Premiering at the prestigious Venice Film Festival, Society of the Snow is Director J.A. Bayona’s take on the story of the infamous 1972 Uruguayan Air Force flight that crashed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Chartering a rugby team to Chile, only 29 of the 45 passengers survived the crash. Finding themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
Based on the book “La Sociedad de la Nieve” by Pablo Vierci, the film utilizes Vierci’s strong ties to the remaining survivors of the crash, many of whom he knew from childhood. The filmmakers recorded more than 100 hours of interviews with all of the living survivors and the actors had access to them & their families as well.
With a reported budget of around 60-70 million, Bayona spared no expense to bring the highest level of authenticity to the project.

The lore of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which fell out of the sky and crashed into the South American Andes in 1972, typically summons grisly images of cannibalism and gangrene. The 72 days that a Uruguayan rugby team en route to Chile endured, snow-drifted and hungry, have been dramatized elsewhere, including the 1993 survival drama “Alive,” starring a mostly white and Anglicized cast. Now, after a moment under the tentpole sun with the ill-conceived “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona returns to the style of more personal and human disasters with “Society of the Snow.” Shot in Spanish with Uruguayan accents, this muscular and often brutal depiction is chiseled with authenticity, but it’s too psychologically schematic to make much in the way of an emotional impact.

Spain has selected J.A. Bayona’s latest film, Society of the Snow, which debuted last month at the Venice Film Festival, as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2024 Oscars.
The announcement marks the first time a Netflix-backed film has been selected by Spain and the second time J.A. Bayona has made the cut following his 2007 film The Orphanage.
Society of the Snow closed this year’s Venice Film Festival. Based on the book of the same name by Pablo Vierci, first published in 2008, the film charts the story of the 45 people who, on October 13, 1972, boarded Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 from Montevideo to Chile. There were five crew members on board and 40 passengers, including 19 members of the Old Christians Club rugby team. Society of the Snow: Netflix releases an ominous teaser based on a remarkable true story of survival
In 1993, Frank Marshall released the film, Alive, which was based on the extraordinary true story of a Uruguayan rugby team battling for survival after their plane had crashed in the Andes. The movie starred Ethan Hawke, Vincent Spano, and Josh Hamilton. Now, J.A. Bayona, the director of The Impossible and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, brings us a new film based on the book Society of the Snow: The Definitive Account of the World’s Greatest Survival Story about the same events.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
“In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s “Society of the Snow,” a reconstruction of a 1972 plane crash in the Andes that forced survivors to take extreme measures, including cannibalism, has been set as the Venice Film Festival’s closing film.
The deeply immersive Spanish-language saga is a Netflix original film shot in Andalusia’s Sierra Nevada, mainland Spain’s highest mountain range, using a 300-person crew. “Society of the Snow” will world premiere on the Lido out of competition on Sept. 9. Its official screening will be held in the Palazzo del Cinema after the awards ceremony.

Director J.A. Bayona – whose credits include The Orphanage, The Impossible, A Monster Calls, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – has set up a Spanish-language thriller at the Netflix streaming service. Titled Society of the Snow, or La sociedad de la nieve, the film is an adaptation of the non-fiction book of the same name, written by Pablo Vierci. The film is about the Uruguayan rugby team which, en route to Chile in 1972, crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. The survivors were forced to resort to extreme measures in order to stay alive.

Move over “Yellowjackets,” there’s a new survival thriller involving a plane crash and cannibalism in the works. THR reports today that J.A. Bayona is reteaming with his Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom composer, Michael Giacchino (The Batman), for Society of the Snow (La sociedad de la nieve), a Netflix Spanish-language thriller based on true events.
Society of the Snow will tell “the story of the Uruguayan rugby team which, en route to Chile in 1972, crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes. The survivors were forced to resort to extreme measures in order to stay alive.”
The true events that the survival thriller will be based on puts the emphasis on “extreme measures.” The chartered Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed into the Andes mountains on October 13, 1972 and resulted in grisly deaths and injuries. Weather conditions complicated search efforts and was called off altogether, forcing survivors to take extreme...

Netflix’s Spanish Civil War zombie movie Valley of the Dead (Malnazidos) is an entertaining stumble through familiar undead territory, courtesy of co-directors Javier Ruiz Caldera and Alberto de Toro. As such, it won’t surprise anyone who’s seen a zombie movie before, but it pushes all the right buttons, thanks to genre-savvy direction, likeable performances and a snappy script.
Valley of the Dead begins in 1938, in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, which has bitterly divided the losing Republican side and the Nazi-assisted Franco-led Nationalist side. In a chilling opening sequence, Nazi soldiers murder a wedding party and then spray the corpses with a blue gas, under the watchful eye of their Commandant (Francisco Reyes).

Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Intruders has perhaps one twist too many. Actually, it has a couple of twists piled on top of one central twist concerning two children in different countries being menaced by what seems to be a supernatural presence. Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques' screenplay does something strange by the end: it actually removes the stakes of everything that came before with its trio of revelations that at first test and then demolish any credulity the movie had built up by that point. I'll try not to spoil Intruders, although it takes a while before Fresnadillo's film takes any kind of shape that's worth describing. We're initially introduced to Juan (Izán Corchero) a young Spanish boy who, on one rainy night, comes under...

