Sam Smith went to Canada in the 20s to install the first "talkies" in
the cinemas there. He returned to the UK to buy films to exhibit in
Canada, purchasing and exhibiting the Official war films "Zeebrugge,
Mons and Ypres". He made his debut as a Producer in 1923 with A Royal
Divorce. He was associated with G.B. Samuelson for some years before
forming British Lion Film. Edgar Wallace was chairman in 1927. He was
soon joined by younger brother Herbert. Based at Beaconsfield Studios,
Sam continued with British Lion till 1945 when he died.
