Netflix and Federation Spain, the Spanish division of Paris and L.A.-based Federation Entertainment, are teaming to produce “Las niñas de cristal,” a psychological drama set against the world of classical ballet that toplines “Money Heist” and “Elite” star Maria Pedraza.
The movie is one highlight in Netflix’s first announcement of a production-distribution slate focused entirely on Spanish original movies. The eight titles it profiles that are moving into production or set for release in 2021 and 2022 are a sign of Netflix ramping up its production of Spanish movies as part of its bet on Spanish scripted TV and movies, with Spain punching above its weight in the number of Netflix originals compared to Spanish subscribers. The Netflix slate highlights:

Back in August, Westworld showrunner Lisa Joy clapped back at the accusation the show would use violence against women as a cheap, titillating plot device. During the HBO TCA presentation, Joy made it clear in no uncertain terms that exploring the depths of human depravity was not an exploitative gimmick for the series. “Sexual violence is an issue we take seriously; it's extraordinarily disturbing and horrifying […] It's about exploring the crime, establishing the crime and the torment of the characters within this story and exploring their stories hopefully with dignity and depth.” Now five episodes into the show, I feel confident in saying Westworld is delivering on that promise. Part of what makes Westworld so engrossing is it layers its themes like a delicious tiramisu of existential despair. Watching the hosts repeat their loops for several episodes (that damned can of condensed milk!) doubles as an uncomfortable metaphor for the banality of our daily lives.

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

We're getting to know The Film Experience readership. Today we're talking to "Peggy Sue" who you know from the comments. Though he is more likely to answer to "Christian" in person ;)
Hi, Christian. Let's start at the very beginning. Your first movie memory?
Christian: Mary Poppins' cough syrup. I'll explain. As a kid I was always sick, so I vividly remember being amazed by her changing colors medicine. Mine was brownish and disgusting so I thought the whole flying thing was Ok, but the syrup was utterly amazing!
What is your relationship to Pedro Almodóvar and his muses?
Christian: Total devotion. My favorites are Carmen Maura, Verónica Forqué and Chus Lampreave.
Your three favorite actresses in general?
Three? Man, you're tough! I'll stick to the living ones: Kathleen Turner, Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon, and Meryl. Plus almost every single British actress out there and half of the Argentinians.

Writer/director David O. Russell has been tackling difficult family issues since his breakout comedy/drama Spanking The Monkey back in 1994. He followed that up with the more whimsical Flirting With Disaster. His most recent hit, the based on a true story The Fighter, also dealt with a family in crisis. His newest screen work, Silver Linings Playbook, again has the family dynamic as its focus and concerns a subject that has been touched on more frequently in the cinema recently: mental illness. Going back to The Three Faces Of Eve to A Beautiful Mind the movies have attempted to portray this subject in a compassionate manner. And with Linings, Russell (working from Matthew Quick.s novel) attempts to meld this with a romantic (occasional) comedy. It.s quite the tightrope walk.
In the opening scenes of the film we meet Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) as he prepares to leave a Baltimore mental health facility.

Chicago – It’s funny that a movie with the word “Playbook” in its title is so clearly about how those of us who think we know exactly where life is taking us are merely kidding ourselves. Like so many of us, the hero of “Silver Linings Playbook,” Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper), has a plan to find happiness, to find his silver lining. David O. Russell’s excellent comedy is about how one needs to adjust their playbook, taking chances that are in front of them and going in a direction that require a new page in their life story. It’s smart, edgy, and filled with some of the best performances of the year. Almost every year there’s an adult comedy that really connects with audiences to the degree that even the Academy recognizes its quality (“Up in the Air,” “As Good As It Gets,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Sideways”). For...

