Universal is getting deeper into the Steven Spielberg business and will be carrying more of the weight of the movies he produces.
Universal and Spielberg’s Amblin Partners are forging a new pact under a multi-year deal, but as part of the new arrangement, Amblin Partners will no longer fully finance its own movies that it produces for Universal, and Universal Pictures will be providing some of the backing for Amblin Partners movies made under the deal.
Amblin will continue to produce other movies with rival studios, such as “West Side Story” at 20th Century or “Ready Player One” at Warner Bros., but Universal will have first-look status on all of Amblin’s theatrical projects.
The idea is to give the company “more creative and financial flexibility,” according to the press release announcing the deal. That should mean more opportunities for grown-up oriented projects, like “Green Book” and “1917” that were both released by Universal,...

Netflix’s February rotation has much more to offer than just romance movies, though if you’re looking to extend the Valentine’s Day mood, several options like the Reese Witherspoon rom-com “Your Place Or Mine” from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna will warm your heart. “La La Land” could also satisfy the longing for a love story, but self-love is the most important, and “Eat, Pray, Love” can help you with that.
For those not feeling the love, “Lyle Lyle, Crocodile” promises fun for the whole family with the help of music from “La La Land” composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Shawn Mendes, who voices a CGI crocodile who only expresses himself through song, also contributed an original song to the film.

For a new Super Bowl ad for cash-back shopping platform Rakuten, Alicia Silverstone slipped into a yellow tartan skirt to reprise her star-making turn in Amy Heckerling’s iconic 1995 comedy Clueless. But when it comes to the big game, it turns out Silverstone is just as adorably oblivious as Cher Horowitz.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever watched the Super Bowl in my life,” the actress tells THR by phone from Amsterdam, where she’s shooting a movie. “If I didn’t have this commercial for Rakuten, I wouldn’t know when the Super Bowl was.”
No doubt countless Clueless fans are glad she got that sorted out so they can see her opposite Elisa Donovan’s Amber in the well-known (and much quoted) debate scene. “It was nothing short of surreal,” Donovan told THR of getting the gang back together for the spot that was developed by Rakuten’s in-house marketing team,...

Hulu and Marvel’s ambitious, four-show animated series slate is down to one show — which will no longer have “Marvel” in its title.
The Disney-run streamer has renewed Hit-Monkey for a second season. The pickup comes more than a year after it debuted on Hulu in November 2021, and more than eight months after the only other series of the four to make it to air — Modok — was canceled after a single season.
The four series greenlit in 2019 came from the now defunct Marvel Television, headed by Jeph Loeb. They were positioned as an animated counterpart to the four-show Marvel TV lineup at Netflix (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist), complete with a culminating miniseries to be called The Offenders (playing off The Defenders team-up for the Netflix shows).
Marvel TV, however, was folded into Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios late in 2019, and Loeb departed. After that, two of...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
2022 has been one of those fascinating years where in the gauntlet of catching up on all of the lauded awards players that have been racking up the most placements on Best of Year lists, I’ve oddly been finding myself at quite a distance from the large majority of them. I won’t bemoan any specific titles (you can probably guess some of them from their lack of appearance here), but there’s been an odd feeling of disconnect for me with the ones people are talking about the most, the ones that will be vaunted on awards stages in the coming months.

I won’t bemoan any specific titles (you can probably guess some of them from their lack of appearance here), but there’s been an odd feeling of disconnect for me with the ones people are talking about the most, the ones that will be vaunted on awards stages in the coming months.
Rather than seeing this as a symbol of me being “out of touch” or having crossed over into some Armond White contrarian territory, however,...

Actor-singer-show host Aditya Narayan, who has lent his voice to the titular character in the Hindi version of animated children film ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’, faced quite a few challenges while he was working on the gig. He had to tweak his natural voice in terms of frequency for the character.
The singer said: “The primary challenge was to make Lyle my own, to make the Indian soundtrack sound like the original and not a dubbed version. Shawn Mendes, who has lent his voice to Lyle in the original soundtrack, has a thinner singing voice. So, his voice suits Lyle because the film shows Lyle’s journey from the time he is an infant to his teens.”
Apart from tweaking his tonal quality, he also had to wrap his head around fitting in the Hindi lyrics to the original melody which was composed keeping English lyrics in mind.

Brett Gelman’s favorite childhood film was the first “Muppets” movie, but it took him a second to narrow down his selection when TheWrap asked the “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile” star what film he was obsessed with as a kid.

Lyle the crocodile is not meant to be judged by his exterior, just like Bernard Waber’s childrens book from which he originated. If both were judged by their covers, readers and viewers would surely miss out.
“We made the movie because we loved the book,” said director Josh Gordon in an interview with TheWrap. “And the story behind the book, which to us was really about embracing joy and the power of love to save people and unlock potential.”
“Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” tells (and sings) the story of a stage-shy crocodile who has the voice of an angel (Shawn Mendes). Lyle gets discovered by Hector P. Valenti (Javier Bardem) in a last-ditch effort trip to Eddie’s Exotic Animals, where he hopes to find his hail mary magical animal act to make money and repay his growing debt. Gordon directed alongside longtime moviemaking partner Will Speck.

