Jonathan Glazer returned to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, where he shot elements of his Holocaust drama ‘The Zone of Interest,’ on Feb. 15 for the Polish premiere of his acclaimed and Oscar-nominated film.
Speaking after the screening alongside museum director Piotr Cywiński, producer Jim Wilson, producers Ewa Puszczyńska and Bartek Rainski and production designer Chris Oddy, the director explained to the audience what it meant to have been allowed inside the museum — on the site of the concentration camp where more than 1.1 million people were murdered during WWII — to shoot scenes for the feature.
“It was so important to make this film here,” he said. “I felt very palpably the place when I first arrived and I felt that the film had to be about this place, and also had to blur the line between then and now, here and there, a film that would feel present tense, not something...

Jonathan Glazer is set to introduce his widely acclaimed, Oscar-nominated and deeply devastating Holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest” at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum on Thursday (Feb. 15).
In undoubtedly the most important premiere in “The Zone of Interest’s” global rollout, the Polish premiere sees the British director return to Auschwitz, where he shot elements of the movie and where the real-life story is set. Following the screening, Glazer will take part in a discussion with museum director Piotr Cywiński, producer Jim Wilson, producer Ewa Puszczyńska and production designer Chris Oddy.
The film — which bowed in Cannes and won the Grand Prix — centers on the family life of Rudolf Höss, the architect and commandant of Auschwitz, where more than 1.1 million people were murdered by the Nazis during WWII, juxtaposing the blissful domestic existence he enjoys alongside his wife against the backdrop of one of history’s darkest chapters. When looking at filming locations for “The Zone of Interest,” producer James Wilson was hoping that they might be able to use the Rudolf Höss house, which is still standing next to Auschwitz. The fact that it is now a private residence that’s been modernized canceled that idea but he would soon find the perfect place to film. “Where we ended up doing it was almost next to that house, a few hundred meters away on a corner plot that abuts Auschwitz. There was a derelict house that we always used to pass as we were moving around town,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).

How, given the weight of history, and the history of all the other films on the subject, can you make a new film about the Holocaust?
That was the central challenge facing British writer-director Jonathan Glazer and the creative team behind A24’s The Zone of Interest.
“When Jon and I started, back in 2014, to talk about this, about making a film on this subject, we of course knew Schindler’s List and Son of Saul and everything in between,” says Zone producer James Wilson. “And our conversations were all about, ‘What new is there to say about the Holocaust?’ Except that it was evil, which everyone knows and which felt like a straw target.”
Glazer had been “circling around” the idea of doing a Holocaust film for years. “But because the subject is so vast and because of the sensitivities involved, I felt I first needed to educate myself in a deeper way,...

When you live by an elevated train track, near an airport, or across from a highway, then you live with a lot of noise; but even if sound is constantly hitting your ears, your brain tends not to notice it. Our capacity for filtering information is vast, and that filtering is often the mark of great sound design, too. In his work on “Nope,” sound designer Johnnie Burn needed to deliberately erase a lot of the environmental, rustling, incidental sounds that would be present in a California canyon to focus the audience on the slightly-off, uncanny sounds Burn leaves in, the ones that signal the appearance of that film’s antagonist.
But in “The Zone of Interest,” Burn, director Jonathan Glazer, and editor Paul Watts have an entirely different, almost opposite challenge. The film lives in the dissonance between the daily lives of the Höss family and the thing they...

The U.K. has given itself arguably the best chance of landing its first-ever Oscar for best international feature film, having selected The Zone of Interest as its submission.
Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama, which was one of the buzziest titles in Cannes where it won the Grand Prix and Fipresci prize, has been chosen by BAFTA to represent the U.K. in the category formerly known as best foreign language film.
Shot on location in Poland and featuring German and Polish dialogue, the film — a chilling contemplation on the banality of evil and based on the novel by Martin Amis — follows the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, as they strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.

When U.K. writer-director Jonathan Glazer approached Polish cinematographer Łukasz Żal about “The Zone of Interest,” a provocative Holocaust drama adapted from a 2014 novel by Martin Amis, he had a bold proposition for the film, which centers on the domestic life of an Auschwitz commandant and his family living in the shadow of the notorious concentration camp. What if, Glazer suggested, they shoot the scenes inside the Höss family home without a single camera on set?
Working on location, production designer Chris Oddy and his crew built a replica of the camp commandant’s real-life house. Then Oddy, Glazer, Żal and first A.D. Marc Wilson got to work, outfitting the set to accommodate the director’s daring gambit, which would allow the actors to move about the house unobstructed and offer a more natural portrait of the family’s everyday life.
“We drilled the house like Swiss cheese,” Żal says.

An early favorite of the Cannes film festival is Jonathan Glazer’s Zone of Interest, which had a warm audience reception and glowing reviews out of its Friday night premiere. The film is loosely adapted from the Martin Amis novel of the same that tells the story of Rudolf Höss, the camp commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp and his family living as they live a bucolic life just over the wall.
“You never really know why you tackle any subject. This is not something I planned. It’s an ever-evolving journey. I certainly have had the subject in mind for many years,” said writer-director Glazer, whose works include Sexy Beast, Birth, and Under the Skin, during the film’s press conference. Saying that two years after the release of his last feature Under the Skin he was reading about the Holocaust and eventually visited Auschwitz: “It was a very profound week in our life.

There’s no doubt regarding what Cannes’ highest-profile ticket is, but “Killers of the Flower Moon” is unlikely to be the only major Oscar contender produced by the annual event’s 2023 edition. Jonathan Glazer’s A24-produced “The Zone of Interest” premiered on Friday and became “the first instant sensation” of this year’s festival.
Loosely adapted from Martin Amis’ 2014 novel of the same name, the film is a detached, forensic examination of complacency in the face of evil. Hype has steadily been building for months, but tonight’s premiere confirms that Glazer will be a major factor at this year’s Oscars for his Holocaust drama that many, including David Rooney (The Hollywood Reporter), are saying is “like no other” – a feat in and of itself, considering the regular release of projects on the topic. This is only the fourth film directed by Glazer, whose previous feature, “Under the Skin,...

At this point it doesn’t seem a stretch to say that Jonathan Glazer is incapable of making a movie that’s anything less than bracingly original. His 2000 feature debut, Sexy Beast, elevated the British gangster thriller. Four years later, his reincarnation mystery, Birth, got a cool response from most critics but has since been steadily re-evaluated as a spellbinding heir to Rosemary’s Baby. Almost a decade later, he returned with the hypnotically austere sci-fi chiller Under the Skin, about an alien succubus preying on Scottish men and discovering empathy during her killing spree.
Glazer’s new German-language film, The Zone of Interest, which comes after another 10-year absence from features, is a devastating Holocaust drama like no other, which demonstrates with startling effectiveness the British formalist’s unerring control of tonal and visual storytelling. The worst thing you could say about the director is that for such a singular talent,...
