Nintendo reveals that Super Mario Kart's genesis lay in an abandoned multiplayer mode for its other arcade racer, F-Zero...
Before Nintendo went out of their way to ensure that Mario conquered every known genre, 1992's Super Mario Kart came along and caught some people by surprise. "A Mario Kart racing game?" said the masses as their monocles quivered in dread. "Well I never!"

Twenty-five years later, we're gearing up for the Switch re-release of Mario Kart 8; a game that many feel was the Wii U's best title. That's an impressive leap forward in cultural relevance made all the more strange by Mario Kart's true origin.

In celebration of the 30 years since Nintendo released the Nes here in North America, we decided to round-up the Sos troops and compile a list of the 100 greatest games published and or developed by Nintendo, and released exclusively to their consoles. Here is part nine. **** 20. Duck Hunt Developer(s) Nintendo R&D1 Publisher(s) Nintendo Platform(s) Nes Na October 18, 1985 Genre(s) Light gun shooter, Hunting Simulator - First released in 1984, Duck Hunt is based on an electronic toy by Nintendo designers Gunpei Yokoi and Masayuki Uemura. The incorporation of the Nes Zapper became a key selling point, as it incorporated the idea of an arcade shoot-’em-up into the home. The game only had one objective – shoot the ducks and avoid getting the smug, laughing dog at the end of each round. Duck Hunt had a concept that is easy to follow yet quickly repetitive, but due to its...

We've trimmed the fat over the last few weeks and the real battle is almost here. The final four have been picked but only two can carry one. Who will it be? Round four is go!
Aiden Pearce (Watch_Dogs) Vs. Third Streets Saints Potus (Saints Row IV)
The margin between the two Ubisoft franchises was razor thin but Aiden sunk Edward leaving "Assassin's Creed IV" waterloggered. Now he'll have to deal with the superhuman Commander-in-chief from "Saints Row IV!"
The Supreme Being (Godus) Vs. Joel and Ellie (The Last of Us)
Looks like the Supreme Being lived up to its name but if Joel and Ellie have learned anything, it's how to survive.

Not gonna lie, I've always wanted to do this. Coolest dad ever and all around great guy rents out theatre so his son and friends can play video games!
Following the thread, Redditor "agnstdgrain" spent about "$300 for 5 hours" which included unlimited pizza and popcorn for his son, Jonah, thirteenth birthday. That's not nearly as much as I would have guessed. Perhaps it was on an off day, but either way this seems like a very doable thing to do if split amongst a few friends.
Jonah got to play all his favorite games form "Halo" to "Portal" to "Mincraft" and many more. Check out more picks here.
Bonus points for keeping screaming babies, loudmouths, and clickity texters out of the theatre.

One of the bigger surprises to come out of E3 was the news that "Final Fantasy Versus Xiii," Square Enix' long-awaited action-rpg, had been re-named and re-branded as "Final Fantasy Xv." It seems like a minor thing to casual observers, but for anybody following the game's ins and outs (and lack thereof) since it was announced in 2006 (!), it's a reminder of how much Square Enix' hoary relics have changed in the past few years.
Here's the backstory: when "Final Fantasy Xiii" was announced, it was as part of a larger collection called "Fabula Nova Crystallis." That mouthful was supposed to be the thematic and narrative link between "Final Fantasy Xiii," "Final Fantasy Agito Xiii," and "Final Fantasy Versus Xiii."
The story at the time was that the core, numbered series was for tradition (read: turn-based) role-playing games, while spin-offs like "Agito" and "Versus" were free to explore real-time combat.

Iron Galaxy is no slouch when it comes to breathing new life into old arcade games -- Capcom has used this studio before with "Marvel vs. Capcom" and "Darkstalkers " -- proving that there's still interest in reliving classic games. This time, they're tapped to resurrect two arcade brawlers for download with "Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara." Packaged as a single download, fans of the fantasy-based beat 'em ups will feel right at home and will have new features to keep them playing.
As with most sides-croller games, "Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara" follows a basic formula of move to the right, beat up a bunch of hapless foes, repeat until the level ends. What's really cool is that both of these games have a fairly robust story given the traditionally limited time you'd be able to play at an arcade. The plot is basic in some much that there's a...

