Welcome to the latest instalment of a brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
A Yak with Dak
Dak uses the Upfront space to plug alternative/independent comics, whilst also going out of his way to say Comics Interview strives to include them. Personally, I feel he is selling himself short in that regard. In the eight issues I have looked at so far, I feel the alternatives/indies have had decent representation. Look at #6 you had Berke Breathed talking Bloom County right alongside huge fanboy porn in the shape of Jla vs The Avengers! Comico was featured last time out, and the comics of First have been featured. It would be interesting to see how the early days of those two, their success and...

Like many old farts, I think it’s been a long time since Saturday Night Live was reliably funny. A lot of this is nostalgia for my youth, when I was cool and cutting-edge. More, alas, is that I think Lorne Michaels tends to stick to what he thinks works and not to take chances and rock the boat. Too many sketches rely on catch-phrases or stock characters, or the surprise visit of a guest star.
For me, the last straw was letting Trump host the show when he was running for president. I thought it was antithetical to humor to suck up to power that way, and Trump’s racism, sexism, xenophobia and general lack of class are pretty much what good comedy is supposed to attack. It’s much funnier to point out that the Emperor has no clothes than to laugh at the naked peasants.

Welcome back to another edition of Lrm's Fantasy Fridays, where myself and Jeremy Scully- two real-life best friends- pretend to be studio execs by calling some major shots. In the past, we rounded out the cast of Ben Affleck's The Batman, we assigned directors for several major upcoming superhero flicks, and today we set our sights on Marvel and it's wonderful relationship with Netflix.
See, say what you will about Marvel's exploits on the ABC network like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but their work on Netflix has been undeniably stellar. With shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage, which are all leading up towards Iron Fist and a The Defenders crossover event, Marvel Studios has shown that they can make some amazing television with their partners over at Netflix.
With that in mind, the two of us mused about what other Marvel properties should get the Netflix series treatment.

Less than 24 hours removed from the murder of two of their colleagues on live television, the Wdbj-tv morning news crew returned to the airwaves.
At 6:45 Am local time on Thursday, anchor Kim McBroom joined hands with weatherman Leo Hirsbrunner and fellow anchor Steve Grant, who joined the team from sister station Kytv in Springfield, Mo., and asked their viewers to join them in observing a moment of silence in remembrance of Alison Parker, 24, and Adam Ward, 27, who were shot and killed during a live broadcast on Wednesday morning.

One day after Wdbj-7 reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward were killed by a former employee of the Virginia CBS affiliate where they worked, the station aired a moment of silence to remember the pair.
“We want to pause and reflect, and we want to share with you once again what made these two so special, not just to us, but to all our hometowns that Wdbj-7 serves,” anchor Kimberly McBroom said, clasping hands with weatherman Leo Hirsbrunner and Steve Grant, an anchor from sister station Kytv in Springfield, Mo.

Heartbroken. Wdbj-tv reporters observed a moment of silence for reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward at the start of their program on Thursday, Aug. 27, just one day after their late colleagues were killed during a live broadcast in Moneta, Va. In the emotional moment, anchor Kim McBroom joined hands with fellow anchor Steve Grant and weatherman Leo Hirsbrunner at 6:45 a.m., the same time of the shooting. "Joining hands here on the desk," she said. "It’s the only way to do it." Parker, 24, and Ward, [...]...

The buddy picture was a staple of the 1970s and 1980s, possibly dating back to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid but it’s been largely missing from more recent Hollywood fare. As a result, you have to given Universal Studios credit for recognizing the somewhat fresh approach in the Boom! Studios graphic novel 2Guns. Steve Grant paired two men in a drug story that felt familiar but with every action, things were never what they appeared, freshening the entire concept. Add in the charismatic Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, stir, and you have a crime story worth taking a look.
Out now on Blu-ray from Universal Home Entertainment, the film starts off with a robbery and never really slows down. Washington is Robert Trench, Bobby T, and Wahlberg is Michael Stigman, Stig, paired up to rob Mexican criminal drug lord Papi Greco (Edward James Olmos) of $3 million in cash.

’2 Guns’ weekend box office: Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington pairing disappointing? A limp "low $20 million" range, is what 2 Guns U.S. distributor Universal claims it’s expecting at the North American box office from the first-ever pairing of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg — as momentous a cinematic occasion, if the American media is to believed, as the first pairing of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? back in 1962. Of course, Universal’s lowball figure is an excuse for the studio to claim, "Omigod! 2 Guns has performed way beyond what any and all of us were expecting!" — as long as the Washington / Wahlberg combo brings in $25 million or more. (Photo: Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg in 2 Guns.) Well, Universal apparently made a good p.r. movie, as the R-rated, Baltasar Kormákur-directed 2 Guns collected a barely acceptable $10 million from 3,306 North American theaters on Friday according to...

In today's News Attack we have updates on the Carmen Sandiego movie in the works, Jack Bender's next directing project, and a new role for James Marsden.
Lost director Jack Bender has a thriller he is developing for Legendary pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Max Brooks (writer, World War Z) came up with the idea, and David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans, The Walking Dead) is writing the script. Unfortunately there are no details about the film now, but imagine the minds that brought us Lost, World War Z, and The Walking Dead coming together on one film, and you have pure awesome incarnated. More news on this as it develops.
You may recall that Carmen Sandiego is being turned into a feature film. Jennifer Lopez is currently producing the project and is eyeing the starring role. Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After, Jack the Giant Killer) has...

Denzel Washington has entered early talks with Universal Pictures to star in 2 Guns, an action heavy thriller that already has Mark Wahlberg attached to star, reuniting with his Contraband director Baltasar Kormakur.
Based on Steve Grant’s graphic novel at Boom! Studios, the two lead ‘pulp’ action thriller revolves around two lawmen – a DEA agent and an undercover naval officer – who must investigate each other as they have been tasked to steal mob money. It has been adapted for the screen by Brotherhood writer Blake Masters.
Previously the film was setup as a reunion of The Fighter players Mark Wahlberg and director David O.Russell but the latter bailed and Wahlberg quickly hired his Contraband director to replace him. At that point the film was also to be an action/comedy, but with the new director and Washington’s appointment, I’m thinking it will be much more the former and more serious.

Has this ever happened to you at a commercial callback? It's a car insurance ad. The 30-something director, who's wearing all black because that shows everyone what a hip, edgy guy he is, asks the actors to pick an animal. Now, he says, play out the scene—involving a car crash and the subsequent conversation with the insurance adjuster—as that animal. No, this isn't on the storyboards. Sure, he just took the Acting Exercises class in film school. Do you do it, however unlikely the commercial will be shot that way? Or do you think, "I'm not playing along with this crap!" and refuse? Well, if that's what the young-hip-edgy director wants to see, do you think you stand any chance of getting cast if you don't play ball? Even if he's an idiot, you've got to make him believe you'll be nice to have on the set all day.

Emmerdale star Deena Payne has revealed more details about her recent work on a live music show. The actress, who plays Viv Hope in the ITV1 soap, teamed up with her guitarist partner Steve Grant to create Barockestra, which gives classical favourites like Vivaldi's Four Seasons a rock-style twist. She first discussed the project on This Morning in July. Payne, who had a musical theatre career before joining Emmerdale in 1993, choreographed dance sequences and also customised authentic Baroque outfits for the production. She worked on the show during her recent one-year break from the Yorkshire-based drama. She told the Yorkshire Evening Post: "Emmerdale took me away from all that I knew in the dance world, so I absolutely loved doing Barockestra. (more)...
