The passing of Patrick Swayze was enough to break your heart. Has there ever really been anyone quite like him? At his best, Swayze was the type of guy who was equally at home playing romantic leads as he was dropping bad guys in action fare. Swayze’s career peaked in 1987, the year he danced his way to the top of the box office in Dirty Dancing. It made him a giant star, with him not only having one of the top-grossing movies of the year but also a huge hit song in a track off the soundtrack album, “She’s Like the Wind”.
While traditional thinking would have led to Swayze acting in a whole slew of romantic movies, he had something a little different in mind. Swayze wanted to become an action hero. The fact is, he was a natural for the genre. His dance training and general...

Danny Brown and Jpegmafia have released their new album, Scaring The Hoes, which finds the duo exuding humor true to their witty fashion. Stream it on Spotify or Apple Music below.
The collaboration between the two rappers is rife with cheeky takes and caricatures about time spent “hanging out with one of my bitches” and spicy lemon pepper wings “extra crispy extra wet,” as Brown jokes on the album’s title track. In addition to hoeish wordplay, the two banter about making music not traditional to the standard form of rap — or at least, sounds that aren’t usually a part of any typical rap formula.
“Scaring The Hoes” isn’t the only song on the record that’s meant to poke fun at the current state of affairs. The opening track “Lean Beef Patty” touches on the rap game by taking shots at Kanye West, with further mentions of Hulk Hogan,...

Jimmy Kimmel will be keeping a look out for potential slappers when he takes to the stage of the Dolby Theater in March to host the Oscars.
Kimmel, who has hosted twice before, addressed the 2023 nominations during Tuesday night’s edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
One thing that surprised him, he noted in his monologue, was that online gambling sites are now taking bets on which films and actors will be winning awards.

In addition, he pointed to one category referencing last year’s infamous Will Smith slap of Chris Rock: “Will any host or award presenter be slapped during the show?” reads the bet.
“If you put 100 on yes, you win 1,200 — which, I have to say, seems like they’re encouraging someone with a gambling problem to slap me,” Kimmel quipped.

The 2023 Oscar nominations were a hot topic on the late night talk shows on Tuesday night, with Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, James Corden and Daily Show guest host Wanda Sykes all joking about this year’s big nominees and snubs.
Kimmel, who’s also hosting the Oscars on March 12, highlighted some of the bets being made ahead of the ceremony, including on who could win certain categories and, perhaps in light of last year’s infamous slap, whether or not a host or presenter will be hit during the show.
Noting that you could bet 100 on yes and win 1,200, Kimmel said it “seems like they’re encouraging someone with a gambling problem to slap me.”

When Jonathan Hillman was growing up in rural Wisconsin, he says he frequently felt “small.” He was a boy in a family of dirt track racers who played with Barbies, who would pull his turtleneck up over his head to make a pretend wig when he was playing with the kid down the street. Like many queer kids, he was often bullied, so dress-up and performance were a kind of refuge for him. “It made me feel bigger,” he recalls.
Fast-forward to 2018, when Hillman was brainstorming ideas for children’s books at his Mfa program.

On Monday, November 13, 2017, Saban Community Clinic celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a fundraising gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, honoring Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, and Peter Benedek, Founding Partner and Board Member of United Talent Agency, for their philanthropic leadership.
Ted Sarandos, with actress Winona Ryder, and actor/comedian Jeff Garlin
Top TV industry executives and celebrities who attended the dinner gala, hosted by the Friends of Saban Community Clinic, the Clinic’s fundraising arm, raised $4.6 million for its healthcare services. Media mogul and philanthropist Haim Saban and his wife, author and artist Cheryl Saban, matched that amount — bringing the fundraising total to $9.2 million!
“The work of the Clinic is critically important. We are truly inspired [by the stories we heard tonight] and are honored to do our part,” said Cheryl Saban.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Clinic’s low-income and uninsured patients. Last year, the Clinic provided more than 100,000 patient visits.

Holy frak! 12 years ago today, audiences first saw one of the greatest (arguably the greatest) science fiction TV shows. It was on December 8, 2003 that the reimagined “Battlestar Galactica” launched with a mini-series on Sci-Fi Channel. Adapted from the campy 1978 “Battlestar,” the 21st century update to the series delivered a starkly different in tone: It’s dark, layered, often bleak, and socially resonant. Like all good sci-fi should, the series had real-world relevance, as it mirrored and reflected upon our post-9/11 society. The series won a Peabody Award in 2005 with praise for the writers' ability to craft “plotlines that are deeply personal and relatable, while never compromising their affinity and passion for science fiction.” Fans latched onto the military drama of the series, the special effects-driven battle sequences, the mystery and debate of “who’s a Cylon?”, utterly unique and moving music by Bear McCreary, and, of course, beloved, flawed, relatable characters like Roslin and Adama,...

