The 2009 "Futurama" movie "Into the Wild Green Yonder" -- the show's fourth and final -- was, one might recall, supposed to the be definite end of the series. "Futurama" was notoriously canceled in 2004 thanks to flagging ratings, but gained new life through DVD sales. The series was initially resurrected in the form of four straight-to-video movies released in 2008 and 2009, a quartet that was intended to signal the franchise's farewell. Of course, when those four films also sold well, Comedy Central stepped in and resurrected the series for a second time. As of this writing, the show has been canceled and resurrected a third time. New episodes are currently on Hulu.
Of course, the makers of "Futurama" didn't know in 2009 that they would come back, leading them to give the finale of "Green Yonder" an appropriately epic feel. The story of "Green Yonder" deals with cosmic energies, extinction, and the mass...

The premise of David X. Cohen and Matt Groening's "Futurama" is pretty simple. On New Year's Eve in the year 1999, a feckless and directionless pizza delivery boy named Fry (Billy West) accidentally falls into a cryogenic freezing tube and remains suspended for a thousand years. He awakens just as the world rings in the year 3000, and eventually takes a job working for a distant nephew named Professor Farnsworth (West), who owns a space-bound delivery company of his own. He also develops a crush on an impatient cyclops named Leela (Katey Sagal). The world of the year 3000 is replete with sci-fi trappings familiar to any fan of the genre; there are robots, aliens, space travel, and ineffable technologies.
The central joke of "Futurama" is that, despite all of humanity's advancements, human beings are still dumb and petty and concerned with their selfish creature comforts and base impulses. Fry may have been whisked into the future,...

In the case of most animated movies and TV shows, the voice actors are recorded separately and at different times. An actor can come to the studio based on their own schedule, record their own lines without any of their co-stars in the building, and "bank" an episode before the animation begins. Typically, behind-the-scenes footage of voice actors plying their craft tends to feature them alone in a soundproof booth.
There are, of course, plenty of exceptions to the rule. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill famously acted out their scenes together for "Batman: The Animated Series," and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" saw the four titular turtle teens all recording together. One can see the advantages and disadvantages of both individual and group recordings right away. The former can make for a streamlined animation process that can bend to the schedule of an actor, while the latter can produce...

When Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's animated sci-fi comedy "Futurama" began to be developed in the late 1990s, it was not treated with the respect one might expect for a follow-up to "The Simpsons." Where Groening's previous cartoon dealt in the classic sitcom setup of a dysfunctional family, "Futurama" was a harder sell, set in the year 3000 but in a world that largely looked like the late '90s. Only with aliens and spaceships.
Fox, the channel on which the show premiered, should have been a good home. After all, "The Simpsons" was an incredible success, at that point entering its 10th year on the network. Mike Judge and Greg Daniels had produced the excellent "King of the Hill" for Fox, giving the channel another animated sitcom hit. Seth McFarlane's "Family Guy" was in development around the same time. All of these shows would become part of Fox's...

Salman confirmed at an event saying he had heard a one-liner story of the film, but Sanjay hasn’t picked up his calls since then, and he jokingly asked the media to ask the director to speak with him. The fourth of four "Futurama" movies, "Into the Wild Green Yonder," came out on DVD in 2009, and it was assumed to be the final word on the series. "Futurama" would eventually return in the ensuing years, but for the moment, it looked like "Green Yonder" was the final appearance of the beloved sci-fi series. As such, the story was appropriately sprawling, involving an evil, unknowable, galaxy-wide force of evil in the universe -- the Dark Ones -- and their attempt to snuff out a mysterious new planet that just appeared out in space. The planet will later be revealed to be the egg of an Encyclopod, an outsize space-faring creature that catalogs and stores the DNA of all species in the galaxy.
At the end of "Yonder," Leo Wong (Billy West) aims to obliterate the violet dwarf star that hosts the Ecyclopod planet, as he wishes to build a galaxy-wide golf course.

Remember the first year of Russell T Davies reboot of Doctor Who? That season eased viewers back into the world of the Doctor, re-establishing a few classic villains such as the Daleks and the Autons, but also using the Time War as an excuse for avoiding references to the past.
Contrast that to the past few years, in which the show has no concerns with going back to previous adventures. Modern Doctors have met previous incarnations — sometimes in older form (as in the returns of Peter Davison and Tom Baker), sometimes recast (as in the case of David Bradley stepping in for William Hartnell), and sometimes in digital form (basically every other case). Classic villains have returned, not just the Master, the Daleks, or Cybermen, but even odd-balls like the Toymaker, whose one previous appearance can’t be watched in any form anymore. Doctor Who season 15 comes to Blu-ray, with Horror Of Fang Rock leading the six-story collection. More here.
Never mind the fact that the entirety of Doctor Who – well, save for an episode or two – is available to watch on the BBC’s iPlayer service. There’s also the not-so-small matter of Doctor Who physical media releases, which continue thanks to the genuinely brilliant line of Blu-ray sets.
Next in line? Some Tom Baker magic, thanks to series 15 of Doctor Who becoming the subject of the latest set. This one runs to seven discs, dating all the way back to 1977, and includes the following stories…
Horror Of Fang Rock
The Invisible Enemy
Image Of The Fendahl
The Sun Makers

