Low budget sci-fi is an interesting sub genre. There’s not too much of it about and it’s hard to get right. With sci-fi people always think flying spaceships and futuristic-looking cities but with no money this is very hard to pull off. So often the best way to go is with clever, future set ideas that don’t need big visuals. Being an anthology movie, 5 Galaxies kind of covers all of these.
The films first segment shows a world that is over-populated and to sort out this problem is culling people on their 40th birthday. The short focuses on one person about to ‘celebrate’ that birthday. It is a more dialogue based segment...

I know that the Sundance Film Festival ended over a week ago, but in the six days I was at Sundance (and on screeners in the days before), I saw 25 movies. I wrote full reviews for 13 of them. My Full Sundance reviews: 'The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz' "The Overnighters" "Rudderless" "Fed Up" "Marmato" "Love Child" "Land Ho!" "The Voices" "Happy Valley" "My Prairie Home" "Life Itself" "Mitt" "Web Junkie" But that left 12 movies that I just didn't have the time to write my usual 1000-to-1750 words on. Since getting back from Park City, I've been slowly working my way through capsule reviews for those 12 movies. These are roughly the length of my Take Me To The Pilots entries, which means that in this format, people are going to complain about all of the text and the lack of paragraphs. Sorry. Because I'm just one part of HitFix's awesome Sundance team,...

Werner Herzog dispensed sage advice Sunday during the International Cinematographers Guild's 16th annual Emerging Cinematographer Awards at the Directors Guild of America Theater in Los Angeles. Among his recommendations to the next generation of cinematographers were to seek out knowledge of celluloid film and to be vigilant during the shooting of a scene to avoid excess coverage. "Be bold, develop your own vision, and stick to it. And don't be afraid -- because you are the future," Herzog encouraged the honorees. Eli Roth contributed his own words of wisdom from Las Vegas via a recorded video message. Shorts from the honorees were screened during the ceremony. Among those recognized were camera operator John Barr ("The Carrier"), 1st AC Daron Keet ("Ripple Effect"), camera operator Brian O'Carroll ("Angel"), camera operator Michael Pescasio ("Don't Let Your Love Annihilate"), camera operator James...

The International Cinematographers Guild presented its newly rebranded Emerging Cinematographer Awards Sunday at the DGA theatre. Several hundred attended the presentation and reception.
This year's honorees are: Brian O'Carroll (for the film Cherry Bloom), Christopher Johnson (Common Practice), Darren Genet (The Death Strip), Tim Bellen (Ed Meets His Maker), Michael Alba (History For Kids), Hilda Mercado (La Primavera), Jozo Zovko (The Morning Fog) and Cameron Duncan (Year of the Dog).
"Cinematography at its best can transport us into a different time and place, even into the beginning of being a different person," said ICG president Steven Poster during his welcome remarks.
"This event is something that (past ICG president) George Spiro Dibie started many years ago and that (event chair) Rob Kositchek, Jr. has been involved in from the beginning," he said of the annual presentation, now in its 11th year, which was previously branded as a Filmmakers Showcase.
"We are growing", Poster added. "We are getting more influential. We are bringing more people in. We are helping more people get started."
The 2007 recipients were selected through judging panels consisting of cinematographers, camera operators and assistants based in the Midwest and the East and West Coasts.