We at the MTV Multiplayer offices -- more a secret lair, really, nestled somewhere in the Adirondacks -- have been remiss in our coverage of Tom Francis' "Gunpoint," a stealth-puzzle game by way of electrical engineering and film noir. By that, I mean that we haven't covered it at all, which is a mistake because it's proving to be quite popular.
In "Gunpoint," you play as a spy tasked with stealing Important Documents, and you do this by re-wiring and re-structuring each level to suit your needs. It's a nifty piece of design -- having been nominated for a 2012 Independent Games Festival Award in that category -- but the new story is that, per Francis' blog, "Gunpoint" only cost about $30 to make and started turning a profit about a minute after he opened pre-orders for the game late last month.

It's one thing to know that a sequel to Dennaton Games' breakout bash-'em-up "Hotline Miami" was in the works -- the two-man team of Cactus Söderstöm and Denis Wedin have been casually tweeting about it since late last year -- but it's another to know that it's been officially announced or to have a gruesome teaser trailer as visual proof of its existence.
Accompanied by a sparse guitar riff and an unnervingly repetitious phone operator, the "Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number" trailer introduces its predecessor's hallmarks: top-down perspectives, bright neons, pixelated anti-heroes,alarmingly violent pipe-blows to the head.
As publisher Devolver Digital's press release put it so succinctly: "You’re a murderer. You murder people. Again. And again."
While the ultra-violent game mechanics seem largely unchanged, "Wrong Number" introduces a handful of different playable characters -- some from the original "Hotline Miami," some not -- to sort...

The 1960's prequel to the clandestined Xcom series will get some post launch Dlc that will expand beyond the top secret origin story involving Agent Carter.
Nothing specific has been dedtailed but supposedly it'll have a strong narrative drive. Of course Xbox 360 users will have early access but the Dlc will hit all platforms eventually.
From the release:
“The alternate 1962 universe that we’ve created for The Bureau is vast and there are many more stories to tell about the early days of Xcom,” said Morgan Gray, development director at 2K Marin. “We’re excited that our stories will provide a new perspective on the war effort, much like how our critically acclaimed Minvera’s Den Dlc for BioShock 2 allowed us to present a unique perspective of Rapture.”
Hopefully, this means that the Dlc will focus more on the intense squad dynamics and desperate struggle for Earth rather than a basic "horde-mode" arena.

Sony's latest presentation of 'Beyond: Two Souls' elicited its share of "What the…?" reactions. Seeing Jodie Holmes (played by Ellen Page) in an African combat setting made one wonder if David Cage and his team sold out to 'Call of Duty' audiences. Yet you need to remember that 'Beyond' spans 15 years of Jodie's life and this scene was merely one of many episodes of the game. If you were still hoping to follow this woman's life as a social outcast, Sony's latest trailer assures that 'Beyond' will have more than enough of that.
I was part of that group of gamers who actually liked the fixed camera exploration and Qte-intensive gameplay of 'Heavy Rain'. I was also didn't mind that, despite the overselling of choice and multiple outcomes, most of the chapters ended the same way. That's what I suspect will be the case for 'Beyond: Two Souls'.

Sony fans have more to celebrate after their chosen console dominated E3 -- this time with a zany, insane, open world crime spree thanks to Ps+. Yup, "Saints Row: The Third" is the next big game to be included on Plus' update.
Besides "Saints Row," memebers will have access to "Gods Eater Burst" for PSP/Vita.
From the site:
In Gods Eater Burst, the earth is plagued by altered beasts known as Aragami. The player is a new member of an elite force created to wield the God Arc (the only weapon capable of killing the Aragami) and devour the hostile gods. The player’s mission is to defeat the Aragami and gather material from them for research, but the player soon will realize they are being drawn into a giant conspiracy that will irreversibly alter the fate of humanity.

