Meredith is a struggling mother abandoned by her family and partner after the appalling death of their newborn son. Alone in her house after separating, she becomes more and more isolated, unaware that the death of her baby has caused the birth of something far more sinister. An entity conceived from tragedy that is determined to make her relive over and over again the darkest moments of her existence and keep her family forever torn apart.
Mom is another heavy-handed look at post-partum depression wrapped up in the skin of a genre film – in this case a haunted house film. It’s something we’ve seen plenty of times before, and the filmmakers here don’t really try and stray away from cliche.

The very welcome return of an old character is the one highlight in the abyss of storytelling that Helix has fallen into.
This review contains spoilers.
2.9 Ectogenesis
For those who are curious, the term Ectogenesis refers to the growing of something in an artificial environment, like when plants are grown without soil. Except used in Helix, it had more to do with Sarah’s immortal baby, who is chilling in the plastic tube that it was placed in after it was induced. There are so many things wrong with this idea, it is hard to know where to start, but as it is frozen in its development cycle, that wouldn’t technically be Ectogenesis, would it? Actually, if that were true then it wouldn’t fill the tube either, as when Sarah became immortal it wasn’t anywhere near term, as the foetus represented here most certainly is.
Details, details,...

A team of scientists in the Arctic find themselves face-to-face with an adversary that, if unleashed on the world, could destroy life as we know it. The scientists on Syfy's Helix have a tough battle ahead -- not unlike a new TV show's fight for survival. Will this series be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled due to low ratings instead? Stay tuned.
A thriller series, Helix follows a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to the Arctic and find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle. The cast includes Billy Campbell, Catherine Lemieux, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jordan Hayes, Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanimé, Meegwun Fairbrother, and Neil Napier.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
3/28 update: The show has been renewed for a second season.

As you may know, we here at SciFi Mafia are major, elemental, over-the-top, gushing fans of the smart, creepy, completely addictive Helix. After last week’s addition of Jeri Ryan as the teeth-filing Constance Sutton, we all have even more questions.
Ms. Ryan and showrunner Steven Maeda spoke with media outlets last week about the character and the show, and to start, I asked her what drew her to the role:
Jeri Ryan: You know, it was fun – well the concept of the show to begin with was sort of intriguing to me. I hadn’t seen any of it at that point because it was just being shot. I loved the people that were involved in it. So that was all really cool. And then when I sort of was hearing a little bit more about the character and I was seeing how she was written, then it was fun…...

Syfy hosted a Q&A with "Helix" guest star Jeri Ryan and exec producer/showrunner Steve Maeda last week, and they revealed quite a bit about what's ahead now that Constance Sutton (Ryan) has arrived in the Arctic.
Things kick off with some discussion about Sutton, who she really is and her motives, and then we hear about topics ranging from the likelihood of a second season, Jeri's love of gore, how long they can keep up the series' intensity, Hatake’s obsession with Walker, the current state of genre TV, and much, much more.
If you're a fan of the show and/or Ryan (whose appearance as Ilaria's corporate "face" first occurred this past Friday night in Episode 1.07, "Survivor Zero," and will continue in future eps), you'll want to grab your morning coffee or tea and settle in for a bit.

Shockers abound in this clip from tonight’s new episode of Helix – and it’s only the opening four minutes. The only reason to avoid watching it now is that it will make you yell at your computer screen in frustration that you can’t see more, instantly. Sorry. It’s what I did.
The accompanying TV spot is equally “What?!”-worthy, so check that out as well. If you, sadly, still haven’t started watching this show, then get on over to syfy.com/now/helix or to Syfy On Demand on your TV to watch the 5 that have already aired. Seriously, just don’t put it off, or you’re likely to get spoiled on the constantly churning events of this massively addictive show.

