"There are a lot of women who really like the thought of a man cleaning their house." Brainstorm Media has revealed an official US trailer for an Australian indie sex comedy called How to Please a Woman, both written and directed by filmmaker Renée Webster. The film opens later this month in a few American cities, and it also played at the 2022 Bentonville Film Festival. This looks like pure unadulterated fun! When her all-male house-cleaning business gets out of control, a mature woman must embrace her own sexuality, if she is to make a new life for herself. The film is described as "a precarious, often hilarious and revealing journey into the vulnerable world of what women really want and how hard it can be to get it right." Starring Sally Phillips as Gina, with Erik Thomson, Alexander England, Ryan Johnson, Caroline Brazier, Josh Thomson, Hayley McElhinney, and Tasma Walton.

"That's it, mate. They're taking the whole bloody valley..." Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official US trailer for the US release of Rams, the English-language remake of the award-winning Icelandic film of the same name from 2015. This Australian remake stars Sam Neill and Michael Caton as sheep farmers, and as brothers who don't like each other and haven't talked to each other in 40 years. When a livestock disease hits their farms, the local townspeople bond together trying to figure out the right way to survive. Also starring Miranda Richardson, Asher Keddie, & Hayley McElhinney. The original from Iceland is worth a watch, and I'm not usually a fan of English-language remakes. But I'll be darned if this doesn't look great! Not too cheesy, not too sentimental, a nice balance of humor and sheep and brotherly love/hate. Here's the full US trailer (+ new poster) for Jeremy Sims' Rams, direct from...

"You have opened a door to the past... I must go through." Gravitas Ventures has released the official US trailer for the indie photographer drama Hearts and Bones, which is finally getting a US release on VOD this fall. The film originally premiered at a few key film festivals last year, and it already opened in Australia earlier this summer (watch the first trailer). The Australian drama stars Hugo Weaving as a veteran war photographer, who befriends a Sudanese refugee while back home in Australia. Preparing for an upcoming exhibition, his new friend gets involved in his process and questions whether photos from a massacre in his village should be displayed. The film also stars Andrew Luri, Hayley McElhinney, & Bolude Watson. It's a solid drama with a complex relationship at its core, explored in a compelling way thanks to Weaving taking on such an intricate role. He's matched by Luri's profound performance as well.

Claire Gandy, Event Cinemas general manager, film and content, has seen the movie starring Michael Caton, Sam Neill and Miranda Richardson and is super confident of its commercial prospects.
“The audiences are going to be 100 per cent behind Rams and many of the other upcoming Australian films,” Gandy said in a webinar with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner.
“We forget what it’s like to watch a great Australian film in cinema. There are some great scenes in Rams which on a big screen are going to look fantastic. I look forward to the celebration of Australian film, whenever that may start.”

Premiering in 2015 at Cannes Film Festival, where it picked up the Prix Un Certain Regard, Grímur Hákonarson’s Rams is an emotional, formally striking look at estranged brothers surviving as sheep farmers in the harsh climate of Iceland. The country’s Oscar contender, the English-language remake rights quickly got snatched up and now it looks like the film is complete as it is on display for buyers on the Cannes market.
Directed by Jeremy Sims, the remake stars Sam Neill and Michael Caton, and the first trailer has now arrived. Seemingly taking on the same plot, the tone here seems to swing a little more upbeat and palatable, which isn’t necessarily a surprise considering the hope for a wider audience than the original.
Also starring Miranda Richardson, Asher Keddie, and Hayley McElhinney, see the first trailer below via ScreenDaily.
Rams (the remake) does not currently have U.S. distribution.

"Smells like sheep!" West End Films has debuted an official promo trailer for Rams, the English-language remake of the award-winning Icelandic film of the same name from 2015. The original film from Iceland is fantastic, and it's always a bit sad to see them remake it in exactly the same way, but this looks like it has the same awkward charm. Plus it's Sam Neill! Seems like the perfect role for him, he already lives with all kinds of farm animals. Actually looks like a worthwhile remake. Here's the first official promo trailer for Jeremy Sims' Rams,...