Time is a tricky adversary in "Futurama." It's been 24 years since the show first debuted in 1999, but in the latest season, available on Hulu, the characters clearly haven't aged 24 years. But, unlike on "The Simpsons," the characters have aged at least a little bit. Bart Simpson has been 10 years old for 35 years. Fry and Leela (Billy West and Katey Sagal) seem to have grown together as a couple and both have matured ever so slightly, implying the passage of real time. In 24 years, they have aged maybe seven. Hilariously, the Professor (West) seems to have continued aging apace, remaining the doddering old fool he always was. The alcoholic robot Bender (John Dimaggio) hasn't really grown up, but he has changed over the years, remaining criminal but growing a sense of self-pity. Amy (Lauren Tom) has graduated from college, gotten married, and has three newt-like children with her invertebrate husband Kif (Maurice Lamarche).

"Futurama" may be set in the 31st century, but a lot of its humor relies on the pop culture of the 20th and 21st. As early as episode 10, "A Flight to Remember" (the season 2 premiere going by broadcast order), "Futurama" was parodying contemporary movies: in this case, "Titanic," then the highest-grossing film of all time. The episode's title comes from another movie about the 1912 ship sinking, "A Night to Remember."
The Planet Express crew takes a vacation on the Titanic; this one is a spaceship rather than an ocean cruiser. On board, Bender romances the Countess de la Roca, a robot who looks suspiciously like Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet). Amy's parents are also on the cruise, while Zapp Brannigan is the ship's captain. Deepika Padukone & Hrithik Roshan Came Too Close To Be Paired Together Thrice Before Fighter! ( Photo Credit – Viacom18 Studios / YouTube )
Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan have been making people go Omfg with their chemistry in Fighter, and this raised the only obvious question no one had asked before: Why didn’t someone cast them together? Well, it took Bollywood 16 years and a Siddharth Anand to do that job? Like really?
Well, no, that is not the entire truth. After Deepika Padukone made her grand debut with Om Shanti Om in 2007, it took her quite some time to reach the top, and then, one day, she turned a Bhansali muse, and the world saw her in a different light.
As soon as Dp presented her Leela avatar from Ram-Leela looking like a goddess, Bollywood filmmakers were too keen to cast her with the Greek God. The first one to hatch this pair was,...

In the "Futurama" episode "The Prisoner of Benda," Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) invents a body-swapping device that trades the consciousnesses of two users. He, being a very, very old man, would like to occupy the youthful, more active body of his employee, Amy Wong (Lauren Tom). Amy, meanwhile, longs to overeat as she once did as a child, and the Professor's bony body would allow her to indulge in her appetite. They swap bodies, but only after doing so realize that the machine doesn't allow them to swap back. A third body would allow Amy to return to her body, but then the Professor and the third party would be swapped. It was all very complicated.
Eventually, Fry (West) and Leela (Katey Sagal) are having romantic dates in the bodies of Dr. Zoidberg (West) and the Professor, and the Professor is performing in an Eastern European circus in Bender's body.

Once per season, the makers of "Futurama" like to tinker with their formula by presenting speculative anthology-style episodes wherein they can tell stories that are even wilder than usual. The second edition of this format was entitled "Anthology of Interest II" and aired on January 6, 2002. The wraparound device for "Interest II" was that the Professor (Billy West) invented a TV-like device called the What-If Machine which could present short videos of whatever speculative question one thought to ask it.
Fry (West), being something of a shiftless layabout, announces that he's only ever been proficient at old-school video games, and asks the What-If Machine what life would be like were it to adhere to the rules of said video games. Spoilers for "Futurama" follow.
"Futurama" ended its latest season with "All The Way Down," an episode centered around the trippy science-fiction that makes the show more than just a standard sitcom. Professor Farnsworth's (Billy West) new machine, the Simputron, creates a digital simulation of the entire universe; the Planet Express crew chooses to follow the lives of their digital selves. The latest episode of "Futurama," the season 11 finale entitled "All The Way Down," covers a lot of territory. Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) devises a new machine called the Simputron, which is able to render a full-scale simulation of the known world. Only, because he hasn't tapped a reliable power source for the process, the simulated universe is at first rendered in 8-bit.
The main action of the episode spirals into Nolanesque territory, pondering the dread-filled existential quandary of whether by now it's pretty much certain we're living in a simulation and, if so, whether that even matters. The Planet Express crew decide to send Bender (John Dimaggio) down into the body of simulation Bender, "Inception" style, and reason with them not to blow up a magnetar and thus glitch out the coding of their "universe," thereby revealing the man behind the curtain, so to speak. Spoilers for "Futurama" season 11, episode 10 follow.
When it comes to any sort of episodic or anthology-based science fiction series, there will almost always come a point where the characters start to wonder: Is their world even real? Although "The Matrix" is still probably the most famous story about a guy realizing he lives in a simulation, the concept had been driving philosophers crazy long before modern computers even existed.
In Plato's "Allegory of the Cave," written about 2400 years ago, the Greek philosopher described the life of a hypothetical group of people trapped inside a cave since birth, unaware that what they perceive as reality is just a series of elaborate shadows on the cave walls. In 1641, René Descartes wrote about how his senses weren't a reliable indicator that everything around him was truly real, that he couldn't prove with certainty that his whole world was not just an illusion...