The creative mandate for the VFX team on “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” was to deliver a premium film with a singing and dancing CG character that both adults and children could believe was real.
Based on the children’s book by Bernard Weber, the film follows Josh (Winslow Fegley), a young boy struggling to fit in, his dad (Scoot McNairy) and stepmother (Constance Wu). Upon moving to the city, the family finds out their new home is inhabited by a singing crocodile named Lyle, voiced by Shawn Mendes.
Josh Gordon, who co-directed the film with Will Speck, says it was important that Lyle didn’t come off mean or menacing. Gordon explains, “That’s part of the character — he scares people — but Lyle is somebody who people judge by his cover. They don’t understand that underneath he is incredibly soulful and sweet.”

This weekend, moviegoers met a singing crocodile. Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is a musical with a touch of animation courtesy of its singing and dancing leading man. Well, more like a croc. With Shawn Mendes covering the vocals, Lyle is a sweet reptile with some serious vocal talent. Yet, he can only sing.
Along with Mendes, the film also stars Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, Brett Gelman, Winslow Figley, and Javier Bardem. And frankly, watching Mr. Bardem sing and dance is quite a delight. Josh Gordon and Will Speck direct the film with charm and clearly, a bit of humor.
Recently, we spoke with the men behind the music, Mr. Gordon and Mr. Speck. It was terrific talking with these filmmakers about merging animation with live-action. The two also discussed the casting of Javier Bardem and Winslow Figley. The cast is quite good here, and the director shows respect for the source material.

Bernard Waber’s “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” book series is now a major motion picture. The live action/CGI musical comedy stars a whole host of names, including one Canadian singer as the voice of a talented crocodile. The film will feature songs performed by star Shawn Mendes and written by the songwriting team behind “The Greatest Showman” — Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — with an ensemble cast that includes Javier Bardem and Constance Wu.
For “Lyle,” Pasek and Paul are joined by Ari Afsar, Emily Gardner, Xu Hall, Mark Sonnenblick and Joriah Kwamé. Will Speck and Josh Gordon directed and produced the film, with a screenplay by Will Davies. Hutch Parker also produces, and executive producers include Kevin K. Vafi, Dan Wilson, Robert J. Although the concept behind Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile – that a singing and dancing crocodile is afflicted with crippling stage fright – falls a bit on the side of unbelievability (just a bit), the heart and soul of this film is so spot on and the performances of all involved prove just as engaging, that this ultimately plays as one of the more entertaining family films in recent memory.

Josh Gordon and Will Speck’s live-action musical “Lyle Lyle Crocodile” lives up to it name. The story, about a crocodile named Lyle voiced by Shawn Mendes that can dance and sing, features songs penned by the award-winning Justin Paul and Benj Pasek. The dup then brought in a team of songwriters to carve out toe-tapping, infectious earworms.
From the get-go songwriting and composing duo Pasek and Paul knew Lyle would be a singing crocodile which made the project all the more exciting for them. “But when the voice actor became Shawn Mendes, that really informed a lot of the style and what we were going to write for,” explains Pasek.
With Mendes attached, the writers behind “The Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” could blend musical theater with contemporary pop. “The aim was to create something with his voice,” says Pasek.

Plot: Based on the children’s books by Bernard Waber, Lyle is the story of a crocodile who happens to know how to belt out a tune.
Review: Lyle Lyle Crocodile is a children’s book series written by author Bernard Weber. The story revolves around a family who find they have a crocodile living in the Victorian brownstone they just purchased. Starring Javier Bardem, Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy, and Winslow Fegley, Lyle presents a new take on mixing animation with live action. And speaking of animated, you’ll also find Shawn Mendes as the musical voice behind Lyly the Crocodile. He doesn’t ever talk, but he can sure sing. And many of Mr. Mendes’s fanbase will likely be thrilled to hear his vocal talents on display. Co-directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck, let’s see what all this croc action has in store.
This adaptation begins with showman Hector P.

So, are you looking for a “family-friendly” flick to perhaps introduce your “pre-k’ tots to the wonders of moviegoing? Well, many parents may be leery of much of the fare, since the “kid aimed” movies are often part of an ongoing franchise or based on a line of toys, video/computer games, or TV shows, perhaps resembling a feature-length commercial to provide “product synergy”. So where are the big-screen adaptations of classic children’s books, one that may inspire the wee ones” to (gasp) read? Well, we’ve got one opening “wide” this weekend based on a beloved tale that’s almost sixty years old. Oh, and it’s filled with music often sung by an adorable animal.

September turned out to be the lowest grossing month since May 2021, and by pre-pandemic standards it was the lowest grossing since 1996. Though a few individual films did okay, there’s no denying that the 319 million cume for the entire month was a horrendous return. Hopefully it will never be repeated, and thankfully the changing of the box office seasons is upon us. This weekend is the last of the doldrums, and the one-two punch of Halloween Ends next weekend and Black Adam the following weekend will bring the numbers back up to levels we haven’t seen since July, with the bigger fireworks show coming November 11 when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens. The year’s final quarter may not live up to pre-pandemic years, but it is still a huge relief after the two month dry spell. We just had 10 weekends in a row (11 after this weekend) below 100 million, with...

