He can’t quite remember. And now, with an unknown assailant pulling the trigger, Kat is forced to recall exactly what happened to each bullet. While the empty rounds click away, memories of wild animal attacks, run-ins with an impulsive police officer, a down-to-earth arms dealer, and his ex-lover come flooding back. Haunted paintings have a long history in horror cinema and literature, but this Gothic tale sees début director Simon Ross, working from a script by David Griffiths (who wrote William Friedkin’s The Hunted), take the idea in a different direction. Here the painting is both a force in itself and a metaphor for what is left behind when a person’s body remains but the mind which once inhabited it is gone.
Alex Debose (Ryan Kwanten) is such a man. A little way into the film, through which he drifts on autopilot, guided by wife Sofia (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), we learn that he has suffered an accident, leaving him with brain damage which doctors believe to be permanent. The accident occurred when the couple were arguing, adding to Sofia’s burden of guilt. Friends and strangers alike advise her that she needs to let go and allow him to be cared for in.

Despite the odd cliche, a thriller with an unnerving picture at its core is coated with unsettling energy and a standout performance from Mexican actor Natalia Córdova-Buckley
Simon Ross’s capable debut can be hung in a gallery of films featuring unnerving paintings, from The Picture of Dorian Gray to Ghostbusters 2 and In the Mouth of Madness. Wife turned carer Sofia (Natalia Córdova-Buckley) stumbles across an uncanny canvas in the attic of the mansion to which she has brought her catatonic husband Alex (Ryan Kwanten); it is supposedly a self-portrait of his great-grandfather, but she is startled to find that it is a spitting image of Alex. While this gothic chestnut, and the psychodrama that follows – with Sofia unsure how much is the product of her own under-siege mind – feel familiar, Ross injects them with a troubling inner turbulence that bodes well for him.

Regardless of genre, fans place an enormous amount of expectation on series finales. It's not easy to carry the responsibility of wrapping up any extraneous plot threads and character arcs in a satisfying way for longtime audiences. Even the most acclaimed shows, like "Seinfeld" and "The Sopranos," can have their entire successful run overshadowed by middling or divisive reception to their respective finales. This distinction carries over to horror TV shows, with plenty of notable series marring their celebrated legacies because of the last impressions left by divisive final episodes.
Horror shows often suffer from abrupt cancellations, denying audiences a satisfying amount of closure thanks to anticlimactic endings that don't live up to fan expectations. Even some of the most enduring and iconic horror shows have come to a close with lackluster finales. Here are the most maligned endings that ruined the legacies of TV horror classics by failing to stick the landing.

Having taken the world by storm with "Saw" in 2004, Australian director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell were suddenly the hottest new act in horror. Unfortunately, three years later, the duo would suffer the dreaded "sophomore slump" with "Dead Silence," an original puppet horror film that was lambasted by critics and bombed at the box office, barely matching its $20 million budget. It's a shame, honestly. I won't deny that "Dead Silence" has its problems (which we will get into), but it's also an enthrallingly gothic tale of mystery and the macabre (one bursting with creative ideas and inventively ghastly visuals). Not to mention it functions as a useful primer for the rest of Wan and Whannell's horror oeuvre.

The dark comedic-thriller follows an art dealer (Thurman) who teams with a hitman (Manganiello) and his boss (Jackson) for a money laundering scheme. March is sort of a weird, in-between period in the moviegoing calendar. With Oscars season thankfully behind us but the summer blockbuster season not quite in gear just yet, we're left with an odd mix of theatrical offerings: a handful of immensely successful franchise sequels, some notable bombs, and possibly some reason to hope. But don't let that fool you into thinking that there wasn't much else worth your time throughout the last few weeks. It just takes a little bit of digging to fully appreciate the hidden gems.

As you may recall, it was announced back in 2020 that HBO was developing a series reboot of their hit vampire series “True Blood,” with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa leading the charge. Based on the novels by Charlaine Harris and created by Alan Ball, HBO’s vampire/werewolf/were-panther/you-name-it series aired between 2008 and 2014, officially coming to an end after seven seasons and 80 episodes.
But what’s the latest on HBO’s “True Blood” reboot? Well, according to a new article from Variety this week, those plans from back in 2020 are dead-in-the-water here in 2023.
HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys tells Variety that while a few scripts had been written for a potential “True Blood” reboot, nothing ended up coming together. It seems the project was only ever in the early stages, and HBO wasn’t confident enough to proceed. That doesn’t mean “True Blood” will Never be back, but...

True Blood is not returning on HBO.
Despite a new series set in the Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer series universe, the premium cabler has put a stake in those plans.
Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed as much in a new interview with Variety.
Bloys said that despite a few scripts, "nothing felt like it got there," and the series is no longer in the works.
Returning to the universe would be a tough sell because the 2014 series finale didn't exactly go out on the best of terms.
It was a near-unanimously terrible final episode that disregarded the components of the series that made it successful for seven seasons.
Based on Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, the original series focused on telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire.

After decades of Octavia E. Butler's work being under-adapted, FX debuted the first TV adaptation of "Kindred," based on the author's esteemed 1979 novel, on Dec. 13, 2022. However, the series will not be moving forward with another season.
On Jan. 30, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively announced that FX has canceled "Kindred" after just one season. According to the outlet, showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins plans to shop the FX drama around to other networks, as he previously expressed to Popsugar a vision of having multiple seasons.
Jacobs-Jenkins's historical science fiction series, now streaming on Hulu, follows the story of Dana (Mallori Johnson), a young aspiring writer who moves to Los Angeles and suddenly finds herself mysteriously traveling back in time to a 19th-century plantation in antebellum Maryland where her late mother somehow exists.

