“Adult Swim” has seemingly pushed the boundaries of animation for more than 20 years, with more new series on the way in 2024:
“The comedic thriller “Common Side Effects", co-created by Joe Bennett and Steve Hely follows ‘Marshall’ and ‘Frances’, two former high school lab partners who share a secret: Marshall has discovered the world's greatest medicine, a mushroom that can heal almost anything.
“But getting it out into the world won't be easy - the ‘DEA’, big pharma and international businessmen are all on the chase to stop them.
“‘Oh My God, Yes! A Series of Extremely Relatable Circumstances’ a comedy created by Adele Williams…
“…follows best friends navigating the wild and dicey dating misadventures…
“in South Central LA, circa 2102.
“‘Ha Ha You Clowns’, follows three sweet natured brothers who, alongside their deeply caring father…
“…embark on various adventures as they bond together in the wake of their mother's passing.

The legacy of iconic culinary master and TV staple Anthony Bourdain (“Parts Unknown”) lives on with an Adult Swim adaptation of Bourdain’s graphic novel series “Get Jiro.”
The Warner Bros. Discovery’s brand has ordered an animated-series version of the comics from DC/Vertigo. The “Get Jiro” graphic novels, cowritten by Bourdain and Joel Rose and featuring artwork by Langdon Foss and Alé Garza, are New York Times bestsellers. Bourdain and Rose’s first graphic novel in the franchise was published in 2012.
This “Get Jiro” will be a half-hour animated series set in a not-too-distant future L.A. where master chefs rule the city and people will murder each other to get a reservation at the best restaurant. The show centers on a mysterious, revenge-focused sushi chef named Jiro.
The screenwriters for A24 feature “Sharper,” Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka, serve as co-creators and showrunners for the upcoming series.

Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen knows the industry is “being much more bullish” about adult animation than when his popular programming block premiered in 2001 on Cartoon Network. It’s a noteworthy shift for Western audiences, who’ve spent decades watching mostly family sitcoms dominate the medium.
“Without people making animation synonymous with kids only, I don’t even know if we’d ever use the term ‘adult animation.’ It’s a term that’s in negation of a perception. Animation is not one thing. It’s a production method that allows for a lot of things that other production methods don’t allow for,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s something secret about animation that allows it to last longer, travel more and mean more to people — for them to wear it as their identity a little easier — than other production methods.”

Sony has some big plans for their upcoming slate of animated projects both for film and TV. In a report from Variety, the studio has confirmed that they will be reviving The Boondocks animated series, with original creator Aaron McGruder. They also revealed they are developing a show based on the late Anthony Bourdain’s graphic novel series, Hungry Ghost, and shared details on Phill Lord and Chris Miller’s new animated film project The Mitchells vs. The Machines.
I loved The Boondocks, so it’s pretty exciting to hear that the series is going to be making a comeback! It’s said to be a reimagined version of the The Boondocks, and it will focus on the Freemans’ battle against Uncle Ruckus, who is now an “evil local government tyrant who rules fictional Woodcrest County, Maryland with an iron fist.”

Sony Animation unveiled an ambitious collection of new projects at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on Wednesday, including a revival of one the 21st century’s most acclaimed animated series.
While the presentation featured some of the studio’s established titles, the slate involves new projects from a number of notable creators and source material, spanning film and TV aims. One major effort is a “re-imagining” of Aaron McGruder’s “The Boondocks,” the comic strip that eventually became an Adult Swim animated TV show.
“The Boondocks” last aired in 2014, with a ten-episode Season 4 written by Angela Nissel and Rodney Barnes. The show has aired sporadically on the network, but the current five-year hiatus is the longest the show has been off the air since it debuted in late 2005.
Another animated creator with ties to Adult Swim was part of Wednesday’s announcement. Genndy Tartakovsky, the director behind “Samurai Jack,...

The restaurant world can be cutthroat — and in the dystopian culinary world of Get Jiro!, if you insult a chef, your throat might literally get cut. In 2012, writers Anthony Bourdain (yes, that Anthony Bourdain) and Joel Rose, along with artist Langdon Foss, released a tongue-in-cheek graphic novel following the adventures of a stoic warrior-sushi-chef named Jiro. Entitled Get Jiro! and published by Vertigo, the comic was a lysergic mixture of Top Chef and The Warriors, filled with kitchen wisdom and ultraviolent warfare between rival Los Angeles cooking gangs. Improbably, it was a huge hit. And now Jiro and his deliciously over-the-top world are coming back. We're pleased to exclusively announce that Vertigo has tapped Bourdain and Rose to write a prequel, Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi. Illustrated by longtime superhero comics artist Alé Garza, the graphic novel will take place in Tokyo, years before the L.A.-set events of...

Whether you own a TV or simply rely on the web, it should be clear by the barrage of advertising that holiday shopping season has once again fallen upon us. Maybe you’re one of those who stumbled out of your post Thanksgiving tryptophan-coma at 4am yesterday for some Walking Dead style survival drills at your local Walmart or Best Buy. Black Friday, the day consumers sacrifice dignity for dollars. To you I say, “Resist!” Shopping must be done, but why allow Target to invoke their name unto you this shopping season? One thing I can say for Vertigo Comics is they never fail to surprise me with their diverse books. One month they'll do a sci-fi graphic novel about the dangers of technology and a few months later I receive another one so far in the outfield it leaves me wondering how writers come up with the material. That's how I felt while reading their latest offering, Get Jiro!
The book revolves around a sushi chef named Jiro. In the not too distant future, two crime lords rule L.A. with an iron fist. Instead of controlling the streets using drugs and weapons, these gangs rule with culinary skills. The world is so obsessed with food that people literally kill for a seat at the best restaurants in town. Jiro has certain skills both groups want to make their own. As they battle over the chef, he must find a way...

Like it or not, filmmaking is undeniably a director's medium. It wasn't always like that, of course: it was only the coming of the auteur theory in the 1950s and 1960s that popularized the idea of the director as the person responsible for all that was great and terrible about a picture. And while anyone who's worked in film knows that it's a collaborative medium, there's still no better way of seeing where the form might be going in the next few years than by looking at the directors who've been making splashes of late.
So, hot on the heels of our On The Rise pieces focusing on actors, actresses and screenwriters, we've picked out ten directors who've arrived in a big way in the last year or so, and look set for even greater things in the near future. Any tips of your own? Let us know in the comments section below.

Anthony Bourdain will soon release a food-inspired graphic novel.
Written alongside Joel Rose, Bourdain says the 160-page novel is "a gourmet slaughter-fest, sort of like ‘Fistful of Dollars’ meets ‘Eat Drink Man Woman’ and ‘Yojimbo’ meets ‘Big Night’ and ‘Babette’s Feast’, an ultra-violent slaughter-fest over culinary arcana."
Titled Get Jiro!, the upcoming novel is expected to be released in June 2012.

Star of the Travel Channel show "No Reservations," Anthony Bourdain broke out some hard-hitting writing when he released his memoir "Kitchen Confidential" — but he's decided to try his hand at creating a graphic novel as well. Bourdain let his project slip in an interview earlier this year, but it's official now, and it won't be about gyros.
He'll be aided by novelist Joel Rose of "Kill Kill Faster Faster" and artist Langdon Foss, whose work has appeared in "Heavy Metal." Together, they're synthesizing a "futuristic action thriller" called "Get Jiro!" which was just announced at New York Comic Con.
The genre choice may surprise Bourdain's followers, but it's said to be focusing on American obsessions with exotic cuisine in manic, violent and extreme ways. Such subject matter is well within the realm of topics Bourdain has addressed before in his career, though. The title character is a sushi chef who...
