Exclusive: Pixel United, a gaming firm led by former Discovery, Miramax and Fox exec Mike Lang, is developing a second season of Raid: Call of the Arbiter, an animated series based on a well-established mobile game.
Mobile game Raid: Shadow Legends from Plarium, a Pixel United studio, spawned an animated series last spring. The series debuted on YouTube in May and recently wrapped its first season with 20 million views. Episodes were released weekly, helping stimulate viewer demand and also drive more interest in the game.
As it preps the second season, Pixel United plans to consider extensions like a longer-form digital series or possibly a film adaptation.
“Our enthusiastic, loyal Raid players inspired our team to create this series in the first place, and the overwhelmingly positive response on YouTube has shown us we must create even more content outside of the game,” Lang said in a statement. “We understand...

When Mike Lang was CEO of Miramax Films, he came to Cannes last year with big plans to move into production, and tap the library for remakes. It was an ambitious plan. Now, Lang surprisingly resigned and it’s not exactly clear what Miramax is going to be. We do know its core business is earning cash from managing the library built up by Bob and Harvey Weinstein that came in the Disney sale for over half a billion dollars. Now, Miramax has taken on the library of films that include Guys and Dolls, Wuthering Heights, The Best Years Of Our Lives and The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. Here’s the announcement: Santa Monica, CA, April 2, 2012 – Miramax and the Samuel Goldwyn Jr. Family Trust today announced that Miramax’s Global Sales team will manage global licensing of the library produced by the legendary Samuel \ Goldwyn. Terms of the agreement are not being disclosed.

Los Angeles -- Miramax CEO Mike Lang is stepping down, signaling that the award-winning studio founded by Bob and Harvey Weinstein is heading in a new direction.
The studio behind movies such as "Pulp Fiction" and "The English Patient" was purchased from The Walt Disney Co. by a group of investors for $663 million in December 2010.
Since then, Lang has aggressively sold rights to the Miramax library of films to digital outlets such as Netflix Inc., Hulu and NetMovies in Brazil. He has increased the staff roster from a handful to about 70 employees, and cut a deal with The Weinstein Co. to jointly develop sequels to movies in which both companies have an interest, such as "Bad Santa" and "Rounders."
But investors including Colony Capital, Ron Tutor and the investment arm of Qatar had already withdrawn the majority of their equity in a refinancing last year that added more than $500 million in debt.

When streaming content gets better and more abundant every single day, it's pretty obvious we're living in the streaming renaissance. What might have began with YouTube and Netflix is continually expanding, minute by minute, leading one Hollywood CEO to say that online distribution monopolies are a greater threat to the movie industry than piracy. In other news, XBox Live will soon get a large quantity of streaming channels this holiday season and Hulu has just signed a deal to broadcast content from Univision, the popular Spanish language station. There's more on all of these stories after the jump. Miramax CEO Mike Lang recently did a public interview with Netflix Cco Ted Sarandos and said that he doesn't believe piracy is as big a threat to Hollywood as online distribution monopolies, much like Apple's iTunes is for music. Apple is the strongest company in the music industry because there was not enough competition,...

No, not an iPhone 5 story, but then nor was anyone's.

“It’s really important as an industry that we try to allow multiple players in markets around the world,” he is quoted as saying by Rapid TV News.
According to Lang, Miramax is planning to exploit a variety of ways to get content to consumers.
“We believe that cross-platform is key to growing the digital transactions business,” Lang said in his Media Mastermind keynote address at the trade event in Cannes. “We believe that all [the] different platforms can be complementary and co-exist together.”

Thousands of TV executives from around the world are en route to Cannes for the annual Mipcom market, which starts on Monday. The great majority of them, who are flying into the nearby Nice airport, were greeted by a group of Pan Am stewardesses — a promotion for the new ABC/Sony TV series, which will be among the offerings at the confab. (Though most of the sales for the 1960s soap were made after the international screenings in May.) Probably because there is no airport in Cannes, Pan Am stewardesses were stationed at both terminals of the Nice airport, greeting travelers on their way to the annual confab, according to an attendee who snapped a picture. Among the highlights at this year’s Mipcom: keynote speeches by Disney-abc’s Anne Sweeney, Fox’s Kevin Reilly, Miramax’s Mike Lang and Viacom International’s Robert Bakish as well as a press...

Miramax Films chief Mike Lang came into Cannes determined to dispel the notion that his backers handed $660 million over to Disney simply to manage a film library. Lang met me at the Majestic Friday alongside Rob Lowe, the strategic advisor and an investor in the Miramax deal, one of several he and Colony Capital’s Tom Barrack are planning. Lowe has taken an active hand in poring over a trove of screenplays left behind by Harvey and Bob Weinstein when they exited Disney to form The Weinstein Company. Lowe and Lang feel that the best of those scripts—50-75 of 650 are make-able. Fresh productions, coupled with a plan to soon hire an executive to spearhead film acquisitions and development, positions Miramax to make a content play that Lang and Lowe said will replenish the library and keep it viable. Describing the process of poring over projects that Disney didn’t...

After the company’s restructuring and a big box office win with “The King’s Speech,” The Weinstein Company has been notably aggressive in the early days of the film festival, making pre-emptive purchases of movies based on mere footage.

Source: FilmShaft - New Poster For Guillermo Del Toro Produced “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark”
With Julia's Eyes just around the corner another Guillermo Del Toro produced movie is being released this summer. Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes and unlike Julia's Eyes, it'll be in English.
A new poster appeared in the NY Times this past weekend and Fangoria, seeing that nobody was sharing it online, scanned it and put it out for all to see. Well done!
The movie is a remake of a 1970s telly movie about demons in a new home. Sounds cool! Troy Nixey has directed. FilmDistrict are distributing the movie in America. Earlier in the year we reported on this development. Here's a re-cap:
Mike Lang, CEO of Miramax, said of the deal:
"We're very pleased to partner with FilmDistrict to bring Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark to U.

While Lionsgate was pulled in recently to help get a number of Miramax titles back onto DVD and Blu-Ray, the new Miramax owners have also enlisted Echo Bridge Entertainment to handle some of the other films in the library. The Hollywood Reporter says Lionsgate is tackling some of the more popular titles, while Echo Bridge will take "select" titles like the Halloween , Hellraiser and Children of the Corn sequels. I'm sure some of Dimensions other direct-to-dvd fare will be included. Pretty certain, as well, that the Scream trilogy will fall under the Lionsgate deal. Mike Lang, Miramax's CEO, said he wanted that series out on Blu-Ray by the time Scream 4 hits theaters.