FX is not proceeding with a second season of Kindred, its drama series based on Octavia E. Butler’s novel, which ran exclusively on Hulu. The news comes a month and a half after the eight-episode first season was released as a binge drop Dec. 13. Launching to largely positive reviews, Kindred has not been able to create buzz the way fellow new 2022 FX scripted series The Bear has done.
It is very rare for FX to cancel a series after one season; the network is known for carefully curating its slate and taking time to develop projects, sometimes redoing a pilot, and most of its shows stick around for awhile.
From showrunner and executive producer Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Kindred centers on “Dana James” (Mallori Johnson), a young Black woman and aspiring writer who has uprooted her life of familial obligation and relocated to Los Angeles, ready to claim a future that,...

Time-travel stories are, inevitably, almost always about the present. They’re sort of a crucible for our values and ideas about the world, when transposed suddenly to the distant past or future. But FX’s “Kindred,” based on the 1979 Octavia Butler novel, owes its identity as much to the problems and possibilities of TV in the 21st century as it does to one of the landmark speculative fiction stories of the 20th century. Showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins saw something happening as he watched shows like “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” inaugurate the age of the antihero in the late ’00s. He saw an emphasis shift in the structure and storytelling priorities of certain TV shows, one that might perfectly fit the way Butler’s novel plays with the movement of time and how it affects the characters.

Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to my faves of ‘22. It’s become redundant to say “it was another great year” but goddammit I can’t lie: 2022 was loaded with quality horror, up and down the line, across all media.
This means as with every recent year, I have missed several releases – a few of the big ones, and several smaller yet intriguing entries. My frequent bouts of absenteeism this time around weren’t because of any bouts of laziness or writer’s malaise, but rather due to working on my first book, A Cut Below: A Celebration Of B Horror Movies, 1950s - 1980s, coming this year from McFarland Publishing! Twelve film festivals each housing essays on five films with a common theme. I can hardly wait to share it with the world. End of plug!
First off, I should state that I’m only going to discuss films...

Science fiction is one of the most versatile genres not only in film but in the arts in general. It is a genre intrinsically tied with the social, political, and economic strife of any particular time — oftentimes, the cyclical nature of humanity will mean that a sci-fi movie relevant in the 1950s will become relevant in the 2020s. Without science fiction, who knows what the landscape of film and television would be like today?
All of this is to say that 2022 was arguably terrible, although the sci-fi films released this year were pretty damn good. While some movies had their hype campaigns accentuated with festival runs, others seemed to come out of nowhere to delight genre fans and casual viewers alike. From micro-budget films to big Hollywood blockbusters, the genre was rife with sci-fi movies that not only helped diversify the genre but also made us think about it in totally new ways.

Kindred is finally here — all eight episodes are now streaming on Hulu — and it marks the first on-screen adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s celebrated sci-fi novel.
The series began in medias res, with Dana (played by WeCrashed’s Mallori Johnson) returning from her latest jump through time and immediately soaking in a bath to soothe her sore, severely whipped back. That’s a big deviation from the book, in which we first met Dana at the hospital recovering from her final jump — which left a permanent mark — and with police questioning whether she was being abused by her husband Kevin.

FX’s “Kindred,” streaming on Hulu, is the long-awaited adaptation of what is arguably sci-fi trailblazer Octavia E. Butler’s most well-known novel. Released in 1979, “Kindred” is a literary mash-up that is part slave narrative, fantasy and historical fiction. What many regard as Butler’s magnum opus transports a modern Black woman back in time to a plantation where she experiences life as an enslaved woman. To bring this work to life, which has been in the Hollywood pipeline since at least the 1990s, FX tasked Obie Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, noted for his plays “Appropriate” and “An Octoroon” as well as Pulitzer Prize finalists “Gloria” and “Everybody.” Jacobs-Jenkins also served as a producer on HBO’s critically acclaimed, multiple Emmy Award-winning limited series “Watchmen,” which propelled the horrific Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 into popular conversations.
Which is all to say, this adaptation of “Kindred” has some serious bona fides bringing it to life.

FX's "Kindred" is the literary TV event of the year and the cast and crew are honored to bring such an iconic story to the small screen. The series adaptation based on Octavia E. Butler's celebrated 1979 novel of the same name, which arrived on Hulu on Dec. 13, is billed as a "genre-bending exploration" of slavery, racism, sexism, and family history at the crux of a young Black woman's unexpected time travel expedition set in 2016.
"Every decision we made, we tried to make in the grain of the book or some version of the book we were given access to."
Centered on Dana (played by Mallori Johnson), "Kindred" follows the aspiring writer-turned-Los Angeles transplant and her budding interracial romance with new friend Kevin (Micah Stock) as she's violently pulled back in time to a 19th-century plantation that she finds she has secret family ties to. In the new FX drama Kindred, a young Black woman named Dana finds herself time-traveling back and forth between Los Angeles in 2016 to a slave plantation in early 19th century Maryland. On some of these trips, Dana (Mallori Johnson) takes along Kevin (Micah Stock), a white man she has only just started dating, out of an understandable fear of being in that time and place on her own. For the most part, both are horrified to be there. But there is a peaceful moment during one of their longer visits...