It's a bit surprising that Bernard Waber's children's story "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" hasn't already been made into a theatrical kids' film. After all, ever since its publication back in 1965, countless children have learned about the power of friendship and good Samaritanism through this friendly crocodile. While there was a straight-to-tv special released in 1987, this timeless tale hadn't been explored or reinvented -- until now.
Directors Will Speck and Josh Gordon signed on to direct a new script based on the classic story in 2021, with a screenplay written by William Davies. While the filmmaking duo was mostly known for PG-13 and R-rated comedies, this new production proved that they had the right chops for family entertainment as well. /Film recently spoke with Speck and Gordon to discuss the movie's extensive prep process, as well as what it was like filming elaborate scenes without the show's main star on set.

The movie format where a character beloved by kids becomes a CGI creature, who is then plugged into a live-action universe, is one of the most casually technically astonishing of all popcorn genres — and, as often as not, one of the most stunted. It almost doesn’t matter if the hero is Garfield or Stuart Little, Alvin and the Chipmunks or Sonic the Hedgehog: The way this genre has descended from the noisy bravura of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” the actors tend to be reduced to one-note stooges who get stuck in too many green-screen reaction shots, whereas the critter at the center — the animated star — is, almost inevitably, a preening chatterbox who wears out his welcome by pelting the live-action players, and the audience, with too many bad punchlines.

Whatever associations you may have with Lyle the crocodile, you probably didn’t imagine him crooning like Shawn Mendes. Based on Bernard Waber’s beloved children’s book originally published in 1965, the existence of a “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” movie proves nothing is sacred in Hollywood — especially nostalgic childhood storybooks.
If a CGI crocodile with the dulcet tenor of a pop idol seems at odds with Waber’s freehand illustrations, Javier Bardem is perfectly in step as eccentric showman Hector P. Valenti, star of stage and screen. Bardem’s lesser-seen playful side is on full display in “Lyle,” as he hoofs his way across New York City with madcap gusto. The minute he leaves the croc to fend for himself at the house on East 88th Street, his absence is sorely felt by all — not just lonely Lyle. Along with a few bouncy numbers from “The Greatest Showman” duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul,...

It was very New York of children’s author-illustrator Bernard Waber to turn an urban myth about misplaced reptiles into a beloved series of bedtime books about a city family adopting a friendly crocodile. And it’s very Hollywood to want to turn that beloved series of bedtime books into the unwieldy, CGI-splotched musical pablum that is “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.”
Even with a mustachioed Javier Bardem doing his bonkers best to evoke a Fellini-esque sideshow vibe as flamboyant entertainer Hector P. Valenti, the titular amphibian’s first owner, if you didn’t know that the frenetic and tinny “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” had modestly charming literary origins, you’d swear the title of this corporatized kiddie-franchise fodder was a cheeky alternative acronym for LLC.
But hey, there has to be something at the other end of the quality spectrum from the joyful do-good magic of “Paddington,” and this overwrought, clunky creature-teacher-feature...

When you think of life-sized animated crocodiles (and who doesn’t, at least once in a while?), you don’t imagine that their singing voice is like Shawn Mendes’. No slight toward the 24-year-old pop star intended, but shouldn’t a crocodile sound a bit weightier? When the title character of the new live-action/CGI musical comedy Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile opens his very large mouth to sing in a high-pitched tenor voice, he sounds less like a giant-toothed predatory reptile than, I don’t know…a salamander, maybe.
Based on Bernard Waber’s best-selling book series, the film falls easily into the family movie sub-genre in which children, and often their parents and other adults, learn life lessons from a very large animal. When I was a kid, I was a sucker for Clifford the Big Red Dog (the subject of his own movie,...

The Oregon Trail video game is being made into a movie musical, provided it doesn’t die of dysentery
I’d imagine most of us have played The Oregon Trail at some point in our lives. After all, it was one of the very few video games that you were actually allowed to play in school — In that vein, does anyone else remember Math Blaster Plus? According to Collider, the iconic Oregon Trail video game is in the process of being developed into a movie musical by the folks behind Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile directors Josh Gordon and Will Speck are collaborating with their songwriting team Pasek and Paul (Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) on the Oregon Trail movie. “We were talking about what we could cook up next, because we really want to do another musical,” Speck said. “They mentioned [Oregon Trail], and we now have the rights to it, and we’re putting it together alongside them and some other exciting people.”

Do-re-mi-fa dys-en-ter-y! A musical adaptation of the classic computer game “The Oregon Trail” is in the works from the team behind “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile.”
In an interview with Collider, filmmakers Will Speck and Josh Gordon shared that they have been collaborating with their “Lyle, Lyle” songwriting team Pasek and Paul (Benj Pasek and Justin Paul), working to crack a darkly comedic musical version of the video game.
Although no studio is currently attached, the group shared that it has obtained the rights to “The Oregon Trail.” The report states that the project is in “active development.”
“People are very protective of their IP as they should be,” Speck said. “These guys have so far been great partners in allowing us to take it and run with it. Also, we’ve made them producing partners, basically.”
