[Youtube "jc6oqtcOi_E"] At first, Texas singer Luke Wade and his duet partner, known simply as Griffin, from Nashville, were having an awkward time rehearsing the Paul McCartney and Wings hit "Maybe I'm Amazed." But then their coach Pharrell Williams, with guidance from his team mentor Alicia Keys, lit an Aretha-inspired soul fire under the rock song, leading to an epic, competitive moment on The Voice as the Season 7 battle rounds kicked off Monday. With each singer taking a verse, Wade went raw and bluesy, and then Griffin, a Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra fan, smoothed it on out. Their harmonies took on...

The Voice battle rounds began, putting coaches Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine in the hot seat, and prompting some surprising steals.
Team Pharrell: Elyjuh René vs. Maiya Sykes
Team Pharrell kicked the night off with the very first battle, pitting Elyjuh René up against Maiya Sykes, a four-chair turn around. Elyjuh screamed with joy, and even began to tear up a little, when he saw Alicia Keys in the room. Not only that, but the duo was tasked with singing Keys’ own “If I Ain’t Got You” – with Alicia Keys sitting behind the piano. Sykes seemed like the favorite to win in rehearsals, but she was gracious, giving Elyjuh some help hitting the high notes.
Both gave strong performances, but in the end Pharrell stuck with Elyjuh, impressed with how he handled the high notes, saying he wanted to see how much he’d grow.

Like those old episodes of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom where the straggler impala gets picked off by the hungry lioness, The Voice‘s Battle Rounds are compelling (though not necessarily comforting) viewing.
Only the strongest voices — or at least those attached to the youngest, doe-eyed-iest, most social-media-approved bodies — survive the two-person, one-song contests.
And while I understand those who wince at the inherent cruelty of whittling a pool of 48 singers down to 32 (eight Battle “losers” get second chances via The Steal), it’s nevertheless a necessary evil. I mean, let’s be honest: After three consecutive weeks of Blind Auditions,...

Dallas (AP) — Bruce Springsteen took the stage holding basketball on the last day of a three-day music festival in Dallas for the Ncaa Final Four. "This has something to do with basketball. Am I right?" he asked the crowd Sunday before he and the E Street Band launched into Van Halen's "Jump" at the Ncaa March Madness Music Festival. They followed that up with some of their own hits, including "Hungry Heart," ''Glory Days," and "Dancing in the Dark." It was raining and chilly for most of Sunday. Nate Ruess, the lead singer of the pop band fun., rolled around on the stage, soaking himself, and said, "Dare you to do that, Boss" — later adding that he didn't think Springsteen would because he was "smarter than that." Fun. sang hits including "Carry On" and "We Are Young" before an encore featuring "Some Nights." Later, as a light rain fell,...

Doctor Who star Karen Gillan was cast as 60s supermodel Jean Shrimpton in a new TV drama - and then found herself face-to-face with the star's former flame David Bailey.
Gillan, 24, stars as Shrimpton in the BBC4 story We'll Take Manhattan, which explores the explosive love affair between "The Shrimp" and the world-famous photographer, played by Aneurin Barnard.
The Scottish actress told the Radio Times that she had not been able to meet Shrimpton, who now runs a hotel in Penzance and avoids public appearances.
But she found herself posing for David Bailey in a Vogue magazine shoot - and says he was as formidable as his reputation.
Karen had researched Bailey (right) and thought she had an idea of what to expect.
She told the magazine: "He's a funny one, he plays mind games to provoke his subjects."

But the journeyman troubadour, a Lone Star fixture for more than three decades, took his energy and applied it to his craft.