If you are one of the few cool people who have not been watching Helix, or if you are amongst the millions who have watched it and know you need to rewatch to pick up the clues you missed the first or fourth time around, here is great news: Syfy will be airing every episode (that’s five so far) tomorrow (Thursday) night starting at 6/5c.
Seriously, if you have only seen each episode once, make sure to watch this marathon; you’ll be surprised at how much you missed the first time around. Plus, as with all serialized shows, you’ll notice things in earlier episodes that you know have been expanded in later episodes. Just trust me on this and rewatch.

The plot thickens in next week's Episode 1.06 of Syfy's record-shattering new series "Helix." Here's a sneak peek of the opening moments of "Aniqatiga" along with a few photos to prepare you for the intense thrills to come.
The area in which the show is breaking records is "Live +7," which adds 7 days of DVR viewing to its ratings. "Helix" leaped 82% among Adults 18-49 (1.34 million), 74% in Adults 25-54 (1.55 million), and 64% in total viewers (3.0 million) for the January 10th premiere.
Those are the largest increases ever for a Syfy scripted series in L+7 viewing compared to Syfy’s scripted original series premieres since L+7 ratings started being recorded by Nielsen. "Helix" also rose 102% in Adults 18-34 (454K), while posting strong gains among women viewers, up 85% in Women 18-49 (541K), 73% in Women 25-54 (649K), and 232% in Women 18-34 (166K). Everyone is on high alert on Friday’s episode of Syfy’s “Helix.” In the wake of the shocking murder of Dr. Doreen Boyle (Catherine Lemieux), suspicion is at an all time high on the Cdc team. Also read: Syfy Orders ‘Dominion’ to Series Friday’s episode, titled “The White Room,” will offer fans some answers and big revelations that include an unexpected kiss, new alliances, and a broken trust. Congratulations to everyone involved in the production of my current favorite show Helix; the “plus 7″ (DVR-watching) ratings for the show have reportedly shattered all previous viewing records for Syfy. That means congratulations are also in order for all those smart viewers, who have likely learned that this show is definitely one to watch at least twice every week.
In case you missed it, click here to read (or re-read) what series creator Cameron Porsandeh told SciFi Mafia about the series structure, and the fact that it was created with rewatches in mind, for those who are so inclined.
I have to say, it makes me a little sad to see other good shows subjected to the kind of analysis and scrutiny that Helix encourages. Sorry, clue-seeking American Horror Story: Coven fans, but that brooch was just a brooch. If you want to analyze a show, watch (and rewatch) Helix, and...

Director: Steven A. Adelson. Writers: Cameron Porsandeh and Misha Green. Cast: Billy Campbell, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanimé, Jordan Hayes and Catherine Lemieux. "Helix" is a science fiction and horror television series from the SyFy Network. This series premiered January 10th, 2014, with the launch of two episodes. The episode reviewed here, titled "274," is Epis. 3 in a thirteen episode first season. "274" brought a few more thrills in its short fourty-two minute runtime. An infection continues to spread in an isolated Arctic research facility, but the show's pacing is becoming a little less infectious. Events are slowing down on the show as the series shifts from action elements to dramatic ones. However, the series still comes across as fresh with as new, deadly situations keep the good doctors on their toes. In this episode, the five member research team is moving infected patients around, on the research facility. Those infected with a virulent retrovirus are.

Syfy’s Helix is just what I’ve been missing in my TV viewing life. Cool, creepy, smart, fast-paced, compelling, super-serialized, and full of mysteries – and maybe even a conspiracy or two. The kind of show I can really sink my teeth into, the kind of show that warrants rewatching at least once a week. Twice is better.
And speaking of twice, the show’s creator, Cameron Porsandeh, very kindly agreed to a second interview with SciFi Mafia, on premiere day. He gave some terrific insights into the process, the scariest science, and A Head’S Up About A Clue …
I asked him if he would happy to have people obsess over the show, rewatching and dissecting and taking notes and theorizing, or if he’d prefer that viewers just relax and go along for the ride.
We built in a mystery and we very much wanted people to wonder...