*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by Millenium Entertainment. **here be some minor spoilers. Director: Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Writers: Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques. Cast: Clive Owen, Carice van Houten, Daniel Brühl, Pilar López de Ayala and Ella Purnell. There is a disappointing thought that emerges after watching Intruders: that is it? The script from Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques sets up a fairly limp fish, which is mediocre through the second and third acts. The acting from Clive Owen and Carice van Houten is much better than the script. However, the film is hampered by a partially fleshed out story that is mostly lacking in terror. Casariego and Marques do manage to create some interest with their dual storytelling style. The film begins with Juan (Izán Corchero) and a mysterious figure. This figure wants to steal Juan's face as he feels he has no identity of his own.

The horror genre is primarily about facing ones fears, even if those manifestations are the faceless shapes of masked murderers or deformed nightmares. Jason, Freddy, and Mike Myers all represent a frightening idea and, in the movies, they prey on those that fear them the most.
In Intruders, the antagonist is a hooded menace called Hollowface, a generic Grim Reaper phantasm that lurks in the shadows and slinks through open windows to steal the faces of children. For anyone ten and under, Hollowface is the bogeyman. The closet creature that preys on those foolish few who believe in and, more importantly, fear him. However, by limiting Hollowface’s targets, the danger is similarly inhibited, and it may be difficult for adults to feel afraid of this latest thing that goes bump in the night.
Despite the kid-centered fears, the primary perspective is that of John Farrow (Clive Owen), a middle-aged construction engineer in London.

How do you make the most of a ghost story in the age of post-meta horror films? If you're Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, you run with the idea of a fairy tale until you've copied and pasted so many tropes that "Intruders" emerges as a messy puddle.
Pint-sized author Juan (Izán Corecho) is reading his latest horror story to his mother (Pilar López de Ayala) before she tucks him in, chiding him that his story has no ending, a helpful bit of foreshadowing. Juan climbs out onto a scaffold to find his cat when a cloaked figure seems to slide up to building and into his window. Inside, Juan's mother is choked by the creature until he intervenes and escapes back out the window with the specter on his heels. After a short walk off an even shorter platform, the figure falls over and Juan is left crying in his mother's arms.

Faceless minions are not what the movie Intruders is about. Instead, it is about a supernatural force bent on possessing two children who live quite literally worlds apart. This dark shadowy entity is after 13-year old Mia (Ella Purnell) and her father, John Farrow (Clive Owen), can do very little to help save her ... or can he?
Filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) helms this movie. The trailer that recently released shows that Mia is an aspiring writer. Her voice over makes for an interesting set up which creates a potentially sinister tone for the film. Her British accent helps add to the ambience, and hopefully this movie will not be another Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. This film seems to have influences from M. Night Shyamalan's Signs as well.
Thankfully the MPAA rating of R is the right step for at least suggesting the chills are indeed...

When Juan Carlos Fresnadillo burst onto the scene with his Spanish-language feature “Intacto” in 2001, many took notice, including director Danny Boyle who would pass the torch of the undead along to the young helmer for the second installment of the “28 Days Later” franchise. Paying respects to Boyle’s work, while also acting as a perfectly capable standalone film, 2007’s “28 Weeks Later” surpassed many audience’s expectations. With so much momentum in his career, it was odd to watch the hype surrounding Fresnadillo dissipate, and that was certainly not helped by Bradley Cooper-starring remake of “The Crow” stalling before it ever really got off the ground. But never fear, Fresnadillo is back with “Intruders,” starring Clive Owen, Carice Van Houten, and Daniel Bruhl in what is seemingly an update of the boogeyman mythos. The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced the highly anticipated features in its Midnighters section, as well as the complete short films lineup, which will debut at this year’s Festival from March 9-17, 2012 in Austin, Texas.
The eleven films announced in the 2012 Midnighters program include a feast of titles that promise to rouse, haunt, and thrill the eager SXSW late-night audiences with an eclectic mix of thrills from genre filmmakers at the top of their game.
“Though our regular program already includes a healthy sampling of genre fare, the Midnighters section highlights those that go a bit crazier, gorier, and all-around balls out-ier,” said SXSW Senior Programmer and Operations Manager Jarod Neece. “This year's program includes both veteran names with anticipated follow-ups and fresh discoveries with new voices and charts otherworldly, insane territories that breathe new life into horror conventions.”

Following the announcement of the majority of South by Southwest’s 2012 line-up including Cabin in the Woods, 21 Jump Street, The Raid and Casa de mi Padre, the midnight section has been unveiled today. Most notably there is V/H/S, a horror anthology we enjoyed at Sundance (review here), as well as Clive Owen-starring Intruders and the third film in the [Rec] quadrilogy. The nazi space movie Iron Sky is also part of line-up and a “super secret” screening. Check out the midnight premieres below for the fest kicking off on March 9th and head over to the official site for the shorts announcement, including a new one from Don Hertzfeldt.

From the visionary fimmaker of 28 Weeks Later comes a creepy little film called Intruders. This one looks right up our alley and releases in March. Check out the trailer under the official details.
Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow’s beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out.
From visionary filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later, the upcoming Highlander reboot), Intruders is the chilling story of two children living in different countries, each visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them.

The first official Us poster for Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s (28 Weeks Later) upcoming chiller, Intruders has officially landed, and it’s an eerie little gem. While not exactly a revealing piece of work, the poster certainly sends a bit of shiver down the spine; if I’m going to look at Clive Owen, I prefer to look at a fully featured Clive Owen, the whole absent feature aspect is a tad unsettling. Intruders stars Clive Owen, Carice van Houten, Daniel Brühl and Kerry Fox. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directs from a script penned by Nicolás Casariego and Jaime Marques. The picture lands in Us theaters this April.