2016 movie still trailing Michael Moore, Al Gore 2016 Obama's America, Dinesh D'Souza and John Sullivan's anti-Obama documentary, has surpassed the concert movie Katy Perry: Part of Me to become the second highest-grossing non-fiction film released in North America in 2012. By Sunday evening, D'Souza and Sullivan's right-wing doc -- current cume according to the web site Box Office Mojo stands at an estimated $27.66 million (as of Wed., September 13) -- should have also surpassed the nature doc Chimpanzee ($28.97 million) to become the year's top documentary in the United States and Canada. Worldwide, 2016 -- a 100% domestic sleeper hit like, say, the Tyler Perry movies (which have no audience overseas) -- remains behind both Chimpanzee (another domestic-only release) and Katy Perry: Part of Me. (Please scroll down for more details about the box-office performances of non-fiction films worldwide both in 2012 and "all-time.") As per numerous box-office reports, as the sixth biggest non-fiction film ever (or rather,...

Project X is not an off-shoot of the TV talent competition or a remake of the Matthew Broderick chimp thriller, but the latest in what seems to be an endless entry in the found footage / hand-held video genre, a film subset ( or conceit ) that is quickly wearing out its welcome at the multiplex. I suppose it really exploded with the box office smash over ten years ago with The Blair Witch Project and continues today with the horror series Paranormal Activity. Just weeks ago the format was used in the super-powered fantasy Chronicle. Now the shakey-cam is utilized for this new ” party ” comedy ( not the first found comedy - The Virginity Hit was a 2010 dud ). Will X fire up lots of big screen yucks or go down like warm stale beer?
The plot ( to be it loosely ) centers around the 24 hours of the eighteenth birthday of Thomas played by Thomas Mann...

Reinas / Queens (2005) Director: Manuel Gómez Pereira. Screenplay: Yolanda García Serrano, Joaquín Oristrell, and Manuel Gómez Pereira. Cast: Betiana Blum, Carmen Maura, Verónica Forqué, Marisa Paredes, Mercedes Sampietro, Gustavo Salmerón, Unax Ugalde, Hugo Silva, Daniel Hendler, Paco León, Raúl Jiménez, Tito Valverde, Lluís Homar Reinas / Queens is Manuel Gómez Pereira's dramatic comedy about five mothers (Verónica Forqué, Carmen Maura, Betiana Blum, Mercedes Sampietro, and Marisa Paredes) who must cope with their gay sons' (and their own) romantic problems as they all get ready for Spain's first mass gay wedding ceremony. The film, made by Warner Bros. Spain, has the look and feel of a glossy Hollywood flick — or of a non-English-language film begging for an American remake. But cheesy commercialism and sentimentality aside, Reinas boasts a couple of first-rate performances — Forqué as a nymphomaniac, Blum as a sweet-as-overripe-apple-pie Mom — and delivers more than a few good laughs. Additionally, the climactic big-wedding finale is quite touching.

Italian movie tycoon whose list of credits featured as many disasters as hits
The Italian-born film producer Dino De Laurentiis, who has died aged 91, will perhaps go down in movie history as the last "transatlantic" tycoon. Over a career spanning more than 60 years, producing films on both sides of the ocean, he had as many flops as hits. But De Laurentiis almost always succeeded in staying afloat.
In Rome, he produced Federico Fellini's Oscar-winning La Strada (1954) and the grandiose spectacular War and Peace (1956), but also made The Bible: In the Beginning (1966) and Waterloo (1970), which never recovered their costs. Relocating to the Us, he enjoyed success with Serpico (1973), Death Wish (1974), Three Days of the Condor (1975) and Conan the Barbarian (1982), but had financial disasters including Year of the Dragon (1985) and a failed food emporium, which he opened in New York. NBC has been struggling of late to find its identity as an entertainment programming network. With so many of television's best shows now appearing on cable channels (some of which are admittedly owned by parent NBC/Universal), the major networks have faced an increasing challenge to develop intriguing dramatic television, also facing as they do increased competition from video games, Internet downloads and other forms of entertainment.
But it's been hardest on NBC, which went through a serious staffing shakeup last December, searching for new blood and fresh ideas.
Has it worked? It's still too early to tell. Perhaps the most intriguing new offering from NBC is Day One, a futuristic drama from Heroes writer-producer Jesse Alexander.