Two of the stars of Syfy's "Helix" spent some time speaking with journalists recently, and we have the highlights here, including how they've developed their characters, whether they've been creeped out while filming, and lots more.
The series, which airs Friday nights at 10/9c, is the latest brainchild of Ron Moore, creator of “Battlestar Galactica," and if you've been watching, you'll know Mark Ghanimé as Major Sergio Balleseros and Catherine (Cat) Lemieux as veterinarian Doreen Boyle.
Things kicked off with a bit of discussion about their characters.
Q: Mark, are we going to learn more of your character's back story?
Mark Ghanimé: I really hope you do… you just have to wait and find out as far as when the episodes get released. But there's definitely going to be some interesting stuff developing with my character. He's got a lot of… he's multi-faceted let's just say. So we're going to see some surprises…...

If you’ve recently found yourself roaming the pages of SciFi Mafia, we thank you. Secondarily, you may have noticed we’ve devoted a fair amount of space to Syfy‘s new series Helix. That’s not just because Battlestar Galactica‘s Ron Moore is an executive producer of the show, though he is, and it’s not just because the creator of the series, Cameron Porsandeh, is a really terrific guy who has given us two exclusive interviews (the first is here, the second will be posted soon), though he has.
Nor is it because SciFi Mafia attended a really cool set tour and panel interview in Montreal, though that’s true as well. The fact of the matter is that Helix has been given a lot of space here because one, it sounded like it would be a great series, and two, because it turned out that it is a great series.

1.1 Pilot & 1.2 Vector
After sitting through the pilot of Syfy's new thriller Helix, I really wasn’t sure if those behind it found the whole exercise a personal massive joke, or this was seriously the best ideas they could come up with. The two pilot episodes welded into a single screening provide both highs and lows along with the occasional scare and a little mystery along the way.
The show laid its paper-thin premise down in the previously aired first fifteen minutes. It’s finally here, after all these months of waiting and waiting. Helix, Syfy‘s new science-filled thriller executive produced by Battlestar Galactica‘s Ron Moore, is hitting our screens tonight with not only a double episode, but limited commercial interruptions. Thank you, Syfy!

If you’ve read my spoiler-free review of the premiere, you know I loved it. So I asked them what they love about the show:
Kyra Zagorsky: I love the psychological thriller piece of it. I think that because we are trapped in this isolated environment with a deadly virus, what’s really interesting is that everyone’s darkness comes out because we’ve got these life and death stakes going on...

December is now half over, believe it or not, which means January premieres are right around the corner. One of the most highly anticipated is the premiere of Helix, and to help us prepare, Syfy has released four new featurettes that give a lot more information about what’s ahead:
Featurette: Helix – Overview
Featurette: Helix – Characters

Very cute, Syfy. That’s okay, we can wait, but only just barely. Make sure to check out SciFiMafia.com’s exclusive interview with Helix‘s creator, and our pictures of the sets and cast and props from recent set tour.
Helix, starring Billy Campbell, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanimé, Jordan Hayes, Meegwun Fairbrother, Catherine Lemieux and Neil Napier, premieres a double episode with limited commercial interruption on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 10/9c on Syfy.

Syfy has now released a nice long trailer for us to devour, along with some helpful character descriptions, which I’ve paired with pictures taken during SciFiMafia.com‘s set tour in October.

We’ve been telling you about Syfy‘s new series Helix since it was picked up straight to series back in March. We knew it was something about a disease in a lab in the arctic, but not much else. Since then we’ve seen a synopsis and a trailer (reprinted below if you need a refresher), but questions remain.
I learned a lot more about the show when I visited the Montreal set last month; you can see some of those photos here. While in Montreal I also learned from a Syfy exec that this is the show to watch for those of us who love good, meaty, smart, challenging science fiction. “Very” serialized,...

A new trailer has been released for Ron Moore's new SyFy series Helix. I think this looks like it's going to be a really good series. It has an eerily cool X-Files kind of vibe, which kind of makes sense because because it comes from the producers of the series.
