Inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy andWestern Heritage Museum in 1992.
In 1914, he was arrested for rustling cattle and sentenced to serve 15 months in the Nevada State Prison.
Best known for the beloved "Smokey, The One Man Horse" (1926), which won the coveted Newberry Medal for children's literature.
As of 2003, all of his books are still in print.

He died of alcoholism.
