- Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union from 1938-46.
- Has frequently been mistaken for Lev Trotskiy due to their close physical resemblances. Many photos or news footage have Kalinin misidentified as Trotsky.
- Although the city of Königsberg was renamed after him (Kaliningrad), there is no record that he ever lived in or even visited the city.