We have a trailer for you to check out for the Australian drama Hearts and Bones, starring Hugo Weaving.
The film deals with a war photographer who goes home to Australia between tours and, while dealing with severe Ptsd, prepares for an exhibit in which he will show the photos from his career. A Sudanese refugee (played by Andrew Luri) now living in Australia has a lot to lose if one particular photo goes public, so he befriends Weaving’s character, and the two embark on a friendship, both riding the emotional waves of a life post-war.
Hearts and Bones was directed by newcomer Ben Lawrence, who co-wrote the screenplay with Beatrix Christian. The film also stars Hayley McElhinney and Bolude Watson.
This looks like a heavy film, but a powerful one with an important story to tell. Check out the trailer below, and let us know if you’re interested in this film.

After witnessing famed Australian war photographer Daniel Fisher (Hugo Weaving) endure a traumatic experience in Iran during the opening of Ben Lawrence’s Hearts and Bones, the sudden shift to a taxi driver (Andrew Luri’s Sebastian Ahmed) will seem abrupt. It’s not, however, a coincidence that the latter recognizes the former’s name on the radio since they have a shared history courtesy of a small Sudanese village. Dan was on assignment during a massacre fifteen years ago that claimed the lives of Sebastian’s family. One documented the nightmare to guarantee the world couldn’t ignore this atrocity while the other subsequently spent years trying to forget it. What should Dan do when the refugee asks him to exclude those sensitive, personal images from his new exhibit? Where do truth and decency diverge?

Time spent in a modern war zone can be traumatic for participant and observer alike, yet across continents and cultures, the shared experiences of living and loving in the wake of such experiences can be startlingly similar. This is multi-faceted and overarching theme woven throughout Ben Lawrence’s sensitive and affecting new Australian drama “Hearts and Bones,” an impressive narrative feature debut from the winner of last year’s Sydney Film Festival documentary prize for “Ghosthunter.”
Lawrence’s thoughtful drama also casts an illuminating light on the current hot-button issue of immigrants to Australia and their place in the social fabric, specifically in the Western Sydney suburbs in which it is filmed. The film’s second-place finish in the narrative section of the fest’s audience award (behind Samuel Van Grinsven’s “Sequin in a Blue Room”) suggests it struck a chord with traditionally partisan Aussie audiences, and with proper handling,...

Miranda Richardson has signed on for the English-language remake of Un Certain Regard winner “Rams.” The British star of stage and screen joins a cast that includes Sam Neill and Michael Caton on the movie, which is currently shooting in western Australia.
Richardson plays Kat, the local veterinarian of a sheep-farming town hit by a rare disease affecting the flocks of estranged brothers Colin and Les, played by Neill and Caton, respectively. Jeremy Sims (L) with Sam Neill on the set of ‘Rams’ (Photo credit: Merlyn Moon).
Jeremy Sims was promoting his drama Last Cab to Darwin on the international film festival circuit in 2015 when he noticed Icelandic film Hrútar featured in nearly every program.
His curiosity piqued, he watched writer-director Grímur Hákonarson’s film – the tale of two warring brothers, both sheep farmers – at the Busan festival in Korea, and was hugely impressed. The same year it won best film at Un Certain Regard in Cannes.
So it was a fortuitous coincidence when one of the producers, Wbmc’s Aidan O’Bryan rang his agent earlier this year to ask if he would direct a re-imagining of the film entitled Rams after acquiring the adaptation rights.
Sims loved the screenplay by Western Australian-born writer Jules Duncan, which is a complete reinterpretation of the original, and readily accepted the offer. Produced by O’Bryan and Janelle Landers,...

