), the first Hammer classic to be re-released by StudioCanal in its restored and remastered Blu-ray collection, is quite simply one of the finest examples of horror cinema ever made. Even the most cynical viewer would be hard put to find complaint with Terence Fisher's masterly direction of vampiric nastiness amidst the Carpathians, starring Christopher Lee as the eponymous Dracula and Francis Matthews, Charles Tingwell, Suzan Farmer and Barbara Shelley as the unfortunate travellers who become ensnared in his web of evil.

A long time ago, in an obscure European country far, far away there existed creatures of the night who didn't sparkle, who didn't wander around with pained expressions on their faces, and who didn't look like they'd just stepped out of a My Chemical Romance video. The most famous, or should that be infamous, of them all was Dracula, the undisputed Lord of the Undead, and the subject of many, many movies over the years; but none of which captured the quintessential essence of a great vampire flick quite as well as Dracula, Prince of Darkness (1966).
Described by Hammer Films historian Marcus Hearn, who appears in a new half hour retrospective of the flick in the extras, as perhaps the most representative of all the Hammer Dracula films due to the inclusion of several vital ingredients - including the brooding manservant, the remote European locale, the well-to-do English characters adrift abroad,...

The first film on their slate is Dracula: Prince of Darkness, which will be available in the UK on March 5th. Not only do we have a list of bonus features and cover art, but images from the newly restored film.
Studio Canal will be handling the title releases in the UK and Dracula: Prince of Darkness is already available for pre-order. While Us release plans have not been revealed, we can’t imagine these films not hitting the states in the near future. Hammer has already announced that they are discussing restorations with their Us studio partners. Here is some more information on the restoration from the previous press release:

To celebrate the release of Retreat, in which Thandie Newton and Cillian Murphy unwisely try to patch up their failing marriage by spending time alone in the only cottage on a remote Scots island, here’s a guide to the movies’ worst holiday destinations compiled by film critic and author Kim Newman. These films tell you all the things you don’t see in the brochures.
And Soon the Darkness (1970)
Destination: Northern France | Holidaymakers: Pamela Franklin, Michele Dotrice | Major snag: Psycho Killer
This is a cautionary tale about the perils of venturing abroad, especially if you happen to be two English girls in short shorts who decide to go on a cycling tour of an area of France where several young women have mysteriously disappeared. It’s a slow burn of a movie, beginning with the petty discomforts – unfriendly guest-houses, leering locals, squabbles – of a shared trip, then escalating to cat-and-mouse with a maniac.

British actor Ian McShane has no recollection of his first two marriages - because he was drinking copiously to ease his unhappiness.
The star, who plays Blackbeard in the next Pirates of the Caribbean film, endured a lengthy battle with alcohol when he first broke into the industry as a teenager.
McShane insists he can barely remember his marriages to actress Suzan Farmer, who he divorced after three years in 1968, and Ruth Post, who he has two children with.
He tells Britain's The Independent Magazine, "I started this so young - my first film was at 19 - I was not really happy. You don't know it at the time, but looking back I didn't know who the f**k I was. I don't remember my first two marriages... the details are very sketchy.
"My first wife was delightful. She was the queen of the Hammer Horror movies, but I never saw her for two years. It was the Sixties... My second marriage was to a girl I met in Manchester (England), kept a long-distance relationship going for two years, then we got married... disaster."
McShane has now been sober for 23 years and he's adamant he won't fall back into his wild ways: "I went to an AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) meeting with a friend and I haven't had a drink since, and I never think twice about it. But you must never be smug... about anything.
"Anyway, it's exhausting, that lifestyle. You think 'I'm getting old, give it up... there's a new generation who can take over and have a good time.'"
McShane wed his third wife Gwen Humble in 1980.

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.