Of all the rude, crass, self-absorbed, ridiculous, inappropriate criminals on "Futurama" -- that is to say, most of the characters on the show -- none is more worthy of censure than Captain Zapp Brannigan (Billy West). Zapp works for Doop, an organization similar to the Federation from "Star Trek," but far more trigger-happy and willing to engage in resource theft. Zapp commands a massive warship called the Nimbus, although the craft is not half as big as Zapp's ego. Zapp is narcissistic, over-sexualized, vain, crude, uncaring, obsessed with velour, and endlessly abusive to his first officer Kif (Maurice Lamarche) whom he uses as a towel in the show's latest episode. West once said in an interview with Vanity Fair that Zapp Brannigan was what might have happened if William Shatner, the actor, was in charge of the starship Enterprise instead of Captain Kirk.

In a 2020 video interview with Vanity Fair, voice actor Billy West explained some of his creative decisions surrounding his multiple "Futurama" characters. For the blowhard Captain Zapp Brannigan, West imagined William Shatner, as if he -- the actor, not Captain Kirk -- were in charge of the Starship Enterprise. Zapp is a creature of pure ego and vanity, which is how West sees Shatner.
On "Futurama," however, Zapp Brannigan is more in line with a widespread popular interpretation of Captain Kirk. Kirk is often called a ladies' man and an incautious cowboy. Zapp wasn't a ladies' man, but he was a pathetic lothario who too often sexually propositioned Leela (Katey Sagal). He referred to his bedroom as "the love-nasium," and was obsessed with wearing velour clothing. Zapp also wasn't merely incautious, but blitheringly incompetent as the commander of the Doop starship Nimbus. "It's an emergency, sir!" an underling would yell.

He referred to his bedroom as "the love-nasium," and was obsessed with wearing velour clothing. Zapp also wasn't merely incautious, but blitheringly incompetent as the commander of the Doop starship Nimbus. "It's an emergency, sir!" an underling would yell.

This new "Futurama" season has been anything but shy about satirizing hot topics in 2020s culture. The latest one? "Cancelation," or powerful people being ostracized/held accountable for misuses of authority. The episode's title is the blunt: "Zapp Gets Canceled."
Zapp Brannigan (Billy West) is a starship captain in the Democratic Order of Planets (Doop). Befitting the "Star Trek" parody, the pitch for his character is, "What if William Shatner was captain of the USS Enterprise?" On top of being a glory hog, Zapp is lecherous, misogynistic, bloodthirsty, incompetent, pretentious, and abusive to his subordinates (West has noticed similarities between Zapp and a certain other blond narcissist).
If any character on "Futurama" was going to be canceled, then no one is more deserving of it than Zapp. In this episode, his mistreated second-in-command Kif Kroker (Maurice Lamarche) grows a backbone and gets Zapp court-martialed. Thus, he loses his captaincy while attending sensitivity training.

The character of Roberto, the homicidal robot, first appeared on the "Futurama" episode "Mother's Day", although he would become more of a star in the following season's "Insane in the Mainframe". Roberto, played by the amazing Dave Herman, was a vicious criminal often frustrated that he was programmed to be as violent as he was. He had a penchant for stabbing, and rarely spent much time outside of robot prisons and/or mental asylums. Roberto once forced Bender (John Dimaggio) and Fry (Billy West) to help him with a bank robbery, broke into Planet Express to take the main characters hostage, and escaped from an asylum by wearing the robotic skin of his doctor. "Don't call me crazy!" he would yell, "I'm just not user-friendly!" His parole officer once ordered Roberto to get an upgrade, otherwise, he wouldn't get back his stabbin' knife.
Roberto eventually even had a catchphrase of sorts.

When Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's "Futurama" debuted in 1999, it aired on Fox and fit neatly into the traditional network TV 30-minute time slot. Most half-hour TV shows were typically only about 22 minutes of actual programming, allowing for two extended commercial breaks roughly at the 10-minute mark and the 20-minute mark. Because they were beholden to that stringent schedule, most network TV shows worked their writing down to a science, writing stories that could only be told in a very specific way. To some readers, the structure may sound creatively limiting, but one might also recall that old saying about creation vis-à-vis necessity. For generations, TV writing expertly crafted stories that could fit into 30- or 60-minute time slots with ease, carefully writing in climactic moments or comedic punchlines right at the commercial breaks.
This structure certainly aided "Futurama," which was forced to be jaunty and light...

"Futurama" is an animated comedy, yes, but it's also a show that takes its science very seriously. As nonsensical and absurd as some storylines can be, the writers' room on the series also boasted actual scientists to make sure things made theoretical sense. They were so good, "Futurama" often predicted the future. During the "Futurama Live!" post-show with Nerdist following the series' original finale, the creative team was asked if the science ever got in the way of a storyline. As it turns out, it did.
"I was working on a story with one of our writers, Josh Weinstein [...] We were working on this very complicated story where this character showed up who was living backward in time and talking backward and moving backward, and we worked on it for like three days and it was the coolest science fiction story, but there was nothing funny about it whatsoever," said showrunner David X. Cohen.

If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries or early millennium classic cartoons then boy does Hulu’s list of new releases have some great news for you!
Hulu continues its implicit understanding that streaming services are basically true crime distribution machines this month with a trio of intriguing titles. ReviewAfter ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ and ‘Karnan’, director Mari Selvaraj is back with yet another film that will redefine how Kollywood talks about caste. FilmPoster/CourtesyMariSelvarajTwitterThe heart and soul of Maamannan is Vadivelu. After all, the title takes the name of his character. "The Simpsons" was not the first TV sitcom to parody pop culture, but it may have been the most ambitious one when it originally premiered. Some of its best episodes remake classic films with "Simpsons" characters. "Rosebud" recasts "Citizen Kane" with local wealthy despot Mr. Burns. "Bart of Darkness" puts child hellraiser Bart Simpson into Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window." Then there's the fan-favorite "Treehouse of Horror" episodes, which riff on classic horror films and television. A generation of young fans were given the "Simpsons" version of the canon before they even knew the source material existed. But that was not such a bad thing. At its best, "The Simpsons" is judicious in its pick of source material, and exacting in its detail. Characters in the show rarely just say, "This reminds me of a popular movie!" There's always a recreated "camera angle," a guest star or a deep cut...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Resident Season 6 finale, “All Hands on Deck.”] If this is how The Resident goes out, it does so on a happy note. Among the highlights: Conrad (Matt Czuchry) and Billie (Jessica Lucas) say, “I love you.” The doctors save Bell’s (Bruce Greenwood) granddaughter Sammie and Governor Betz (Steven Culp) — and, therefore, the hospital (thanks to their deal). Bell is entering Devon’s (Manish Dayal) Ms trial. Devon proposes to Leela (Anuja Joshi), who becomes an attending. Showrunner Andrew Chapman explains why that felt like a series finale and shares what we could see if Season 7 is picked up. What can you say about a Season 7? Andrew Chapman: Fingers crossed. We just don’t know. I don’t think that Fox knows. I don’t think anybody really knows. They hold out the possibility, but they won’t pick us up yet. We probably won’t know until April or May.

Between high-stakes cases and moral and ethical conflicts among the characters, the hour felt more like old-school The Resident than it has in some time.
We got the return of Conrad, the Bad Boy of Chastain, with an assist and push from Aj on The Resident Season 6 Episode 12. And our beloved characters nearly all found themselves weighing what the greater good is and entails.
The storylines and all the characters were balanced well too.
This would have served well as the first part of a two-hour finale, but the split may not have been so bad.
Unlike The Resident Season 6 Episode 11, where there wasn't much momentum built, and it was hard to say where the finale could've possibly gone or what it would've explored, this installment is enough to hook you for an exciting finale.
And while we still don't know how the season's final installment will play out, there...

Even the longest-running series can benefit from a new spark.
That rejuvenation is what has been happening in the last couple of seasons on NCIS: Los Angeles, thanks in part to the clever Reserve Agent Shyla Dahr, played by Kavi Ramachandran Ladnier (pronounced Kuvi Rama-chun-thrun Lad-ner).
In an exclusive interview with TV Fanatic, Ladnier talked about how she's enjoying her recurring role in a call from Los Angeles.
Ladnier landed the role when she auditioned for a different role in which the character spoke the same type of technical dialogue as Shyla. She missed out on that role but was offered the part of Shyla instead.
"Which I love," she said. "I love playing Shyla."
Ladnier joined a veteran cast, many of whom had been together for more than a decade. She said they made the transition seamless for her.
"They're so kind and generous .. the cast, the crew, everyone involved in the show,...
