After experimenting with his form of boundary-pushing, cinema-as-memory films to great, succesful lengths with his last three narrative features–not to mention Voyage of Time, which we’re still awaiting an actual U.S. release for–Terrence Malick will return to more of a traditional script with his WWII drama Radegund, hopefully releasing later this year. But first, after splicing in avant-garde and experiential touches with his last few films, he’s making the natural step into virtual reality.
Premiering at South by Southwest Festival–where he gave a rare public talk last year–on March 13 is the Vr experience Together, which is directed by Malick and shot by cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto (Silence, The Wolf of Wall Street, Brokeback Mountain). Clocking in at 5 minutes and 46 seconds and featuring music by Simon Franglen, see the synopsis below, as well as the first look above.
“Together” is a Vr experience about the power of human connection.

Anyone keen to point the finger (often fairly) at Hollywood for a lack of creativity and a dearth of new ideas in its global economics-driven industry should take a seat for director Katsuyuki Motohiro’s adaptation of Ajin: Demi-Human. Based on Gamon Sakurai’s manga series and following an animated film trilogy as well as an animated television series, Ajin gets the live action film treatment because it’s a medium that hasn’t been exploited yet. The film also comes from a new tradition of manga-based monster movies wherein humanity is about to be consumed by some kind of creature or has already...

Toho certainly knows a thing or two about stretching out PR. Earlier today, a third teaser for Katsuyuki Motohiro‘s Bayside Shakedown: The Movie 3 was uploaded to their Toho Yokoku website. As I tweeted last week, a full trailer for the film also premiered recently on Japanese TV, but that version has yet to be “officially” uploaded.
Bayside Shakedown, aka Odoru Daisosasen, began as a police drama/comedy series which aired on Fuji TV in 1997 and garnered high enough ratings to warrant a bunch of subsequent TV specials and a big budget film series. Kameyama has been closely involved with the franchise since the beginning, having produced the original drama.
The third film again follows longtime protagonist Shunsuke Aoshima (Yuji Oda), who’s recently been promoted to Chief Detective only to be saddled with eight difficult cases including murder, burglary, and a serial bomber.

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. In 2007, Sean posted on Film Junk [2] about a sequel to Stephen Chow’s phenomenally successful Shaolin Soccer. The sequel would be financed and made by Japanese and only be produced by Chow (who is Chinese). The sport highlighted would be lacrosse rather than soccer. Only one comment was made. Chris thought the movie would be worth seeing for the lead actress, Kou Shibasaki. And then later in the year, Sean posted about a teaser trailer [3] for this movie, now titled, Shaolin Girl. And again only one comment was made. Mike said he would probably see it, but he was disappointed that Chow wasn’t directing. And I never gave a second thought about this movie again. Then I watched All About Women, which I reviewed.
