Bill Fogtman was born in Aberdeen MD, U.S.A. He is a filmmaker and
photographer, working in Brazil since 1973. He was a co-founder of the renowned Rio de Janeiro film production company Sky Light Cinema. Since 1974 he has worked as cameraman, sound recordist, film and sound editor, and later as a DoP, film director, executive producer and producer, on documentaries, institutionals and commercials, as well as feature films. His credits include "Gabriela" by Bruno Barreto, "O Homem do Pau Brasil" by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, "Imagens do Inconsciente" by Leon Hirzman, "A Igreja dos Oprimidos" by Jorge Bodanzky, "Moments of Play" by Jorgen Leth, "Powaqqatsi" by Godfrey Reggio, and "Tigrero" by Mika Kaurismäki.
As executive producer and projects supervisor, he has participated in the last 20 years in major Brazilian feature film productions such as "Tieta do Agreste", "Estorvo", "O Xangô de Baker Street", "O Veneno da Madrugada", and "Brasileirinho", amongst others, by important directors including Cacá Diegues, Ruy Guerra, Miguel Farias Jr. and Mika Kaurismäki. His most recent feature film, as executive producer and executive in charge of post production, is "Capitães da Areia" by Cecilia Amado, from the novel by Jorge Amado. During this period he has continued to work on Brazilian and foreign documentaries, as executive producer, unit manager and DoP. At present he is dedicated to the development of new documentaries and series for television, and is the executive producer of the feature film "Rio da Dúvida" (River of Doubt), to be directed by Joel Pizzini, now in pre-production.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he also worked in the ecotourism segment, first as partner of Safari Ecológico ECO Ltda., a pioneer ecotourism operator in Brazil, implanting regular ecological cruises in the Anavilhanas Archipelago and on the Negro and Solimões rivers and main tributaries, from a river base in Manaus, where he operated the renowned regional cruise ship "Tunã". After the success of the ECO cruises, he was contracted by another operator, Brazilian Ecological Safari Tourism Ltda., and charged with developing an ecotourism project in the Mato Grosso Pantanal regional, in Poconé county. As operations director, he was responsible for various expeditions within the Pantanal to choose and purchase land for the project base of operations, and after this for designing and building special land vehicles and river boats for excursions, supervising the building of the operations base, planning of excursion itineraries, schedules and activities, as well as planning and logistics coordination of the entire operational end of the project.
His interests and hobbies include: photography - he possesses an extensive archive and portfolio of 35mm b&w/color and digital photos of his trips throughout Brazil from 1974 to present; ethnology and ethnography of Brazilian Indians; ecology and study of issues pertaining to the Amazon and Mato Grosso Pantanal regions; exploring small isolated rivers, creeks and waterways by canoe; offroad trips in 4x4 vehicles; trekking on foot and horseback; developing treatments and screenplays, both fiction and non-fiction.
He was a founding member of the Brazilian Association of Cinematography - ABC, as director of photography, sound engineer and post production supervisor.