A little bit Northern Exposure and a little bit Doc Martin, The Heart Guy (Doctor Doctor in its native Australia) is another entrant in the “talented Doctor forced to tend to small town rubes” genre. Much as it may seem that we wouldn’t need another run at such a pinpoint premise, it turns out that we may need a few more, because it apparently can’t miss.
The uniqueness to the spin here is that our Australian heart surgeon, Hugh Knight (Rodger Corser), is put on the Impaired Registrants List after his party lifestyle takes an ugly turn, and he has to serve a year as a Gp in a rural area as his punishment. The kicker is that he is assigned to his own hometown, which means he gets to see a lot of his parents and his ex-girlfriend, Charlie (Nicole de Silva), who is now married to his brother,...

Jennifer Kent’s disturbing directorial debut The Babadook arrives on Blu-ray this week, scoring some of the most critically acclaimed notices ever for a recent psychological horror film. With The Exorcist director William Friedkin’s glowing praise splashed over the front and back cover, proclaiming that he has “never seen a more terrifying film,” and that it will “scare the hell out of you as it did me,” (horror master Stephen King also submits his stamp of approval), Kent’s film has reached a level of unprecedented cultural saturation since premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Though pulling in a surprisingly paltry sum at the domestic box office in Australia, foreign markets embraced the film, including in France, the UK, and the Us, bringing its worldwide box office to just under five million.

Title: The Babadook Director: Jennifer Kent Starring: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Tim Purcell and Hayley McElhinney Conquering your fears to fully achieve your goals can at times be a more terrifying journey than whatever obstacles are placed in your way. Jennifer Kent, who made her feature film writing and directorial debuts with the new horror thriller, ‘The Babadook,’ powerfully overcame the challenges she faced while making the movie independently, and her strong will captivatingly carried into her resilient characters. While the movie, which kicked off the After Dark screenings section of the 2014 Savannah Film Festival, features enthralling mother and son protagonists who initially appeared to be naïve as they [ Read More ]

Just saying Babadook can gives any viewer the chills.
From IFC Midnight, “The Babadook” is a truly scary film about a mythical creature leaping out of a children’s story to haunt a mother and her son.
Here’s the synopsis:
Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Essie Davis) is at a loss. She struggles to discipline her 'out of control' 6 year-old, Samuel (Noah Wiseman), a son she finds impossible to love. Samuel's dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing storybook called 'The Babadook' turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he's been dreaming about. His hallucinations spiral out of control, he becomes more unpredictable and violent. Amelia, genuinely frightened by her son's behavior, is forced to medicate him. But when Amelia begins to see glimpses of...

The Weinstein Company’s The Imitation Game is the big kid on the block among this holiday weekend’s batch of newcomers. The title is following in the footsteps of past TWC heavyweights The King’s Speech and The Artist, both of which opened to solid box office numbers and eventually scored Oscars for Best Picture. The distributor is expecting good numbers for Imitation Game over the Thanksgiving frame. IFC Films’ horror pic The Babadook has some good buzz heading into the weekend, though it might show its biggest heft via VOD with its day-and-date rollout. Remote Area Medical is one of those films one hopes everyone will see. Timed perfectly for this time of the year’s focus on thanks and giving, the documentary shows the underbelly of America’s healthcare crisis by way of people who provide free medical services to needy people in pop-up clinics around the country.

From Australia comes what is possibly the most scary and well made horror film in years. Here's Ryan's review of The Babadook...
A good horror film offers the kind of entertaining shocks you’d expect from a ghost train ride. A great horror film brings depth, subtext and character as well jolts of terror - they leave us with something that lingers and makes us shudder long after the cinema’s closed for the night. Australian chiller The Babadook undoubtedly falls into the latter category.
Australian writer and director Jennifer Kent’s film is told largely from the tired, wan perspective of Amilia (Essie Davis), a mother who lost her husband in a car accident just under seven years earlier. That fateful crash occurred while Amilia was being driven to hospital to have her son, Sam (Noah Wiseman), meaning that his birthday has a sad dual significance.