The Rock is an asskicker. Put someone or something in front of him, and he.ll kick its ass. Stone Cold Steve Austin? A franchise with diminishing box office returns? He.s ready to handle anything, including, apparently, an earthquake. Watch the trailer for San Andreas below. Directed by Brad Peyton, the film follows The Rock and his ex-wife Carla Gugino in the aftermath of an earthquake that rips apart California. He.s a helicopter pilot, and they decide to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco to save their daughter, played by Alexandra Daddario. Trust me, you remember her from True Detective. It reportedly cost about $100 million to make, and judging by these graphics, it looks like the money was well spent. As with most disaster pictures, San Andreas targets . and topples . California (to the haunting tones of the famous "California Dreamin" by The Mamas and the Papas). The...

Singer/songwriter Brian Wilson, founder of The Beach Boys.
During my time at Venice Magazine I was lucky enough to meet and interview most of my heroes from the world of film. Fortune smiled on me further when a few musical idols were thrown into the mix, as well (see previously-posted chats with Lou Reed, Quincy Jones and Robbie Robertson). When I learned in October of 2002 that I was going to interview legendary Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson, I was elated. I had gotten to literally stand next to Wilson nearly a decade earlier, at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, while he gave a private recital, just Wilson and a white Steinway, for a small gathering of people in a Park City tavern, celebrating the premiere of Don Was’ documentary "Brian Wilson: I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times," which took a candid look at Wilson’s tumultuous life.

Mackenzie Phillips appeared on the CBS "Early Show" to talk about the impact of her startling revelation that she had an incestuous relationship with her father. The former "One Day at a Time" child star created a stir when she documented a 10-year consensual sexual relationship with dad John Phillips in her memoir, High on Arrival. "I was hoping to help incest survivors and find some redemption and freedom," she said on the "Early Show." "I never expected this huge national dialogue," she added. "I never expected the rape and incest network to have a 82 percent rise in hits on their website a 26 percent rise in telephone calls." Though her family is split in their reaction to the news, Mackenzie has emerged as a voice speaking out against abuse. High on Arrival is now available at bookstores.

Actress Bijou Phillips has been left devastated by her sister MacKenzie's incest revelations, insisting she can't believe their father, Mamas & The Papas star John Phillips, once raped his daughter and then enjoyed a decade-long consensual affair with her.
Mackenzie has revealed all about her twisted romance with her father in her new memoir, High on Arrival, and she stunned America on Wednesday when she spoke out about the affair on daytime TV show Oprah.
The actress' stepmother Michelle Phillips, who was also a member of the Mamas & The Papas, immediately fired back at the claims, suggesting Mackenzie's recollections could not be believed - because she's a longtime drug abuser, and now her stepsister has spoken in defence of her father.
Bijou Phillips insists it's not the first time she has heard her sister's outrageous claims, stating, "When I was 13, Mackenzie told me that she had a consensual sexual relationship with our father. This news was confusing and it was also scary, as I lived alone with him since I was three. I didn't know what to believe and it didn't help that shortly thereafter Mackenzie told me it didn't happen."
In a statement to Oprah Winfrey's show, Bijou added, "Mackenzie's history with our father is hers, but also clouded with 30 years of drug abuse. I hope she can come to terms with this and find peace.
"The life I had with my father was very different; he was Mr. Mom, he was encouraging and loving. The man that raised me would never be capable of doing such things, and if he was, it is heartbreaking for me to think that my family would leave me alone with him.
"I understand Mackenzie's need to come clean with a history that she feels will help others but it's devastating to have the world watch as we try to mend broken fences, especially as the man in question isn't here to defend himself."
Re-appearing on the show, Mackenzie admitted she hated the idea of falling out with her stepsister, who bailed her out after her drug arrest last year.
She said, "I love my baby sister and I miss having contact with her. I understand how this is for her and my heart goes out to her."
Phillips was then questioned by Winfrey about why she left her stepsister with her father when she knew of his deviant nature.
The actress said, "Maybe I did her a disservice... but I felt she was safe. I did go there and I did take her out of there at one point, where I felt like she wasn't being watched properly. I didn't feel she was in any sexual danger."
She added, "I have done my best to protect Bijou, even through this firestorm."
Mackenzie was joined by her other stepsister, Chynna Phillips, on the Oprah show on Friday. Chynna believes her sister's claims.

Two years ago I wrote a lengthy Vanity Fair profile of Michelle Phillips, who, along with her then husband John Phillips, Cass Elliott, and Denny Doherty, jump-started the sybaritic phase of the counterculture with their iconic group, The Mamas and the Papas. What struck me most, and what I tried to convey in the piece, was what a survivor Michelle has been. With pragmatism, wit, and a polished form of street smarts, she made it through the tumultuous years of sex, drugs, and rock-’n’-roll that battered or killed so many of her friends and partners—foremost among them John Phillips, whose destructiveness was too florid even for Keith Richards, who once kicked Phillips out of his house for being too out-of-control. Incidentally, father-daughter incest played a role in my story. As a young teenager, Michelle’s mentor had been an older girl, Tamar Hodel, who at age 16 had been raped by her father,...