At last week's E3 we had a chance to chat with the head of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime about a wide range of topics relating to the company. With the business out of the way in yesterday's post, today we're dig in to some of the lighter points: Nintendo's support of indie developers, the success of the 3Ds, the surprising origins of "New Super Luigi U," and which character Reggie chooses in "Super Mario 3D World" (hint: it's not Mario).
Multiplayer: Over the last few months, one of the things that I've seen in the press, and in talking to people, is that indie developers are singing your praises. What makes now the right time for Nintendo to be going into that market in such a big way?
Fils-Aime: You know, dating back to the Wii and the DSi days, we've always thought that experienced, but independent developers are a key opportunity.

As a Disney-published game, it was only a matter of time before the immensely popular 'Where's My Water?' would find itself tied to a familiar Disney property. Somewhat similar to the thoughtfully repurposed 'Temple Run' (into a mobile game of Pixar's 'Brave'), 'Where's My Mickey?' is more than just a reskin starring Mickey Mouse.
You still need to manipulate the environment to get water to the bottom of the screen, though you now have water-retaining clouds to help in your puzzle solving. This creates new situations involving rain and plant mechanics, spread across over 100 levels.
Visually and thematically tied to the recently announced 'Mickey Mouse' shorts, 'Where's My Mickey?' is packaged as an episodic collection of puzzles. The game retains much of the show's gag-intensive charm and retro aesthetic.
The series starts off with five episodes including a Goofy spin-off game and...

"Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom" and its sequel "Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara" emerge from the mist today for your WiiU, PS3 and Xbox 360.
Both of the classic arcade titles have been updated with smoother graphics and brand new features. As with many of the other arcade revamps from Iron Galaxy, a vault has been added providing extra challenges awarding skillful players with bonuses such as artwork. You can also customize your experience with a virtual dip switch to alter the behavior of the games, making them harder -- or my case much, much eaiser. These old arcade games were brutal!
Furthermore, players will have a Character Visualizer that tallies various data points to compare against friends. So that's pretty neat.

"Mario Kart 8" wasn't the only newly announced Mario game that Nintendo's longtime employee Hideki Konno had a hand in creating. Shown for the first time last week at E3, "Super Mario 3D World" also has the head of Nintendo's Software Development Group No 1's fingerprints on it, albeit they are quite faint.
With the reintroduction of Princess Peach as a playable character in a Mario game for the first time since "Super Mario Bros. 2" on the Nes ("Super Princess Peach" aside), Nintendo dug deep into their archives to pull some game mechanics from one of Mr. Konno's first titles, "Doki Doki Panic." While some fans in the west may not be familiar with this game specifically, they are likely to be aware that it was the title that was ported for the U.S. release of "Smb 2." When the game jumped from the Famicom Disk System to the Nintendo Entertainment System,...

It's nearing the end of the work day over here so I don't have anyhting better to do than kick back and watch a giant chunk of the next "Killzone" game along with some developer expositon. What's that? You're bored at work, too? Then grab a coffee and donut and check out a bit of the gameplay from E3.
The demo starts off exactly like the Sony presentation in February, taking the a Vetkan soldier through a surprise ambush launched by the devious Helghast. After the live gameplay the developers, Guerrilla Games, talk about the art direction of the next installment. It's really interesting have the arts leads discuss the decisions involved with creating a new look using form, color, and design.
Watching some of that gameplay, "Shadow Fall" is shaping up to be a knock-out in the graphics department. Of course, if you remember the time just before the PS3 launch,...

Well there's a little bit more good news for Xbox One fans -- game prices are staying the same. The industry standard of $59.99 was set at the beginning of the current cycle and so far it looks to remain there.
Talking to Gamespot, Microsoft confirmed that there won't be a price hike for the next-gen games. So there's at least that.
Conversly, the PS4 "will offer games with prices ranging from $0.99 to the more traditional $60 range," Jack Tretton Scea CEO told CNBC. How this will shake out on Microsoft's end is anyone's guess but the way that Sony has positioned themself as the Indie friendly system, it might be a while before we see the byte-sized games for cheap on Xbox One.

