The German film industry is eagerly awaiting the appointment of the Berlin Film Festival’s new director, expected to be announced tomorrow, and as the guessing game surrounding the choice shifts into high gear, one thing looks increasingly clear: the new head will face considerable financial and political challenges at the Berlinale.
Speculation in the local industry has been rife with likely candidates to succeed Carlo Chatrian and Mariëtte Rissenbeek, who have co-led the Berlinale as artistic and executive directors since 2020 and will step down after this year’s edition when their respective mandates end.

European Film Academy CEO Matthijs Wouter Knol has denied he is a candidate to become the next director of the Berlin Film Festival.
Rumors were rife ahead of the Academy’s European Film Awards ceremony in Berlin this weekend that he was in pole position for the role.
The search is currently on for a new Berlinale director to replace Executive Director Mariette Rissenbeek and Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian who are due to step down after the 2024 edition, with an announcement expected at press conference on Tuesday.
In an interview with Deadline ahead of the ceremony in Berlin, Wouter Knol categorically ruled out that he was in the frame, chiefly because he felt had a lot more to do at the European Film Academy.

“Hesitation Wound” and “Hollywoodgate” were named winners at the Zurich Film Festival, as the 19th edition of the Swiss festival came to a close.
Selman Nacar’s drama “Hesitation Wound” impressed the Feature Film Competition jury.
“Moral issues are a frequent underlying theme in many films, but the dilemma facing the main character in this film is really strongly felt here,” argued the jury, which comprised president Anton Corbijn, Finola Dwyer, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, Juho Kuosmanen and Bryce Nielsen.
Praising “wonderful” Tülin Özen, cast as a lawyer struggling at home and at work – “a woman forever on the verge of either breakthrough or breakdown,” wrote Variety – they added: “It’s a film that stayed with the majority of the jury throughout the festival and even though it was a fight with two other contenders, it became our favorite. The film will play in Zff’s Sounds section celebrating relationship between film and music.
“The film Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin is a twofold minor sensation. Firstly, the Zff gets to present it to the public as a world premiere,” said Zff Artistic Director Christian Jungen. “Secondly, the protagonist Peter Doherty will present the film in person.”
The bio-doc chronicles the English rock star who, after reaching the pinnacle of his career, sinks into the depths of a serious drug addiction.
The intimate portrait was shot by director and musician Katia deVidas, who followed the wild life of The Libertines frontman at close quarters for over the course of a decade and is now the artist’s wife.

Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman picked up her Career Achievement Award at Zurich Film Festival on Thursday. She also gave another Golden Eye statuette to Robert IJserinkhuijsen, winner of the 10th International Film Music Competition. Portman was this year’s jury president.
“She is an exceptional composer, a fine storyteller. She paints feelings with sounds. With her, longing can sound mysterious and sadness can sound like hope,” said artistic director Christian Jungen, celebrating an inspiring career in an industry “long-dominated by men.”
“Her compositions are timeless, personal and yet universal,” he added.
“My primary concern is to write music that really, really fits the film. And serves the film. I always wish to write music that has integrity and I will endeavor to continue to do that,” Portman said.
The composer – who won her Oscar for Douglas McGrath’s “Emma” – will now turn her attention to Showtime miniseries “King Shaka,” executive produced by Antoine Fuqua.

Laura Mora’s “The Kings of the World” was named Best Film at the Zurich Film Festival Saturday.
The jury, led by Asghar Farhadi and featuring Clio Barnard, Daniel Dreifuss, Petra Volpe and Piodor Gustafsson, was taken with the coming-of-age drama about young friends living on the streets of Medellín, one that has triumphed at San Sebastian as well. Film Factory Entertainment handles sales.
“I am so happy the jury voted for it. I am convinced this film will stand the test of time,” artistic director Christian Jungen told Variety.
“It shows that film can be an art form, but it also provides social criticism on the situation in Colombia. Where poor, regular people can’t easily access their rights.”
Mora got the idea for the story while casting her feature debut “Killing Jesus,” she told Variety back in August.

The 17th Zurich Film Festival concluded Saturday with wins for Jonas Carpignano‘s “A Chiara” and Fred Baillif’s “La Mif,” with Renato Borrayo Serrano’s “Life of Ivanna” named best documentary.
The jury, led by Daniel Brühl, and featuring director Stéphanie Chuat, former Berlinale chief Dieter Kosslick and producer Andrea Cornwell, decided to award “A Chiara” with the prize for the best film of the Feature Film Competition. The Italian-French-Swedish-Danish co-production sees a teenage girl in a Calabrian town discovering her father’s criminal involvement.
“We were swept away by the modern take on the Italian neorealist tradition, the exceptional use of music and sound design and the outstanding performances by Swami Rotolo and her family, all making their film debuts. This film is nothing less than a cinematic masterpiece,” argued the jury, calling the decision “unanimous.”

This is the first time a Bond movie has been in the official selection of a festival, according to the fest’s artistic director Christian Jungen.
“We are extremely pleased to be one of the first in the world to show our audience the most recent Bond adventure,” Jungen said. “We fought for months to get this premiere and had to negotiate every last detail with the distribution company Universal.