"At Oprah, at the publisher, and at Mackenzie, who should be on a psychiatrist's couch, not on TV." Michelle is not quite ready to concede that her former husband and the father of her daughter, Chynna Phillips, could have committed such heinous acts. "Is this all true? We'll never know, because she waited until John was dead," she said, adding that she was worried about how the news will impact other members of the Phillips family. Ick, ick, ick. We don't want to read Mackenzie Phillips' account of her "consensual" relationship with Papa John Phillips. We don't want to see Oprah Winfrey devote airtime to the alleged rape, abortion, drugs and unsettling etc. We don't want to relive the whole sordid story in People. We don't want to hear it. Any of it. And that might be the ickiest thing of all. Understand, the ick factor we're feeling is not about whether the former sitcom star is lying, although some, including stepmother Michelle Phillips, think she is; the ick factor is about the subject matter. Incest. Jennifer Storm works with assault survivors as executive director...

Troubled actress MacKenzie Phillips hopes her family will emerge "stronger" from the incest controversy she sparked by detailing her perverse relationship with her late father, despite the fact many relatives have ostracised her.
The former child star details her sick romance with the late The Mamas & The Papas singer John Phillips in her new memoir High On Arrival, revealing she had an incestuous romance with the California Dreamin' singer for a decade.
Her accusations have split her family in two - her sister Chyna Phillips and ex-stepmum Genevieve Phillips, John's wife from 1972 to 1985, have voiced their support for the former child star, while others have been less supportive.
On Wednesday her former stepmother Michelle Phillips, who was married to John from 1962 to 1970, blasted the recovered drug addict for further spilling the details of her relationship with her dad in a highly-publicised TV interview with Oprah Winfrey, suggesting the allegations were made up.
She told The Hollywood Reporter's Roger Friedman, "John was a bad parent, and a drug addict... (but) if she thinks it's true, why isn't she with a good psychiatrist on a couch? ...I have every reason to believe it's untrue. Oprah should be more judicious about who she has on her show.
"Mackenzie has a lot of mental illness. She's had a needle stuck up her arm for 35 years."
The actress wishes relations between her and Michelle were better, but admits she can't blame her and other family members for refusing to believe her claims.
During an appearance on America's Today Show on Thursday, Mackenzie said, "I love my family, I've gone out of my way to tell my story in High On Arrival. And our experiences with our dad were very different, thank God.
"I love my sisters, I love my brothers, I love Michelle. I wish that I had all of their support but I don't and that's alright, I understand. This is very difficult, and to be revealed on a public level just like this is very difficult and my heart goes out to them. God willing, as a family we will be stronger when this all dies down."
But Phillips has one person she can always count on - her son Shane, born in 1987, from her romance with rocker Michael Barakan, aka Shane Fontayne.
She adds, "I sat down with him about a month ago, and I said you need to prepare. As a family we need to prepare for some of the hard truths that are going to come out of this book. I sat down and took him through it and he looked at me and put his head on my shoulder and said, 'Poor mama. You better tell dad!' He's an amazing kid and nothing but supportive of me."...

In a world of messed up musicians' kids, Mackenzie Phillips has reached the pinnacle of pain - or revealed a new low. Whichever way you look at it, her tales of a decade long sexual relationship with her father, John Phillips (the late leader of the Mamas & the Papas), is one of the most harrowing stories we've heard from a child of celebrity. Full disclosure: I am a show business kid. While not a musician, my father was a music agent for years before becoming pop culture icon Famous Amos. My mom was a former nightclub singer who battled mental illness my whole life until her suicide. Just another Hollywood family.I grew up around a lot of the drugs, dysfunction, and highly questionable parental behavior I am sure Phillips discusses in her book (I have not read it). I...

Actress MacKenzie Phillips has urged fans of The Mamas & The Papas to separate their judgements of her father John Phillips' professional work from his "personal demons", after revealing he raped her when she was a teenager.
The troubled star tells all about her decade-long sexual relationship with her dad in new memoir High On Arrival, describing how a sexual assault on the eve of her wedding to Jeff Sessler in 1979 turned into a perverse consensual act, which ended when she became pregnant.
The former child star appeared on Oprah Winfrey's TV talk show on Wednesday to open up further about the incestuous affair, but now she's keen to make sure her shocking revelations don't taint her dad's musical legacy.
She tells America's Today Show, "My father was not a bad man, he was a very sick man. If anybody out there can separate his body of work from his personal demons, I think that would be the honourable thing to do.
"He did not set out to hurt me, he did the best with what he had. He was a damaged guy."
And she is keen to set the record straight about reports their relationship was consensual for a decade.
She says, "People say for 10 years I had this relationship, but, at 18, I was molested, then maybe three years later, I started waking up with my pants around my ankles, and then maybe two years later, it became consensual, so to call it a 10-year affair or a 10-year relationship is not correct.
"This is not something that happens like that (immediately); this is a warped event that occurred over time and what it started out as, which was an act of molestation, and what it became are two entirely different things.
"I had no accountability for the initial event. I believe I have some accountability for what went down afterwards, although I believe that incest of any kind is a betrayal; it's an abuse of power, so to characterise it as an incestuous 10-year affair is not well informed."...