That image above not only outs my age but has also probably sent a red flag to the powers that be to fire me for having to look up Virtual Sex on the Google. For those lacking an intense knowledge on mid-90's action flicks starring America's sweetheart, Sylvester Stallone, the movie in question is Demolition Man and there's a scene where Sly and Sandra Bullock engage in simulated relations (Nsfw for you squares, for everyone else jump to 1:46 to see awkward nekkid times) and it's as erotic and confusing as screaming chaupin monkeys trapped in a rave. What does this have to with video games? Why absolutely everything of course!
It's taken approximately one billion years for an Oculus Rift dev to merge two of teenage boys' favorite pastimes-- video games and porn In Threee Deeee!!!

E3 has always been home to some of Nintendo's biggest announcements, and last week was no different… well, okay, it was a little different. Forgoing the traditional big press conference, Nintendo opted to deliver their E3 announcements online, via a Nintendo Direct live stream. Technical issues aside, the Direct broadcast showcased a handful of games, starring some of Nintendo's biggest names to the consumer for the first time. From the first gameplay for the all new "Super Mario 3D World," to the first trailer for "Super Smash Bros." for the 3Ds and Wii U, Nintendo may not have gone as big as they usually do, but they still delivered in the way of content.

The dust has settled as E3 2013 comes to a close but the war wages on to determine the best game from the event! Round three is go!
There have been a couple of close calls. "Killzone: Shadow Fall" eeked past "Battlefield 4" by less than 1% to claim a victory and "Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain"'s Big Boss just ran out of steam in favor of Peter Molyneux's enigmatic new god game "Godus" by a few points. The third week match-ups should prove very interesting as fan loyalties are stronger than ever.
The next battles are:
Edward Kenway (Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag) Vs. Aiden Pearce (Watch_Dogs)
In what has become an unofficial Ubisoft face-off, Edward and Aiden have defeated Rayman and Sam Fisher respectively. Can elite hacker, Aiden outwit one of the world's greatest assassins?

One of Nintendo's big surprises at last week's E3 was the first playable demo of the next game in the "Mario Kart" franchise, "Mario Kart 8." The first (and likely only) entry on the Wii U has Mario and his friends defying gravity, as their karts can now travel anywhere the course takes them - even upside down. This new gameplay proves that there are still some new things left for a series that has been around for a couple decades.
Late last week, we had a chance to catch up with the man that has been working on the series since the first game, Hideki Konno, who is now serving as this game's Producer, as well as Kosuke Yabuki, "Mario Kart 8"'s Director, to ask them some questions about where the franchise has been, what it's like to work on such a cherished title, and where we can expect things to go from here.

Despite a warm response from consumers to the 3Ds, Nintendo is hesitant to implement 3D in its next console. However, the firm is not revealing at this point what the "next thing" will be in terms of its home gaming development. "I think at Nintendo, we realise that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work," Nintendo 3Ds hardware producer Hideki Konno told CNN. "In order to make 3D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3D." Nintendo of (more)...

Nintendo has explained why the 3Ds won't include the eShop at launch. System project manager Hideki Konno told Gamasutra that the firm wasn't happy with previous online shopping experiences on the Wii and DS, and will aim to make it better on its latest handheld. "We definitely want to make sure that [the eShop is] ready before we bring it out," he said. "The iterations that we've had before - for Wii and DS - to be honest, we just haven't been as satisfied as we would like. "It's browser-based, and to be honest, the ease of use wasn't what we wanted, and I don't think that anyone has been pleased with the user response. And I don't think that people have been using it as often as we want. "And you know on Wii, of course, you had the promotion channel, which is where you went to get new information, and see game demos,...

The original 3Ds did not have any 3D capabilities, according to Nintendo. Group manager Hideki Konno told Famitsu (via 1Up) that the first concept for the handheld lacked many key features, including 3D and motion control. "I became involved with development starting in 2008, but at that time, it didn't have 3D visuals," he said. "From Nintendo's perspective, they've released 3D Hot Rally and the Virtual Boy; they've had a history of experimenting with 3D visuals. "With this system, you could say the timing was just right for us. It was the right time to start thinking about using the latest in high-tech and try out glasses-free 3D. The technology we got to demo was really impressive, and starting in early 2009, we began to think that it was time to bring it to games." Konno (more)...
